“Several news organizations are reporting that two volunteers who were held hostage are now free.” Though it is “unclear if there were any more inside,” police on the scene told Fox News that “you could deduce that all the hostages are gone.” People are now reportedly negotiating the hostage taker’s surrender.
UPDATE: “Local police are believed to be negotiating with a man described as a well-known local resident with a history of emotional problems who told his son to ‘watch the news today.’”

I just got back from the center of Mexico City, the Zócalo, a very popular place. I took the subway in order to get there faster. And there was this little girl, 14 y/o crawling inside the wagon, maybe looking for some dropped coins. Her clothes were dirty and I couldn’t see her face. The door opened at the next station and she got out still crawling. She wasn’t asking for money like most of beggars tend to do. She was just crawling…

Coupla key quotes:
“The Kurdish regional government’s oil deals with foreign companies drew sharp criticism Thursday in the Iraqi parliament, with some lawmakers saying the contracts set a dangerous precedent and threatened efforts to push through U.S.-backed legislation aimed at promoting national unity.”
Kurdistan’s leaders have signed an exploration deal with Hunt Oil of Texas and others with European companies.

“According to what is going on, it seems that those people do not belong to Iraq,” he said of the Kurds.

November 30th, 2007 at 4:38 pm#32, dbigass,
You know that AQ’s #1 priority was trying to stop the emerging democracy in Iraq, to the neglect of all their other efforts. Now that their efforts have been suppressed in Iraq, they are now causing more problems in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they will lose their support, as they did in Iraq, by causing too much violence and suffering, with no change in government.
What I can’t understand, with things now going well in Iraq, why isn’t Hill’reh doing better in the polls?

Sadly, I am not seeing any candidates with an eye for the future, in the mold of Teddy Roosevelt, etc., who lead large public works efforts in the past (Hoover Dam, Panama Canal, cross-continental railroad, interstate highway system, etc.).
Fortunately, venture capital(ism) is leading the way in the development of clean, renewable energy sources, and again, fortunately, it will be those venture capitalists who will profit from it.

As I said to Ralph, that may be true. But dbadass’s question was “when did AQ declare Iraq the central front.” As we see, it was in 2004, at the latest.
You can certainly make the argument that Iraq would NOT have been a central front in the war with Al Qaeda had we not deposed Saddam. But the fact is that Al Qaeda is there now and today believes that success in Iraq is crucial to its survival and mission. We need to fight AQ where ever it turns up — Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines, Ethiopia, etc.

AQ was running around the world, terrorizing various countries, when the US decided to clean house in Afghanistan and Iraq. Realizing that the greatest threat to their way of life is freedom and democracy, AQ decided to undermine democratic efforts in these two countries – and THEY LOST. AQ’s main front now is Pakistan, with Afghanistan a close second.

Comment by Jason M. Hendler — November 30, 2007 @ 4:57 pm
Go ahead and believe it — Murtha did actually say that. And Republicans have grabbed that ball and are running with it. But if you’re going to quote Murtha, you might as well get the full context of what he said, so don’t ignore this part:
“The military surge has created a window of opportunity for the Iraqi government,†the Pennsylvania Democrat said. “Unfortunately, the sacrifice of our troops has not been met by the Iraqi government and they have failed to capitalize on the political and diplomatic steps that the surge was designed to provide.”
In other words, we’ve done our part. We’ve created that “window” for the Iraqis. However, we’re still not getting the results we were supposed to. This isn’t really all that different from what other Democrats are saying. And no — I have no desire to see the surge fail, since our people have already died to make it a success. It’s just that the political situation in Iraq is so bad that I remain skeptical.
As far as Hillary goes, she will just continue to play her little game of dodge-ball. That will work with some voters and disenchant others.
November 30th, 2007 at 5:06 pmThat is why I was wondering why Hillary had a big campaign headquarters there????? I would have chosen Gonic myself.

Circles. round and round. There was no opertational AQ in Iraq prior to our invasion. None. Exley’s and JH are connecting dots that didn’t exist and then claim we have to be there now because they are there. AQ is in Pakistan in the largest numbers but we have no full force hunting them down there. Afghanistan is turning into Bushfukdupistan with the Taliban and AQ reforming but we have no plans to place a “surge” there.
Quit trumpeting military without understanding it.
November 30th, 2007 at 5:09 pmWinston Churchill, as responsible cabinet minister in the early years, saw Iraq as an experiment in high-technology colonial control. Though officials in London sometimes had qualms about the violence, colonial administrators on the ground like Gertrude Bell expressed enthusiasm for the power of the imperial military enterprise.

November 30th, 2007 at 5:37 pmYou gotta kind of admire the tactics of a troll like AoR. He goes for the twisted, tangled mass of lies, distortions and plain fcuked-up thinking in an effort to throw up a road block to progressive discussion. There are so many tantilizing loose ends of stupidity poking out of a statement like this:
AQ is everywhere over there except in the country of a guy who would have loved nothing better than to see its members take a few shots at the U.S? Seven intelligence agencies working for Saddam and not even once did they have operational contact with AQ, sure sure.
that it’s tempting to just grab one and start unraveling. But much like Bush’s anti-terrorism foreign policy, that’s a bad idea. There’s no straight through-line from one stupid statement to the next and you could get bogged down in a quagmire of troll feces before you know it.

OK, I don’t have time to get into a long discussion about this for a variety of reasons. Let me just interject that Saddam was on speaking terms with the main heads of Al-Qaeda, mainly because they were a tremendous threat. Basically, Saddam viewed OBL the way that Rudy G. views Hillary. AQ is a Sunni organization, same as the former govt of Iraq, under Hussein. He knew that if they ever had a foothold in Iraq, he would be done for. Now Iraq, being majority Shia, will hopefully expel the Sunni elements out, but it is doubtful. Most of them receive a tremendous amount of funding from the Saudis, who have a limitless amount of money.

I haven’t voted in years, but I did vote for Perot twice.
Right now, there are only four candidates with executive experience: Bill Richardson, Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney and Rudy Guilianni. Of those, only Mayor of New York comes close to the level of responsibility required to lead the US. These days, if you aren’t the governor of a large state (CA, NY, TX, FL, etc.) or mayor of a large city with a major port (LA, SF, NY, Miami, etc.), then you really aren’t qualified to be president.

I suspect you aren’t alone in your thinking, because out of the past 5 presidents we’ve had, four were governors with no political experience on the federal level — the exception being H.W. Bush. Voters like electing governors. Maybe for the “executive” experience, or maybe because they are perceived as Washington outsiders.
Our current president was governor of a large state (Texas), supposedly making him more qualified to be president (by your standards) than any other president in the past 75 years with the exceptions of Reagan and FDR (also governors of large states).
Forgive me if I’m a bit unimpressed with the results of hiring such a “qualified” candidate for the job.
I agree that executive experience can be helpful in the POTUS job. But I also believe that foreign policy experience is just as helpful — something that the Washington crowd has over the state and city level execs, so I wouldn’t rule out U.S. legislative experience.

Sales of actual M4s by Colt are restricted to military and civilian law enforcement. Only under special circumstances can a private citizen own an official M4 Carbine. While many machine guns can be legally owned with a proper tax stamp from the BATFE, an amendment to the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 barred the transfer to private citizens of machine guns made in the U.S. after May 19, 1986. The only exception was for Special Occupational Taxpayers (SOT): licensed machine gun dealers with demonstration letters, manufacturers, and those dealing in exports and imports. As such, only the earliest Colt M4 prototypes built prior to May 19, 1986 would be legal to own by civilians not in the categories mentioned.
November 30th, 2007 at 7:21 pmI support my wife financially and she does nothing for a living. That will soon change.

November 30th, 2007 at 7:25 pmI WANT A DIVORCE!
Comment by Shaynes husband
You’re already divorced from reality. I would think the alimony you’re currently paying for THAT little mistake would make you think twice.
November 30th, 2007 at 7:31 pmAnd… he’s gone. Well, we warned the little twit.
November 30th, 2007 at 7:34 pm“Perhaps I’ll need to force a judge to bring me back to reality!”
Advocating violence against the judiciary? Why does that not surprise me?
November 30th, 2007 at 7:41 pmLooks like a typical Friday evening. The TP moderators hit the cocktails, and the trolls have nowhere to go, so they crawl out from under the fridge to play.
Have a great evening, in spite of it all. I’m off for a beer or 12.
November 30th, 2007 at 7:41 pmDammit, gum. Now I have to have a beer when I get home.

That bridge was crossed, and burned down, long before “Al created the internets”. Unfortunately, it seems to be contagious. Kind of like VD.
November 30th, 2007 at 11:42 pmGood job of exterminating the cockroach.
December 1st, 2007 at 12:41 amDidn’t know what a trigger group was.
For Kreists Sake, that kind of gun groupie is downright dangerous.
I don’t mind him blowing a few fingers off his own hand, but they usually wind up taking a couple of innocents with them.
These nut-cases always go after good people like John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and now an attempt on Hillary Clinton. Why didn’t he go after someone evil like George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, or Donald Rumsfeld?
December 1st, 2007 at 1:29 amYou seem to have this piece out of context. There was of course the why piece as well as the who and how.
December 1st, 2007 at 2:20 amFrom the NY Times, a cautionary tale to go with the “successfull surge”
The Iraqi government lacks a mechanism to settle property disputes if former residents return to Baghdad only to find their homes occupied, the officials said. Nor has the Iraqi government come forward with a detailed plan to provide aid, shelter and other essential services to the thousands of Iraqis who might return. American commanders caution that if the return is not carefully managed, there is a risk of undermining the recent security gains.
December 1st, 2007 at 7:22 amAl Qaeda’s there and so are US troops. Hence you kick the fk out of them there. That’s as complicated as the equation gets.
Comment by Kilo — December 1, 2007 @ 4:39 am
that sounds like the exact same approach Al Qaeda used, only they’re kicking the fk out of us. Good work, kilo, you crazies have gotten it wrong from the start, and have spent over 5 years losing to a ragtag bunch of nobodies who took all of their strength fromyour hatred and ignorance of how things work. 2007=highest US troop deaths. Way to go! You and your troop-hating minions of the 24% must be very happy, especially since you can now take a congressman’s words (a guy you called a liar and a traitor, even) out of context in order to get more Americans killed. You couldn’t be more stupid, but you have given it a good try.
December 1st, 2007 at 8:12 amSo this was literally cribbed from Tommy Boy? Road flares=dynamite, TV news comes running, you get your message aired. Holy schnikes..
December 1st, 2007 at 10:16 amIf Hill’reh can’t protect her own campaign headquarters from the average looney bird, then how is she going to protect our country from terrorists?
December 1st, 2007 at 10:49 amI wonder how this would have played out in Repuppetcan circles if this Man’s last name were Abdullah?
