Embattled Larry Craig Escapes To Bali To Stall Global Warming Treaty»

craig387.jpgCurrently the subject of an ongoing ethics investigation, continued allegations of being gay, and stripped of his leadership positions on the Veterans’ Affairs and Appropriations Committees, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) is seeking temporary solace in the tropical resort island of Bali.

Craig is traveling to Bali this week for the U.N.-led climate change conference as the “Republican representative from the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee,” which is led by chief global warming denier Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK).

Prior to his travels, Craig attacked EPW Chairwoman Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) for creating “all-pain, no-gain” climate change legislation that would call for caps on greenhouse gas emissions. It “demonstrates nothing more than her intent to revert the United States to a developing country,” he asserted:

I’ve been to three of the last six “COP” conferences, so I’d expect the COP-13 crowd will be singing a familiar tune. Sen. Boxer will be welcomed as the liberator, and Al Gore will probably receive another award, but in the end, the only impact the conference will have will be the pollution and consumption they all create in traveling to Bali in the first place…we can avoid suffering for symbolism, and continue to keep things cool in our own backyard, even if there’s nothing but hot air in Bali.

Notably, Boxer is also the Chairwoman of the Senate Ethics Committee, which is investigating “allegations of sexual misconduct” by Craig and is currently “continu[ing] to conduct its preliminary inquiry into the matter.”

Craig has long history of climate change denial. Some highlights:

— Denied that global warming was at all responsible for the California wildfires. [LINK]

– In 1998, said Kyoto Protocol was “unnecessary response to an exaggerated threat the vice president himself [Al Gore] is caught up in making.” [LINK]

– Claims “scientists are not certain how much man contributes to climate variability compared to nature.” [LINK]

Isolated from his own party and now “a wisp of his former self in the Senate,” Craig will have to rely on the support of fringe, discredited global warming deniers.

heh heh you said “stall”. A word he knows sooo well.

  2. PeterB Says:

Unless I’m misinterpreting something, Inhofe should be referred to only as “ranking member” of the committee — with Dem’s in control of the Senate, he doesn’t “lead” anything anymore (Thank goodness!)

  3. Menehune Says:

I wonder if he’ll have some time for some of that hot man-on-boy action you can get in that part of the world…

  4. boreas Says:

Jesus H. Christ! What does it say about the Republicans that they’re willing to let this pervert officially represent them at an important international conference? they really do live on their own little world, don’t they?

  5. Juan C. Says:

Something is gonna be globally warming over there.

  6. raynman Says:

It demonstrates the commitment that the Republican Party has to safeguarding the world when they see something as important as this conference as a place to ‘hide’ an embarrasment rather than as an opportunity to actually engage themselves in something constructive.

  7. dim wit Says:

craig: It “demonstrates nothing more than her intent to revert the United States to a developing country,”

    Classic right wing misinformation.

  8. Frosty Cupcake Says:

Yeah, you keep hanging in there, Craig. You’re a great recruiter and fundraiser for the Democratic party.

If only Foley had insisted upon hanging around.

  9. dim wit Says:

craig: “I’ve been to three of the last six “COP” conferences”

I guess that helps explain why nothing is ever accomplished. Craig, you;re a lame duck anyway. Why don’t you just sit this one out and let the adults discuss the issue.

I wonder if it is just coincidence…

The general public doesn’t know it because the corporate news conveniently omits it while shoving Paris/Britney/K-Fed down our throats.

Corporations will be even happier when they can effectively shut down the internet. (Aside from the shopping websites, of course.)

  27. Menehune Says:

#19…You accuse the people here of trying to ascribe one thing (the CA fires) to global warming– yet in the very next point, you go on to say that 1998 was a hotter year than 2007, an argument that is invalidated if you accept the premise of your first argument. One thing (or one year) taken by itself can not be attributed to, or used to illustrate the reality or unreality of global warming. Your first argument had merit, but by making the second argument you show that you are disingenuous.

  30. bernard quatermass Says:

Yeah! It is! Plus I have noticed that whenever the temperature changes it is ALWAYS a flat line going straight up or straight down! There are no bumps or divergences in it or anything! It’s weird! And the same MUST be true on a global scale! Those scientists can’t see it! But I can! Odd that, too! Also it’s interesting how I know that this statement (”The Earth is not as warm as it was in 1998″) is true for every point on the globe! I am omniscient!

  35. republicans hate facts Says:

“You can identify that global warming increases the conditions that make bad wildfires…”
Has there been any provable rise in wild fires due to increasing temperatures in California? That were not caused by other causes, such as arson? Would have made a great point in Al Gore’s film - except he no such claim was in his film. Odd! Comment by DreamCrusher — December 3, 2007 @ 1:16 pm

It’s not just warmer temperatures, it’s changes in weather patterns including rainfall and wind that make for more dangerous conditions. Arson may start fires, but it’s not what brings about the brittle conditions that make it difficult to contain them. Actually Gore discussed all sorts of natural disasters that are/would likely get worse due to global warming. I suggest you rewatch the movie, or buy the book.

    “Ah, another warming denier… You’re a fool.”
1998 was warmer than 2006. Avoid that as you may with ad hominem attacks. Comment by DreamCrusher — December 3, 2007 @ 1:16 pm

But 2006 was the warmest year in US history, and one of the warmest ever. This is typical of a warming cycle. Not every year is warmer than the previous due to natural conditions such as el nino/el nina - but you didn’t know that did you junior?

“Actually there are ways of measuring this to some degree of accuracy - so you need to get a grip, you unscientific religious moron.”
OK, so how is it measured, and what is the most recent measurement of this? And no, I’m an atheist, but thanks for playing.

Sounds like you’re still stuck in your childhood programming when it comes to politics. You should apply the reasoning you used to overcome religiousness to that of your political affiliation and values. You might become just as embarrassed at your political ignorance as we are for you!

  41. Juan C. Says:

OK, so how is it measured, and what is the most recent measurement of this?
    Comment by DreamCrusher

Have you read any IPCC document? Please, do, before writing about Climate Change here.

To measure the CO2 concentration an ice sample is broken into small pieces in vacuum; the extracted air is measured with Infrared Laser Spectroscopy. For the CH4 and N2O measurements we are melting the ice samples in an evacuated glass container; CH4 and N2O is detected with a Gaschromatograph. For the isotopic analysis the ice is ground in vacuum with a milling cutter; analysis is performed with Mass Spectrometry.

  46. Veritas Says:

Mary: Craig’s mere presence there with his load of perverted baggage is an embarassment to this country. But what else is new - that’s all that’s left to the GOP at this point - pathological liars, perverts, and criminals.

  47. republicans hate facts Says:

From research used in the IPCC fourth assessment. One of the research pieces behind this is titled “Global warming : Impacts : Forests” and it was done by the EPA ;)

    Forest fires
Rising global temperature might cause forest fires to occur on larger scale, and more regularly. This releases more stored carbon into the atmosphere than the carbon cycle can naturally re-absorb, as well as reducing the overall forest area on the planet, creating a positive feedback loop. Part of that feedback loop is more rapid growth of replacement forests and a northward migration of forests as northern latitudes become more suitable climates for sustaining forests. There is a question of whether the burning of renewable fuels such as forests should be counted as contributing to global warming.

  48. Veritas Says:

I’m ashamed to admit that Larry Craig is an american at this point.

Satyam, I don’t want to see a link to Craig’s comments, I want to see a link to some credible scientific source that global warming was responsible for the California wildfires, at least inpart, and I also want to see a link to a credible scientific source that demonstrates concensus in the scientific community about the amount that man contributes to climate variability compared to nature.

While Craig’s other statements, particularly concerning KYoto are, in my opinion, batshit crazy, the above two statements confirm my understanding of the science, and I am in no way a global warming denier: (1) scientists cannot say with certainty that global warming was the cause of any particular climate event, and (2) there are natural factors to climate change and scientists cannot say with certainty what percent is natural and what percent is the human contribution.

Hey Frantaylor, let’s not get into your id issues on this discussion board. If you’d like to make an appointment, call my office.

Satyam claims that Craig’s statements are a denial of the science. I simply asked for a source on the science. And the two statements I challenge Satyam on are narrow issues that even if Satyam were to concede them, would not affect the broader global warming concensus, which I do not dispute.

  84. Eskwaya Says:

And frantaylor, your logic sounds eerily like, “we cannot wait for the final proof–the smoking gun–that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.” I think you should sit down with a professional and try to resolve the inner conflict.

  85. Davvid Says:

Personally, I think Larry Craig must not have got his complimentary toaster when he was recruited into the gay community… That is why he so bitter and resentful.

  86. Davvid Says:

Is Larry taking his “Wife” and “Kids” with him on this trip?

  87. leopold Says:

craig: It “demonstrates nothing more than her intent to revert the United States to a developing country,”

    Classic right wing misinformation.

    Comment by dim wit

It’s more than that. It’s a classic Republican tactic to accuse Democrats of something that they, the Republicans, are actually doing. It’s been a very successful tactic, too.

  88. thecowboydictator Says:

how low can they go? Do the trolls live in la la land or what? Who cares if he’s gay or not? The GOP. They go round and round with a circle of lies….then the REAL winners speak out….we have RUSH and Annhole and the jerk off (in more ways than one) Billy O spining their bull to the brainwashed no minds.

  89. Zooey Says:

At least the public restrooms in Idaho are safe — for a while. ;)

  90. Hawkeye Says:

“there’s nothing but hot air in Bali.” That and little boys for $20/hour.

  91. boreas Says:

Comment by Veritas: “Boreas: I’ve heard rumor that Inhofe likes little boys and bathroom trysts, too.”

And, of course, there’s the Trent Lott story too. Nothing about these creeps would surprise me any more.

  92. Buckie Boy Says:

Gonna be some sore butts in Bali big time.

They should have a spy cam on Larry, it would make for some interesting TV. Could see it now, Reality TV with Tappy McWidestance and the Boys of Bali, it’s Tappy gone wild.

    Get a grip.

    Comment by DreamCrusher — December 3, 2007 @ 1:00 pm

I assume you live on the same planet as the rest of us. So here’s a question for you: Whether or not you believe in global warming, what harm is there if the populace of this planet takes steps to ensure the health of this planet?

  94. leopold Says:

    CO2 isn’t harmful.

    Comment by DreamCrusher — December 3, 2007 @ 1:35 pm

Anyone remember that scene from “Apollo 13″ where they’re trying to figure out how to build CO2 filters before the CO2 gets so high it kills the crew?

  95. neoconsrscum Says:

Send his sorry ass to secondary when he re- enters the U.S.- and check out his hard drive!

  96. old_hack Says:

    HiB,
What I have said (quite accurately) is that WP is not a prohibited chemical weapon under international law, including the Chemical Weapons Convention.

I’m sure those that died from it appreciate your classification…
