Bush gives out wrong mortgage hotline phone number.»

During his speech today announcing his plan “to ease the mortgage crisis for consumers, President Bush accidentally gave out the wrong number for his new “Hope Now Hotline” that worried homeowners are encouraged to call for assistance. CNN reports:

President Bush accidentally gave out the wrong phone number for the new “Hope Now Hotline” set up by his administration.

“And I have a message for every homeowner worried about rising mortgage payments: The best you can do for your family is to call 1-800-995-HOPE. That is 1-800-995-H-O-P-E,” he said.

Anyone who dialed 1-800-995-HOPE was greeted by just a busy signal.

Watch it:

The correct “Hope Now Hotline” number is 1-888-995-HOPE.

Those damn advisers gave him the wrong information again.Or maybe he just doesn’t know how to read.

  5. raynman Says:

Pretty soon we’ll have right wing blogs talking about the telephone conspiracy that had them change the number after the President was adamant about the number.

Needless to say, we should pursue calling the wrong number, even though we know the right number.

Thompson: Maybe Iranians leaked that false number.

    Perino: He was being truthful.

    Bigfoot: Let’s bomb that number!

Exley: I’m so very well-read therefore the 800 number was correct.
Yep, I was correct. Others are wrong. I am right. You are wrong.

Bolton: This is another example that Iran won’t cooperate and are threat to the existence of humankind.

He used 1-800- instead of 1-888- and this is newsworthy here? A pretty simple mistake. “Let’s bash Dumbya today! Wait, we do that all day everyday. Let’s do it anyway. It’s so much fun and so rewarding.” Get a life people. He’ll be gone next year. And he can’t run again if I remember corrrectly.

Oh, sure. Blame the number.

  17. missmolly Says:

I’m giving Bush a pass on this one. This slip-up is most likely the fault of a staffer, who is probably feeling pretty embarrassed about it right about now.

I expect a lot out of any President, but I don’t expect the President to have to personally check out every phone number handed to him by his staff.

While this is the sort of “oops” that could easily happen to anyone, I hope the White House has made steps to correct it so people will have the right number.

  18. a in pa Says:

here’s the problem. Bush is an idiot. He can barely read. So maybe someone did give him the wrong number. Is he just surrounded by nimrods? Maybe if he hired people who take the time to transpose a Gdamn PHONE NUMBER this kind of moronic stuff wouldn’t happen all the time. Oh man, what a damn shame. What a waste.

  19. Theresa Says:

It’s a sign. The plan is doomed to be a fiasco.

  20. Severus Says:

It’s those damned Iranians messing with the presidents teleprompter! We need to bomb the crap out of them for this.

It has come to my attention that Bush is not a terribly bright fellow!

  23. RUCerious Says:

  24. VerbalKint Says:

I want to know whether he was given the wrong number, or read the wrong number from the teleprompter. The latter wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

Really, to make sure he got the number right, his handlers should have rigged him up with the radio box and earpiece he used in the ‘04 Presidential debate.

  25. Krazny Says:

Reminds me of the Ron Burgundy film. Bush probably reads whatever is on the teleprompter without thinking. He is a good little droid.

  26. Menehune Says:

22…well THAT was a foregone conclusion. What hasn’t been with these guys?

  27. texaslady Says:

Bush has created the problem himself…should have gotten his facts or lies straight the first of the week. Now anything he says is late night material for the comics. Sometimes you should just shut up.

  28. leftcoast Says:

  29. Fan of Man Says:

  30. ralph the wonder llama Says:

I’m guessing he was given the right number and just went ahead with what he assumed the number would be. Or maybe he just misspoke.

But toasterhead is absolutley right. Isn’t it kind of important that people who need the help that the number is meant to provide would get the right number?

  31. Cappy Says:

    At least he didn’t say, “1-800-HOPE. That’s 1-800-H-O-A-P”.

Menhune-If he did misread it off a teleprompter, that’s worse. It means he can’t even read!

Bush has made a habit of hiring the worst people possible for any task. This staffer could well be another Regents graduate, or the son/daughter of some well connected neocon or a Pioneer so no, I don’t think he’s earned a pass.

Or you could just be a nicer, more reasonable person than I am. ;-)

The mortgage crisis is, and it’s disgusting that this lifeline is being held out to the peasants so they can debase themselves begging to keep the home they bought.

    So there.

  48. HopingForChange Says:

Seems to me that giving out the wrong phone number is the least of Bush’s problems these days with an economy that is on the ropes and the prospect of massive forclosure actions.

Bush seems to be more of a Johnny-Come-Lately in dealing with the problems that have mushroomed out of subprime mortages and morphed into a huge financial system meltdown risk. It appears he and Paulson are trying to head off much more onerous penalties on the lending industry, which likely will come from the Democrats.

Bush also seems to be at odds with many of his die hard Cheneyish supporters on a bailout of borrowers. It would seem that the hard right group might want to consider helping the speculators and investors in real estate, but never bail out the borrowers. Of course, we might learn in time that Bush is going to help the flippers because this group is now holding the bag on a huge number of new houses just constructed and not occupied. The inventory of speculator held housing might run some of the big builders out of business and, my guess is that the bulider lobbyists will hope for investor/speculator/builder releif from the Bush administration as well.

The bailout plan for borrowers as proposed might not be all that generous as it only covers folks who are barely into payment deliquency and took out a mortgage since 2005. It might not have much of a bite.

A second issue is that Bush is now proposing tax exempt bond issuance to fund subprime loans on a local basis. This is pure and simple taxpayer bailout. Although most people who now have a home mortgage and take a tax deduction are already subsidized by the US government, so maybe tax exempt treatment for sub-prime investors isn’t all that bad.

It’s interesting to note that Henry Paulson is now apparently conceding that the lending industry was under-regulated in recent times. I wonder if Bush figured out that Paulson was slamming the Bush administrations go easy market based regulation approach?

    On a serius note:

The Bush administration’s position, that technology, private investment and economic growth — rather than mandatory emissions cuts — will save the planet from global warming, is taking a beating this week at a U.N. climate change conference in Indonesia.

The public defeats for the U.S. stance, coupled with mounting warnings from scientists and others that only decisive action will control rising temperatures, have cast the Americans as wayward sons who need to wake up and join the rest of the world.

If the mortgage crisis was only hurting those poor sods with subprime loans, you can bet this administration would be twiddling their thumbs and cussing out the irresponsible borrowers. Their problem is that if all those mortgages default, it’s the banks that end up taking it in the shorts, and we’re sure not going to allow that to happen.

  83. patooty Says:

Bush’s idea of a help line is a circle jerk. Now I’m wondering if there even is such a line and program. Bush’s has reached this point of believability long, long ago. Now everyone’s a cynical critic and he has no friends left but Barney and Wilma (oops…that ace driver of his named Laura).

Nah — I just tend to cut people slack on screw-ups I have made myself (or could). Bush has done so many things worthy of real outrage that it’s not worth getting worked up about the small stuff.

I also made the assumption that it was the fault of a staffer. It COULD have been Bush’s fault — if it was on the TelePrompter correctly and he read it wrong.

The main thing is — no matter who screwed up, the correct number should be communicated to the masses ASAP. Not just for the people who will want to call it, but for the poor suckers who are at the other end of the number Bush DID give out. They are probably having a horrible afternoon of wrong number callers.

  87. patooty Says:

  88. patooty Says:

missmolly: The honest thing to do is to get out front and center and admit to making the mistake and correct it immediately. Michael Moore is a sloppy documentarian. who tells the truth, and produces wildly popular books and films. There’s your criticism, fluffer.

Righties wish they had anyone to compare to him, but they don’t, so they constantly attack him, even though no one cares or believes them.

  111. Dr. Matt Says:

Do you even know what a non sequitur is? Apparently not. I’d love to see anyone at this site criticize Michael Moore for having done the same thing. Only Moore did it to call someone else a liar. Bush just plain goofed.

Mr. Moore isn’t president. Try to keep up, skippy.

  112. pat of wheaton Says:

There is something about a Bush Presidency and real estate scandals kept quiet until the end of their terms. Remember the Resolution Trust and the Savings and Loan fiasco that occurred at the end of President George H.W. Bush’s term and now the sub prime mortgage fiasco for young George. One thing in common to both is the absence of meaningful oversight and regulation.

Now raising a problem without a solution is unacceptable. My solution would be to make the properties more affordable. Currently the mortgage tax deduction results in about $40 Billion dollars of tax benefit to US citizens. Congress should increase the deduction for mortgage interest for a temporary period, 3 years maybe. Everyone could claim as a deduction 150% of the interest paid on their first mortgage. This rewards both those in trouble and those that struggle and make the payment. Pay for this by adjusting the Bush tax reductions. In addition, it will make home ownership more desirable. Further, all mortgages that have been issued in the past 6 years would be made fully assumable to a buyer. This could help increase the options available on the market.

Let us not try to solve this problem by taking care of the banks and investors. Let’s solve it at home.

  113. tombaker Says:

Sorry Pat - You’re not a billionaire, so what you think about it won’t matter in the final tally. Same as goes for the rest of us.

  114. Dr. Matt Says:

DreamCrusher is proof that reich-wingers are irrelevant. Criticizing a movie that came out over 5 years ago. Priceless.

  115. tombaker Says:

and i didn’t even get any credit for criticizing moore - what a ripoff

(p.s. to Fluffer. I said way back up thread that it was an honest mistake, the 800 vs. 888 slip)

Is this cousin also the ‘friend” you went to SF with, and the neighbor who quit drinking 2 years ago, or are they simply all relatives?
And how are you going to tow your home around with your 35 year old Dodge if your cobble a computer room onto the side?
Oh, wait, you could just get a few wheelbarrow tires and some all-thread while you’re at Home Despot….

  120. tombaker Says:

if we all just decided to keep hammering on the 800 vs. 888 thing for the next year or two, you’d have a real comprehensive example of what it’s like to disagree with Righty these days. our little version of the swiftboat bullshit. would you like that?

  121. Leftside Annie Says:

We’ve got a lot of catching up to do, Dreamy.

  122. tombaker Says:

So I’ll take that as a “No, Tom, I do not like the taste of the Righty medicine” answer. Thanks.

or would you prefer I cook you up another batch?

  123. tombaker Says:

fragile? show me the Righty that can take 40 years of being marginalized??

oh, that’s right - there aren’t any, because they’ve never been more than pissing distance from having control of everything.

You toe the exact line that Rush Limbaugh spouts from his drug-addicted face. You are no moderate, and you certainly aren’t a part of the silent majority. The majority is liberal, that’s may be why the media used to lean left, years ago, until the Alzheimer president destroyed all sense of balance and fairness in the media, turning it over to the uber-rich foreigners like Murdoch. You are inexcusably ill-informed, and we’d all be much better off if you were, in fact, silent, instead of coming here to incessantly whine about how the right is mistreated by the truth. Evil? yes, evil. Bombing families to try to kill one man is evil. Leaving American citizens to die in New Orleans is evil. Taking away the Constitutional rights of American citizens is evil. The right has earned that title, and your moaning and pissing about it makes no difference. You’re all cowards, opportunists, and intellectually lazy, and your unthinking, goosestepping support for the man responsible for 9/11 is sickening. And your lying about your moderate wide stance is a joke.

Let us not try to solve this problem by taking care of the banks and investors. Let’s solve it at home.

    RESPONSE BY HOPING FOR CHANGE

While your increase the interest deduction might help most folks financially, it seems to me that the USA somewhat shot itself in the foot with a long-time tax policy that has subsidized the overextension of consumers into buying unaffordable houses. We have a lot of citizens whose purchasing power has now been destroyed due to declining home values because they tapped into second mortgages and home equity loans and taking tax deductions.

The implications of this destroyed home equity purchasing power on the entire economy could be grim. A perception is– that in the past– rising house prices and the prospect of tax deductible interest (fed by a shaky mortgage origination process) drove consumers into believing they had new wealth. It also led to the purchase of what the auto industry called “option creep up” resulting in expensive cars and even for trips to Las Vegas.

It is easy to argue that our long time tax deduction priviledge for homeowner interest expense has encouraged irresponsible purchasing and is causing least a portion of the current credit crisis.

It’s also worth noting that our citizens seem to fully support public policy that encourages home ownership because it leads to stronger neighborhoods and less crime, etc.

But, right now, in some cities like Cleveland where the foreclosure are extreme and will depress housing prices for a long time to come even for the responsible homeowners. This is not the outcome we want. It’s going to get a lot worse too as the Bush/Paulson bailout plan appears to be pretty limited.

From what I can tell, the new Bush/Paulson plan also ain’t quite as good as it might have initially seemed it was. It’s helps only a small sub-set of borrowers in trouble who have relatively low credit scores but are not yet late on payments. The social service agencies who have been helping distressed borrowers claim that it won’t do anything for 90% of their clients. This bailout seems aimed only at upper crust of sub-prime borrowers.

I sure don’t see any easy solution here at all. The nation has to get its grips around a very difficult problem that affects thousands of peoples lives. Bush and the Treasury and the Fed were all late to the game in understanding how the sub-prime mess could cause a national and worldwide liquidity crisis. We can’t undo their bad judgment overnight.

Unfortunately our government has encouraged a lot of unsophisticated folks who have speculated in real estate who bought brand new houses from builders and now have defaulted. The builders and lending industry are big Republican political supporters. Thousands of brand new houses are empty and there are lots of jobs on the line here in the house construction industry.

My feeling is that Bush currently claims he won’t bail out “the speculators” but in the end he will slip something into a bill to help out shaky lenders and this group of greedy flippers just to keep the building industry going. We will see…..

  140. Buckster Says:

The number was for a faith based school in Texas. Which is exactly what Bush wants you to do. Forget about help from the government, call God instead.

Maybe instead you could pray to Creflo Dollar, Benny Hinn, Jerry Falwell, or the other false prophets Bush endorses.
