Bush has paved the way for this kind of contempt - it will be the norm unless we start to elect responsible Congresspeople that will hold the individual in check

RE: Thompson is clearly not very concerned about global warming.

No, Thompson is clearly not very concerned with becoming President. IMO he's the Ross Perot of the 21st Century. He's in it just for the attention. The fact that he couldn't make up his mind whether or not he wanted to get in the race, ultimately deciding at the very last minute, should be of concern to voters.

Instead of declaring an NIE that he, not surprisingly, calls "foolish" simply because he doesn't agree with it, he should be telling voters how he would solve the so-called political agenda that is apparently running rampant throughout the CIA. He should be telling us which NIEs he's agreed with over, oh, say the past 10 years, and why those were not considered politically motivated while the others were.

The issue of global warming has been widely discussed for many years, yet here we have a man who could possibly become the next leader of a very powerful nation who is acting like a kid and refusing to answer a very simple question. Take a f-king stand on the issue, or get out of the way. This "I don't know" shit is reminiscent of Dole's "I don't know if smoking causes lung cancer...I'm not a doctor!" declarations from the '96 campaign.

Funny that he quickly picks a side re: the Iran NIE, which our trolls have pointed out as an "estimate" and a "guess," yet Thompson refuses to declare his position on climate change because of the "unanswered questions." Apparently our trolls who are quick to side with the "global warming does not exist" group and who cite evidence brought forth by a group supported by the oil companies, and relatively speaking are a bunch of nobodies, are a hell of a lot more forthcoming than ol' Fred. That's a scary thought.

I’ve been waiting for the arrival of Fred as a legitimate candidate who looks like he is really trying and wasn’t pushed into it. Today’s performance should provide him a surge in the polls. This reminds me of Reagan’s “I’m paying for this microphone.” I love it.

He's put all his eggs in one basket. If he doesn't win Iowa, expect to see him in next season's Law and Order, after the strike is over. Or perhaps he'll go back to being a lobbyist, although there won't be a lot of calls for an old, tired, republican political hack, with dems again in charge of everthing.

A very telling comment, and possibly true. Republicans are interested mainly in "performance." They want actors who seem credible in the role of "tough guy." To heck with substance. Never mind that Thompson knows--and cares--nothing at all about climate change. Maybe it's true, though, that in the vapid world of Republican primaries, this will help Thompson.

"Actually, Fred, “the money of those yet to be born” is not being spent on “entitlements.” It’s being buried into the sands of Iraq and covered with the blood of American Soldiers and innocent Iraqi civilians."

I am pretty sure old Fred is a proponent of Bush's tax cuts. I am thinking he just might BSing everybody about caring about "those yet to be born"

"Do you think merely raising one’s hand denotes an opinion? That’s how you get the teacher’s attention in third grade.

Thompson was merely protesting the idea that only a show of hands was going to be allowed, with no commentary allowed."

Yes, bigfoot, because politicians aren't whores, right? I just think he was too lazy to raise his hand.

thanks for a different point of view alejandro

Personally I like Fred's response - Shows some gumption - I wish she had given him the requested minute to answer the question. One problem with these debates is lack of full answers on the issues. Too much effort to try and catch the candidates in a "gotcha" moment. There is legitimate debate about global warming and its causes, but honest debate is scoffed at, which is unfortunate. Someone said recently that the next president needs a science degree, maybe they will.

Lazy ol' Fred: "It’s the fact that our entitlements are bankrupting the next generation."

Sure Fred. It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that we borrow to spend instead of tax to spend. The entire modern "Republican revolution" has been based on the idea that you borrow money from the rich instead of taxing the rich. And when you borrow the money, you are, by definition, passing off the payment to the next generations.

How in the holy hell are those bad things, and why would anyone fight against them?

You know, I've asked conservatives the same thing on other threads (though not so eloquently as you did), and I never get an answer. I think that their only answer could possibly be is "because liberals think they're good things."

How can a person that wants to be President not answer a simple question? Yes or No and give your honest and authentic answer.

Errr...did you see Bush vs Kerry debate when Bush stays silent?

You don't have to be smarter than a frog in order to be President of the US. Who knows, maybe Thompson gets to the Presidency. Just look who you had for 8 years.
