47% of all statistics you read online are made up.

  2. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

But 56% of all readers may or may not believe them.

  3. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

As opposed to the 32% who think the 56% are uninformed.

  4. Fritz Says:

Isn't this close to the same percentage of Americans that also believed that Iraq/Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11? Believed because this criminal administration is so good at lying?

  5. Kane Says:

Considering the recent past, there's something to be said for being in the minority and ahead of the curve.

  6. gah Says:

Maybe we should get rid of the agencies that gather our intelligence and just do it all "American Idol"-style?

  7. Laszlo Panaflex Says:

Was there a follow-up question whether respondents were aware of the new NIE? That would test whether they are simply uninformed, or whether they do not believe the intel.

  8. Frosty Cupcake Says:

Most Americans can't even find the *region* of the world that Iran is in. Or tell you anything about its society, government or history.

Americans know jack about the world.

    A very good question.

  10. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

At the very bottom of the article, in very small print, it says this:

"This telephone survey of 800 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports on December 5-6, 2007. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence."

800 people??? Can this possibly considered meaningful???

  11. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

How many more people vote on "American Idol"?

    This is SAD.

  13. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

And where is this 66% getting their intel from, the Bush Administration? This is a perfect example of why polls should be ignored. There is no way that any "normal" citizen, unconnected to the intelligence community in any way, shape or form, could give a pollster an intelligent, well-informed opinion on whether or not any country has nuclear capabilities or even ambitions. We only know what our government tells us, and our government has been proven to be liars willing to say anything they think they need to get us to support their goals (the true nature of which they keep to themselves.)

I think many Americans are confused about the uranium enrichment for fuel and believe it is actually a weapon program. And it's not like anyone representing the admn is discouraging that notion.

#10: This is great news, and further evidence, that the American people really are smarter than you “progressives” think they are.

Right, because being "smart" means ignoring the best available evidence and continuing to believe one's own distorted version of reality. It's "great news" when the American public believes the Bush administration's lies and obfuscations.

  22. Jim Says:

#21: In reality, the mainstream of America have a pretty good vocabulary, and they know what it means when Iran’s President proclaims death to both Isreal and the United States.

Great. So you should have no problem finding evidence that Iran's President has threatened to destroy Israel and/or the United States.

You also should have no problem finding evidence that, contrary to the 2007 NIE report, Iran has continued to have a nuclear weapons program since 2003. After all, you're sooooooooooo smart.

  23. Badmoodman Says:

I'm pretty sure at least 66% of all Americans have NO idea what the difference is between Iran and Iraq, ya know, besides one letter.

Nah. It's further proof that paranoia has swept the nation. We can thank Bush Co.'s fear mongering for that.

  26. onoclea Says:

Well Bigfoot, their uranium enrichment program is under IAEA supervision. Any product that becomes more enriched than necessary for fuel or disappears will be immediately noticed. This is more a threat to us than those countries which are completely unmonitered in what way?

The Persian Gulf states signal PGCC's strong opposition to any military option against Iran over its nuclear standoff with the West.

"We want the military factor (against Iran's nuclear program) to be eliminated, " said the Secretary General of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) Abdul Rahman al-Attiyah during a Saturday regional security conference in Manama.

Al-Attiyah voiced the Council's support for dialogue as the means to resolve Iran's nuclear case saying that the PGCC favored security and stability in the region.

The Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamed bin Jassem al-Thani called on Washington to engage in dialogue with Tehran to reach a solution over its nuclear dossier.

  51. republicans hate facts Says:

OBigfoot confuses Americans not yet hearing enough reporting from the right wing media, with their BELIEFS. If you ask the same people if they believe we should be attacking Iran if it's shown their nuclear program is only being used for peaceful purposes - you get a VERY DIFFERENT result..

All this poll shows is how the Rightwing Media has helped bush falsely sway the perception in the population. Don't work OBigmouth, that too shall change - just like EVERY OTHER position that the GOP is on the WRONG SIDE of.

You do? Pay attention? Sorry, but there's no 'evidence' of that happening. But your 'projection' of your own lack of skills is an amusing, but typical act of the moronic gop.

There’s alway hope, though. Don’t lose hope!
    Comment by O. Bigfoot — December 8, 2007 @ 6:03 pm

There is always hope, but alas, very little of that hope would apply to YOU! Maybe your children won't be born so brain dead, but based on your 'personal choices', most likely your children will be the spawn of equally stupid people (assuming you're not as impotent physically as you are mentally and emotionally).

  66. republicans hate facts Says:

Ah yes. The good old liberal elitism surfaces again. If you live in the boonies and not in a big city, preferably on the east coast, you live away from civilized people…

ROTFL!!! You do realize what the word 'civilization' means - right?

  67. tombaker Says:

““Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”?

Is that what the Cheerleader Prince when he told NATO "no thanks" post- 9/11?

Is that what he's doing by telling the rest of the World to get bent while he does what he pleases?

None of what's been done even begins to live up to the wisdom of that old proverb.

"Keep you friends at a distance, and your enemies on the other side of town" - there's an apt expression of the Cheerleader Prince's policy.

Considering you probably were raised in a DESPERATE (probably a child of abusive alcoholics is the easy guess based on your 'personality') it's easy to see how you prefer to YELL and assume everyone else is JUST LIKE YOU!!! ROTFL!!

  74. Keith Says:

If you did a survey asking how many galaxies there were and the majority of the American people said there were a thousand----there still would be 100 billion galaxies. People's opinions wouldn't have any effect on how many galaxies there were! Same thing with whether or not Iran has a current nucler weapons program. The people have heard so many countless times what a threat Iran is---they will answer that way. Doesn't mean they are right, BigFoot.

Our intelligence agencies do not lie in that direction. They might say in 1989, for example, that the Soviet Union could take over the world at any minute when the truth was they were falling apart. They do sometimes lie in that direction. But not the other.

  75. barfly Says:

    Two things:

First, Rasmussen is a conservative polling company.

Second, they don't say how the poll was weighted (how many dems polled vs. how many repubs). Until we know this, the poll is suspect.

Really Frank, RHF can't read. You may be able to read, but it's obvious.you can't comprehend the meaning of the words.

  77. JMOHR Says:

I will offer O. Bigfoot an explanation for the low approval rating of Congress. Congress has accomplished little. Part of the failure was the publicly announced strategy of McConnel and the Republican leadership to obstruct any meaningful legislation. The use of the fillabuster in the Senate has reach the highest rate in the history of the Senate. The other reason for the low ratings is the failure of the Democrats in Congress to put an end to the attempted tyrany by the Republicans.

I would suggest that we simply arrest scum like you and have you executed for supporting a criminal regime.

    Greetings RHF.

The problem with average trolls, or even exceptional ones, is that they are incapable of reason. Even when faced with absolute proof, they can't give up their preconceived notions.

Throw in a healthy dose of sadism, and, one is left with a gross caricature of a human, devoid of anything to which one may appeal.

  79. barfly Says:

Looking at the other polls conducted by Rassmussen on this issue, they don't say how the surveys were weighted, either.

    Very suspicious.

  80. Keith Says:

If people hear something enough--like the media has a liberal bias, Perot gave two elections to Clinton, and Republicans are better for security---then it becomes "true" when in reality they are myths. We have had so many decades of Iran being the bogeyman, that people cannot wrap their minds around the idea that they might not be.

How about worrying about Pakistan and Israel and the 26,000 nuclear weapons that really do exist NOW?

  83. transparentgrid Says:

Wait a minute, doesn't this mean that the majority of those polled think that the Bush Administration is either wrong or lying? Is this poll more of an indictment of Bush or indicator of what the man on the street thinks he knows about Iran's nuclear ambitions?

  84. Jason M. Hendler Says:

Unfortunately, this is merely a problem with semantics. Iran could suspend progress in one part of its nuclear weapons program, and still proceed with other aspects.

Bottom line is this - Iran has NOT dismantled its nuclear program, as Libya has done.

  85. Keith Says:

Why must Iran be defenseless in the face of the threat from the US or Israel? Look what happened to Iraq when they did not have a nuclear weapon and at the same time were sitting on top of the world's #2 oil reserves. Iran has the #3 oil reserves.

  86. tombaker Says:

Unfortunately, this is merely a problem with semantics. Iran could suspend progress in one part of its nuclear weapons program, and still proceed with other aspects.
Bottom line is this - Iran has NOT dismantled its nuclear program, as Libya has done.
    Comment by Jason M. Hendler — December 8, 2007 @ 6:44 pm

You mean progress in making fuel for power plants? Speaking of semantics aspergers boy - you ignore the findings of SIXTEEN intelligence agencies based on YOUR IDEA of SEMANTICS? You really are 'tarded - little girl!

  88. MiMiCcs Says:

Sigh. The 18% who believe Iran has halted nuclear weapon development, as opposed to having suspended it temporarily have to ask themselves why they believe that.

If I were Iran, I think it would be crazy to not want to have a nuclear weapon. History shows that those who have nukes do not get invaded by the US.

18% of Americans want to attack Iran. They are obviously not the same 18% ers. How can this be since 66% believe they still want nukes, but only 18% want to attack them.

Because even the critters, most of them anyways, recognize that Iran is not a threat to us, even with nukes. Using nukes against Israel or the US means the destruction of their country. It would be suicide. Now, the supreme leader may not mind giving up a few of his critters, but the idea of becoming radioactive toast is not appealing to him. He already has plenty of young virgins in this life, he does not need paradise.

Last time, Iran is all about Oil. Nukes, terrorism, etc, are just fear bites for the critters. If Iran gets nukes, the only threat to us is we can not steal their oil or force them to sell it to us and not China.

  91. bilbobaggins Says:

Wow, it's scary how easily the sheeple are brainwashed. It's almost like they want to be afraid.

  92. bilbobaggins Says:

This poll would only be indicative of the current situation if they only asked the question of people who were aware of the NIE. If they didn't ask that question and surveyed people who were not aware of the NIE, they were getting a skewed poll since until the NIE the Bush Crime Family had done a pretty good job of lying people into believing that Iran is our next boogy man.

  93. bilbobaggins Says:

Is it really that hard to accept that people might actually WANT those people in power and that they trust them?
    Comment by Frank M

Considering the fact that Bush is polling in the mid twenties, yes it is hard to accept that people want him in power and trust him.

And Wayne had a good point. If people were to educate themselves, not just watch Fox news and listen to 30 second political advertisements, I believe that people would vote in their own best interests, not vote for the prettiest face or the one that promises to do away with abortion or gay marriage. I truly believe that the sheeple are waking up.

I'd rather not flag you, but I honestly can't flag O.Bigfoot and others if I won't flag you for the same behavior. Take this as a friendly warning from another poster. Anyone remember Mohammad Mossadegh? Where it really began with him being ousted by, let's see, BP and others from U.K., the U.S. Gov't.,
the Oil companies and the help of Reza Pahlavi, you know, the Shah of Iran circa: 1953, the oil revenues were about dry up and so he was removed. So, the Shah became the U.S. neocons best friend, his human rights treatment of his people were right up there with Augusto Pinochet, you know, the neocons partners in crime with Kissinger and their roll in running Chile, S.A. It is nowonder that Iran would try to find a bigger stick with all the crap that's been thrown at them. They were lied to just as we have been. Wouldn't you be a little agravated if D. Rumsfield and D. Cheney, with the blessing of R. Reagan, schemed and connived S. Hussein of Iraq into war with Iran (circa: 1982) showering him with the very same WMDs that we recently were scouring the country side of Iraq for evidence thereof? To trust a psyco in the WH that calls you evil and in the same breath say "I don't know of any Jack Abramoff, never heard of him, and yet his conjoined twin, Karl Mengele Rove had a unique arrangement with Mr. Jack, mainly they shared the same secretary, at different times of course. So you keep on listening to Fox News and Rush Limpo and Hannity the Hun, the spirit of Joseph Goebbels will be proud that his life's work continues.

  112. DigDug Says:

After reading through this thread and reading O. Bigfoot's posts I've got just a few points to make about his views:

    1) A poll of american citizens is not evidence of a nuclear weapons program
    2) We can not take any kind of action unless we have evidence. Especially after the WMD fiasco with Iraq
    3) Whether the NIE is proof of Iran halting it's program or not, one thing it certainly is proof of is the fact that we don't know anything about their program if it does exist. Meaning we don't know where to strike to take any of it out
    4) Without knowledge of where any of it is: an attack will achieve nothing
    5) The NIE is also a powerful indication that diplomacy can and may have already worked

  118. curmudgeon Says:

The following quotes represent some divergent points of view offered by some very intelligent people (with one exception). If you are unable to determine who the unintelligent person is, you are likely among the 66% in the survey.

A considered perusal of the following should provide a means of assessing the current state of State.

"The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves, nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe." --Thomas Jefferson, 1816

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be." -- Thomas Jefferson, 1816

“A popular Government without popular information, or the means of acquiring, it is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy, or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.” -- James Madison, 1822

"...There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our overthrow. ... Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing." - Daniel Webster, June 1, 1837

For another point of view, please consider:

"It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion. If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." - Dr. Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945.

"You can fool some of the people all the time, and these are the ones you want to concentrate on" -- George W. Bush, spoken at a Washington Dinner, March 2001

"...the rank and file are usually much more primitive than we imagine. Propaganda must therefore always be essentially simple and repetitious. The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly...it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over." -- Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister.

“See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”- George W. Bush -May 24, 2005

During the December 3, 2007 news conference, George W. Bush stated, in part, "[The report] says Iran had a covert nuclear weapons program. What's to say they couldn't start another covert weapons program?"

Notice that he used the word "had" (which is past tense) not has. So, Bigfoot, are you saying that W is a liar and that most of the United States citizens don't believe him?

  121. Sabyen91 Says:

"Do you have any idea how elitist that sounds like? It’s tantamount to saying “Darn that Middle America. If only they were as sophisticated and well-informed as us east coast liberals, they wouldn’t vote conservative”."

    Comment by Lefty Patriot

It's already starting. Iran will not sell oil in dollars. Pretty soon no oil rich nation will sell to us in dollars. Bush, by his trying to be the "king of the hill" and the biggest bully has done this nation so much harm I'm not sure we will ever recover.

And, please ignore the new trolls flinging their feces on the wall. They are the new breed who have been sent here to post something really outrageous so that Billo and his ilk can point to TP and say "see what these people are saying, they are all traitors". These trolls are transparent to us, but if we give them credence by responding to them, we are falling into their trap.

  125. bbrown8370 Says:

Well, the reason for that, #154, is because they don't want nuclear fuel providers to have full control of whether or not Iran receives electricity. Who are their friends in the world? That can produce nuclear fuel? Russia, China, anyone else? If those two countries (who are having or have had issues with Muslim populations in their countries) decide to embargo, Iran loses electricity. They want to have the technology of enrichment so they can control their own electricity generation. Furthermore, they are making a killing by selling oil right now. Perhaps they want to eliminate oil for domestic power generation in order to free up more to sell.

Regardless, of course Iran wants a nuclear weapon. Remember the axis of evil? Why didn't we go after North Korea, despite them being the most hostile to the US and having the greatest WMD threat? Because they have nuclear weapons (and of course, no oil). Iran does want this deterrent. Still, they are negotiable. They've shown that they will delay getting a nuclear weapon if the west is willing to provide them with other benefits.

  126. John Hair Says:

Well said # 155. Another nugget of info that usually falls through the cracks at places like Fox News is Iran offered assistance to combat the Taliban when we struck at Osama in Afghanistan, they offered to help the U.S. and we slung excrement in their faces.

Corrected translation: Amerca has become a nation of lazy, fearful slobs who have forgotten the meaning of patriotism and freedom. these same idiots are led by sociopaths, who are in turn supported by traitors. Only 1 in 5 Americans has a ny understanding of the danger posed by the corporatocracy, and that 18% includes not a single rightwinger.

Right, because being “smart” means ignoring the best available evidence and continuing to believe one’s own distorted version of reality. It’s “great news” when the American public believes the Bush administration’s lies and obfuscations.

    Comment by Jim — December 8, 2007 @ 5:22 pm

I suppose we should take the latest NIE at face value since we've never received incorrect information from our govt and Iran is such a peace loving nation that never threatens the existence of other nations. No reason for skepticism for the time being. ;)
