Bush ‘privately’ issues second SCHIP veto.

AP reports that President Bush vetoed SCHIP legislation today, marking the seventh veto of his presidency and his second on SCHIP:

Bush vetoed the bill in private.

In a statement notifying Congress of his decision, Bush said the bill was unacceptable because — like the first one — it allows adults into the program, would cover people in families with incomes above the U.S. median and raises taxes. [...]

Bush urged Congress to extend the program at its current funding level before lawmakers leave Washington for their holiday break.

Dems should be screaming this from the rooftops. there should be a commercial on TV and raido every 20 minutes… full page ads in every major newspaper…

the only way to inform the public of these snakes is to… INFORM THE DAMN PUBLIC!

  3. ralph the wonder llama says:

In private? What’s he got to be ashamed of? I mean, he’s only vetoing help for the poor and most vulnerable Americans…

    oh.

    I see.

  4. zathrus says:

With any luck, the Dem leaders will see the light, and just keep sending this bill back again and again with minor cosmetic (or no) changes and make him veto it. As Nov/08 approaches enough incumbent reps. and sens. will see the light and produce a veto-proof majority. It’s pretty close already.

  5. For Truth says:

Why even bother with a veto? He could just issue a signing statement after approving the measure and be done with it —

it’s not like he hasn’t done that hundreds of times already.

Actually, the way the system is supposed to work would be that Dems wouldn’t have to buy ad time. The news would inform the public. But, you’re probably right. The news will NOT inform the public and Dems will have to buy ad time – next year.

Every ridiculous veto ads content to the ads they will be forced to buy.

Which the Dems will do and Bush will claim he helps the poor. To which the Dems will let him take credit.

Billy… you’re not into anihistamine abuse too, are you? Billy?

  14. ShamRockNRoll says:

#9 Nobody thought he would sign it the second time around, or the third time for that matter. But we should keep sending the bill to the White House over and over again.

a.) Because it is the right thing to do

    &

b.) Because every time this disgrace of a president vetoes healthcare for children it shows the modern republican party for what they really are: coldhearted, heartless, greedy SOBs… and it will only make the distinction between us and them that much clearer come November ‘08

  15. bilbobaggins says:

Actually, the reason why Bush is so dead set against expanding SCHIP is because if is a government run health care program that works very well and is way less expensive to run than private health insurance. I’m sure he would rather just kill SCHIP outright, but he knows that he would not be able to get away with that, so he’s trying to keep from expanding it.

Both SCHIP and Medicare are well run government health care systems that operate much more efficiently than private health care programs. It’s time that we have a single payer system. Immediately enroll every American in either Medicare of SCHIP (depending on age) and tell the health insurance industry to take a hike. Health care should not be a privilege in this country, it should be a right.

  16. Abby says:

It’s professional wrestling, folks and this excitement is part of the game. If this was not election season, the bill would have died in Congress by the usual “skin of it’s teeth” but it’s election time so Bush, not the political Parties, has to play the bad boy.

We have the best government money can buy and every pro-people legislation is designed to fail by just a couple of votes while every pro-corporate, anti-people legislation scrapes through, again, by just a couple of votes.

Or haven’t you been paying attention?

  17. leftcoast says:

SCHIP would make adults in a household of four making 60K eligible for one year of benefits. Benefits would extend to households making 300% over the poverty level. When will this stop? Even as a Dem I see the futility of this.
SCHIP does not address the entire needs of healthcare coverage. The US must eventually go to a Canadian or British system if it is to truly to make it’s way to the 21st century. And please, don’t tell me those two countries see us as a better system. That won’t stand up no matter how you massage it.

  19. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

mandolin: “What made you think he would sign it the second time around?”

Well, there is the fact that congressional Dems made changes to the legislation to address what Bush said were his problems with it. Looks like your cult leader was just lying again, doesn’t it.

  20. leftcoast says:

Congress is not going to address universal healthcare under the current system of bribes.

  21. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

This bill actually helps some human beings, so El Busho Supremo just had to veto it…

  22. leftcoast says:

Oval- it only helps a fraction. You want something done? Demand universal healthcare.

  23. tombaker says:

wow – he didn’t even wait til Friday to sneak it under the press radar – i think he’s embracing his lame duck status.

  24. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

leftcoast: “The US must eventually go to a Canadian or British system if it is to truly to make it’s way to the 21st century.”

The French single-payer system is what we should be looking at. The only way we get something like that is with someone like John Edwards or Kucinish in the Whitehouse and Democratic supermajorities in the House and Senate.

  25. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

leftcoast: “Congress is not going to address universal healthcare under the current system of bribes.”

The only candidate consistently discussing this “current system of bribes” is John Edwards.

  26. leftcoast says:

    Col.- you are so correct!

  27. leftcoast says:

Col.- I know about the French plan. I just don’t like the accent.
But, I have never been able to say correctly; “I would like to go to zeee hotel”

Jesus is way proud of ya, Billy.

  31. nanlichi says:

I have to pay attorneys I work with $300/hour. And they do a lot less than sew up drunks, but they put in their time and know their shit. I don’t begrudge them a dime.

I have a friend who makes well over $5 million per year and has never worked a day in his life and never will.

Seems to me there are a lot of more egregious examples you could get all worked up about. But we all have our hot buttons. Defending Bush is yours, knock yourself out on that windmill.

  32. WaltTheMan says:

Congress should pass a law making the medical care of all citizens of the United States equal to that offered to the members of the three branches of government. If W considers that unfair, medical care for the said members would be terminated via a subsequent law. If that is considered unfair by W, Congress can refuse to fund the program for the the three branches (and Cheney’s branch) of government.

  33. kasinca says:

Just think, that there were actually people stupid enough to vote for this slug and make excuses for the thugs in his crime family. The GOP is made up of the worst this country has to offer. They must be bottom dwelling, knuckle dragging, troglodytes.

Our President, the master craftsman: nail, coffin, nail, coffin, nail, coffin…keep on poundin’ buddy. Come November we can finally lay your party to rest.

  35. Marie says:

And true to its tacit pledge to avoid showing Bush, the slug, as the warmongering, self-centered, partisan jackass, the media has been completely silent on this secret act today.
If the public is not informed about the actions of the liar-in-chief, how will they even know what to write their congressman or their newspapers, or vote?
The corporate media is nearly as responsible as the administration for the abysmal condition of America today.

I’ve done work in children’s hospitals during this time of the year.

When I recall those tiny faces and what they had to endure , I want to head directly to the White House and kick this retarded simian skid mark across the Potomac ; what is it going to take for every American to come to the realization how useless , heartless and brainless this walking pile of fecal matter truly is ?

  37. Doc Rock says:

If Bush won’t pay for kids’ health care, make the Repugs pay for the war if they want to play hardball. No taxes on the rich, no war!

Or I should say you ARE getting squat.

Hard to tell, tom. Portruding brow, stooped posture. NM, it is pretty easy to tell.

  45. Sabyen91 says:

Wow, Bush didn’t make this into one of his famous signing photo-ops. Shocking. Laura should be ashamed of herself.

Unless they’re bilking the system with phony billing…

barfly, his relatives are nurses (saw that in another thread). So they are sub-10 bucks an hour. I don’t actually believe he has nurse relatives.
