Recently, the American Bar Association named former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as “Lawyer of the Year” for being the major newsmaker of 2007. Today, the ABA issued a clarification, giving Gonzales a new title: “Newsmaker of the Year“:
The article defined that term as the year’s biggest legal newsmaker, identifying former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as the major newsmaker of 2007. The Journal regrets that we did not make this theme clear.
We appreciate the feedback we’ve received, and we’re acting on it. So that there can be no confusion, the term “Lawyers of the Year” has been changed in the headline and story to “Newsmakers of the Year.” The story is otherwise unchanged from its original version.

I had a feeling this was the case. I don't believe the bar is a big fan of Gonzalez.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:01 pmLOL...It's about damn time..Blessings
December 14th, 2007 at 11:06 pmLOL!
December 14th, 2007 at 11:09 pmFunny, that members of a profession, who's stock in trade is dealing with the exact meaning of verbiage, would make such a STUPID mistake.
Actually not, most of the Lawyers that I've ever dealt with are scatterbrained, alcoholic, coke addicted flakes... it really comes as no surprise.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:12 pmGonzo is so bad that he is besmirching the name lawyer - who would have thought such a thing possible.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:21 pmI believe he actually was lawyer of the year. I just don't recall why.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:28 pmLet me make this perfectly clear. This award is NOT a good thing.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:32 pmRoket, you are right, it is like when Saddam Hussein made times Man of the Year in Time. It isn't a vote of confidence, it is just an acknowledgement of the fact that he had a lot of impact (good or bad...in this case catastrophic).
December 14th, 2007 at 11:37 pmi'll bet cold_hard_left has something interesting to say about this.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:42 pmheres some news alberto ...
December 14th, 2007 at 11:43 pmNO STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS ON WAR CRIMES !
This is a good thing. Gonzo made a mockery of justice; it was unacceptable for him to be named lawyer of the year, even though the ABA said it had to do with his notariety; but this is certainly a more reasonable remedy.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:56 pmTime magazine has named very questionable and dubious people as its person of the year, also due to their fame, not necessarily favorable fame.
Democrat Leadership in BOTH Houses are SELLING US OUT!! Something has to be done to CHECK these renegade traitors, and FAST! They have to go!! Any ideas??
December 15th, 2007 at 12:00 amA THIRD PARTY OR ATLEAST THE THREAT OF ONE ?
December 15th, 2007 at 12:02 amTreason and war crimes just don't rise to the level of a blow job , for Nancy and Harry .
December 15th, 2007 at 12:04 amLOL! Yeah, then Newsmaker of the year will be changed to Trainwrecker of the Year. ABA were complete idiots to name perjurer Fredo as Lawyer of the Year. A complete disgrace to the justice system.
December 15th, 2007 at 12:22 amGonzo is so bad that he is besmirching the name lawyer

Errr, no... no. Lawyers have already done a good job of that themselves.
December 15th, 2007 at 12:31 amIf you remember Hogan's Heroes, maybe Gonzo could be Kommandant of the Month... After all, we are all basically living in a large POW camp, all three hundred mill of us, us US Americans..

Wow, cold hard left is a racist pig? Who would have figured?
December 15th, 2007 at 12:40 am"Errr, no… no. Lawyers have already done a good job of that themselves."
I don't think so. If we had some good lawyers on our side maybe we could impeach Bush.

December 15th, 2007 at 2:39 amWhy don't they just name Gonzales "Permanantly Disbarred Lawyer of the Year"?
December 15th, 2007 at 2:51 amABA people are living in another planet...
December 15th, 2007 at 6:06 amCan I vote for "felon of the year"?

What does "affirmative action" have to do with it?
Oh, yeah, I know, you're just doing your job and throwing out Limbaugh droppings to collect a paycheck. But it is nice to see you throw Gonzales under the bus like that. Your character shines through marvelously. Hint for you: His crime(s) wasn't that he was a 'wetb....' -- oh, right, sorry, 'Hispanic'.
Cheers,
December 15th, 2007 at 6:35 amIt's something isn't it. But I think taking away his license to practice would be far better! Eventually, a special prosecutor is going to get this slug indicted, convicted, and punished. Fredo is of the ilk that waxes and wanes but never, never, has a concrete position on anything. It's his way of staying slippery. And...slippery his is ey!!
December 15th, 2007 at 7:36 amJust change it to "Liar of the Year." To some non-native English speakers, the two words sound very similar anyway.
December 15th, 2007 at 8:34 amlol thank God.
December 15th, 2007 at 8:40 amI actually kinda like that this happened this way. Now:
(a) Gonzalez is (I'm assuming) the only ABA Lawyer of the Year to have his title withdrawn.
(b) not only was it withdrawn, but his nomination was so embarrassing they had to stop giving out that award altogether.
December 15th, 2007 at 8:59 am"Criminal Of The Year" would have been slightly more apropos!
December 15th, 2007 at 9:24 amIn case there are folks here who haven't read this yet- it's still a draft, but you'll get the gist I'm sure re: Gonzo & Co:

Comment by zuch — December 15, 2007 @ 6:35 am
Obviously, what CHL is alluding to is that the affirmative action policies that allowed George W. Bush to attend Yale with substandard academic credentials, that landed him in business positions for which he wasn't qualified and that eventually saw the Republican Party install him in the White House, has had predictably disastrous consquences for the nation and, incidentally, for the Republican Party.
December 15th, 2007 at 11:05 amFrank M, you are hilarious! Keep up the great satire!
December 15th, 2007 at 11:06 amWriting as a lawyer, I welcome the titular change given Gonzales' award.
December 15th, 2007 at 11:17 amAnd Charles Manson was newsmaker of the year a long time ago also.

I take exception to that. My beautiful, articulate, intelligent and compassionate daughter is a lawyer. And, she doesn't drink or do drugs! But, she's the good kind of lawyer. She is going into environmental law.

It's OK. Everybody hates a lawyer until they need one.
December 15th, 2007 at 2:16 pmFrank is there a way to keep this newly laid "groundwork" of Gonzo's, from accidentally being used on American citizens?
December 15th, 2007 at 7:59 pmThanks to him, we are not fighting the war on terror with our hands tied behind our back.
Comment by Frank M — December 15, 2007 @ 11:01 am
Really? Then why are we losing?
December 15th, 2007 at 10:59 pmAnd the "Idiots of the Year Award" goes to...the American Bar Association
December 16th, 2007 at 10:57 pmThe ABA knew what they were doing and knew what it meant, it's just been renamed so other people can understand it.
December 17th, 2007 at 9:14 amThis award is just about as meaningful as the nobel awards.
