I think you need to ask repugs one question. Did our President lie? How can they argue with that one question, because its been proven....I know its not as easy as that, but its a beginning. For me, it is so upsetting that Bush continues to lie...and innocent people die.

Well Southern Man what Bill Clinton answered was that if he had somebody that he was sure had info on a terror act about to happen he would order the torture but it would still be illegal and he would expect to pay the price for his actions. You rethugs always believe somebody else should pay the price for their behavior.

trying to insinuate my love for my kids, and my willingness to die for them is somehow suspect or incomplete is a cheap shot, and a pretty hardcore insult, dixie. think about that for a minute.

given that insinuation, why should i think for even a second, that i (or anyone else here) ought to show you any civility?

Why do these wingnuts think they get to decide whether toture is acceptable? There are LAWS against such things, and the US has been in the forefront of setting such presedence.

<em>After World War II, we convicted several Japanese soldiers for waterboarding American and Allied prisoners of war. At the trial of his captors, then-Lt. Chase J. Nielsen, one of the 1942 Army Air Forces officers who flew in the Doolittle Raid and was captured by the Japanese, testified: "I was given several types of torture. . . . I was given what they call the water cure." He was asked what he felt when the Japanese soldiers poured the water. "Well, I felt more or less like I was drowning," he replied, "just gasping between life and death."

Nielsen's experience was not unique. Nor was the prosecution of his captors. After Japan surrendered, the United States organized and participated in the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, generally called the Tokyo War Crimes Trials. Leading members of Japan's military and government elite were charged, among their many other crimes, with torturing Allied military personnel and civilians. The principal proof upon which their torture convictions were based was conduct that we would now call waterboarding.

Southern Man, there has been no actionable intelligence gathered from torture. Everything that Zubayhda gave up was already known and it was inbetween multiple blatherings that have been recorded as the man is a boarder line nutcase and isn't credible.

You continue to have this or that, yes or no, a or b type questions. Where is the letter of the law in any of that? Where is the upholding of our constitution? Where is Habeaus Corpus?

Polling in this country would elect Homer Simpson over any candidate on either side. Does that make Homer Simpson the most qualified?

Never said we torture just to torture. You are missing the issue that our constitution is being subverted. We live in a democracy and you are willing to give up the right to hold our officals accountable and to the letter of the law.

I'm not.

Give it up SM, it really is a ridiculous scenario. Of course you can contrive a situation where you would justify torture, or murder. I can contrive a scenario wherein you would sacrifice your lovely daughter to save a city. Or sacrifice a city to save a country. These situations make for good stories and TV shows. Hellinabucket says it pretty cleanly in #174.

<em>as long as we live in an imaginary world, we can do whatever we want.

unfortunately for your example (test, whatever you want to call it)
we don’t.

Oh, but he does live in an imaginary world, where he is a macho tough guy who saves the day, while the bad guys cringe in fear of his righteous wrath.

you're dishonest because you deny the truth of the questions i challenged your silly ticking-clock example with.

you won't answer to them, because you know they prove your example is silly.

One too many episodes of 24 in the house of Dixie. Nice how you frame something into a corner (unrealistic as well) and then demand an answer to your loaded question.

You assume you will be given the truth. You also assume that the one's currently being tortured are giving the truth. There is no basis for this other than your belief.

I entirely believe you have unconditional love for your daughter. I don't believe those are the same motives that torture is being used today.

No wait! Here's one!

Ok, ok, ok, a guy gives you a bomb in a suitcase and tells you to set it off or he will set off the other bombs he has hidden all around the country. Your choice, one city, or the whole country, what would you do?

Come on progs, it's a stupid ridiculous scenario, but I am demanding an answer, because my thought process is primitive and one dimensional.

Southern Comfortless.

Ok, ok, ok, a guy gives you a bomb in a suitcase and tells you to set it off or he will set off the other bombs he has hidden all around the country. Your choice, one city, or the whole country, what would you do?

Come on progs, it’s a stupid ridiculous scenario, but I am demanding an answer, because my thought process is primitive and one dimensional.

if all those big, giant IF's all lined up I'd do it in a minute,

even if i was then lied to, failed to catch'em and may daughter died, and i went to prison for what i did.

as long as we live in an imaginary world, we can do whatever we want.

unfortunately for your example (test, whatever you want to call it)
we don't.

Oh Southern Man, contrive much?

Here’s a similar hypothetical. A cab driver, Colin McKenna, shows up at the police station with his wife and two kids and says he witnessed some swarthy little bastards setting a bomb in the stadium and it’s going to go off in two hours during the football game. The darkies told him that if he told anyone they would kill the kids. What to do, what to do???

You try torturing him, but the mick’s a tough one. You have an hour left and Southern Man says, “threaten to kill his kids, he’ll talk.” So Southern Man puts a pistol to the daughter’s ear and tells Colin he’d better start talking, but Colin doesn’t because after all it’s America and we don’t do that sort of thing, right?

But Southern Man says that we have 50,000 Americans in that stadium, we have to get this guy to talk, and pulls the trigger. Then points it at the son’s head. After Southern Man licks the blood off his fingers, he grabs a pencil and starts writing because it worked. Colin is sobbing and holding the pieces of hair in his hands and tells them exactly where the bomb is.
It’s worth it right? Sure cold blooded murder is wrong, but you saved all those people.

But when you get to the stadium and find the bomb, it’s just the guts from an old computer and a note that says “Ha ha ha, fooled you. Brophy High Rules!!”
