White House Reveals Bush Lied: Was Told In August Iran’s Nuclear Program ‘May Be Suspended’»

iranOn Tuesday, President Bush said he was never forewarned by the intelligence community that Iran had suspended its nuclear weapons program in 2003:

In August, I think it was John — Mike McConnell came in and said, We have some new information. He didn’t tell me what the information was.

Now the White House is revealing that wasn’t true. In fact, Bush did know what the information was. CNN reports:

President Bush was told in August that Iran’s nuclear weapons program ‘may be suspended,’ the White House said Wednesday, which seemingly contradicts the account of the meeting given by Bush Tuesday.”

The White House statement released by Dana Perino tonight also states McConnell told Bush “the new information might cause the intelligence community to change its assessment of Iran’s covert nuclear program.”

On Tuesday, Bush said “nobody ever told me” to back down from his hawkish rhetoric on Iran. No, maybe not. But Bush knew Iran “may have suspended” its nuclear weapons program and that the intelligence community was in the process of “changing its assessment.” And yet, he continued to warn of “World War III” and a “nuclear holocaust” because nobody told him specifically to stop.

UPDATE: Dan Froomkin reported today that Bush deceptively “changed the way he talked about Iran” starting in August. “Instead of directly condemning Iranian leaders for pursuing nuclear weapons, he started more vaguely accusing them of seeking the knowledge necessary to make such a weapon. Even as he did that, however, he and the vice president accelerated their rhetorical efforts to persuade the public that the nuclear threat posed by Iran was grave and urgent.”

Digg It!

My God. Will we get the truth on Bush’s latest round of lies?

Pat Buchanan said this morning on MSNBC that Biden should call Rice and Mike McConnell before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to ask them POINT BLANK — did they tell Bush about the NIE Report? No more bullshit Condi — give us a yes or no answer.

Buchanan said if Rice or McConnell didn’t tell Bush about the NIE Report, they should be fired on the spot. If they did tell Bush and he continued with his warmongering threats against Iran, well . . . Buchanan didn’t say, but we can fill in the blanks. It’s impeachment time.

By the way, it’s past time to demand the truth from Air-Head Perino. She tosses her hair, gives a slight smirk, and lies through he teeth to protect her buddy Bush. Enough already.

  5. patooty Says:

IMPEACH! This is an indictment of Bush and Cheney. It also proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is precisely what he did with Iraq. War crimes! Treason!

If we think Bush looked bad yesterday, just imagine what he’s going to look and act like by the end of next week when the avalanche of bullshit comes crashing down upon him. He’s in the throes of a nervous breakdown right now.

All of BushLaden Productions smirks. I had a boss who did the same thing. I was better liked by my fellow employees, had better technical knowledge, and was a better worker. So basically he lied to his supervisor to put me on notice. He would constantly smirk and scratch his ass. It would seem then that Smirking is a sure sign of lying.

Well that clears that up Bush lied. Now why were Bush/Cheney busy trying to get the public support I think it was for Israel as Lieberman is on a mission to make sure Israel gets to own the land they has settled on that belongs to the Palestinians. Notice how the attack on the Iran President was hosted by a Jewish president of the college, protesters were Jewish and even with proof Israel still wants the US to bomb Iran. The US is being used by Israel to do the job they can’t even with the Nuclear Weapons the Bush Administration gave them.

  17. nwmuse Says:

Bush and Cheney don’t use words to ‘convey’ information, they use words to manipulate people. They have done it the entire time they have been in office. I don’t understand why people keep expecting to hear real, honest information from them. What I REALLY don’t understand is why Congress hasn’t gone after them a LONG time ago when all the lying and secrecy first began.

Similar (Multimedia and IT). You are 100% correct. Many managers job is to “thin the herd”, i.e., get rid of older workers, where they can get a less competent worker for less money, usually younger, even if they are not as smart or talented.

If you think about it, most operations can run without a manager. In fact, a highly skilled technical crew can self-manage. BushCo is the same. Incompetents in managerial positions.

  21. Xisithrus Says:

t would have been nice if those Iran guys had just told us when they stoped their nucular stuff 2 years ago. I know it would have saved me many a sleepless nights.

A little off topic, but I wanted to point this out:

Did everyone notice that Bush began his press conference yesterday with taking a swipe at Congress? He did the same thing back in Oct., as I found on the WH web site:

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. We’re now more than halfway through October, and the new leaders in Congress have had more than nine months to get things done for the American people. Unfortunately, they haven’t managed to pass many important bills. Now the clock is winding down and in some key areas Congress is just getting started.

  38. Bad Eye Says:

    Here’s another tidbit.

In the 10/17 press conference, Bush was told of Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to Tehran, and that Putin saw no evidence that Iran wanted to build a nuclear bomb.

    Bush’s response:

I — as I said, I look forward to — if those are, in fact, his comments, I look forward to having him clarify those…

So as our own intelligence agencies was digesting info that pointed to Iran halting its nuclear program in 2003, and the revelation that Bush new about this in August, once again he still was playing “dumb” in Oct.

asked me to sign a petition here:
    http://www.democrats.org/HopeNotFear

    And reminded us:

Rudy Giuliani: “Iran is nuclear threat, not just because they can deliver a nuclear warhead with missiles; they’re a nuclear threat because they are the biggest state sponsor of terrorism and they can hand nuclear materials to terrorists.”

Mitt Romney: “If for some reasons they continue down their course of folly toward nuclear ambition, then I would take military action if that’s available to us.”

Mike Huckabee: “A President has to do whatever is necessary to protect the American people. If we think Iran is building nuclear capacity that could be used against us in any way, including selling some of the nuclear capacity to some other terrorist group, then yes we have a right [to attack]. We the people are powerless before the organized political racketeers of the republican and democratic parties. They are each utterly corrupt. Not simply in the conventional sense of worshipping mammon, either. Appallingly, they are corrupt when the issue is war and peace.

This nation was Big lied into unleashing war upon the people’s of Iraq nearly five years ago. The same people, using the same tactics, have once again attempted to stampede us into yet another war.

But for all the democrats seemingly care, the issue may as well be an interstate transportation bill. Just who is calling the shots in that party anyway?

As Progressive Pacifist I have managed to remove all emotion from my body there for I can accept and be satisfied with what ever happens in the world.

You are not a pacifist in the real sense of the word. You are also not a progressive! What you are is dead to the world. You need to be in therapy.

I have no feelings of hate, angst, envy and all that drives others to do and say foolish things. I accept, no, welcome what ever happens with open arms. So if Iran is or is not building a nucular bomb it matters not to me. If half the world is blown up I could not care less.

Actually, if this is how you really feel, (no feelings of caring for others, compassion, empathy) you are insane.

Mike Huckabee can do or say what ever he wants….so what? Hillary, O’ Bomba, John Edwardscissor hands…..who cares. I am in a state of euphoria and its all natural.

“And yet, he continued to warn of ‘World War III’ and a ‘nuclear holocaust’ because nobody told him specifically to stop.”

Does this strike anybody else as odd? That our president seemingly can’t even take a dump without somebody “specifically” telling him to do so?

When we have a president who openly gives excuses like “nobody ever told me”, we have traveled a long, long way from Truman’s “the buck stops here” sign on his desk. We’ve always known that we have a puppet sitting in the Oval Office — apparently now even Bush is admitting it.

missmolly: The nobody told me excuse is just another bush lie to the people to cover his butt. He’s the biggest pussy on the planet who can’t admit he is wrong or ever own up to anything. Of course, he knew about it the moment these 16 agencies began to assess their intel. And that was probably somewhere in 2005 since it took them a full year before the NIE report was prepared. This means that Bush knew since sometime in 2005 - a far cry from what he’s spinning about just learning about it this August.

In fact, he should be removed for gross ineptitude right now if he claims that he didn’t know what 16 intelligence agencies within his administration and under his supervision were doing.

Either way, he’s hoist on is own pitard right now. He’ll never spin his way out of this one.

There are too many credible individuals involved in these 16 agences to fall on their sword for Bush this time. They did it only because he had the power back with he cooked the books on Iraq. This time they’ll hang him out to dry by his gonads.

  112. patooty Says:

And this is precisely the type of lie the people need to learn before they can connect the last and final dot in the 911 puzzle. One must ask oneself if there is anything this president would not lie about and they will begin to see the truth.

President of the United States Bill Clinton was… acquitted by the Senate on February 12, 1999.

The trial proceedings were largely party-line, with no Democratic Senators voting for conviction and only three Democratic Representatives voting to impeach. In all, 55 senators voted “not guilty,” and 45 voted “guilty” on the charge of perjury. The Senate also acquitted on the obstruction charge with 50 votes cast each way.

Not quite sure why this thread has become about Clinton, BTW.

Oh… that’s right… we’re supposed to forget about Little W’s latest “stepped on his own dick” episode, again.

    LOOK! Something shiny!!!

  128. Bad Eye Says:

So even when Bush changes his rhetoric, based on changes in intelligence, he is still being “deceptive”. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t, I guess.

    Comment by DreamCrusher — December 6, 2007 @ 3:52 am

Therefore, if Bush changed his tune based on intelligence, then he must have known more in August than he is admitting.

Here, let me re-post what Bush said:

In August, I think it was John — Mike McConnell came in and said, We have some new information. He didn’t tell me what the information was.

Let me say it again: Bush would have us believe that he was told at that time that there is new intelligence but no details were given to him. As well, he apparently didn’t ask any questions as to the nature of the intelligence, whether it had been vetted or not.

So why would he change his tune in the intervening months if he knew nothing about a possible change in Iran’s ambitions? And no one told him to tone down his rhetoric, yet he starts singing a different tune.

Given this, Bush’s revelation that “nobody told me” regarding the nature of the intelligence, and his statement that no one told him to tone down the rhetoric, is B.S.

  149. pluege Says:

bush has given republicans a golden opportunity to save their party from the ravages of association with the bush/cheney regime. If republicans were to push for impeachment proceedings to investigate bush lying they could get the jump on what many know now, and most everyone will come to know: that Pelosi/Reid were wrong to protect bush and inflict the disaster of this regime longer on the US than necessary; that bush/cheney should have been impeached and removed long ago; and that Pelosi/Reid failed their duty and their oath of office.

republicans pushing for impeachment proceedings would be a 4 punch knockout move for them. It would:

    1) clearly distance them from bush
    2) make democrats look awful
    3) allow them to recover from their image as the lawless anti-constitutional party bestowed on them by bush
    4) allow them to recover from the atrocity of their politically motivated Clinton impeachment.
