On MSNBC’s Hardball today, host Chris Matthews asked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, “should the Bushies vote for you because you’re the closest thing to keeping him in for a third term.” McCain reacted by laughing awkwardly for several seconds before catching his breath to say, “I hope they would vote for me because they recognize the challenges, particularly in national security.” McCain refused to say whether people who like Bush will like him or not. Watch it:

I guess this statement summarizes the intention of the vast majority of candidates. They appeal for the worst of people. They expect to bring out the worst of people (fear, hatred and ignorance) in order to get voted.

It has worked well, along with some vote tampering for the republicans so far.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:07 pmWhite men. I’m one, but I’m getting damn sick of them.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:07 pmNice to see that John is back to wearing the “preppy” look. Makes him look SO much younger than his 172 years.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:11 pm“I hope they would vote for me because they recognize the challenges, particularly in national security.”
That statement equals “I will keep the war going as long as there’s a profit! Just make me Prezidunce and I’ll be rich!! Got bless the military industrial complex! Oh, and Boo! Did I scare you?!”
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:14 pmI wonder if these candidates have dreams of wobbling to some indiscreet telephone both and emerging as some superhero that guards our borders.
Captian Delusional to the rescue!!
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:21 pmI’m embarrassed this guy is my senator, and what did he ever do with John McCain?
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:25 pmI do not think a vote for McCain is a vote for more of Bush’s policies. They agree on Iraq, but Iraq will not be the same place in the next 4 years as it has been in the last. It won’t even be the same place by election time.
Did anyone read the David Broder piece this weekend on the efficacy - for Republicans - of a McCain- Huckabee ticket? Pretty persusive.

Broder? That beltway hack hasn’t gotten one right in over a decade. And Huck has some prickly questions to answer. Like why he hired himself as a media consultant, and paid himself out of campaign funds.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:41 pmJesus, a walking corpse and a fundy whack-job. Nice, keltoi, with friends like you, the US needs no enemies.

Oh, Broder isn’t THAT bad. He is a big time beltway type, but he seems to have the respect of other beltway types from both sides of the spectrum. Maybe it is an inbred thing among pundits, but he isn’t a wild ideologue, which is nice.
Isn’t the media’s sudden love of Huck weird? Tweety was talking about it today - since when does the MSM cheer for an evangelical?
Of all the R’s in the race, I like McCain the best. His pure physical courage as a POW is not something I can write off, even if his policy views aren’t always to my taste. And it is a pretty thin field.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:49 pmMcCain is old, yes. I think walking corpse a bit harsh.
Huck is a fundy whack job. He kinda scares me, I wouldn’t pick him for VP, especially for a gentleman of McCains years….I dunno. I am just praying Obama gets the Dem nomination so I can vote for him. If it is Hillary and anyone from the Rs other than McCain….I guess it’ll be Libertarian.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:54 pmLooks like McOlds “Bomb bomb Iran” ditty is even more retarded in light of the new NIE. Take some Geritol and help momma knit something sir,you will never be president.
December 3rd, 2007 at 9:00 pmLibertarian is conservative-speak for “I vote a straight GOP ticket, but I don’t like Bush though I voted for him two times.”

Nah, never voted for Bush. Perot-Perot-Nader-Libertarian (Nader didn’t make the ballot in my state in 04) in the last 4 goes. I dream of America with a real 3rd party…probably never happen, but I never vote for the big parties.
December 3rd, 2007 at 9:57 pmCould I suggest a game of dodge ball between McKane and Tweetster?
December 4th, 2007 at 12:18 amThe McCain cackle! Almost as ‘lunatic’ as Libertarian morons like Keltoi that are so STUPID they think anarchy (what libertarianism is) is a desirable goal! Libertarians are the crazy uncles of the Republican party (like Ron Paul). They can be entertaining - but usually only to LAUGH AT - you don’t want to actually get stuck having to deal with them on a daily basis!
December 4th, 2007 at 1:15 am#15: While I disagree with many of their views, I actually respect the (relative) intellectual honesty of the Libertarian position. I at least find it more logical than the Republican Party, which seems to me hypocritical and dishonest at every turn.
That said, I strongly disagree with Libertarian positions on health care, education, taxation, and the environment. And I think the Libertarian candidate for president in ‘04, Michael Badnarik, was a tinfoil hat-wearing loonie. You’d be hard-pressed to convince me he would have made a better president than John Kerry.
December 4th, 2007 at 1:28 amPssst, McCain, as the NIE says, there is no challenge on national security. However, there is quite a challenge on getting Bush’s 9 trillion dollar deficit out of the way, you ignorant a**.
December 4th, 2007 at 6:49 amHe can’t win on this……He only wants 25% of the vote?
December 4th, 2007 at 7:15 amHe’s so indebted to the neocons for funding his campaign he will say anything the Lieberman crowd wants him to.
Last week he accussed Ron Paul of being a pussy for not wanting to bomb Iran. Now that the report has come out stating that Iran has no nuclear weapons program, maybe an apology is in order.
December 4th, 2007 at 7:49 amThe awkward laugh of a “Oh, heck I hope not.”
To be fair to McCain, he wont win the outright evil vote due to his opposition to torture.
December 4th, 2007 at 8:12 amBush is an albatross around the neck of John McCain. He might have the strength to swim 20% of the way with that weight pulling him down–but that’s still a loooong way from shore.
December 4th, 2007 at 8:31 amIs it me, or does McCain in that screenshot resemble Lon Chaney in _London After Midnight_ (the film is lost but still shots remain)?
This would imply that McCain is utilizing some sort of prosthetic makeup device to achieve that hideous grin. This would not come as a surprise.
December 4th, 2007 at 9:32 am#24…But that hairline! That’s straight out of Phantom of the Opera!
