The faulty 2005 NIE that said Iran was racing to develop nuclear weapons was “written by some of the same team that had produced key parts of the flawed Iraq estimate.” The “starkly different view of Iran’s nuclear program that emerged from U.S. spy agencies this week” drew lessons from the “intelligence debacle over supposed Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.”
“Confidential Arkansas state government records, including letters from these women, obtained by the Huffington Post,” reveal that, as governor, Mike Huckabee pushed for the release of convicted rapist Wayne Dumond despite being warned that the convict would strike again. December 5th, 2007 at 9:06 amOn Wednesday, the US Supreme Court takes up two potential landmark cases examining the legality of America’s treatment of terror suspects at the Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, prison camp.
The stakes are enormously high, not just for the detainees but for the Bush administration as well. If constitutional and other legal rights extend to the 305 enemy combatants currently being detained at the naval base, administration officials, military officers, interrogators, and others could be forced by federal judges to appear in open court to reveal every detail of how detainees were captured and treated – including harsh interrogation methods and alleged torture. If the administration refuses to comply, the remedy under habeas corpus is immediate release from custody.

It should also be noted, that while they are now defending their statements on the grounds “no one knew for sure yet”, that is an argument for NOT hyping the threat they way they did. Instead, they spoke with MORE certainty when they KNEW the report they were suppressing said otherwise.

December 5th, 2007 at 9:38 amThe striking thing to me was how consistent the rhetoric was, even though it was wrong. In their individual pressers, both Hadley and Bush used the same “biggest pole in the tent” argument, regarding Iran’s ability to produce an actual working weapon. They both also used the “carrot-and-stick” analogy incorrectly, which gave away the fact that they were parroting the same nonsensical line. Both used “carrots and sticks” like the “carrot” was what we offered Iran, and if they didn’t comply, we beat them with a “stick” to get their compliance. I don’t think either gave it a second’s thought, but it was very telling to someone who saw both interviews.

December 5th, 2007 at 9:45 amEU: Report hampers new Iran sanctions
The US intelligence report is likely to complicate efforts to impose sanctions on Iran at the UN Security Council, say European officials.
“Officially, we will study the document carefully; unofficially, our efforts to build up momentum for another resolution are gone,†said one European official as quoted by New York Times.
The European officials, who declined to be identified under normal diplomatic rules, stressed that they were struggling to understand why the US chose to issue the report just two days after the G5+1 meeting over a new Security Council resolution on Iran.
Meanwhile, Vitaly Churkin, the Russian Ambassador to the UN told reporters that “we have always been saying there is no proof they are pursuing nuclear weapons,†paying tribute to the report as proof of Russia’s position.
Germany also hailed the assessment and a spokesman for the German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the finding “contains a number of interesting detailsâ€.
However, it appeared that Britain is not content with the report and a statement from the British Foreign Office said “we will discuss the report with US analysts in more detail in the coming daysâ€.

December 5th, 2007 at 9:56 amSome questions for Tom Tancredo:
1) Do you have any statistical information as to how many undocumented residents are criminals? Even an approximate percentage? A small percentage of ANY group of people will be a criminal element we don’t want. Please provide some evidence that the percentage of illegals is significantly higher.
2) Do you have any statistical information as to what percentage of ALL gang criminals are undocumented? Or are you deliberately leaving out that bit of information to imply that the problem is bigger than it really is?
3) Don’t people who commit crimes get arrested? And when someone who isn’t supposed to be here gets arrested, doesn’t that sort of blow his cover? Wouldn’t he get deported?
4) You have made a lot of noise about “securing our border” and not letting any Latinos into the country illegally (strangely, that’s the only ethnic group you’re worried about). How, exactly, do you plan to do this in a way that works? You can build a fence, but immigrants just tunnel underneath. You can put more guards on the border, but this just creates more people for the coyotes to pay off.
My guess is that you are just pandering to people’s emotions to gain some traction. Logical thinkers just see your argument as containing more holes than our southern border.

Didn’t we learn from the past ?
WMDS of Iraq war is no longer news to this administration or anybody…the day after.
Comment by tarazan — December 5, 2007 @ 9:52 am
Bushney is still spinning the threat. He claims that the NIE report provides a “warning signal” — laying the groundwork for a case for bombing Iran USING this report, if you can believe that.

The IIC will make their case even if they have to make stuff up. Just like they did with Iraq. And shame on us if we fall for it again.

We do. We learned in 2004 how susceptible the Presidential vote is to the whims of morons who think boys kissing is a more critical issue than an illegal and unprovoked war.
This time we’re nipping this in the bud before the Christian Taliban can be mobilized.
December 5th, 2007 at 10:11 amI have a sneaking suspicion that they were hoping to provoke military action against Iran before the report came out.
Comment by Mugsy
Oh, that’s impossible. Imagine they attack a country and later find out that that country was’nt building nukes or WMDs. Imagine the dumb @sses they would make out of themselves… wait…
Seriously, Iran hasn’t been attacked because Russia and China are very involved now, even escalating the rethoric against another imperial war and because American people is certainly more aware of the misinformation brought up by US admin.
December 5th, 2007 at 10:13 amMy prediction: Continue to say that Iran is a nuclear threat, supports terrorists, Al-Qaeda, blah blah 9/11, and we must fight Iran over there so we don’t fight them over here.

Just thinking like a semi-competent manager, if I’m about to make a big decision, you better believe that I canvas my staff asking them what they know about the situation. They know to come to me with any information they have.
I’d think nuking a country just might qualify as a big decision.

Sure, and they are all ready doing it.
Read this.
Read the words of Ms. Rice:
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would not directly respond to Ahmadinejad’s remarks, but told reporters in the Ethiopian capital Wednesday that the public release of the National Intelligence Estimate showed the Bush administration was committed to transparent democracy while Iran was not.
So, you can add No transparent democracy (not like the SCOTUS in 2000 and 2004) to the rethoric.

Ahhh, but your analogy is not quite equivalent, you see.
They’ve already made the big decision to nuke Iran, probably years ago. Now the administration is canvassing the staff asking them to provide info that will support their decision. Watch for a purge of non-team-players in the intelligence agencies in coming months.

Have you had your coffee? Do you realize you’re asking a (R) for not only facts but statistical proof? The anti-science people won’t let facts get in the way of the fear factor.
The death penalty would have been abolished long ago if statistics had any sway. The same is true for immigration: the stats don’t match up to the unsubstantiated fear.

“The Iranians have a strategic choice to make,” he said. “They can come clean with the international community about the scope of their nuclear activities, and fully accept the long-standing offer to suspend their enrichment program and come to the table and negotiate, or they can continue on a path of isolation.”
1/ “They can come clean – THEY ALREADY HAVE THICKO
2/ with the international community _ WHO AMERICANS IGNORE AND CAN KIDNAP AND TORTURE IN ANY COUNTRY
3/ about the scope of their nuclear activities _ DOES THAT MEAN YOU WILL TELL US ABOUT YOUR OWN NUKES
4/ offer to suspend their enrichment program – THEY ALREADY DID THAT FROM 2002 to AND YOU DOUBLE CROSSED THEM
5/ come to the table and negotiate – YOU ARE THE ONES WHO DONT WANT TO TALK
6/ path of isolation – COULD BE NO WORSE THAN AMERICAN ISOLATIONISM AT PRESENT

And I tell you I smell desperation.
These thugs need another 9/11 badly. They are trying to pull off another one. So, we can go to war with Iran.
My thoughts exactly. Time for plan b. Has anyone tried to connect the dots between the outing of Valerie Plame and Iran stopping their nuclear program? Both seemed to be happening about the same time–kinda makes you wonder.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:22 amNew to this, but have been reading for quite some time. I noticed that since the NIE report came out that the “trolls” have been awfully quiet.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:26 amHow come I don’t see anything in the media regarding the current governor of Texas, Rick Perry, who is said to be deleting his emails every seven days as I heard on NPR? New Gallup poll shows growing confidence the surge is working:
“The Surge Effect — Gallup Poll 12/5/07
Four in 10 Americans now say the U.S. troop surge in Iraq that began earlier this year is making the situation there better. This is up from 34% four weeks ago and from 22% when Gallup first measured it in July.
Since August, more Americans have tended to say the surge is making the situation in Iraq better rather than worse, but today’s ratio — 40% vs. 20% — is the most positive yet recorded. Thirty-nine percent of Americans currently say the surge is not making any difference; this is down from 43% in September and 51% in July.
The acknowledgment from some Democrats, such as Rep. John Murtha, that “the surge is working” might be expected to have at least softened criticism of the surge among rank-and-file Democrats. Thus far, that is not apparent.
Currently, 18% of Democrats say the surge is making the situation in Iraq better, no different from the 19% saying this last month. Republican attitudes on the question have remained about the same. The upward movement in positive reviews has come mostly from political independents.”

And only 11 % say very well.

Keep in Iraq Until Stabilized 41
Bring Home As Soon as Possible 54

NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll conducted by the polling organizations of Peter Hart (D) and Bill McInturff (R). Nov. 1-5, 2007. N=1,509 adults nationwide. MoE ± 2.5 (for all adults).

Disapprove 68

December 5th, 2007 at 12:48 pmRUCerious,
As you acknowledge, it is now an even split between those who say things are going well and things are not going well in Iraq….The % of those who said things were NOT going well was much higher until the success of the surge became evident. So, the trend is towards optimism.
The second question is ambiguous — What does “As soon as possible” to those answering the question? Does that mean “immediately?” Does that mean “as soon as AQI is defeated?” Or does it mean something else to each indvidual respondant?
As for Bush’s ratings re: the war — I am certainly not making the argument that the war or Bush’s handling of the war are popular. Certainly that is not the case.
But quite frankly Bush’s ratings at this point are irrelevant. He cannot run for office again. By this time next year, we will elected a new president….So, the more important figures to look at are how the American people view what is going on in Iraq. It is THAT number that will influence the presidential candidates and whoever is ultimately elected.

HUD Sends New Orleans Bulldozers and $400,000 Apartments for the Holidays
By Bill Quigley
t r u t h o u t | Report/Perspective
Monday 03 December 2007
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/120307A.shtml
“On the 12th day before Christmas, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is planning to unleash teams of bulldozers to demolish thousands of low-income apartments in New Orleans. Despite Katrina causing the worst affordable housing crisis since the Civil War, HUD is spending $762 million in taxpayer funds to tear down over 4,600 public housing subsidized apartments and replace them with 744 similarly subsidized units – an 82 percent reduction. HUD is in charge and one HUD employee makes all the local housing authority decisions. HUD took over the local housing authority years ago – all decisions are made in Washington, DC. HUD plans to build an additional 1,000 market rate and tax credit units – which will still result in a net loss of 2,700 apartments to New Orleans – the remaining new apartments will cost an average of over $400,000 each!
“Affordable housing is at a critical point along the Gulf Coast. Over 50,000 families still living in tiny FEMA trailers are being systematically forced out. Over 90,000 homeowners in Louisiana are still waiting to receive federal recovery funds from the Road Home. In New Orleans, hundreds of the estimated 12,000 homeless have taken up residence in small tents across the street from City Hall and under the I-10.
“A federal court has refused to stop the scheduled demolitions. Residents offered evidence to show the three-story garden-style buildings were structurally sound, and pointed out the local housing authority itself documented it would cost much less to repair and retain the apartments than demolish and reconstruct a small fraction of them. The New York Times architecture critic described them as “low scale, narrow footprint and high quality construction.” HUD promised to subject plans for demolition to 100 days of scrutiny – yet approved demolition with no public input in less than two days.
“Reduction of crime was supposed to be the main reason for getting rid of thousands of public housing apartments – yet crime in New Orleans has soared since Katrina, while the thousands of apartments remain shut.
“There may be crime in the projects after all – even if the residents are gone. Consider the following examples:
“Investigative reporter Edward T. Pound, of the National Journal, has uncovered many questionable and several potentially criminal actions by HUD in New Orleans. Pound reported HUD Secretary Jackson worked with, and is owed over $250,000 from, an Atlanta-based company, Columbia Residential. Columbia Residential was part of a team that was awarded a $127 million contract by HUD to develop the St. Bernard housing development. Columbia was also awarded other earlier contracts for as yet undisclosed amounts under still undisclosed circumstances.
“What is scheduled to happen in New Orleans is happening across the United States. It is just New Orleans offers a more condensed and graphic illustration. The federal government is determined to get out of housing all together and let the private market reign. A 2007 report of the Urban Institute confirms that in the last decade over 78,000 low-income apartments have been demolished by HUD. That is why locals are receiving support and solidarity from residents and housing advocates in Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and New York.
“Poor and working people in New Orleans and across the globe are living on property that has become valuable for corporations. Accommodating governments are pushing the poor away and turning public property to private. HUD is giving private developers hundreds of millions of public dollars, scores of acres of valuable land, and thousands of public apartments. Happy holidays for them for sure.
“For the poor, the holidays are scheduled to bring bulldozers. The demolition is poised to start in New Orleans any day now. Attempts at demolition will be met with just resistance. Whether that resistance is successful or not will determine not only the future of the working poor in New Orleans, but of working poor communities nationally and globally. If the US government is allowed to demolish thousands of much-needed affordable apartments of Katrina victims, what chance do others have?”

December 5th, 2007 at 1:35 pmDemocrats hold a stable advantage in the Congressional vote (51 to 41 percent) – their new plateau for almost all of 2007. And more relevant for 2008, Democrats are well ahead (54 to 37 percent) in the 35 Democratic battleground districts, including their 2006 pick-up seats.
And perhaps even more relevant, the Democrats are running ahead (48 to 42 percent) in the Republican-held battleground seats.
Democrats have moved into a stable lead in the named balloting for Congress – bigger than the margin they achieved in 2006.
voters hold their Democratic House incumbents (asked by name) in high esteem – a judgment stable over the last six months; while Republican incumbents are losing their voters – with their favorability ratings falling significantly over the same period, particularly in the last month.
