Global AIDS Epidemic Hits Home In Washington D.C.

worldaids.jpgThere are 33.2 million people in the world currently infected with HIV, and 2007 saw 2.5 million new infections. But as Matt Foreman, Executive Director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, notes: “Here in the United States, the attitude of so many within our own community is that there’s not a lot more to be done.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) states, “Recently reported increases in both new HIV infections and new AIDS cases in the United States call out for stronger leadership domestically as well.” Right outside the U.S. Capitol, a “modern epidemic” is raging.

City health officials report that Washington, D.C. has the highest rate of AIDS infection in the country, with HIV continuing to be transmitted at an epidemic pace. Some startling statistics:

– “One in 20 city residents is thought to have HIV and 1 in 50 residents to have AIDS.”

– “At the end of 2006, there were 8,368 reported cases of people living with AIDS in the District, a 43% increase from 2001.”

– “The number of women living with AIDS has increased by more than 76% over the past six years.”

– Black residents, which represent 57 percent of the city’s population of 500,000 or so, “account for 81 percent of new reports of H.I.V. cases and about 86 percent of people with AIDS.”

To mark tomorrow’s World AIDS Day, President Bush delivered a speech highlighting the important role of faith- and community-based organizations in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. His reliance on faith-based organizations in the past, however, has meant that “a full two-thirds of the money for the prevention of the sexual spread of HIV” goes to abstinence-only programs, which have failed to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

GlobalHealthFacts provides a map of the people living with HIV or AIDS across the globe:

Faith-based organizations? they better have a better take on the situation than Jerry Falwell had…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Falwell#Homosexuality

Falwell has been called an agent of intolerance[24] and the founder of the anti-gay industry[25] who regularly demonized and dehumanized gays as well as people with AIDS (PWAs) and fought against gay rights. In the early 1980s, when the AIDS pandemic was first beginning to gain public attention and was widely characterized as a “gay disease”, Falwell stated “AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals, it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.”[26]

  24. bostonMA says:

This abstinence education emphasis is not just the policy in Washington DC, but in large parts of the nation. People are still dying because of it. Outside of our borders, we are sending tax money from our paychecks for foreign aid under the requirement that “abstinence and fidelity” education be the only AIDS prevention message heard in many areas. This designed policy of misinformation has resulted in hundreds of thousands of global AIDS deaths.

The only one more culpable than the United States is the Catholic Church, whose teachings have led to millions of orphaned and diseased children across the globe. In 2005, Cardinal Napier in South Africa said that there is “no evidence” that condom education works to prevent HIV transmission, and that “you’ve got to challenge where the problem lies, and that is in practicing irresponsible behavior”

Yet, I live in a highly educated and moral country where many walk around with the notion that Christianity and human morality are necessarily intertwined, and that policies set by government or organizations under the guise of “faith” require silent deference to be socially acceptable within our community.

The map that was presented is a TERRIBLE map, in that it doesn’t provide HIV rates as a percentage of the population, as most other maps do. If it did, it would show that sub-Saharan Africa is in severe crisis, as well as southeast Asian and Carribean nations, while North America and Northern Europe are least effected.

Clearly, libs are trying to downplay the HIV rates in Africa (as well as the devastation to the jungles by the slash and burn land clearing practices that occur in Africa, as it does in the Amazon – even Al Gore was brave enough to state that). If you can’t be honest about the state of a problem, then you will NEVER solve it, which upholds my beliefs that libs don’t want solutions, just divisive issues on which to run for elected office, so they can then institute their agenda of commie-fascist rule.

  70. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #78, CaptainMantastic (lol at name),

I would do all of the above – abstinence, condoms, etc., but I don’t think any of it will help sub-Saharan African cultures that are in free fall collapse. Both South Africa and Rhodesia were strong and growing economies, until the Europeans were driven out of power and off their developed lands, then both nations saw a dramatic increase in the population living in poverty.

Until their populations drop to sustainable levels, sub-Saharan African nations will continue to live in deplorable conditions of poverty, disease and war, and any attempt to interfere with that trend will only lead to a prolonging of the misery.

    #80, Captain Mantastic,

I honestly don’t believe education is enough at this point – there is something seriously wrong with these various cultures in sub-Saharan Africa, in which there is so little regard for human life, even their own.

I predicted long ago that muslim, Indian and Chinese cultures will eventually displace the existing sub-Saharan cultures, because it is now their manifest destinies. These cultures have far greater population densities, without the same levels of disease, poverty and war, and being more viable, will succeed over their less viable neighbors.

success is not possible, since the war was lost before it began. Mass-murder can never be called successful, except by sociopaths. if Iraq is ever left to its own devices, without the constant warring between an agressive, illegal invader and the country’s patriots (bolstered by oppotunistic terrorists, not there before the invasion), it may achieve a success by its own measure, but will never be a success by the measure of immoral, greedy, sociopathic American businessmen. Only when it has been bled dry of all oil and riches will american businessmen consider it a success. Democracy? That’s the last thing the oil barons want.

  77. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #86, Captain Mantastic,

Sub-Saharan Africa is a disaster, and like Hurricane Katrina, all you could hope to do is extract refugees, then pave over the disaster area.

The writing is on the wall – muslims, Indians and Chinese will eventually populate the area, displacing the native population.

  78. Jason M. Hendler says:

    Captain Mantastic,

After taking some time to further consider your comment on no differences among cultures that would effect the potential for capitalistic reform and growth, I still disagree, and here are two examples of why:

    1) Rhodesians did not respect the property rights of the Europeans, who made Rhodesia the breadbasket of Africa. The Rhodesians seized the property from the Europeans, then failed to sustain the productivity of those assets, leading to a collapse of their economy.

    2) South African native peoples blamed the Apartheid government for the poverty among themselves, and after overthrowing the Apartheid goverrnment, they now have twice the number of their own living in poverty.

The first fundamental tenant of capitalism is property rights, which means:

    1) No person can be someone else’s property – sub-Saharan Africans have long sold each other into slavery, so it is a part of their culture that is the first and fundamental reason capitalism will never succeed. It allows them to dismissively injure, rape, enslave and kill their own in the staggering numbers witnessed in Rwanda and Darfur.

    2) No person has claim to the wealth created by someone else’s hands (since you don’t own that person, you don’t own the fruit of their labor) – Refer back to the previous examples in which the Africans seized the developed properties of Europeans, only to mismanage and destroy that developed wealth. Even Zimbabwe (formally Rhodesia) is trying to lure Europeans back to re-develop those lands by offering them leases, but the Europeans aren’t stupid – no one will develop a property that others will take back later. This offer is further evidence of African culture not respecting property rights, therefore, capitalism will not succeed in Africa.

If you simply observe the behaviour of the sub-Saharan Africans, you will see that any person who creates wealth is eventually a target of theft / murder, so capitalism is antithetical to sub-Saharan African culture.

  79. Lefty Patriot says:

    Jason Hitler and Private manhandler:

Nice of you two racist bigots to ignore the slavery and mass-murder of the Europeans in “settling” Rhodesia, making it the bredbasket of Africa for the good of Europe through the unpaid slave labor of the native population. it’s bad enough that the two of you cackle over your lies of white supremacy, but to cherry-pick the facts shows you to be mere animals, well beneath the Africans your kind gleefully subjugates and murders, for the wake of profit. now everybody can see how morally bereft the right is, as if it weren’t all too obvious with your mass-murder in the Middle East. the Europeans deserved to lose everything, including their lives, for turning that part of Africa into a killing field. the fact that they won’t go back is a testament to their cowardice, and your posts are a testament to your ignorance and lack of human qualities. you are filth.

  81. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #93, Captain Mantastic,

I agree that sub-Saharan cultures could change, but it would take an effort similar to the end of war, decades long, occupations of Japan, Germany and South Korea, just as it will take in Iraq and Afghanistan (although these modern muslim nations should be easier than Japan and S. Korea were in the 1940’s and 1950’s).

Unfortunately, the libs made such a fuss about the US being in Iraq and Afghanistan, that it seems unlikely the US will occupy the Sudan or other war-torn sub-Saharan nations. The UN doesn’t seem to be able to do anything, and NATO has no strategic interests in sub-Saharan Africa, as it did in the Balkins. Even the African Union seems unwilling / unable to help.

Because of the aforementioned, the current trends show that muslims from North Africa, and Indians and Chinese from the East will more likely displace the sub-Saharan African cultures, rather than the existing cultures develop / mature on their own.

  82. bitblt says:

The cure for AIDS: one man one woman forever.

  83. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #97, Captain Mantastic,

Yes, China, and other industrialized or industrializing nations in Asia and Asia minor are investing in African nations, and those investments are used by the local power structures to both extract natural resources, and displace those populations interferring with that extraction (Niger, Chad, Sudan, etc.).

With Africa’s long history of disrespecting property rights, starting with slavery, and including genocide, war (to seize property) and rape, I don’t see those cultures improving to the point of viability, at least not viable enough to compete with the cultures that are encroaching on them – muslim, Chinese and Indian.

Thinking back on my post about the need to occupy these nations to allow capitalism to take hold, I guess Europe tried that when they made many of these nations their colonies, set up viable industries, only to see them seized, then collapse. Perhaps even occupation won’t work.

  84. Kit says:

This site is so virulently partisan that, for any success on the part of Republicans, you go into collective overdrive to find the spin that will make it seem bad.

According to WaPo, In his State of the Union address in 2003, the president promised $15 billion to fight AIDS over the five years ending in September 2008 — then the largest financial commitment by a nation to battling a disease.”

So as soon as Bush took office, he promised the largest amount of money EVER, by any country, to fight AIDS or any other disease.

Clinton nor any Democrat never DREAMED of doing this much.

So now Bush asks to up the ante to “increase the funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to $30 billion over five years, beginning in October 2008″. He wants to DOUBLE the already record-breaking funding towards eradicating this disease.

So you guys know you have to spin this? How? You attack the abstinence component. Right out of the gate, you insinuate that that’s what drives all of this, and that they are “christofacists”. So the people fighting AIDS in Africa are fascists, eh? Hey, if it suits your purposes.

But ONLY 7% of the money can credibly be said to go to abstinence-based programs, says the same WaPo article.

You are willing to ignore one of the biggest philanthropic American commitments EVER, because a small portion of it goes to one piece of a PORTFOLIO of efforts.
