The BBC reports:
[T]he new NIE will make it harder for proponents of military action against Iran to argue their case.
One source, who has close links to US intelligence, said that members of Vice President Dick Cheney’s staff continued to call for military strikes against Iran “on a daily basis”.
Atrios adds: “It must be understood that since our intelligence agencies don’t believe Iran has a nuclear weapons program, it also means that they don’t know where such a program would be physically located if it did exist. This means that any desires of Dick Cheney and his people to bomb Iran simply involve… bombing the shit out of Iran.”
Cheney: “Facts, I decide what the facts are.”
December 4th, 2007 at 1:43 pmlol lastnight on Newshour they had some Repug talking head saying:
“You know, in 1979 Iran just decided to make us a bad guy.”
December 4th, 2007 at 1:44 pmUsing the standard bush logic, the reason we should bomb Iran is becuase Saudi Arabia flogged a 12 year old girl for complaining that she was gang-raped.
December 4th, 2007 at 1:46 pmThe are once again not planning based on intelligence, they are molding intelligence based on the plan..
December 4th, 2007 at 1:46 pmI think this has been the plan all along. They are just patiently, gradually working their way through it (or should I say, lying their way through it).
One track mind. Bomb the shit out of _________ (fill in the desired ME nation…)
December 4th, 2007 at 1:48 pmRemember–this is a man who KNOWS the shit he’s shovelling is of the BULL variety. He should be arrested.

I saw that too. It shows how much the neocons are still living in the past. The people of today’s Iran, most of which were born after 1979, think highly of US culture and want better relations. Drop one bomb on Iran and that all goes away. I was disappointed the other two pundits in the interview didn’t raise that point.
December 4th, 2007 at 1:54 pm472 British MP’s were question of whom 338 oppose military intervention without UN backing……. Will be a lot lower now
And the 132 Tory bstards should be ashamed of themselfs
December 4th, 2007 at 1:58 pm#9…like nothing happened before 1979, either? There was that thing with the Shah…
December 4th, 2007 at 1:58 pmThe first poll, a Harris Interactive Survey, was released on 9th November 2007. It was conducted in five European countries and the U.S. found that the use of military force against Iran is backed by just 8 percent in France, 7 percent in Germany, 8 percent in Italy, 8 percent in Spain, 11 percent in the U.K. and 21 percent in the U.S. The poll was conducted for France 24 television

December 4th, 2007 at 1:58 pmOnerous is on the Chimp Cabal. Their one and only prerequisite for bi-lateral talks and negotiating was their stopping their Nuclear program. Now that is done is Chimpy and his minions going to honor their word?
Do not hold your breath. Chimpy just got called out and he is left holding his empty six shooter.

December 4th, 2007 at 2:01 pmThis morning on Ed Schultz a caller pointed out that for the last several months Bush’s rhetoric has changed from “Iran producing” a nuke to “Iran gaining the knowledge” to produce a nuke. Like the caller said, how can you stop knowledge? The US has cherry-picked which countries it has allowed to “gain the knowledge” and “produce” weapons up to this point. I think the NIE was held up just long enough to modify their talking points. Nothing has changed other than the words. The drum beat remains the same.

December 4th, 2007 at 2:10 pm“Iran gaining the knowledge†to produce a nuke
Whoah! That’s one HUGE back-pedal from the “actively developing nuclear weapons” line. Almost gave the entire World whiplash!
December 4th, 2007 at 2:10 pmJust think how close we came to a nuclear attack on Iran. Scary shit.
Pelosi and Reid deserve a large part of the blame for this situation. They took impeachment off the table.
Bush figured since Dems didn’t impeach him for lying us into war with Iraq, they wouldn’t impeach him for lying us into war with Iran.
I hope Pelosi and Reid know how close we came to WW3 due to their cowardice. They could’ve had 100’s of millions of deaths on their hands.
December 4th, 2007 at 2:10 pm#22…since “gaining the knowlege” on how to build a nuke can practically be done without leaving Wikipedia, I’s say so!

“Just think how close we came to a nuclear attack on Iran. Scary shit.

I know this will sound crazy, but what if they made a deal with bush to exchange no impeachment with no attack on Iran? It’s not like they could have locked him up from the jump. there would have been months of hearings and stone-walling and bush could have dropped the bomb at any time and once the bomb was dropped dems would be painted as trying to distract the “war prezdent” by fauwnewz et al. I know this sounds pretty much out in wingnutosphere, but what the hell, just a thought.

Gen Wesley Clark has and will be playing a key role. IMO he has been a significant factor keeping the deluded Cheney in check.

I’m sure there are a thousand secret deals we know nothing about. But I don’t think War-Monger Cheney would EVER make that deal. He makes his fortune killing innocent brown people. He’s might actually have to go out, get a job, and make an honest living.

The BS regime that apparently decided to suspend research on nukes? Why would you want that?
December 4th, 2007 at 2:32 pmAnd after a war starts with Iran, are we going to see Iranians waiting with flowers in hands for us just like the Iraqis did,and received us as ‘liberators’?
Cheney told Tim Russert on NBC ‘Meet The Press’ few days before the war started with Iraq in March of 2003 that Iraqis will recieve us as liberators, when asked a bout any military resistance by the Iraqis…Cheney then, did not think so.
Bush and Cheney still have one year left to rule and govern, and many things can happen in one year, since there is a lot to gain and lose in the coming next year elections.

You mean the regime that halted their nuclear weapons program when it foudn that the costs far outweighed the benefits? The regime that hasn’t invaded its neighbors? The regime that helped us defeat the Taliban? That regime?
Why should they overthrow that regime?

Yup, and it’s all about the benjamins for the Dickster. Dickster, with bad heart and all, is still working around the clock on the koolaid crapola spin on Iran. Same Iraq playbook, same plan, but different country.
December 4th, 2007 at 2:53 pmThe Iranian govennment didn’t do it to help out with the fight against international terrorism considering they are a known sponsor of international terrorism. They did it because it was just another threat to their power in the region and they saw an opportunity to do something that they couldn’t do on their own if they tried. BTW they didn’t have a problem with letting al-Zarqawi slip thru their country into Iraq after the invasion of Afghanistan.
Comment by Tracy2 — December 4, 2007 @ 2:52 pm
Oh my god! You mean the Iranians acted in their own self-interest? How, er, selfish of them. You certainly wouldn’t expect the US to act in its own self-interest, right? Well, you would, but that’s different, right?
You’d also like to substantiate your inference that the Iranians deliberately allowed Zarqawi to travel through their country? One person traveling through a country nearly the size of Alaska?
December 4th, 2007 at 2:58 pmIran has denied forever and day that a covert nuclear bomb building program has NEVER existed in their country.
Comment by Tracy2 — December 4, 2007 @ 2:57 pm
How sneaky of them! Wow. You wouldn’t catch a country like Israel doing that, would you? Or, well, maybe you would.
December 4th, 2007 at 3:00 pmRe 51
Yes lies. The bush adminstration knew that the Iranians were not trying to build a bomb, yet they kept claiming the opposite. that is a lie.
“BTW they didn’t have a problem with letting al-Zarqawi slip thru their country into Iraq after the invasion of Afghanistan.”
Just like Reagan didnt’ have a problem training and outfitting bin laden in Afghanistan. (how do you like non sequiter strawmen?)

December 4th, 2007 at 5:12 pmTracy,
“down play Iran’s nuke program insinuating that it didn’t exist”.
Can you find any evidence of TP or any of us doing that while there was a Weapons program? No? Then they were apparently right, so what’s your point exactly?
You appear to be arguing just to argue and fail to admit that your bloodthirst for Iran is unfounded and hypocritical. Please take note and move on. You are wrong.
December 4th, 2007 at 5:21 pm45 – Does that mean you and Chuck are going?
p.s. kicking that can saves me a lot of $ that I would have to spend on gasoline, so I reckon I will keep kicking it. (I’m using the savings to buy gold, so that after the economy collapses, I can use it to make you do whatever I want (god do i love it that righties will do literally anything for $$)
December 4th, 2007 at 5:34 pmIt is possible that Cheney/Bush attempted to smuggle nuclear warheads away from our own airforce very recently. Remember when those nukes “accidentally” flew over the continental US to the ME staging area? The entire chain of command was broken on that one. I believe 14 signatures are needed just to load one armed missile on a plane. It was to bomb Iran or perform a false flag operation.
