The Washington Post reports that in Sept. 2002, a bipartisan group of four congressional members — including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) — met to get a “first look” at the the CIA’s harsh interrogation practices:
Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. […]
Pelosi declined to comment directly on her reaction to the classified briefings. But a congressional source familiar with Pelosi’s position on the matter said the California lawmaker did recall discussions about enhanced interrogation. The source said Pelosi recalls that techniques described by the CIA were still in the planning stage — they had been designed and cleared with agency lawyers but not yet put in practice — and acknowledged that Pelosi did not raise objections at the time.
The Post reports the CIA gave about 30 private briefings between 2002-03 on its interrogation practices. Former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Bob Graham (D-FL) said “he has no memory of ever being told about waterboarding or other harsh tactics.” In Feb. 03, Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) filed “an official protest about the interrogation program.”
UPDATE: John Aravosis suggests the story was leaked by the Bush administration to embarrass Pelosi.

Well, this might explain the lack of push to punish the Bush administration for its excesses, if Pelosi, Rockefeller and Harman all witnessed the glories. Notice that they never stood up and said, “I saw it and approved it. We were scared.” No wonder impeachment is off the table.
December 9th, 2007 at 7:05 amAgreed, Svensker. I notice the “Come-To-Jesus” moments for the Spineless Ones always just precede exposure to the public of heinous, unconscionable acts….
One wonders what other warm and fuzzy putridity that Pelosi, Reid, and the Yellow Bunch aren’t talking about that have yet to see the light of day.
Bastards.
December 9th, 2007 at 7:20 amWell that explains the clean table. If true, Nancy must go. She is a criminal too–she could have stood up then and sat silently because she didn’t want to derail her own ambitions.
December 9th, 2007 at 7:29 amA threshold has been breached; the Bush administration, the GOP and the neocons should no longer be given the benefit of the doubt. It was evident years ago but now it is inescapable and undeniable; the Bush administration is inept, corrupt and anti American.
From this point on, every American must question any actions and any information emanating from any member of the Bush administration or any of its fringe support groups. From this point on the administration must be required to produce evidence of its assertions.
In short, any Amerian who accepts administration posturing without question is complicit in the deterioration of our freedom.
December 9th, 2007 at 7:47 amAnd if you can’t believe a CIA briefing, what can you believe?
December 9th, 2007 at 8:23 amThis article seems to have a hidden agenda. While it names several Democrats in the article as having been briefed, it only names one or two Republicans, despite the fact that all these committees were controlled by the Republican majority in 2002 and 2003. I smell a bit of “reporting by White House transcription” going on here.
December 9th, 2007 at 8:25 amWe knew it had to be more than employing illegals at her winery, didn’t we? And this may just be the beginning of the outing of the real reason why Bush can blackmail Pelosi.
December 9th, 2007 at 8:30 amcdhowe: Another Bush propaganda megaphone? Can you just imagine him running around frantically stomping out brush fires every day before they can burn his house of cards to the ground?
At least we can say something positive about the Chimp: He is able to multitask! (sneer*)
December 9th, 2007 at 8:31 amHe’s still not off the hook in the destruction of torture evidence and he’s really on the hook now for lying (again) to the people when he knew the NIE report was saying the opposite.
Frankly, I can’t see how he can govern at this point. He has no credibility, the people of this country abhore him, and he now has at least a dozen impeachable offenses against him.
But, with Pelosi being sidelined by her complicity in some of the wrongdoing, is it any wonder why she immediately announced that “impeachment was not on the table” when she knew beyond a doubt that this was part of the mandate of the midterms. Yes, remember the midterms and what we knew about the Bush Cabal then?? Wow! So much dirt has unraveled since then that one can only wonder what is coming down the pike over the next 12 months!
December 9th, 2007 at 8:34 amAs long as you are here, Kilo, I have a question for you: do you support torture?
December 9th, 2007 at 8:35 amSomeone like Ted Kennedy needs to call for Pelosi to step down as Speaker of the House due to her complicity in this. Does anyone know what the protocol would be once the Speaker is removed?

Nancy PollLoser says it was in the planning stages.
Jane Harman complained and protested at the time.
Only one of these 3 is telling the truth here. Since we know the most plausible is Ms. Harman, I going with her on this.
Bob Graham would be next most credible here. It’s easy to believe that the Botch admin spun this in way that it didn’t sound like torture.
Nancy PollLoser has no cred here. Her answer sounds like a Bushism. Her answer is pure unadulterated bullsh|t!!!
December 9th, 2007 at 8:40 amWhy? They silently support the practice because they know it works??

I support Nancy Pelosi for not giving in to the left fringes of the dem party I belong to. The dem bashing here is just plain stupid.
Pellosi must go? May be, who knows?
But before she goes, Numb Dubia and Schrinking Dick must go!
She is not the one telling lies to the country for years, she didn’t declare war, she didn’t send almost 4,000 kids to their death and some 50,000 to become handicaped, and she is not pushing to bomb Iran based on own stupidity and lunaticism.
What Nixon did was NOTHING compared to what this WH has done so far. It’s now scandal, after scandal, after scandal. Evey two or three days there is a new one. What’s next?
We know who must go. But this gang has power! Lots of power.

December 9th, 2007 at 9:26 amIt has been almost a year since Democrats won the House.
Under Pelosi leadership things did not come to statisfaction by voters who put her as a Speaker.
She talked a lot about…’No blank checks for Bush, voters heard about benchmarks and no more money until withdrawal plan is put’…,all investigations to protect laws and Constitution by the House turned nothing.
She needs to go..
She is an empty dress, Bush and Cheney know it.
She payed every check and then some of what Bush asked for.
She talks, but showing reluctancy and weaknesses.
Another Speaker is needed in the midst of this war, its cost..the deficit issues, the Constitutional isses, and American status in the world.
December 9th, 2007 at 9:28 amSounds like why that attack got supported by a public majority too
Comment by Kilo — December 9, 2007 @ 9:17 am
Kilo…2 out of 3 Americans NOW believe invading Iraq was a mistake, and want our troops out of here. Bush had the steering wheel, and got us stuck in this Quagmire. This is a failure of leadership…the American people trusted him to know what he was doing. Big mistake.
From today’s NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/ 2007/ 12/ 09/ world/ middleeast/ 09kirkuk.html?pagewanted=2&hp
No Iraqi government could ‘give’ Kirkuk to the Kurds and hope to survive, in view of broad popular opposition in Arab Iraq,†said the International Crisis Group, a nonprofit organization that seeks to prevent or resolve deadly conflicts. “The Kirkuk question could, therefore, trigger total deadlock, breakdown and violent conflict, just when the Bush administration hopes its security plan for Baghdad will yield political dividends.â€
December 9th, 2007 at 9:33 amIf Pelosi knew and did not object then we need new leadership in the house. If she knew, she has been parsing answers a little too much.

December 9th, 2007 at 10:00 amI think you should start your own “patriotic party” . Your slogan could be “We are the thirty percenters.”
A curious article coming days before Bush wants another blank check that tends to sound like blackmail. So we have members of a committee sworn to secrecy while the other side is free to leak to the press. And it is unlikely we are being told even a small fraction of the truth about what happened.
December 9th, 2007 at 10:00 amThe Democratic Party is far from implosion - the scenario which is readily apparent these days within the GOP. Their numbers are waning - now some 27% of registered voters. Sadly, by the numbers alone, they have become the “third party”.
Numbers of Indy’s rise weekly. If the Dems play their cards right (and not make Billary the candidate), you will see these swing voters glom onto the Dem Party like a bee to honey. It would behoove the Dems to recognize that there’s a bloc of 36% Independents out there to woo.
The Dems could have a landslide victory in 08 by wooing this bloc of I’s (36%) coupled with their registered voters (37-38%) which would mean taking the White House back by some 73%!!!
December 9th, 2007 at 10:02 am“Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised.”
This is really insidious! It wasn’t just “years later” that the practice of waterboarding was classified as torture. It was torture when the Catholic church used it during the Inquisition and it was torture when we tried and hanged Japanese soldiers for it after WW II.
It - has - always - been - torture! It - is - still - torture!
The writers of this article clearly want us to take from this that we suddenly “decided” that, after a long and glorious history, waterboarding is torture. That’s the “liberal media” for you, right? Bollocks!
The briefing was classified, for Pete’s sake! It would have been a security breach for anyone to come out publicly about this at the time of, or since, the briefing. As for the “congressional source familiar with Pelosi’s position” who claims Ms. Pelosi raised no objections, how much you want to bet that the source is one of the Republicans who was briefed or one of their aides?
December 9th, 2007 at 10:02 amIt’s time for a new party for us patriotic conservatives.
Comment by Frank M
You support a president who has shredded the constitution, who is a deserter in time of war, who has destroyed an economy that was running at top speed when he took over, who ignored warnings of an imminent attack our “the homeland” who has let the mastermind of that attack walk free for seven years, and you call yourself a patriotic conservative? You are neither. You are a coward and a stooge.
December 9th, 2007 at 10:03 amObama’s looking better every day! Besides, he and just a few others have “no blood on their hands” to make excuses for with regard to Iraq & Iran. Billary’s batting two for two now!
Obama recently said: The experience you have in Washington matters little unless you are ready to account for your judgments. Amen to that, Hillary!! First time scammed, shame on you; second time scammed, shame on me. She can claim that Bush lied so the evidence was skewed on the Iraq vote but how on earth can she ever shed the now-glaring facts of the NIE report and how she was lied to again and fell for it again, head over heels?
I think Hillary’s campaign is all but over. The NY driver’s license debacle was coffin nail #1 and her Iran vote, in the face of intel which paints the opposite picture, will be coffin nail #2. Bye Hillary!
December 9th, 2007 at 10:05 amBobwurst: “Wurst” than that; Frank M is a card carrying nazi!
December 9th, 2007 at 10:06 amBesides, with regard to Hillary’s lack of judgment, I would hold her vote on the Iraq war to even be more significant based on that all-important “experience” she claims to have by osmosis (living in the white house).
The fact is that Hillary was perhaps the most informed regarding Iraq due to the ongoing intel of hubby’s administration so, above all the others, Hillary should have had inside information about it all. Don’t past presidents receive a daily intel briefing beyond their presidency?

December 9th, 2007 at 10:30 amThe GOP troll’s typical ‘talking points’ are getting more fictitious and whacked out every day. In actuality, these threads leave nothing to troll imagination since Bush & Co. suffer from “hoof & (in) mouth disease” thereby making it virtually impossible to defend anything they’re doing. That is, unless one is psychologically compromised, as we know our resident roll happens to be.

December 9th, 2007 at 4:41 pmdixie blood– expert on proper”progressive commenting”– I’ll be sure and mold my speech to fit your lofty standards sweety. Meanwhile, please read the update to this thread, you might learn something.
December 9th, 2007 at 4:42 pmThere’s an excellent comment at FDL:
I don’t defend Pelosi for this. She should have gotten on record as opposed, under protest, whatever.
Recall the times, however; she would have been branded as a traitor if she’s leaked the info and/or been thoroughly Dixie-Chicked. Also, the paucity of info given to the Gang of Four is well noted. They may have been read the outline of the torture novel and told that was all of it.
December 9th, 2007 at 4:55 pm“I’ll be sure and mold my speech to fit your lofty standards sweety”
Comment by whippoorwill — December 9, 2007 @ 4:42 pm

These comments, which I’ve read, came after your attack on ALL PEOPLE WHO WOULD “BASH A DEM”!!!~!!!!!~~~~!~
December 9th, 2007 at 5:26 pmHey Whip Poor Will,
Pick one!
Nancy PollLooser, who doesn’t stand up against torture.
Or
Jane Harman who does.
Just pick one.
You’ve picked the PollLooser all day long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That means you pick TORTURE!!!
December 9th, 2007 at 5:34 pmI’m sorry, I thought you were a man with a hairy chest. Not that I’m a homosexual. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course.
I am not a homosexual and have never been homosexual.
And btw, Yu spellt misogyny wrong. And did read the Aravosis post.
December 9th, 2007 at 5:38 pmyour just plain wrong dixiecrat.
This comment was about dem bashing in a broad sense as stupid politically. For you To stretch that into making a personal attack on you or anybody else is absurd and once again, wingnutty. Sure your not a republican?

you still haven’t said if your repub. if not then a flaming Dixiecrat.
December 9th, 2007 at 6:07 pmYour still wrong DC and you’ll be wrong tomorrow and the next day. All the vulgar comments you make won’t change that. And you can take the hatred you own and shove it up your southern fried smartass.
.
Umm… HELLO?
Since when has torture been legal?
Since when has warrantless EVER been legal?
Pelosi has known about both!
Just HOW is supporting and defending the Constitution of the U.S.A. when she allows the violation of our Rights? If anything, she’s acted in collusion to usurp our most basic and cherished freedoms of this land. And all she’s done is take impeachment off the table.
Dot only does she demonstrate much mental reservation but also, taking impeachment off the table IS a purposeful act of evasion.
RECALL PELOSI

Being afraid of getting “Dixie-chicked” is not a reason for cowardice.
If it were, then that would make the Dixie Chicks wrong in their insistance that the president’s war was wrong and the people who castigated them correct, which they were not!
December 9th, 2007 at 6:45 pmI’d like to see this whole Gang of Four crap investigated. What did THEY know and when did they know it? What were they told or shown and what were WE told? The national security plea is crap, too. It’s always been bu$hler ass-covering.

I am sure you are an ASSH0LE!!
December 9th, 2007 at 6:55 pmThis is too big a deal for the DOJ or congress to investigate themselves, especially since they the subjects to be investigated. There will certainly be a Special Prosecuter’ to get the bottom of this Clusterf##k. All we got now is wild speculation as to what actually happened.
December 9th, 2007 at 6:57 pm112. Max, you’re correct, it’s not a reason. But who the hell knows who threatened whom and with what? This is really nasty business.
Remember years back when across the blogs people pretty much said, “wait till the end, bu$h’ll be like a vicious cornered rat”? Well, it’s here.
If Pelosi had truly been against torture, she’d have registered it w/CIA like Harman. At the very least, done it as political insurance. She probably thought it would never come out. Sucker. So there it is.
December 9th, 2007 at 7:01 pmAh, the words, “Special Prosecutor”!!!! They warm my heart.

Exactly.
See how easy it is to just run at the mouth?
Even my handy paragraph can be ripped apart. Should read, “If I were Pelosi, I would have registered it w/CIA…”
“She probably thought it would never come out” is pure speculation.
Pelosi may be against torture. She may have spoken out. Point is, we don’t know. I want proof. And anyone presenting the smoke-fire argument, please, gaze yonder at Rancid Mcbu$hler.

I can’t help but think back to the Civil Rights struggles…
MLK and the people in the streets were there NOT because they felt doing so was safe, they did so because it was the right thing to do. Many of whom, laid their lives down doing so.
Who does Nancy serve?
When did Nancy stop being the Representative from San Fran?
See, I don’t condone what is going on. And because I don’t condone it, I can not accept excuses from them as to why they didn’t OR haven’t OR won’t act a stopping it. It’s collusion by process. What else would you call it? It’s as if one brother were to go shop lift a few candy bars from the store, come home and share then with the other brother how turns around and tell mom that he gave his brother the money to go buy the candy, not steel it? What if brother #2 only SAID he gave the money. What if brother #2 found out about the crime only AFTER the fact but still insisted he gave him the money first.
This is situation many of our Congresspeople have placed themselves into. Just how are they supporting and defending the Constitution of the U.S.A. WITHOUT mental reservation OR purpose of evasion when they excuse the allowances placed on violating and usurping the Constitution, our Rights, and the law of the land?

you don’t dictate questions to me or anyone else here. You dictate to your own mouse and keyboard only. Your out of control and beyond the line of abuse.
And you don’t get to misquote other commenters to make your points.
December 9th, 2007 at 7:59 pmpathetic.
Indeed. They’re cowards. While the WaPo article about this does not make it look good for Pelosi, at the same time, they’re citing all sorts of anonymous sources. And WaPo’s proven time and again they’re word is not gold. I want proof, with a name attached.
The whole deal is schizophrenic, though. This is what bu$hler has done to all of us.
From the WaPo article:

You started it assh0le!! Just step and answer!!
Torture? PollLooser?
Or
Harman? Female with a spine!! No torture!!
Why do you have a problem with this simple question?
Can’t you find your moral center or must you just rant into the heavens??
I’ve never seen a simple question set someone off like you! I would think that you now need some pills. You know the insult you like to toss around!
Take your pills, right?
Wow, you are unhinged beyond belief!!!
Once again!!
Pick one:
Torture = PollLooser
Or
Harman = Human Rights
Pick one, just one already!!
I’ve enough of your stepping around this issue. Step and up and make a stand and stop attacking me!!!
Make a choice or just STFU!!!!
December 9th, 2007 at 8:12 pmHey Whip Poor Will,
I don’t dictate questions. I ask them.
And you don’t have the spine to respond, except to attack me!!
You must be very proud of you inabilbity to debate!!! You know, like answer questions, respond to attacks with intelligence, that kind’o sh|t!
December 9th, 2007 at 8:16 pmdc
attack you, That’s funny.
December 9th, 2007 at 8:32 pmstill pathetic! It takes a spine to not be baited by hateful fools like you. And I don’t debate hateful fools with no facts like you. period. by now
So, the United States, who are supposed to be the good guys use torture, and the other side (including insurgents, identified as anyone with brown skin, regardless of age or gender, who happens to get in the way of any armaments fired by U.S. troops or contractors) does not torture.
If the other side was comprised of bad guys, wouldn’t the situation be reversed?
December 9th, 2007 at 10:59 pmHey nitwit curmudgeon!!
What planet are you living on pal??? This isn’t professional wrestling with good guys and bad guys! This is a life and death war with head cutting no moral Muslims trying to EXTERMINATE us, including left nut libs like you. What kind of a pussy coward are you?
You have to fight fire with fire pal. If we have to cut their heads, legs, balls, whatever off we will. WHat kind of pussy are you? WHo cares if we torture these bastards.
Wake up wacko!
