Hostages held at Clinton’s NH campaign office.

AP reports:

An armed man took people hostage Friday at a Hillary Clinton presidential campaign office in New Hampshire, police said.

The incident happened at about 1 p.m. Friday at 28 North Main St. in Rochester. Officials said that a man is holding people hostage at the office, but it is unclear how many people are being held.

UPDATE: MSNBC is reporting that the two hostages being held are Clinton campaign volunteers. The hostage-taker, who reportedly is demanding to speak with the senator, has already released a woman and a child.

UPDATE II: Bill Shaheen, a top state campaign official, said that the “man had what appeared to be a bomb strapped to himself.” The AP reports that workers “for Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign office in Rochester also were evacuated, a campaign spokesman said. The office is four doors away from Clinton’s. Staffers in John Edwards’ office, a few buildings away, evacuated as well.”

UPDATE III: Clinton, who is in DC, canceled her speech to the DNC after news of the NH situation broke.

UPDATE IV: The Clinton campaign has put out this statement:

There is an ongoing situation in our Rochester, NH office. We are in close contact with state and local authorities and are acting at their direction. We will release additional details as appropriate.

UPDATE V: WMUR in New Hampshire reports that another “one of the hostages, a woman, was released at about 3 p.m.

This is a bit inaccurate. U-238 is only weakly radioactive, and the radiation it produces is no more radioactive than the 90 micrograms of natural uranium already in your body. There are no reported reproductive effects, according to the WHO, and most DU is eliminated via the kidneys.

It is chemically toxic, particularly in the kidneys and lungs, which is the real problem.

The kidneys are the main site of damage from DU exposure because they are the main site of elimination of the metal from the bloodstream. There are the two relevant points from the WHO fact sheet:

Of the uranium that is absorbed into the blood, approximately 70% will be filtered by the kidney and excreted in the urine within 24 hours; this amount increases to 90% within a few days.

In the kidneys, the proximal tubules (the main filtering component of the kidney) are considered to be the main site of potential damage from chemical toxicity of uranium. There is limited information from human studies indicating that the severity of effects on kidney function and the time taken for renal function to return to normal both increase with the level of uranium exposure.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that DU isn’t a bad thing. I’m just clarifying that radioactivity is not the main issue.

Then why don’t you sprinkle some in your oatmeal every morning.

The Christian Science Monitor recently sent reporters to Iraq to investigate long-term effects of depleted uranium. Staff writer Scott Peterson saw children playing on top of a burnt-out tank near a vegetable stand on the outskirts of Baghdad, a tank that had been destroyed by armor-piercing shells coated with depleted uranium. Wearing his mask and protective clothing, he pointed his Geiger counter toward the tank. It registered 1,000 times the normal background radiation. The families who survived the tragic decade of sanctions, even the children who recently survived the bombing of Baghdad, may not survive the radiated aftermath of military profligacy. Uranium remains radioactive for two billion years. That’s a long time for reconstruction.

According to Dr. Doug Rokke, U.S. Army health physicist who led the first clean-up of depleted uranium after the Gulf War, “Depleted uranium is a crime against God and humanity.” Rokke’s own crew, a hundred employees, was devastated by exposure to the fine dust. “When we went to the Gulf, we were all really healthy,” he said. After performing clean-up operations in the desert (mistakenly without protective gear), 30 members of his staff died, and most others—including Rokke himself—developed serious health problems. Rokke now has reactive airway disease, neurological damage, cataracts, and kidney problems. “We warned the Department of Defense in 1991 after the Gulf War. Their arrogance is beyond comprehension.”

Thank you – this helps reinforce my point that it’s a problem of toxicity, not radioactivity. The primary health effect of radiation exposure is cancer. Exposure to U-238 is not generally associated with increased cancer risk, except in the case of uranium miners, though this is attributed more to radon exposure in the mine than the uranium itself.

Science disagrees with your article: http://www.who.int/ionizing_radiation/pub_meet/en/Depluranium4.pdf

That’s a good question. I don’t have an answer. The DU becomes so dangerous because once the munition explodes it’s released as dust. That dust is then breathed in, or falls into the soil and then the water supply. So perhaps its dangerous as a dust and less dangerous in other forms. But don’t worry, it only remains toxic for a few billion years.

  57. Jeremy in Denver says:

Uranium decays by emission of alpha particles, essentially two protons and two neutrons, a Helium atom nucleus. These heavy particles are too heavy to penetrate far into tissue, which means that usually, the skin stops them. This is why U-238 is not seen as a particularly radioactive material. Also, since U-238 has a half-life of billions of years. That means that very few alpha particles are released per unit of time compared to more dangerous radioactive products such as Radon.

Now, to explain Dr. Rokke’s issue, all we have to do is look at what Uranium does as a simple poison. It attacks and destroys the cells in the kidneys. This can cause all kinds of toxic byproducts of our metabolism to back up in the bloodstream. The effects of the Alpha particles are meaningless next to the damage that those can do, not to mention the ‘vanilla’ toxic damage that this heavy metal does to our system.

Eating Uranium is not healthy for you…and not for the reason you think. ;)

Incidently, respiratory damage also is a known symptom of breathing U-238 dust, and again, not due to its radioactive principles. U-238 can take apart a cell quite fine without giving up a single alpha particle.

As for the actual radiological effects of U-238? Well, should he survive the short-term toxicity, he _may_ run the risk of cancer, however, that cancer risk is not demonstratably higher than if he’d never encountered U-238.

  58. 2MillionLightYearsToAndromeda says:

After the Gulf War in 1991, Iraqi hospitals recorded a surge in cancer and birth defects. Hospital statistics from Basra show that in 1988 there were 11 cancer cases per 100,000 people. By 2001, after schools, homes, and entire neighborhoods were leveled from the air, the number increased to 116 per 100,000. Breast and lung cancer and leukemia showed up in all areas contaminated by depleted uranium. Dr. Jawad al-Ali, cancer specialist at the Basra Training Hospital, noted that, “The only factor that has changed here since the 1991 war is radiation.” Thirteen members of his staff, all present when the hospital area was bombed, are now cancer patients.

Correlation is not causation. When you level an entire city, you release a lot of nasty carcinogens into the air, water, and soil that could also account for the rise in cancer rates. Unless doctors in Basra did radiation monitoring of their patients in the wake of the first Gulf War, you cannot conclude that radiation alone caused that increase in cancer, although it may indeed have been one factor.

The scientific and medical documentation I have read on the topic points to toxicity and not radioactivity as the primary source of aftereffects of DU munitions. I’m not a shill for anyone and I’m certainly not a supporter of DU munitions. But if we’re going to protest their use, we should do so based on scientific fact, not fourthhand assertions.

I welcome you to present some scientific evidence that shows that radioactivity is the primary public health concern associated with DU. The research I was looking at is from 2001. If you can point to something more recent that contradicts the WHO’s findings, please point it out.
