Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) today said that several current and former White House officials, including Karl Rove and Josh Bolten, “must comply with committee subpoenas to testify” about the U.S. attorney scandal. He declared that President Bush had no role in the firings, therefore their excuses of “executive privilege” were “not legally valid.” This ruling “clears the way for Leahy’s panel to vote on whether to advance the citations to the full Senate.”

Believe it when I see it.
November 29th, 2007 at 1:55 pmReally Senator Leahy, what’s the rush? Take your time. Things are going swell.
November 29th, 2007 at 1:56 pmOh Geez. Another sternly worded letter. Why can’t we just arrest them now? Why wait to be ignored once again? Does anybody have a spare backbone you could lend to the dems? They are in need of one right now.
November 29th, 2007 at 1:57 pmPlease don’t hurry Leahy on our account(or the country’s….or the world’s)
November 29th, 2007 at 1:57 pmTP - do you mean Josh Bolton, not John Bolton?
November 29th, 2007 at 2:02 pmThe head bone’s connected to the spine bone…or at least it’s supposed to be.
November 29th, 2007 at 2:02 pmReally Pat, if you guys moved any slower you’d be going backwards. Oh wait …
November 29th, 2007 at 2:04 pmHonestly, I’m getting a little embarrassed for Leahy…
November 29th, 2007 at 2:04 pmGood ole Pat. His letter-writing hand is well rested after a couple of months, so he feels up to a renewed effort.
November 29th, 2007 at 2:06 pmgive pat a break - why, i bet hes still wondering why people don’t use horses and carriages as their main mode of transport these days.
November 29th, 2007 at 2:08 pm’bout F-in’ time!!
November 29th, 2007 at 2:10 pmOh good God almighty ISSUE THE CONTEMPT CITATION ALREADY! Just like John Conyers has issued NINE warnings and no reply. This is beyond f*kng pathetic! Get the Capitol Hill Police to put Rove in handcuffs and DRAG his flabby ass down to the Senate floor and put him on trial. I will not believe anything until I see it.
November 29th, 2007 at 2:15 pmBut of course Bush was in on it, nothing happens in the Fascist Mafia of The Don Bush without his approval and seems how he claims to have not been involved then the “Executive Privilege Bullsh!t” can’t be used.
They need to use inherent contempt to hold their feet to the fire with jail time. They all need to go to jail at sometime here for their crimes, so it might as well be now.

November 29th, 2007 at 2:22 pmbilbobaggins, there’s Josh Bolten, WH Chief of Staff, and then there’s John Bolton, ex-dipolomat-who-doesn’t-do-diplomacy.
Apparently, Josh Bolten’s father worked for the CIA. According to wikipedia, Josh used to work for GHW Bush’s administration AND supposedly plays bass guitar in a band called the “Compassionates”…
November 29th, 2007 at 2:22 pmI do like the part in this post where Leahy seems to be saying, “Fine - you want to claim that Bush had no role well then you can’t claim executive privilege!”
from the link:
November 29th, 2007 at 2:28 pm‘The executive privilege claim “is surprising in light of the significant and uncontroverted evidence that the president had no involvement in these firings,” Leahy, D-Vt., wrote in his ruling. “The president’s lack of involvement in these firings — by his own account and that of many others — calls into question any claim of executive privilege.’
yes!
November 29th, 2007 at 2:28 pmPlease, the Dems care about the constitution as much as the thugs do. If there was one iota of concern for our country, Harriet the supreme court nominee, Rove the consummate lying POS, and a myriad of others would be in a cell.
I hope the world courts have more backbone when it comes to trying Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice and Powell.
November 29th, 2007 at 2:30 pmAnother little itty bitty step in the right direction, but to the naked eye it’s hard to see measurable progress.
I would love to see me (and other skeptics) proved wrong.
November 29th, 2007 at 2:45 pmYawn…..
November 29th, 2007 at 2:55 pmHey, Leahy!
Have you ever heard the phrase “$hit or get off the pot?”
Lets go here buddy. Do something worthwhile or get the hell out of the way.
November 29th, 2007 at 3:14 pmThe ball’s in Mukasey’s court soon.
November 29th, 2007 at 3:38 pmThis reminds me of an old Honeymooners scene. It’s a little fuzzy but I think what happens is Norton is trying to learn to golf. He goes on and on waggling the club in front of the ball, looking down the fairway, squating and using the club as a plumb bob, then back to waggling the club, and on and on and on until Ralph yells at him. It’s pretty funny for old TV, for modern legislation, not so much…
November 29th, 2007 at 3:42 pmLet me guess, another sternly written letter to the WH.
November 29th, 2007 at 3:50 pmThe ball’s in Mukasey’s court soon.

I hope so because that might prove enlightening.
November 29th, 2007 at 3:50 pmLeahy is looking to receive another anthrax letter from the Bush criminal administration?
November 29th, 2007 at 4:46 pmLeahy and Conyers can do the best they can, for once, or they can resign and have more accountable Representatives elected in their place.
November 29th, 2007 at 4:53 pmI have next to nothing in confidence that ALL in the Federal government aren’t just actors in a big game that includes the main stream media and other corporations.
Because of this, I’m solidly in the ‘I’ll believe it when I see it’ camp.
November 29th, 2007 at 5:28 pmSen. Leahy, moving at this pace will allow the Rethugs to stonewall this action until everyone is retired and probably dead.
November 29th, 2007 at 6:25 pmwell. . .
we’ll see — but to see what
i suspect will be the next few
steps in this maddeningly-
drawn out dance, go see
more all at mine. . .
but i do think a floor vote
on contempt of the senate
could come at the end of
the week of december 14
(assuming a one week hold
at the committee level, by re-
publican oper-
thug-atives), oncethe senate reconvenes. until
then, take a look at leahy’s
ruling — it denies bush an exec-
utive privilege claim as to
matters in which bush has
said he was “uninvolved“. . .
i’ve added a few funny short
videos, from my archive on these
topice there, as well. . .

November 29th, 2007 at 7:36 pmIt was also reported recently that Sen Leahy has agreed to expedite controversial Bush court nominees for vote. These would be the same nominees Sen Reid arranged to block from recess appt during the Thanksgiving recess…….hmmmm, any connection??
November 30th, 2007 at 12:41 amOur Congresspersons are under threat - remember the recent strange Pete Stark telling the truth about bush’s lies that are getting our soldiers killed and then a few days latter weeping while he apologized. Congresspersons and their families are being threatened and we need to acknowledge this and try to get them Secret Service protection.
The FBI under mueller will not tell the Congress the status of the anthrax investigation. We need to show on these boards that we are smart enough to know what is going on.
Please send Sen. Leahy an email of support for his incredible courage in the face of very real threats.
