Norman Podhoretz, widely reputed to be the “godfather” of neoconservatism, has been one of the most aggressive hawks clamoring for war with Iran. Podhoretz laid out the “The Case For Bombing Iran” in a June cover story in the right-wing Commentary Magazine. He insisted that the Iranians were very close to developing a nuclear weapon:
[Iran’s] effort to build a nuclear arsenal makes it the potentially most dangerous one of all. […]
“[A]ll this negotiating has had the same result as Munich had with Hitler. That is, it has bought the Iranians more time in which they have moved closer and closer to developing nuclear weapons.”
Yesterday’s NIE proved Podhoretz’s claims were false. Rather than modify his views on Iran, Podhoretz — who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 — aired a nasty conspiracy theory yesterday, attacking the authors of the NIE and accusing the intelligence community of deliberately “leaking material calculated to undermine George W. Bush:”
I must confess to suspecting that the intelligence community, having been excoriated for supporting the then universal belief that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, is now bending over backward to counter what has up to now been a similarly universal view (including as is evident from the 2005 NIE, within the intelligence community itself) that Iran is hell-bent on developing nuclear weapons. […]
But I entertain an even darker suspicion. It is that the intelligence community, which has for some years now been leaking material calculated to undermine George W. Bush, is doing it again. This time the purpose is to head off the possibility that the President may order air strikes on the Iranian nuclear installations.
After insisting that Iran was “only a small step away from producing nuclear weapons,” and after pushing for military strikes against Iran for months, Podhoretz is apparently determined not to let facts get in the way of his prayers for an Iran war.
UPDATE: Podhoretz isn’t the only conservative desperately spinning the NIE to buttress his hawkish positions. Some other examples from conservative blogs:
Strata-Strata: “This smells like another leak by forces in our intel community trying to — once again — influence our national elections.”
Powerline: “But the report offers no reason to be less concerned about the likelihood that Iran will possess nuclear weapons in the near future, and no reason to doubt that our own willingness to take military action is one of the factors that will influence decision-making in Tehran.”
Michelle Malkin: “What’s not making headlines (the certainty that Iran indeed had a nuke program) is as telling as what is making news (the halting of the program in 2003).”
Seth Liebelson at the Corner: If Iran shut its program down in the fall of 2003 MIGHT, MIGHT, MIGHT it have anything to do with it noticing that the US militarily took out its neighbor (another enemy of the U.S.) earlier that year for, among other things, having a concealed WMD program?
Michael Rubin at the Corner: “If Iran was working on a nuclear weapons program until 2003, what does this say about U.S. policy in the late Clinton period and European engagement?”
News Hoggers and SadlyNo have more.

You betcha,
That oil that belongs to those who inhabit the land where said oil is located.
I’d be building nukes too to thwart any attempt at taking away what is rightfully belongs to me.
And if we turned the Middle East into a glass factory, we wouldn’t have much of a World to enjoy our “stolen” resources.

December 4th, 2007 at 2:50 pmHAW HAW HAW! Oh that is just priceless! Now the NIE is a liberal plot of some kind?
December 4th, 2007 at 2:51 pmThey will all join Podhoretz soon and blame the NIE, the media, the Dems and the “librals” for causing their boy-king to be uncomfortable.
They will ignore that Hadley said Bush got this intel months ago (one, two or eleven?) and Bush said he got it last week.
Bushie also said that when he first heard of new intel, he didn’t get what it contained, only that it was “new.”
If someone came to the president with such incomplete and useless information, why didn’t he demand a full report? Was he purposely avoiding hearing facts then so he could deny he knew anything today?
Also, since when is it a crime to have knowledge? Bush has gone from demanding that Iran give up the (non-existent) weapons program, to now demanding they be denied even knowing about weapons.
Soon he will be demanding that people stop thinking. Or, perhaps he would prefer a state such as in the movie “minority report” where the thought police get you if negative thoughts come to your mind and you might do something “bad.”
December 4th, 2007 at 2:52 pmThat’s better.
Neocons back alleging huge conspiracy theories instead of being relevant or influential.
Ahhh.
December 4th, 2007 at 2:54 pmThe fact that he refuses to alter his rhetoric and insists that nothing has changed is an admission that intelligence plays no part in his decisions. It also is proof that the invasion of Iraq was based upon falsehoods and that he was blatantly lying when he said in the months before that he hadn’t made up his mind about invading.
The intelligence changes but his assessment doesn’t. Great.

Oh come on, Roger — even you usually pay more attention than this. Focus.
TP has never made a claim that Iran has completely shut down all nuclear activity, because they haven’t. They continue with their nuclear power program.
And it was an NIE report (not TP) that made the claim that Iran halted all activity having to do with developing nuclear weapons back in 2003.
And you’re right — there really IS no reason to attack Iran, but Bush, Cheney, and all their neocon buddies won’t rest until they find one. Even Bush is putting a bizarre spin on the NIE report:

This was way too conspicuous of an announcement with perfect timing. It would have been too easy for the MSM just to have ignored this latest NIE, instead of making it a headline. Keeping Americans shopping, working, and spending money is more important than any other perceived international threat. Look for a change in message after the shopping season ends. Most businesses make 1/3rd of their revenue for the entire year during the holidays. Things got off a bit sluggish after Thanksgiving, with the Iran threats pushing up the price of gas. So we have a little reprieve. Sometimes scaring people will backfire. Not all of Bush’s “friends” make money solely on war. Some make money selling products to regular Americans.

Do you know how to read? Have you bothered to look at any of the polls on Congress. It is true that this congress is polling low, but when you look at whether the person polled thinks the Republiscums are doing a good job, I believe the last time it was something like 20% or the Democrats doing a good job, this one was in the 30’s. Overall no one is happy with Congress. Most people are unhappy that the Republiscums are obstructing everything (you do remember the Rebpubliscums screaming about an “up or down vote”, don’t you) and they are mad at the Democrats for allowing the Republiscums to get away with the obstruction. Then there are the 24%ers who are mad just because the Democrats are in control.
I really would like to see an in depth poll of people’s opinions about Congress not just “do you think they are doing a good job”. My bet is on, if the Democrats stopped letting the Republiscums get away with obstructing everything, that Congress and the Democrats in Congress polling numbers would soar.

Big difference between developing nuclear power for energy needs and developing nuclear weapons. Iran has been doing the former (and that’s never been a secret), and according to the non-nuclear proliferation treaty, they may do so.
Now how are they “endangering the world”? I suppose that if they have a Chernobyl, that would possibly cause problems with a neighboring country if they build a power plant close to their border. But if having nuclear power plants is endangering the world, then we need to go to a new level of concern, because many countries have them.
December 4th, 2007 at 4:03 pmUmm #18 RR I don’t think the current president of Iran shut down the weapons program, check out when he was elected… Also by reading your other posts, it is painfully obvious that you have no clue as to the difference between nuke energy used for power production and nuke energy used for power projection, or rather utility grade uranium and weapons grade uranium. Here’s a hint…weapons grade uranium is much much harder to produce.
Again RR #46 are you totally unaware of why congress has low approval ratings? It is mainly due to Republican obstructionism. Read up on this, people still support the democrats agenda, they disapprove of the way republicans are filibustering nearly everything at a record pace, and what they don’t filibuster Bush Vetoes. Here is a cute little story for you.
I was recently in Washington for Tax seminar. One of the speakers was a lobbyist. He talked about this bill or that bill for a while and mentioned how one party (no names) wanted to keep congress tied up and unproductive for the rest of the session in order to help his party’s chances in the 2008 elections. Later he talked about a particular revenue-neutral bill that would solve an issue positively for both the democrats and the republicans, a rare win-win situation. His group presented it to the minority leadership who rejected it outright on the grounds that they can not allow any positive bills to pass through congress. Nice. Way to go obstructionists, way to thwart the will of the people.
#66 how did the democrats obstruct congress when they were the minority? Please give some examples. Right now that is all the republicans do. If the dems used the same tactics a lot of the bills bush signed never would have existed. Perhaps you missed the news about how the republicans would hold committee meetings and completely shut out democrat input. I believe the chorus was we won the election, we get to decide what occurs. and from the gallery it was shut up and be ruled, we won let us have our way. Sorry, but you are dead wrong on your assertion.
Also anyone wonder who wrote this opinion and why it differs so wildly from the 2005 NIE? Who the heck wrote that one? My guess is the 2005 one was written by the same guys who gave the intelligence prior to invading Iraq.
