“A magazine published by the American Bar Association on Wednesday named former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales its Lawyer of the Year for 2007 — mostly for creating so much controversial news.”
Sad but true. Their advertisers are Black prisons Airlines “When you do not have a choice but to get away” and Charmins new Constitutional Toilet Paper “It is more than a Godamn piece of paper its ass paper.”
I am waiting for FEARX to be the new S&P commodity assigned to the Stock Exchange. If controversy is the litmus then the GOP has the market hands down.
So being really, really bad at something gets you top honors? I guess that makes Bush “the best president everâ€.

Except that having this title bestowed upon you by the ABA Journal isn’t necessarily an honor. It goes to the lawyer who had the most influence on legal news stories for the year — good or bad.
Sort of like the TIME Magazine Person of the Year award.
Uh? A disgraced criminal with what seems to have been no memory at all is the Lawyer of the Year? Well, yeah, and Bush is the peace maker of the year. Same thing, oxymoron anyone?
‘The ABA Journal also picked Attorney General Michael Mukasey — Gonzales’ successor — to be its lawyer of the year for 2008 because he has to deal with the problems left when Gonzales resigned under fire last fall.’
If you read the press release link it really is based solely on being the lawyer most in the news. It is a lot like Time’s Man of the Year
Qualifications for the title were not immediately clear. But the ABA Journal’s picks, which will be published in its January issue, appear to award lawyers who spent a lot of time in the media spotlight.
What planet are the people at ABA on anyway? So being an lying idiot is a good thing? If he was a plumber, he’d been fired. But in some professions, I guess fu_k ups are a good thing. I wouldn’t hire him for a auto lawsuit, even if the evidence was over whelming. He’s find a way to screw it up for me.
This must a joke. Gonzo: Lawyer of the Year? Were the ABA asleep at the wheel? A lawyer took an oath to abide by the law. This moron AG didn’t. He committed perjury.
It’s like a news mag’s “person of the year” award, which is given to the person who generates the most news that year. It has nothing to do with performance.
GONZO IS A WAR CRIMINAL. BEST ONE, SECOND ONE, THIRD ONE, ETC DEPENDS IN WHAT ORDER YOU PLACE BUSH; CHENNEY; RICE; PERLE; WOLFOWITZ, POWELL; BLAIR; RUMSFELD; PERTREUS; GATES; AND ALL THE MEMBERS OF BUSH’S JUNTA, INCLUDING ROVE AND LIBBY! GONZO COMES WITHIM THIS GROUP OF WAR CRIMINALS!
Don’t be silly tombaker. Its ignorant of you to generalize the right as mexican haters. Really ignorant.
The way I see it, Gonzales’ biggest crime was being conservative while hispanic. We all know that the left gets pretty ticked when minorities succeed without needing affirmative action, quotas and other liberal nonsense. Its scary how vicious the left becomes when it goes after conservative minorities.
Tombaker,
I’ve noticed your posts are generally bitter, uninformed and hateful, just like I expect from an extreamist on an extreamist hater site like thinkprogress.
You really should appologize for generalizing about right leaning people all being racist “Mexican haters”. Your statement is outrageous and shows very poor judgement and stunning ignorance on your part.
Now back to my point. Liberals have shown themselves to be like piranhas when it comes to attacking a conservative minority in a position of power. We all saw how Justice Thomas, Secretary of State Dr. Rice, Secretary of State General Powell, Attorney General Gonzales and others were bitterly attacked by the left when they first came on the scene. Clearly the left, that is people like you Tombaker, can’t stand it when minorities succeed without needing any liberal handouts or affirmative action programs. I’ve never understood why the left tends to underestimate minorities and assume that they can’t make it in this horrible, racist country without the assistance of liberalism. Perhaps I’m just not as enlightened as people like you.
Attorney Gonzales played a key role in the government’s wiretapping of American citizens without a court order; and as such he abetted a violation of the time honored right to the attorney-client privilege. As a lawyer I thought that either receiving or making telephone calls to my clients was information protected from the government through the Constitution and state and federal law. Now I cannot be sure because the government can wiretap without justification. For this he deserves ABA Man of the Year? How about Scoundrel of the Year?
Good news. Let’s keep that posterboy for corruption in the news as much as we can.

December 12th, 2007 at 2:13 pmGiven that lawyers are the object of universal loathing, I don’t see a downside to the award at all.

December 12th, 2007 at 2:14 pmWell, Hitler was chosen Time magazine’s Man of the Year (1938)…
December 12th, 2007 at 2:14 pmOMFG! Can we possibly hope that this distinction is like Time’s “Person of the Year”?

December 12th, 2007 at 2:18 pmKind of like Ayatollah Khomeni was Time’s Man of the Year in 1979?
December 12th, 2007 at 2:20 pmI’m with tombaker. Anything that keeps Abu G and his “I can’t recall” song stylings in the public eye is a good thing.
December 12th, 2007 at 2:27 pmYet another reason why we won’t be visiting the good ole’ U.S. of A. anytime in the near future…

I keep thinking of the Peter Gabriel song as “Gonzo’s Theme.”
December 12th, 2007 at 2:36 pmKinda of like naming Hitler ‘Humanitarian of the Year’.

December 12th, 2007 at 3:41 pmThis would be akin to the Military Industrial Complex Times naming Bush, warmonger of the year.

December 12th, 2007 at 8:16 pmIt must be “Lawyer of the Year” as in he had the most impact like Time’s man of the year. No way the bar actually supports this criminal.
