‘Banished’ State Dept. official still overseeing embassy in Iraq.

A “State Department project manager banished from Iraq by the U.S. ambassador and under scrutiny by the Justice Department continues to oversee the construction of the much-delayed new American embassy in Baghdad from nearby Kuwait,” State Department officials disclosed yesterday.

  2. Menehune says:

You’re fired…now can you start on Monday?

  3. MapleStreet says:

To jump over the obvious comments about the corruption in the WH, and go to a very conservative position that makes sense in this case – a position that even the wingnuts should agree with:

If the guy is unreliable, it is plain STUPID to give him access to sensitive data on the construction of our facilities in a war zone. This is a security breech.

  4. barfly says:

    From the article:

“New details were made public a month later during a congressional hearing, in which it became known that the State Department’s inspector general, Howard Krongard, had met personally with Golden and French despite warnings from his staff that such a personal meeting would “taint the investigation,” according to a congressional report.”

Good old Cookie Krongard, he does his best to cover the incompetence, but in the Bush administration, it’s too little too late.

  5. raynman says:

This would be equivalent to having a deposed and shamed former FEMA Director still drawing money as a consultant charged with evaluating his own failures…

    what??

    Michael Brown??? Katrina??? consultant??

    oh

    nevermind

  6. Peter C says:

When corrupt people report to criminals, why would we think we could remove the underlings while leaving their bosses in place?

The stark truth: Nothing will change in Iraq until we have a change in administration. The fastest way to end the war is through impeachment.

  7. missmolly says:

Hmmm…this administration doesn’t really fire people, they just pretend to?

    W/ a raise, of course.

And don’t forget to pick up your medal on the way out.

Yup, just like they pretend to win elections, win wars, follow laws, respect rights, be fiscally responsible, protect the weak, help the poor, care about the planet… you get the picture (wait ’till ya get the bill…).

  12. Lefty Patriot says:

If he/she was banished for political beliefs, but still is the best choice for supervising construction projects, what is the problem here?

Prior to judgement, there needs to be more information made available.

    Comment by O. Bigfoot — December 7, 2007 @ 10:37 am

He/she is not the best person for the job. Bush has never hired the best person for the job, not once.

  13. Lefty Patriot says:

“Construction and safety problems have plagued the Baghdad embassy, originally scheduled to open in September. Kennedy and other top department officials have declined to provide a firm date for when it will be ready to house nearly 1,000 U.S. diplomats and staff.

Kuwaiti-based First Kuwaiti General Trading and Contracting Co. is constructing the embassy, which will be the largest American embassy in the world once it’s completed.

Department officials defended the decision to leave Golden in place, saying it was necessary to provide continuity on the project. The department is working to overcome construction flaws that range from questions about the strength of blast walls to a fire-suppression system that failed inspection.

U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker banished Golden from Iraq after an incident last May in which a mortar round damaged a wall at the new embassy that was supposed to be blast resistant. Golden, along with First Kuwaiti, attempted to repair the damage before an investigation could be conducted, U.S. officials said.”

so you see, bigfoot, your ignorance is once again brought into sharp relief. Your supposition that Golden was banished for political stances is dead-wrong, like everything else you post. Your ability to suck up to your political party instead of supporting your country and its troops marks you as a traitor.

I thought I heard the “Ching-ching-ching-a-ling” of Jingle Ballsâ„¢ around here!

  15. Lefty Patriot says:

bigfoot’s hatred of the troops is reflected in the spee with which he sends his wife;s kids, whom he also hates, off to military training, so he can be rid of them. They remind him too much of what a pansy-assed coward he has always been.

  16. justme says:

    raynman,

It would sort of be like if a bunch of staffers pawned themselves off as reporters at a press conference so they could lob softballs, got caught, were publicly fired, and then wound up getting promotions.

    Oh, wait…

  17. Pete Bogs says:

if the idea was to protect the interrogators, why not simply disguise their voices/appearance?

  18. A Patriot Acting says:

    rayman, justme,

Or sort of like rehiring someone who has been undermining our government for decades, whose war plans have been proven disasterous, was given a cushy job with the World Bank only to be disgraced by his lack of ethics. Hey, maybe they could put him in charge of the arms control panel….what?…Paul Wolfowitz HAS been hired for…oh never mind

If you’re not understanding why so many of us are so pissed, then you’re still missing some important piece of the big picture.
