Fox Defends ‘Muslim Hater’ Michael Savage, Says He Is ‘Very Supportive’ Of ‘Muslims And Islam’»

On Fox News this morning, host Megyn Kelly offered a full-throated defense of right-wing talker Michael Savage, who is suing the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) after it encouraged a boycott against him over a recent anti-Muslim tirade on his show. Amongst other things, Savage called the Quran a “book of hate.”

Kelly and her guests — attorney Trish Deangelis and defense attorney David Wohl — all spoke in support of Savage, who they said is being “targeted” “intentionally” and “maliciously” in “a brutal battle” with an “organization” that took him “out of context” and “sues just about anybody”:

Deangelis: They “said that he’s a Muslim hater. If you watch Michael Savage, you know that is absolutely, that couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Wohl: “They take a snippet of it, and they take it out of context unlawfully and they use it to interfere with Michael Savage’s prospective business, that is actionable.”

Kelly: “Should these advertisers want to be seen as caving to CAIR? An organization that is very controversial.”

Deangelis: “Putting misrepresentations in a letter. That’s exactly what they were doing, using fear to harm Michael Savage.”

At the close of the segment, Kelly took a moment to give “one quick final word” and attack CAIR, saying that “CAIR does sue just about anyone who says anything derogatory about it, refusing to acknowledge people’s right to their own opinions about CAIR.” Watch it:

It’s not surprising, however, that Fox News would rush to his defense. Just as they did with Rush Limbaugh’s “phony soldiers” comment, Fox almost always circles the wagons around conservative talkers who get into trouble with offensive comments:

- In August, when right-wing rocker Ted Nugent said he wanted Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) to “suck on my machine gun,” Fox’s Sean Hannity refused to “disavow” his “friend and frequent guest.” Other Fox hosts dismissed it as a “joke” from “a man who likes to speak his mind.”

- In September, after Bill O’Reilly made casually racist comments about a Harlem restaurant, Fox defended him, running chyrons on their shows saying: “CNN gets suckered by website” and “Distorting the truth: O’Reilly gets taken out of context.”

- In October, when Rush Limbaugh said troops who opposed the war are “phony soldiers,” phony battle and total mischaracterization of Rush Limbaugh’s comments” and another host saying “the transcript backs [Rush] up.”

Savage has a long record of bigoted attacks on Muslims and the Islamic faith. In April 2006, he even suggested that Americans should “kill 100 million” of “these psychotics in the Muslim world.”

When it comes to bigotry against Muslims, the line that runs from Savage, Malkin, O’Reilly and Coulter to the mainstream of the Republican Party is a short one.

What? This from the network of Bill (My boycott brought France to its knees and I’ll boycott the Mavericks) O’Rielly? Now they’re against boycotts? And why are they supporting a lawsuit against a group they say “sues just about anybody”? Are they running an experiment to see just how short their viewership’s attention span really is? If that’s the case they’re going to have to contridict themselves quicker than that.

If ANYBODY here on TP were to say anything against Christians or Jews that even approaches the hate-filled comments of Savage toward Muslims, I will not hesitate to condemn their post.

But I have NEVER heard anyone here — liberal or conservative — say anything close to “they’re never going to me on my knees braying to the pulpit,” or “they’ll never get me in a yarmulke,” let alone advocate deportation or killing of Christians or Jews merely because of their faith.

  26. missmolly Says:

Why is it that every time some fool says something stupid, his apologists claim he was either misquoted or quoted out of context?

Did or did not Michael Savage say, “I’m not gonna put my wife in a hijab. And I’m not gonna put my daughter in a burqa. And I’m not gettin on my all-fours and braying to Mecca. And you could drop dead if you don’t like it. You can shove it up your pipe. I don’t wanna hear anymore about Islam. I don’t wanna hear one more word about Islam. Take your religion and shove it up your behind. I’m sick of you.”??

And, “I think [Muslims] need to be forcibly converted to Christianity…It’s the only thing that can probably turn them into human beings.”

And recommending that it be made illegal to construct mosques in the United States?

Would somebody please explain what possible “context” he could be making these hateful remarks in that would convince me he’s “supportive” of Muslims?

As far as Fox rushing to his defense, that’s no surprise. They love any bigot — as long as they’re good for ratings and Murdoch likes them.

Well, to be fair, I did use the exact phrase “and I’m not gettin on my all-knees and braying to the pulpit” in an earlier post on this topic, but that was an ironic midrash of Savage’s comments.

I can’t speak for all posters, but I think most progressives make the distinction between Jews and Christians and “jews” and “christians.” The former being people of genuine faith who practice what they preach, and the latter being the utter hypocrites who lead the Christian Zionist/neoconservative movements that are hell-bent on destroying the United States.

  33. gummitch Says:

You have to admit, this is a really fair and balanced “news” show. They got two right wing attorneys–one of them apparently a good friend of Savage’s lawyer–who are convinced that using radio clips broadcast over the public airwaves violates copyright privilege and have them interviewed by a right wing “journalist” who interjects comments delegitimizing CAIR . . . how much more fair and balanced could you want?

According to the clip (which was incredibly painful to sit through since I can’t scream at the computer while I’m at work), Savage has already lost $1 million in advertising revenue. While this is almost certainly a bloated figure, it’s nothing but good news, in my opinion.

  34. Peter C Says:

    Please note:

“They took him out of context!”

    AND

“We’re suing him for copyright infringement for showing such a long clip without PERMISSION”

This is too ludicrous for words.

He said it. It was deplorable. He (and his supporters) should be criticized by right-thinking people everywhere, including his sponsors.

Some quotes from Mr. Savage, showing his support of Muslims and Islam…

    * You know, when I see a woman walking around with a burqa, I see a Nazi. That’s what I see, how-do-you-like-that? A hateful Nazi who would like to cut your throat and kill your children. Don’t give me this crap that they’re doing it out of a sacred ritual or rite. It’s not required by the Quran that a woman walk around in a seventh-century drape. She’s doing it to spit in your face. She’s saying, ‘You white moron, you, I’m going to kill you if I can.’ That’s how I see it! What do you want me to do, mince words with you? I’m not going to mince words. We’re too far gone in this country.
    o July 3, 2007

    * The Islamists smell weakness in the West and are attacking us on several fronts at once: one, through outright war; two, through immigration; three, through their propaganda disseminated through the liberal media and four, through the liberal courts. Only a devastating military blow against the hearts of Islamic terror coupled with an outright ban on Muslim immigration, laws making the dissemination of enemy propaganda illegal, and the uncoupling of the liberal ACLU can save the United States. I would also make the construction of mosques illegal in America and the speaking of English only in the streets of the United States the law.
    o November 27, 2006

    * But when it comes to the war, they [the Bush administration] mismanaged this thing, not from the war perspective, but from the pacification — they’ve gone too mild, and they thought that the people are our friends, but what they don’t know is when you’re dealing with Arabs, there are no friends. They’re old rug traders going back a thousand years in that part of the world. Right now, one side is your friend; the other side is your enemy. The next day, they’re both stabbing you in the back and picking your pockets. But I guess they don’t teach you that at Yale. They teach you that all cultures have something to offer the world.
    o -October 20, 2007 ??

    * And these are intelligent people, wealthy people. They are very depressed by the weakness that America is showing to these psychotics in the Muslim world. They say, ‘Oh, there’s a billion of them.’ I said, ‘So, kill 100 million of them, then there’ll be 900 million of them.’ I mean, would you rather die — would you rather us die than them? I mean, what is it going to take for you people to wake up? Would you rather we disappear or we die? Or would you rather they disappear and they die? Because you’re going to have to make that choice sooner rather than later.
    o -April 17, 2006

    * Right now, even people sitting on the fence would like George Bush to drop a nuclear weapon on an Arab country. They don’t even care which one it would be. I can guarantee you — I don’t need to go to Mr. Schmuck [pollster John] Zogby and ask him his opinion. I don’t need anyone’s opinion. I’ll give you my opinion, because I got a better stethoscope than those fools. It’s one man’s opinion based upon my own analysis. The most — I tell you right now — the largest percentage of Americans would like to see a nuclear weapon dropped on a major Arab capital. They don’t even care which one. They’d like an indiscriminate use of a nuclear weapon. They want this over with. One thing people cannot live with, which is an undefined, limitless conflict, which is what we have now. They can’t take it. They want this war over with, and they want it ended like the war against Japan. They’d like Big Boy dropped on one of the little cities over there. They don’t care where. They don’t care any more. The American people have had it up to here with this garbage.
    o -May 12, 2004

    * In fact, Christianity has been one of the great salvations on planet Earth. It’s what’s necessary in the Middle East. Others have written about it, I think these people need to be forcibly converted to Christianity but I’ll get here a little later, I’ll move up to that. It’s the only thing that can probably turn them into human beings.
    * -May 12, 2004

    * The white male is like the stingray: You keep hunting him down, you’re going to wind up with a barb in your chest. They haven’t seen the white male. They don’t understand the white male dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. They don’t remember what the white male is capable of because he’s been awfully subdued for a long period of time. But if push comes to shove, I can guarantee you all the turbanned folks are going to find out all over again just how vicious the white male can really be. They keep provoking this nation, they’re going to wind up with a mushroom cloud over their country. As sure as I’m sitting here, Tehran will be 55,000 degrees and rising one morning, and we won’t have to put up with that Hitler anymore.

The people of this country are no longer entitled to any of this thing called truth and must find it on their own. Facts are difficult when lies are louder and people become more and more stupid. You have to lead the way in showing people how to read a graph or a pie chart without becoming hungry.

  61. Severus Says:

I honestly don’t think Michael Savage hates Muslims. Republicans generally try to make everyone who is not them into an enemy of some sorts. It is their way of segmenting the market, it has been their strategy for years and it works. If they ran strictly on the issues they would generally lose every time so they have to make each voter believe they they are passionately behind the issue that particular voter believes in most. Usually it ibis done so forcefully that the segmented voter only focuses on that issue and ignores all the others that may or may not generally be harmful to them. Gun Control, Abortion, Death Penalty, Crime, etc… They never pass any meaningful legislation on the issues, if they did that segment would be open for other issues, so it is not in their best interests to do anything about their hot button issues. Heck they managed to pass laws legalizing torture and ending Habeus Corpus, you would think they could pass something banning abortion, wouldn’t you?

Anyhow back to Savage, keeping the above in mind and knowing that Republicans hate everything, I think Muslims are simply Savages assignment for hate. He could have easily been assigned Libruls or Anti-Gun Nuts or flag burners. But no he was assigned Muslims so his segment is the Christian right and placating them by letting them know that Republicans hate Muslims just like they do.

Anyone know what happened to the last lawsuit Michael Wein… — uhhh, “Savage” — filed alleging similar tortious interference with his bidness? Did that one get laughed out of court with Rule 11 sanctions?

    Cheers,

Why don’t you get upset when Libs attack Christians or Jews?

Oh, we got nothing against Christians and Jews, in fact some of us is ‘em. We just can’t stand eedjits, hypocrites, and “Christian Reconstruction” fundie foamers trying to do bin Laden’s work for him here….

    Cheers,

I look forward to the moment Weiner is caught in bed w/ a dead woman or a live boy, or perhaps we’ll get extra lucky and it’ll be both, at the same time.

#77 that would be the super lotto……..but hey…..you can’t win if you don’t play…………sooner or later..someone will come up w/some dirt on this lowlife.

  75. JPark91 Says:

“I honestly don’t think Michael Savage hates Muslims.”

You are absolutely wrong. Weiner hates everybody that isn’t similar to him.

  76. Bluestocking Says:

Isn’t it ironic — not to mention absolutely amazing — how quickly people like Savage, who often condemn other people for claiming victimization, turn around and try to portray themselves as victims when it suits them to do so?

I’ve learned this lesson the hard way…there are very few true victims in this life, but plenty of unwitting or heedless volunteers. The truth is far more often than not somewhere between the two extreme ends of the spectrum for locus of control — between the conservative at one end who loves to pontificate about “taking personal responsibility” (but as often as not changes his tune when it’s his/her turn to do so), and the extreme liberal on the other end who prefers to overlook the fact that people often do play at least some role in their own misfortunes and that there are people in the world who not only don’t want to take responsibility for themselves but who actively resist any attempts to make them do so. Nobody forces Savage to say the sort of things he chooses to say on the air. He’s free to his opinions with regard to Muslims, of course, and even to voice them — but to say the least, there is room for debate concerning whether he should be allowed to use the airwaves to do so. He’s entitled to free speech just like anyone else — but nothing in life comes without a price tag of some sort attached, and freedom of speech is no exception. Freedom of speech either applies to everyone or it does not apply to anyone — and if Savage would consider himself at liberty to criticize or boycott someone for saying something he finds offensive, then other people are fully entitled to do the same to him.

    Dear Cold Hard Stool,

“Apparently, it’s only the feelings of Muslims that count, particularly when tens of thousands of them are ready to riot at the appearance of a comic or teddy bear to which they find offense.”

I invite you to walk to a busy streetcorner in middle America, take a dump, and wipe with the American flag. Then stand back and feel the love.

Did you run out of comics to read? If you are nice Mom might buy you some more.
