During the White House press briefing today, Press Secretary Dana Perino attempted to defend President Bush’s lie about when he first learned that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons program.
Recall, Bush originally stated that Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell came to him in August “and said, ‘We have some new information.’ He didn’t tell me what the information was.” But last night, Perino conceded he was told that Iran’s program “may be suspended.”
White House reporters repeatedly confronted Perino about this discrepancy in the press briefing this afternoon. Perino tried to claim that when Bush said he didn’t know what the information was, he actually meant, “he didn’t get any of the details of what — what the information was, in terms of what the actual raw intelligence was.” When reporters pressed her on this, an exasperated Perino said:
OK, look. I can see where you could see that the president could have been more precise in that language. But the president was being truthful.
Watch it:
During the briefing, Perino was also asked about the timeline of when Bush was briefed on the NIE. As ThinkProgress reported earlier this week, The New Yorker’s Seymour Hersh said that Bush spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert about the NIE on Monday, Nov. 26.
CNN’s Ed Henry asked Perino: “How could he brief Olmert on Monday about a report that he found out about on Wednesday?” Perino responded, “I don’t — I will check. I mean, it’s possible that he knew that there was information coming.”
Transcript:
QUESTION: Dana, on Tuesday at his press conference, when the president was asked about when he learned about Iran’s nuclear program being halted, was he being completely candid?
PERINO: Yes, he was. And I talked to you about that last night. I talked to your colleague this morning. And I’ll reiterate it here. If you look at the rest of that sentence, what the president is — the president was clearly told that there was new information that was coming in, but he wasn’t told the details of it. And the president was also told that the intelligence community was going to need to go back and check out to find out if it’s true.
What I said is that McConnell told the president if the new information turns out to be true, what we thought we knew for sure is right: Iran does, in fact, have a covert nuclear weapons program, but it may be suspended. He said that there were many streams of information that were coming in. They could potentially be in conflict. They didn’t have a lot of confidence in the information yet.
QUESTION: But the president said, quote, He didn’t tell me what the information was. But you’re now saying he was told that Iran may have halted its nuclear weapons program and also that there may be a new assessment, right?
PERINO: Right, but he doesn’t — he didn’t get any of the details of what — what the information was, in terms of what the actual raw intelligence was.
QUESTION: But he didn’t say details. he just said, He didn’t tell me what the…
PERINO: OK, look. I can see where you could see that the president could have been more precise in that language. But the president was being truthful.
QUESTION: Dana?
PERINO: Yes?
QUESTION: But listen to what he said. He didn’t tell me what the information was. He did tell me it was going to take a while to analyze. Was the president told that there was a possibility that Iran’s nuclear program could be suspended? That’s what you said he was told.
PERINO: Yes. The president was told that there is new information in the context of raw intelligence, not told the details of what it was. And told that he’s going to have — they’re going to have to go back and do some more checking on it because they didn’t have a high degree of confidence in it and it would — could potentially be in conflict.
QUESTION: But he said he didn’t know what the information even was. I can see the details of it, but…
PERINO: I grant you, he could have been more precise in his language.
But if you look at the follow-up — the following sentences of that quote, he says — I have it right here…
(CROSSTALK)
PERINO: He says that It would take a while to analyze it. And he’s referring to it in terms of what the information was. I think that…
QUESTION: But he said he didn’t know what the information was.
PERINO: He did not know what the specific details were of the raw intelligence that they had found.
[…]
QUESTION: Can you just clarify one more thing? What day was the president actually briefed on the NIE?
PERINO: I don’t know. I don’t know.
QUESTION: Well, because Mr. Hadley left the impression that it was last Wednesday.
PERINO: Oh, on the NIE, specifically?
QUESTION: On the NIE.
PERINO: Yes, last Wednesday.
QUESTION: Last Wednesday? OK. But there have been reports that the president briefed Prime Minister Olmert last week, maybe on Monday.
ERINO: I don’t know.
QUESTION: Did he brief Prime Minister Olmert? And how could he brief Olmert on Monday about a report that he found out about on Wednesday? Can you…
PERINO: I don’t — I will check. I mean, it’s possible that he knew that there was information coming; the intelligence community was checking it out…
QUESTION: (inaudible) just find out about it Wednesday, though, like, that this was out there?
PERINO: No, the president knew — no, think about it. Think about it. The president was told by McConnell that the NIE — he knew an NIE was coming. So he knew that NIE was going to have to be delayed, because they had gotten some new information — I’ll get to you in a second — that the NIE was coming, that they had to check things out; they had to do some more due diligence. And then they would come back to the president. So he knew it was coming eventually

December 6th, 2007 at 1:54 pmEarlier today, a reporter shouted this question to Bush:
Q Iran’s President said the NIE is a victory for Iran. They want an apology from the United States, and compensation, sir. Will you do that? Is the NIE a victory for Iran?
THE PRESIDENT: (Laughter.) You can mark down I chuckled.
So, when you falsely accuse someone of intending to start WWIII, and the entire world discovers you knew you were lying in your accusation, you just chuckle insead of appologizing.
December 6th, 2007 at 1:55 pmI see. The new euphemism for lying is “could have been more precise”. Got it.
Does that mean we will be retiring “taken out of context”, Dana? And by the way, may I say you’re darn cute? I just don’t even care if you lie right to my face!

December 6th, 2007 at 2:02 pmYou can tell how demoralized the right-wing is these days. The trolls don’t even bother to use their “Clinton Did It Tooâ„¢” defense when Bush lies to te American people.
But, now that I think of it, if they ever do revive that old chestnut, we can respond “I can see where you can that Clinton could have been more precise in his language when he testified about a blow job from an intern. But Bill Clinton was being truthful.”
December 6th, 2007 at 2:03 pmIt is really sad that a statement like, “The President Was Being Truthful!” is so blatantly laughable.
We have a right to expect that our elected officials tell us the truth. If they are permitted to lie to us with impunity, then we don’t have a democracy.

Great point, raynman!
December 6th, 2007 at 2:11 pmI must say - I find it interesting that the focus of this story has spun away from the NIE itself and its implications for future relations or dialogue between the U.S. and Iran, and has instead become a three-day story on what Bush knew and what he said about when he said he knew it.
It’s almost as if the administration is perpetuating the relatively unimportant story about presidential backpedalling so the actual message of the NIE is ignored.

December 6th, 2007 at 2:12 pmI love it when she tells the reporter to ‘think about it’ - in reality she is asking the exact opposite. Other expressions such as ‘of course’ he could have been more precise. They were not asking about his diction.

December 6th, 2007 at 2:15 pm#36 - I’m not sure I agree with you, toasterhead.
I don’t think there’s much left open to interpretation in the NIE. It seems pretty straightforward and it undercuts severely the case the administration and the neocons have been amking for a military strike on Iran.
I think the President’s handling of the information and his “lack of precision in language” (okay, lies) ARE the story. It’s the clearest glimpse yet that most of America — the America that doesn’t scour political blogs — has gotten of the true character of the bunch in the White House.
This could be the thing that drives Bush’s approval into the teens, if the MSM does its job.

Scotty McLyin’ was indeed the worst liar of the bunch. You’d think his lessons from Ari Fly$h!t would have paid off better. Tony Snowjob actually reveled in his job of telling earthshattering lies to people who knew he was lying. He couldn’t have worked for Fox all those years without enjoying it. Ms. Perino is clearly not up to the job. I think it’s time to stop the pretense and install Limbaugh, Hannety, or O’liely as Press Secretary. At least they would have the sense to cut the mics and storm out when the “going gets tough”.
December 6th, 2007 at 2:23 pmDana will go with ari and scotty to prison for treason in time of war. It is good of her to come and lie to the people a second day. Can you imagine lying to the people you are supposed to take a constitutional oath to protect?

December 6th, 2007 at 2:28 pmI really think now that NIE points to a reality that the neoCONS did not want to face. Of course, in their bizarro, twisted world they inhabit they see and state the opposite. The neoCONS are a desperate bunch. They desperately need to create another 9/11. They desperately need to create a Provocation and place the blame squarely on Iran. A lot can happen in a years time. As we slowly slide from a free society, we the sheeple will clamor for safety as our civil liberties are stripped.
December 6th, 2007 at 2:28 pmI don’t think there’s much left open to interpretation in the NIE. It seems pretty straightforward and it undercuts severely the case the administration and the neocons have been amking for a military strike on Iran.
True - I agree with you there, it’s pretty straightforward. But the important question for me is “now what?” What are the next steps? Do we open dialogue with Iran now that we know they don’t have a nuclear weapons program? Do we dialogue with them on helping stabilize Iraq? Do we bring them in to the Middle East peace/photo-op process? To me, those are far more important questions I’m not seeing discussed in the media.
I think the President’s handling of the information and his “lack of precision in language†(okay, lies) ARE the story. It’s the clearest glimpse yet that most of America — the America that doesn’t scour political blogs — has gotten of the true character of the bunch in the White House.

No Difference 14
(vol.)/Unsure
Or maybe…
“Based on what you have heard or read about the surge of U.S. troops in Iraq that began earlier this year, do you think the increase in the number of U.S. troops in Iraq is making the situation there better, not making much difference, or is it making the situation there worse?” Options rotated. N=502, MoE ± 5 (Form A).
Better 40
Not Much Difference 39
Worse 20
Unsure 1
So if you take the people who think it isn’t making a difference or making it worse, that’s 59%. Tell you what, you can add the 1 % unsure to your team, jackass.
And another…
“In general, how would you say things are going for the U.S. in Iraq: very well, moderately well, moderately badly, or very badly?” Options rotated. N=504, MoE ± 5 (Form B).
Very Well 8
Moderately Well 35
Moderately Badly 43
VeryBadly 13
Unsure 1
Add up the very and moderately wells = 43%
And the very and moderately badly = 56%
Your point was???
December 6th, 2007 at 3:11 pmPolls now show that support for the war is up to 40%

Warmongers and supporters of the worst president in history are in the minority. Congrats, you should be proud.
Are you going to retort with Faux’s ratings next?

As a Republiscum I guess that’s pretty embarassing for you. Your obstructionist representatives have seen to it that no legislation will pass that could benefit the American public. Bravo and congrats, Cold.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:12 pmSince I first saw video clips of Perino she has made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I had trouble finding the one word to properly describe her until I saw the clip above, and then it came to me.

December 6th, 2007 at 3:19 pmWe’re absolutely missing the followup question for those who disapprove of the Congress’ job performance.
Do you disapprove because they haven’t impeached the assclowns in charge of the Executive Branch?
December 6th, 2007 at 3:20 pmHe’s the one that attempted to use the gallup poll data. Too bad for him he just spewed out a slanted cherry picking of the data by one of the Bush Faithful. Cold Hard Left has been left cold and hard.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:20 pmWow. CHL is back on the “Democrat congress approval” hobbyhorse?
I’m really embarrassed for our trolls. I mean, I know their president hasn’t given ‘em much to work with, but still, I expected better than this.

I think you’re half-right, Dr. Matt. If Chimpy were eating aborted kittens on the WH lawn, CHL wouldn’t exactly defend his president; all he would do is resurrect the lie about Nancy Pelosi pushing legislation that benefited Starkist, and he’d leave it at that.
Like I said — it’s like they’re not even trying anymore.

December 6th, 2007 at 3:27 pmBush said “In August, I think it was John — Mike McConnell came in and said, We have some new information. …”
Could it be that John Negroponte had told Bush in January 2007 as the NIE neared completion what it would say? Negroponte resigned as DNI on January 5, 2007.
Rep. Jane Harmon said that the NIE was started before September 26, 2006.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:31 pm#52 I think they are both important stories. It is very important to see how the administration uses this information. If what is going on now is any indication, they really don’t intend to stand down the rhetoric and negotiate.
It is also essential to know the whole back story. Ok if the president was told some new information was made available in August, did he ask about it? If not why not? If not why did his rhetoric change in early August? Was this information just developed this summer? What about the stories that the information has been available and confirmed for 12 - 18 months and that the administration has tried for that long to quash the story? Why the conflicting stories? He learned about it last week…August…He learned there might be something coming in August, he learned a year ago…etc… Regardless of who the president is and regardless of what the issue is it all smacks of either being a cover up, being an incompetent or once again trying to massage the facts to support the unsupportable.
It should really bother people of all political stripes just how hard they are spinning this and how dicey they are parsing it. Unless of course regardless of your political leanings you simply wanted another war. Then of course all of this is a nuisance.
#56 it all goes back to who was writing the NIE and were they wrong or right back then. The president was politically still fairly strong back then and the VP could get any report written any way he wanted it written. Heck look how badly his direction mangled the Iraq NIE. But to toss it right back at you, apparently the August 2001 NIE was not important or specific enough to act on, but the 2002 Iraq NIE was as was the 2005 NIE. Right there the administration is three for three on getting it wrong. But I will assume that you are one of those clamoring for war with Iran and more than willing to sacrifice integrity for battle…as long as others fight it for you.
#70 you need to look beyond the numbers. Congress numbers are low, they almost always are. However the reason congress polls low is for not carrying out the will of the people. Why? Because one party’s only aim this congress is to obstruct and impede at every turn. And when they don’t succeed Bush will veto. Their goal is to essentially make congress not pass any meaningful legislation and then blame the dems for it all, even as republicans filibuster at a record rate, or pull crap like Specter did with the contempt block. Of course people who take the time to read and follow these things know where the real problems lay…squarely on the back of the guys with the bloody red R next to their names.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:35 pmSupport for liars: 25% and holding
December 6th, 2007 at 3:35 pmSupport for Poddleboarding CHL: 95%
CHL - You mean you totally approve of whatever Bush does just because he is a Republican? You can’t disassociate Bush from the party?
December 6th, 2007 at 3:40 pmMany of us are disappointed in the accomplishments of Congress even tho odds and votes are stacked against them. And coming out with a less than 5 days work week next year really aggravates the hell out of me. Wish I could make $167,000 a year for a 2-3 work week.
#118 I mean 2-3 day work week..
December 6th, 2007 at 3:41 pmMo2 - I wondered about that as well. Seemed strange John N would leave so soon. Just wasn’t telling Bush/Cheney what they wanted to hear. Adios

December 6th, 2007 at 3:45 pmSeverus: Seymour Hersch wrote about this NIE report one year ago. Does that mean that he is more on the inside track with our intel agencies than Bush & Cheney? Or maybe they’ll claim that he has psychic powers? Either way - knowing or not knowing, this white house gang of criminals are, as they say, cooked.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:46 pmPoodleboarding? Does it hurt the poodle?
December 6th, 2007 at 3:46 pmSeverus: The entire country knows how Bush Co does business and they’re not buying it any more. Bush and Cheney are both impotent lameducks. Liars, too.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:48 pmI think Hersch’s article provides irrefutable evidence that this NIE report was completed AT LEAST one year ago and that Bush and Cheney obstructed it’s release so they could trump up the case for another war based on lies rather than legitimate intelligence. This time, though, they got nailed right in the act and it may cost them their rep as well as jail time.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:49 pmMaybe it’s time for them to experiment with those “non-torture torture techniques” they love to defend so much - like waterboarding?
December 6th, 2007 at 3:50 pmPoodleboarding for Darth; Pussyboarding for Chimpy.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:51 pmOn the new thread, Cheney’s coming unglued. He now has the “I can’t remember disease”, too. Let’s evict them all and send them to the funny farm.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:52 pmLie? Coldhardsalami? Google the article yourself and you will find that Sy Hersch wrote about this very same intel report over one year ago.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:53 pmBeep! Thanks for playing, moron!
Besides, troll, I wouldn’t want to repeat the lie so often that I become a Republican now, would I? You are a joke.
December 6th, 2007 at 3:54 pm127 - now we get to the nut of it - chl is a bona fide authoratarian fascist type, who actually wants to live in a police state, likely because he wants to get his rocks off seeing his favorite minorities being abused and oppressed
i wondered when some splinter-faction of particularly crazed righties would take up the call that Bush just looks bad because “he’s not conservative enough”, and now it’s happened.
don’t expect it to make a lot of waves though - it makes about asa much sense as someone saying Samuel L. Jackson wasn’t “black enough” to star in Pulp Fiction.

Uh-oh… I hope the Trollmasters don’t find out that CHL used non-approved language.
The only approved usage is “DemoCRAT controlled Congress” CHL. You made a mistake and put the “ic” on the end of “democrat”. Naughty naughty.
December 6th, 2007 at 4:05 pmSheesh. I go away for an hour and when I come back CHL has taken another severe pounding, but he just won’t give up.
I think the “40% support the war” representation is misleading. We would have to see the precise questions to determine what this might really mean. But I guarantee that a good number of those people want the war to end, and they sure aren’t gonna “support the war” until November, 2008. You see, CHL, the more the Bush administration convinces people that the war is going well, the higher expectations are raised that the war will be brought to an end. And when it drags on for another year? What then?
December 6th, 2007 at 4:06 pmCelebrating 34% approval? Pathetic. Especially given that this is highest number CHL could find anywhere.
December 6th, 2007 at 4:09 pmSounds great…but no one cares and our Military and the Iraqis are paying in blood everyday while the American people stay apathetic and the congress continues to ignore the transgressions of this administration. While everyone waits out their time hoping that the 2008 election will fix the problems (like they waited for the 2006 elections), MORE PEOPLE ARE DYING!
December 6th, 2007 at 4:09 pmBUSHIT not a bus hit. They smell different.
December 6th, 2007 at 4:11 pmThere’s a funny thing about “approval ratings” for Congress. They are a reflection of popular opinion about the body as a whole. However, Senators and Representatives are elected, as individuals, on a State by State basis.
My local paper ran a poll that says our Democratic Senator has a very good approval rating while our Republican Senator is a lame duck. I haven’t seen any polls to suggest this is a unique situation.
Historically, a President’s approval rating is a more accurate indicator of the relative popularity of the two parties. I don’t think any, rational, person believes the Dems aren’t going to achieve a “super-majority”. Whether, or not, that’s a good thing will take time to decide. Though I think it’s necessary.
December 6th, 2007 at 4:11 pmCheese is many times more popular than the war and congress. Pickles have proven to kill, every single person who ate a pickle in 1870 is now dead. Numbers alone don’t prove anything. Evidence, facts and guidance from honorable men/women is what is needed.
The lowest of all numbers are the approval ratings of the republicans in congress.
CHL, have a pickle.

December 6th, 2007 at 4:33 pmSo CHL Bush is not conservative enough for you and you do not approve of him, or rather you are not in the group that approves of him. Please do tell us one thing the president has done that you don’t support? You seem to support him every single time you post. You seem to be marching in lock step. I would imagine that if you are not in the group that approves of his performance that at some point in time you might say something you guys are wrong, Bush needs to go further… But all you do is support support support…Where is the single word of criticism you might have written which would back up your claim that you are not a Bush supporter? My guess is that it does not exist.
