#10: This is great news, and further evidence, that the American people really are smarter than you “progressives” think they are.

Right, because being “smart” means ignoring the best available evidence and continuing to believe one’s own distorted version of reality. It’s “great news” when the American public believes the Bush administration’s lies and obfuscations.

Comment by Jim — December 8, 2007 @ 5:22 pm

I suppose we should take the latest NIE at face value since we've never received incorrect information from our govt and Iran is such a peace loving nation that never threatens the existence of other nations. No reason for skepticism for the time being. ;)

Makes me lose respect for Americans, or United Statesers as they should be called. I don't believe most polls and this one is especially hard to believe. BTW this thread is hard to read with all the trolls, please do something about that or this site becomes a chore to read, which is exactly what these right wing freaks want. Don't let them!

The most recent poll at Rassmussen was back in March, and 40% favored military action.

Translation: 18% of Americans are too naive to be in charge of themselves or others.

Comment by DreamCrusher — December 9, 2007 @ 3:15 pm

Corrected translation: Amerca has become a nation of lazy, fearful slobs who have forgotten the meaning of patriotism and freedom. these same idiots are led by sociopaths, who are in turn supported by traitors. Only 1 in 5 Americans has a ny understanding of the danger posed by the corporatocracy, and that 18% includes not a single rightwinger.

Bet you wouldn't say that to the fifty-three percent (53%) of likely voters who want U.S. combat troops out of Iraq by the end of 2008.*

Well said # 155. Another nugget of info that usually falls through the cracks at places like Fox News is Iran offered assistance to combat the Taliban when we struck at Osama in Afghanistan, they offered to help the U.S. and we slung excrement in their faces.

Well, the reason for that, #154, is because they don't want nuclear fuel providers to have full control of whether or not Iran receives electricity. Who are their friends in the world? That can produce nuclear fuel? Russia, China, anyone else? If those two countries (who are having or have had issues with Muslim populations in their countries) decide to embargo, Iran loses electricity. They want to have the technology of enrichment so they can control their own electricity generation. Furthermore, they are making a killing by selling oil right now. Perhaps they want to eliminate oil for domestic power generation in order to free up more to sell.

Regardless, of course Iran wants a nuclear weapon. Remember the axis of evil? Why didn't we go after North Korea, despite them being the most hostile to the US and having the greatest WMD threat? Because they have nuclear weapons (and of course, no oil). Iran does want this deterrent. Still, they are negotiable. They've shown that they will delay getting a nuclear weapon if the west is willing to provide them with other benefits.

addendum: an attack will achieve the destruction of the United States.
The diplomacy that may have worked came from Europe, not the bedwetting fearmongers of the American Taliban in the White House.
Comment by Lefty Patriot

It's already starting. Iran will not sell oil in dollars. Pretty soon no oil rich nation will sell to us in dollars. Bush, by his trying to be the "king of the hill" and the biggest bully has done this nation so much harm I'm not sure we will ever recover.

And, please ignore the new trolls flinging their feces on the wall. They are the new breed who have been sent here to post something really outrageous so that Billo and his ilk can point to TP and say "see what these people are saying, they are all traitors". These trolls are transparent to us, but if we give them credence by responding to them, we are falling into their trap.

Re: Comment #146 --

During the December 3, 2007 news conference, George W. Bush stated, in part, "[The report] says Iran had a covert nuclear weapons program. What's to say they couldn't start another covert weapons program?"

Notice that he used the word "had" (which is past tense) not has. So, Bigfoot, are you saying that W is a liar and that most of the United States citizens don't believe him?

The following quotes represent some divergent points of view offered by some very intelligent people (with one exception). If you are unable to determine who the unintelligent person is, you are likely among the 66% in the survey.

A considered perusal of the following should provide a means of assessing the current state of State.

"The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves, nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe." --Thomas Jefferson, 1816

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be." -- Thomas Jefferson, 1816

“A popular Government without popular information, or the means of acquiring, it is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy, or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.” -- James Madison, 1822

"...There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our overthrow. ... Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing." - Daniel Webster, June 1, 1837

For another point of view, please consider:

"It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion. If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." - Dr. Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945.

"You can fool some of the people all the time, and these are the ones you want to concentrate on" -- George W. Bush, spoken at a Washington Dinner, March 2001

"...the rank and file are usually much more primitive than we imagine. Propaganda must therefore always be essentially simple and repetitious. The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly...it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over." -- Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister.

“See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”- George W. Bush -May 24, 2005

4) Without knowledge of where any of it is: an attack will achieve nothing
5) The NIE is also a powerful indication that diplomacy can and may have already worked

addendum: an attack will achieve the destruction of the United States.

The diplomacy that may have worked came from Europe, not the bedwetting fearmongers of the American Taliban in the White House.
