Bush On Saudi Rape Case: I ‘Don’t Remember’ If I Brought It Up With King Abdullah

This morning, CNN’s Ed Henry pointedly asked President Bush why he hasn’t used his “influence” to “do something” about the 19-year old Saudi woman who was the victim of a brutal gang rape and later sentenced to 200 lashes. The Saudi court blamed her for being an “adulteress who invited the attack.”

Bush refused to answer Henry’s question, simply stating that King Abdullah “knows our position loud and clear.” He said he recently spoke to King Abdullah “about the Middle Eastern peace,” but isn’t sure if he mentioned the Saudi case. “I don’t remember if that subject came up.”

When asked what went through his mind when he first heard about the case, Bush brushed aside his role as head of state, instead saying he would have been “very emotional” if it had happened to his daughter.

BUSH: My first thoughts were these.

What happens if this happened to my daughter? How would I react?

And I would have been — I would have been — I’d had — I would have been very emotional, of course.

I’d have been angry at those who committed the crime. And I would be angry at the state that didn’t support the victim.

And our opinions were expressed by Dana Perino from the pulpit — from the podium.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/12/bushsaudiedcnn.320.240.flv]

Despite the President’s strident rhetoric supporting global human rights, the administration has so far refused to condemn the Saudi government and push it to lift the sentence. When asked about the case last month, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said only that the situation is “very discouraging and outrageous. There is an appeals process and we hope that the verdict changes.” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said that the administration was “astonished,” but had “nothing else to offer.”

Looks like human rights aren’t as important as old “family friends.”

Transcript:

QUESTION: On another issue of credibility in the Mideast, at the Annapolis summit, you used your influence to get Saudi Arabia to the table. But I wonder whether now you will use your influence to do something about the Saudi rape case that’s gotten so much international attention.

What goes through your mind when you hear about a 19-year-old Saudi woman get gang-raped by seven men and basically a Saudi court blames the victim and sentenced her to 200 lashes?

You spoke to King Abdullah by telephone in the last couple of weeks. Did you press him on this case? If so, what did you say? And if not, are you giving him a pass?

BUSH: My first thoughts were these.

What happens if this happened to my daughter? How would I react?

And I would have been — I would have been — I’d had — I would have been very emotional, of course.

I’d have been angry at those who committed the crime. And I would be angry at the state that didn’t support the victim.

And our opinions were expressed by Dana Perino from the pulpit — from the podium. And…

QUESTION: Did you press King Abdullah about it personally?

BUSH: I talked to King Abdullah about the Middle Eastern peace. I don’t remember if that subject came up.

QUESTION: But if it’s that important to you, why wouldn’t you bring it — at that level, bring it directly up to King Abdullah?

BUSH: (inaudible) plenty of time. He knows our position loud and clear.

Ok the White House wants the Russian election checked for fraud but allows Saudi to give 200 lashes and 6 months in prison for the victim of gang rape. Sounds reasonable to me.

Can’t interfere with another country’s government, right.

  5. Bush Cover Ups says:

If it were your daughter Mr Bush then the Rapists would be bollock less by now and your daughter would be in counciling with daddy crying to soothe her pain

Get Balls Mr Bush and do what you can , or does cheap Oil cloud your judgement

  6. Bush Cover Ups says:

4 / Ok the White House wants the Russian election checked for fraud

then why did Bush tell the Election oversights they were not allowed to go to Russia, why did Bush pull the plug on them

Putin is good for Russia and the world , If it were not for Putin we would all be bullied by America, if not killed by America exeptionalism

dont forget more people worldwide trust Putin than Bush

How could the king “know our position loud and clear” when Americans don’t know Bush’s position on this matter? And evidence suggests he doesn’t have one.

  9. Menehune says:

Mr. President, does 200 lashes to a rape VICTIM constitute torture or not? Perhaps your old friend John Ashcroft would be willing to submit to 200 lashes to show that it is not really torture.

I don’t think Bush had any idea what that question referred to. How about this one as a follow up: “Women in Saudi Arabia are denied the right of free travel, are not permitted to drive, and can’t work without their husband’s permission. And they can’t vote to change this because Saudi Arabia is not a democracy. Why hasn’t the U.S. threatened sanctions against Saudi Arabia for its horrible human rights record?”

  12. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but nothing I’ve read has suggested that the woman who was raped and sentenced to 200 lashing was 12 years old?

Aside from that, Bush would most likely say that his daughters were asking for it if it happened to them.

  13. texaslady says:

#8 So why did the World famous Chess Player, Garry become imprisoned for 5 days when challenging Putin? And he was obviously abused looking at his face when released.
Putin is good? So many journalists have had deadly “incidents” happen to them who have dared to question Putin. So this is how you think the world is better by not questioning a government?

And no, I haven’t heard that Bush was sending then called off any investigation, we don’t have a right to investigate another country with the fraud we have right here on our own elections.

I’m sure Bandar had another drink of scotch and smiled in a wily manner when Bush refused to admit he had pressed the Saudis over this. What a disgrace.

    ###

First I would say the aide should be immediately fired, but they already did that as soon as they found out about it. Then I would say the justice system should get involved – but it already has. Lastly, if the aide pleads guilty, like Larry Craig did, I would say they shouldn’t get to take their plea back. Also, if the aide decides to plead innocent, then they should contact Tom Delay and Rudy G. to find out how to set up a legal defense fund.

  37. tnrc75 says:

26-no..it’s not a better question. That doesn’t reflect government endorsement of child rape while our refusal to push our good friends the Saudis suggests a willingness to turn the other cheek when it’s financially expedient for us. So no, go away with your weak-ass trolling.

  38. 2MillionLightYearsToAndromeda says:

BUSH: My first thoughts were these.

What happens if this happened to my daughter? How would I react?

Now multiply that by 1.2 million people you a-hole. You killed 1.2 million daughters, sons, mothers and fathers in your illegal war in Iraq! Do you get emotional about their unnecessary deaths?

  39. toasterhead says:

    Comment by Billy Hill — December 4, 2007 @ 1:21 pm

And the Senator in question has fired the staff member and is cooperating fully with the investigation.

  40. Shayne says:

Hillbilly, of course W would do nothing he’s never done anything regarding any of the Republican sex scandal. However the Democratic Senator immediately fired the staff member. And yet you Hillbilly, in your infinite stupidity show up here and act like this is relevant.

    Comment by toasterhead — December 4, 2007 @ 1:35 pm

yeah but the only reason he’s “cooperating” is because it’s the opposite of what the republicans have done in similar situations, right billy?

  43. missmolly says:

A better question for the day would be “what do you think should be done to stop attempted child rape and child rape here in the US by a Senators staff member via the net”?

    Comment by Billy Hill — December 4, 2007 @ 1:21 pm

Trying to distract from the topic with a shiny object?

In the first place — what makes this a “better question”? That it took place in the United States instead of Saudi Arabia? Or that it was the staff member of a Democratic Senator? Neither one of these qualifies it as a “better question”.

Second — the staff member was quickly fired and arrested. Our system of justice will take care of him. It’s doubtful that the staff member’s victims will be punished.

Now, back to the topic. Bush is playing a wildly convoluted game of dodge ball to avoid 1) appearing to condone an aspect of Saudi justice that almost all Americans find abhorrent, and 2) offending his Saudi buddies. Do you have anything to say about this?

Today I am more concerned about the plight of the Mental Pigmies of Neo-Conia. The growing international news influx has brought on a reading frenzy with truths and facts to the locals. Never in their history have they been exposed to these amounts of exposure and the results are devastating. Increased lies, hypocrisy, abandoning a sinking boat, and the like. This is a much bigger problem than a little rich boy who broke the laws and is going to be punished according to the laws of the land.

saudi arabia’s inexorable ascendence is due (in full) to their exportation of energy to the developed and developing worlds. americans consume more energy, per capita, than any other country in the world.

while an informed comment, it still doesn’t absolve us of the question of what bush can realistically do in this type of situation (in a press briefing room).

while i agree with the ’cause,’ and the ideas behind it, we all have to take some responsibility for this. saudi arabia has an awful government. and so do we. but the corporations in both countries, and the millions of employees and consumers they serve, are continuing to serve a function, with or without the government.

so, to stop trading with saudi arabia, because of one rape victim, is insane, no matter how heinous the sentence on her.

LOL! He could care less about his wild twin daughters: Jen and Tonic.

“And I would have been — I would have been — I’d had — I would have been very emotional, of course.”

And that is why Jack Daniels [his daytime friend and nighttime company] that he yearns for gets him through his daily emotional duress.

This is just pain and suffering day to hear such stupid and retarded rhetoric from this clown President. It’s a never ending story with him.

  92. Leftside Annie says:

Oh god. Not *another* stupid Bushtoady apologist troll….!

Darla – I’m all in favor of us not trading with the Saudis. That’s a nation ruled by a dictatorial and corrupt monarchy, full of religious extremists who hate us (Osama bin Laden, etc.), that has a worse human rights record than China. They behead criminals there – at least in China they shoot them in the back of the head.

If America had any moral high ground left (which we don’t), we would not trade at all with SA – we would develop alternative sources of energy so we would not have to kiss their tryannical, medieval butts – and look the other way when a 19 year old girl is punished with 200 lashes for having the gall to be gang-raped by 7 men.

    Shame on us.

  93. texaslady says:

Actually Jenna has changed her wild style, has written a book depicting the pain of a young mother suffering with aids. Jenna also said she, “disagreed on many issues with her father.”

  94. texaslady says:

Not Trade with Saudis ? Their countrymen 15 of the hijackers bombed our buildings and killed 3000 Americans and we allowed them special travel out of the U.S. without even questioning them. You think Bush would say anything over a trivial problem of a poor woman being imprisoned for being gang raped? Please.

I’m not driving, and I don’t much – maybe 100 miles a month. Don’t need it, and wouldn’t miss it.

105 – and that’s different from your approach how???

  100. philomena says:

Bush should be made to watch the lashing. Based on standard practice, each lash will take roughly 4 seconds. There is generally a 15-20 second pause after 50 lashes to implement a substitution for a rested lasher. So anticipate somewhere in the neighborhood of slightly more than 14 solid minutes of watching a 19 year-old woman being repeatedly, systematically, unrelentingly flogged, complete with scores of welts breaking open along the flayed scapular region, mid-back and shoulders, the torso, buttocks and legs drenched in blood, the body generally sprayed from blood, feces and urine, initial screams and howls of agony, followed by pathetic groans, then eventual silence as the victim collapses into shock-induced unconsciousness.

But Bush right in their, ringside, so he can witness first-hand.

Hugo lost his bid to be a dictator. If you supported him because of his dislike of Bush, the reason you bought gas from Citgo has changed. Now your supporting the peoples of Venezuella, and not the commie. They thank you.

    Comment by Southern Man

I could care less whether Chavez likes or dislikes your Bushgod. That obsession is your little neurosis. I have a better reason for buying all of my gas from Citgo. Unlike Bush’s friends, the DICTATORS of Saudi Arabia, Hugo Chavez, the LEGALLY ELECTED President of Venezuela, does not support the Wahabi terrorists who attacked the United States.

Isn’t it amazing how these Bush worshipping wingnuts love brutal dictators, like King Abdullah, and General Musharraf who support and harbor the very terrorists who attacked our country, while they despise democratically elected leaders like Chavez or former French President Chirac, just because they criticized their Chosen One. It just shows they care nothing for our country. Their only allegiance is to Bush.

  108. Moderation says:

A different day means a different approach to whatever subject you progressives have on the agenda. Today it’s the rape of a Saudi woman who gets punished for being a woman in Saudi. Bush doesn’t do anything about it, and you crucify him for it. Last week he was villified for meddeling in other countries affairs, which many of you wrote” That’s why the world hates us, he needs to stay out of their business!”. Which is it progressives. Does Bush stay out of other countries affairs, or does he force them to adhere to the same rules most of the western world does? It’s so pathetic, it’s funny. Do you read what you write anymore?

    Comment by Southern Man — December 4, 2007 @ 3:52 pm

There is a significant difference between publicly criticizing (or even applying diplomatic pressure), and forcing one’s views with the barrel of a gun. The former is OK. The latter is not. The former involves words (and potentially quashing deals unrelated to national security). The latter involves billions of dollars, and violating another human being’s right to live.

You would not have to MAKE a sociopath like George W. Bush watch such a horrific spectacle. He would gladly PAY to watch it, and would likely make sure the U.S. taxpayer shelled out the moola for front-row, PREMIUM, blood-and-sweat-and-feces-and-urine-splash-zone, ringside seats.

No, such would not give him pause. It would encourage his abhorrent behavior.

After all, he certainly feels something with regards to his daughter, yet…by his own speech strongly indicates with physical and mental cues that he does NOT feel for the ACTUAL woman who is being tortured by Saudi Arabia.

putting bush’s weak-as-piss response aside, where are the united nations on this? – they should be going balls out to put a stop to atrocities such as this – don’t they have human rights reps there? – reminds me a few years back of a woman in,i think it was sudan (could be wrong there),who was condemned to death by stoning after being convicted of adultery, and then after huge international outcry and pressure, she got a reprieve – why isn’t the same thing happening with this girl from saudi arabia?

  112. Lefty Patriot says:

Southern Pansy, punked again. You’re not going to get away with your antiAmerican treason on this board, SM. Take it tp LGF, they’d like to see their deomocracy turned into a third-world dictatorship, which is Bushco’s goal.

it’s funny, but your characterization of saudi arabian culture-politics smacks of self-importance. the united states is viewed around the world as being just as awful, if not worse, than saudi arabia.

“we would develop alternative sources of energy”? oh man, i have no idea as to how to respond to such overt simplicity.

to finish, i just how one poster assumed i was a bush republican, despite my existence as a black, jewish, lesbian, herb-growing hippie from northern california…..
