Mukasey ‘undecided’ on whether waterboarding = torture.»

In his first public statements regarding the CIA’s destruction of the torture tapes, Attorney General Michael Mukasey said today he “refused to be rushed into deciding whether he considers waterboarding a form of torture. … Mukasey said he has not yet concluded a review of Justice Department memos to determine whether waterboarding amounts to torture — which would deem it illegal.” During his confirmation hearing, Mukasey refused to call waterboarding torture.

We tried and convicted US soldiers who did this in the Phillipines after the Spanish American War, tried and convicted Japanese of this who did it to our soldiers during WWII. The one GOP candidate who is running for president who has been tortured states it’s torture, the Geneva Convention, to which the US is a signator, defines it as torture. Exactly what is the question here?

  11. JPV Says:

What do you expect from a dual Israeli/American citizen who has no loyalty whatsoever to the United States?

The intent of torture, in this context, isn’t to acquire information but to radicalize the subject.

Both Sayyid Qutb (the founder of modern Islamic Fundamentalism) and Ayman Al-Zawahiri (the true head of Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood) were severely tortured ’till they literally snapped and became radicals.

Why else do you think these nutjobs are so defensive of being allowed to continue torturing Muslims? They NEED to create more enemies in order to keep the “War on Terror” going on into perpetuity.

There is no other logical conclusion.

Idiot, eveyone knows people will talk under torture, but people who know interrogation know what you actually get in actionable intelligenceis garbage. John McCain, he talked, gave them the starting offense of the Packers when they wanted names of people in his squadron. Torture DOES NOT WORK, just because it does on 24 doesn’t make it so in the real world. Anyway, why are you such a fraidy cat regarding Muslims?

20,000 Americans were murdered this year alone.

Why don’t you fear being murdered? Your chances are FAR greater.

You’re not a totally brainwashed moron who concerns himself with what the media tells him to be concerned with… are you?

No need to answer that question… the answer is painfully obvious.

I always find it humorous when so-called Republicans try to paint Democrats as spineless when it comes to national security issues and then use the FEAR of terrorist acts to justify the stripping of our freedoms.

Personally I’d gladly risk security in order to retain my freedoms. Somehow in the bizzaro world we find ourselves living in, that would make me a chicken.

If we arrest a suspected kiddie porn distributor, do we put him in stress positions sensory deprivation until he starts telling us who he sold to? And once they give up this information, how much of our police force should be committed to following up on all these leads? When the drug dealer gives up the name “Exley”, do we have SWAT raid his house in the middle of the night? When the porn distributor gives up the name “Frank M” do we take his children away and put him on the sex offender list?

This description that Kiriakno gives is the reason that I do not believe a word that came out of the alleged terriost mouth after 30 to 35 seconds of waterboarding.

How long did they let him recoup from his physical injuries before the began the process of waterboarding him?

I don’t support her as my candidate but if she is elected I will stand behind her until she betrays my trust. I gave Bush the same benefit of the doubt. I watched the WTC fall on 9/11 from a 1/2 mile away and I believed the president when he said he was going to bring bin Laden to justice. He betrayed us. He stabbed every one in America in the back so he lost my support. I find it amazing that anyone can still support this buffoon, let alone take him at his word when he says “trust me.”

Why is this still being bantered about when it’s against the law in this country and against the law internationally?? It’s a moot point and irrelevant whether Mukasey/stoolie thinks it is or isn’t at this point.

  81. Veritas Says:

#98 In a recent poll of americans, the number of citizens who believe that 911 was an inside job has reached critical mass at this point. With the recent outings of more Bush lies, one has only to do a gut check and see if the gut tells you that Bush is above this kind of behavior. The obvious answer is “absolutely not”.

  82. Nat Says:

#91: You’d have to be a fool not to get scared when you finally take an objective look at the world, see the seething mass of 1 billion muslims and know that the overriding command of their satanic religion is to convert you or to kill you - even at the expense of their own lives.

Then why are you still posting here? Go hide under your bed before they get you.

You are hiding your head in the sand, hoping desperately that you’re right when you think that only a fraction of the muslims are like that and refuse to think evil of their religion (while at the same time you have no qualms to bash Christianity) because it’s not politically correct.

That is nothing but a bunch of bullshit ; is that what your equally crappy religion teaches you , jerkoff ?
To lie in a pathetic attempt to make your useless religion appear superior ?
    What a loser you are…….

  85. Buckie Boy Says:

Why, oh why do humans respond to Frank Moron the vile subhuman scum sucking neanderturd, this cretin is the lowest of the low, and frankly I find it very disturbing that traitors like this are not being rounded up and put in those detention centers…oh, wait that would be when a Dem is president, then Frank the Traitor will not be so happy with torture and those illegal wire taps.

Screw you Frank the Moron, you totally suck.

  86. OptimisticMF Says:

    Frank M,

Part of being American is being brave (as in land of the free, home of the..). Yes, there are lots and lots of Muslims and other brown people, but you know what. I’m not afraid. I bet if you tried, you might even find that some people of other religions can co-exist. Yes, some Muslims hate us, but that doesn’t make me afraid.

What does make me afraid is how easy we have been duped into having a discourse about what constitutes “torture”. We are Americans and I believe we are above this. I will not let fear make me to permit such morally indefensible actions. I would ask no fellow American to compromise themselves either. Torture reduces both the tortured and the torturer.

    Thank about that.

  87. sacopenapa Says:

FRANK M, ANYONE THAT THINKS THAT TORTURE IS JUSTIFYABLE SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO THAT TREATMENT. MUKASEY SHOULD BE WATERBOARDED TOGETHER WITH FAT CHNENNEY AND FAT ROVE!

  88. tombaker Says:

Frank - shouldn’t you be out trying to get a peek at Hotlips in the shower or something? Save your “mission-critical-intelligence” for Colonel Flagg’s next visit. He really wants to hear it.

Scared much? People like you I truly don’t understand. You allow those who do want to kill Americans (I’m not saying there aren’t people out there who do, I work a few blocks from the WTC site) to already win, they want you to live in fear and you dutifully do so. You allow your cowardice, and that is what it is, to cloud your judgement. It is you who sticks your head in the sand and thinks that big tough President Bush will make us safe, it’s not us whose head is in the sand.

One last thing, blanket attacks against 1 billion people, that’s the exact kind of thinking and behavior that Muslim extremists use to demonize the west. You are more like those you hate and fear than you are willing to admit. I’m off to take the subway home, I don’t allow terrorist to dictate how I live my life.

  92. sacopenapa Says:

OptimisticMF, I really like what you said to F.M… the only thing I’ll point out is that muslims do not hate the US. What is happening is the US is invading their land to steal oil. In this process they have killed entire populations of human beings! They lied to do so and the people of these countries know that. Hate for muslims comes into the equasion in order to dehumanize the “enemy”. If the people of US does not see humans on the other side, it is easy to continue with the policy. And yes, I’m absolutely sad to see the subject of torture being discussed as justifyable… Although, the CIA and the US have being use Torture foe decaces now. I tend to agree with Howard Zinn: War is Terror! and people that will change it!

    ha ha

good one there. Clearly taken out of context, but as usual you ignore reality and substitute whatever you need to attempt to get your point across.

As an FYI, I am dim wit and dim wit alone. I don’t have either the time or inclination to blog under multiple names. Just because there are other people who find you equally as annoying as I do, doesn’t mean that they are I.

I’m leaving work. Please feel free to rant on about my boss or my mother or Mukasey….

Do you actually know any muslims? Their children>?

I detest the seething mass of 1 reichwing idiot.

  106. Lefty Patriot Says:

Of course, Frank would never let the truth slow him down. iran is a democracy; their government was elected, unlike ours. I guess Frank’s idea of keeping us safe is 9/11, and frank’s idea of the huge Muslim menace is 19 highjackers. No reality for Frank.

  107. Leftside Annie Says:

The fact that AMERICANS are even having this loathesome discussion is the surest sign of the rot afflicting this nation.

  108. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Little Frankie M: “Don’t tell me you are one of those “9/11 truth” nutters…”

Frankie, I know that in all your Harry Potter stories, the characters call people “nutters,” but here in the real world, we really don’t use that word very often.

But really, little Frankie, do you know the whole truth about the 9-11 attack? Because if you do, you’re the first person I’ve heard of that does.

  113. richg Says:

We tried and convicted US soldiers who did this in the Phillipines after the Spanish American War, tried and convicted Japanese of this who did it to our soldiers during WWII. The one GOP candidate who is running for president who has been tortured states it’s torture, the Geneva Convention, to which the US is a signator, defines it as torture. Exactly what is the question here?

    Comment by Blue Stater — December 11, 2007 @ 4:05 pm

Except that there are specific definitions as who gets protection as “Prisoner of War”, which these people do not qualify for. The Geneva Convention has specific exceptions for guerrillas and terrorists.

Not saying that “torture” is a good thing, but we are worrying about denying sugar for their tea, while they eagerly saw off the heads of their prisoners, recording on videos that are then distributed worldwide.

  114. rattypilgrim Says:

richg–I can just see you doing that little thing with the fingers in the air when you use the word torture. Does that gesture erase all the moral implications and values our nation has professed since its inception? Granted, we have been a work in progress. But is it over? Are the highest ideals, some of which were spelled out by our founders, no longer representational of the goals we as a people are aiming for? I think not. If you weren’t such a scared little man you would understand that you can’t stoop to the baseness of those you abhor and think you are somehow different from them and their actions you condemn. You have to make a choice. Which side are you on? And please, leave your “sugar for their tea” propaganda at the door.

  115. bilbobaggins Says:

I am really getting sick of this. How about we waterboard Mulkasey and then ask him to decide if it is torture or not.

  116. bilbobaggins Says:

Just 35 seconds and we got actionable information.
    Think about that.
    Comment by Frank M

Don’t need to think about it Francine. All we have is the word of the Bushies and we all know how reliable that word is. If they really did get actionable intelligence that thwarted attacks, don’t you think that they would be providing the proof? But, you don’t need proof. All you need is to drink the koolaid and kiss the butt of the nearest Republiscum.

  117. sacopenapa Says:

don’t let them get to you BARTLEBEE! I’m with you when it comes to just discuss the enormous pleblems that aflict the US today. After all, what happens inside the US affects everybody around the globe. When a WAR CRIMINAL, A LIER, A DESERTER, A SCUM LIKE BUSH & Co. take over the US, everybody worry! I sincerely this maddness and lack of accountability does not prevail. For the sake of the entire planet.

    Comment by rattypilgrim — December 11, 2007 @ 9:38 pm

What you missed is the comparison - even waterboarding, which is extremely frightening, is nowhere even close to the “baseness of those you abhor”. Those people are barbaric by comparison to what we do, even at our worst. Compared to their daily practices, even our waterboarding pales to a relatively mild discomfort. By comparison.

And you don’t know me well enough to call me a “scared little man” unless you are simply profiling based on bigoted assumptions about me.
