What you missed is the comparison – even waterboarding, which is extremely frightening, is nowhere even close to the “baseness of those you abhor”. Except that there are specific definitions as who gets protection as “Prisoner of War”, which these people do not qualify for. The Geneva Convention has specific exceptions for guerrillas and terrorists.
