Perino: It’s ‘Awkward’ Having ‘Other Channels’ Besides Fox News At White House Parties»

Last night, the White House “threw back-to-back holiday receptions for the news media” with over 500 guests attending. At the “early one” for print and radio journalists, conservative talk radio hosts like Neal Boortz and Hugh Hewitt “dominated the place.”

On Fox and Friends this morning, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said it “was a great party” and that she loves “having everybody there.”

Host Steve Doocy asked if it was “weird” to have “people who appear on other channels, who bash the president all the time” at the party. Perino responded by criticizing the non-Fox News members of the press, saying “it’s a little awkward” and “audacious” for some of them to “ask to be invited”:

DOOCY: [H]ow weird is it to have, Dana, people who appear on other channels, who bash the president all the time, and then, one night a year, they come into the White House, they bring their kids, and they say, Hi, how are you, as if they haven’t been bashing the president all year long?

PERINO: It’s a little awkward. And it was amazing to me, being in charge of taking the requests for invitations this year, how audacious some people are to call and ask to be invited to the president’s Christmas party.

With President Bush’s approval rating at 28 percent, the White House is turning to friendly outlets. Last month, Bush recorded back-to-back interviews for Fox News and the Fox Business Channel, one of which was for “a documentary” that Fox’s Bret Baier is producing.

In 2006, after Vice President Dick Cheney shot a friend in the face while hunting, he agreed to “only” speak to Fox’s Brit Hume though “every news organization was hotly pursuing” interviews. When he travels, Cheney requires that all televisions in his hotel rooms be turned to Fox News.

Earlier this week, Fox’s Shepard Smith reminded us that Fox is Bush’s “network after all.”

I agree, dana. It IS audacious for more or less responsible members of the press to be asked to be treated with respect by this administration.

It’s actually a little bit delusional.

After all, they’re not the guys who keep Bush’s approval rating out of the teens, are they? What right do they have to be invited to te president’s house?

What a shame to wasting it all on pure unadulterated evil. Eva Braun will have a beer with her in Hell, commisserate a little, I’m sure.

Meanwhile, here’s a novel idea: No reporters should ever ask for, nor should one receive, an invitation to go to the White House for an informal function. They should only, always be there to report. This way, something close to objectivitiy twixt the news and their reporting of the White House might finally come back.

Ask the questions that make them JOURNALISTS, the ones they are SUPPOSED TO ASK of their ELECTED OFFICIALS.

Bush may be a TRAITOR, but he still WORKS FOR US, not vice-versa.

People like Bush and Cheney and Perino are TRAITORS to the USA.

    Perino’s husband is “lucky”?

Yup, he probably gets to bvfckver her like Gannon does to Bush.

I couldn’t agree more. In fact, Walter Cronkite has complained about this for years and agrees with you, too.

  33. 2MillionLightYearsToAndromeda Says:

I used to think that Bush administration insiders privately laughed at the hollow propaganda on Fox News, just as we do. But I’m beginning to understand that they actually believe it. They need it like a drug. They need their warped view of reality reinforced all day long. As if they’d disintegrate upon hearing the truth. Like a young Hollywood starlet needs sycophants surrounding her all day telling her she’s beautiful. Like the Wicked Witch of the West. Throw some water on her and she’ll disappear before your eyes. That’s some scary sh*t.

  34. missmolly Says:

Let’s be fair, TP — your headline is misleading. While Ms. Peroxide didn’t handle these questions with a lot of grace, she didn’t actually say what your heading implied she did (that it’s awkward to have other channels besides Fox News at White House parties).

What she said was that it’s “awkward” to have to deal with uninvited people asking to be invited to a party. Which is another matter, and suggests that she might not be the person to be in charge of the guest list.

First, if the party is especially for members of the news media, then representatives from EVERY medium that does political reporting should be invited. If you want to have a party for only Fox News, have it — but be advised that it’s bad PR to show favoritism, even though we all KNOW that Fox News is the teacher’s pet.

Second, once the guest list is set and vetted, any uninvited parties trying to wangle an invitation should be dealt with politely but firmly.

Apparently Perino finds it difficult to manage either of these.

  35. Frosty Cupcake Says:

Why do almost all the Republican women in the news look like trophy wives at the country club?

    It’s weird.

When you’re THE PRESIDENT and you throw a party for the Press, you invite all the people who cover the White House, whether they have criticized you or not.

  37. jpopphan Says:

Heh…. well, let’s encourage them all next year to just boycott it and let Dubya, Dick and Faux News celebrate all by themselves. God knows the rest of us will be busy celebrating the election results and preparing for a Democrat to take power in January 2009.

  38. Bobwurst Says:

    Re 33

Bush isn’t criticized, it’s the decisions he makes. I guess that’s too difficult a concept for you to grasp. Who said they would criticize him at the party? They’re sure going to criticize him now. And bush may be throwing the party, but he’s not footing the bill, we are. as usual.

  39. StratRat Says:

#30: When you throw a party, you’re ot supposed to be criticized by the guests.

    Comment by Frank M

But then their behavior and judgements should be such that no critisism is warranted. It’s their behavior which generates the critisism. They invite it. It would be impolite for us not to call them on it.

Perino responded directly to Doocy’s comment about how weird it was to have people at the White House who have bashed the President by say that “It’s a little awkward.” She then went on to add her impression of critics who asked for invitations.

Also, these events don’t have set guest lists. It is common practice for media figures, or their employers, to call for invitations. That’s how most of the guests get there.

  49. Willy Says:

WHY is this bubblehead in this position? She proves her ineptness on a daily basis!

  52. tarazan Says:

Tradionally and historically, the media main function is to protect the public and the masses from the abuse of government, and exposing that government wrong doing to the public.

But recently, some media establishments are behaving as if they were part of the government.
A big risk to the public is when the media gets in bed with the government.

Fox network is acting as the voice of the government, instead of acting as the voice of the people which Fox supposed to protect.

  54. The Shadow Says:

Her comments prove exactly was the left has been saying for years. That is Fox Noise Channel is a lap dog to this President and the Republicans party. The press Sec. stated that is was weird having people who think for themselves at the Party rather than those who agree with what ever happens regardless. This proves that the President is only the leader of the 32 percent of the people who agree with him. He doesn’t even have a majority in his own party, but yet he’s right about everything.

  55. nwmuse Says:

Its that ‘club mentality’ they practice in all parts of government and the press. If you aren’t on board and part of the club, then you are out.

No wonder they are such dismal failures at diplomacy.

It’s the male ego, some men think having a beautiful woman makes them more manly than other men. Fred Thompson’s two youngsters reinforce this point, showing that a trophy woman can help an old man’s virility.

Then there’s the Larry Craig type who settle for not as pretty to “prove” their not being gay (a beautiful woman might be too obvious by having affairs to satisfy their own needs).

Short: he’s afraid to tell his parents he broke his bedroom window. On his deathbed (Hypothermia/Pneumonia. Very sad.) his little brother asks him why he didn’t tell and, with his last gasp says, “Dad would have killed me”.

If these asses would just tell appropriate authorities what they’ve been up to; the world could continue along it’s un-Merry way. So long as they keep up the stubborn pretense that they’ve done nothing wrong, and don’t need to prove it, nothing substantive can happen.

It’s a race between “showing loyalty” and “retiring to the embrace of family”. We can only hope the desperate survivors can’t juggle things indefinitely. A few “awkward questions” are still our best defense against these guys.

It’s going to take a near miracle to retrieve anything useful out of the current government. And we better find people who are willing to take personal responsibility for screw ups. We don’t need perfection. Just accountability.

OK little Frankietroll. Are you aware of all the documents that W had stacked on pallets (from his term as Gov. in TX) and shipped to his father’s library so they would not be available for the public to examine? And this is just the beginning! It is well known that this is the most secretive administration in history.
John Dean, Nixon’s man, even wrote a book on it called “Worse than Watergate.”

I think we need a poll of lamest troll, I think Frank is a front runner

Spot on Blue Stater! The quality of the trolls coming over from Little Green Footfungus gets weaker and weaker as the desperation gets stronger.

  87. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Our girl Dana is 35 years old. She loves Bush and supports his War in Iraq without question. Why isn’t she in uniform, deployed to Baghdad?

Hey Dana, step down from the WH podium, where you daily hand out your flimsy air-headed version of the news. Go fight the War or shut the hell up.

  88. congcat Says:

Perino should start filling in on the Factor for O’Reilly, you know, when he’s busy fact checking or something.

  89. nikolai Says:

Perino said, “I was in charge of taking the invitations this year.” WOW! Perino is IN CHARGE of taking invitations! Whoa, DUDE! Perino also said(admitted) “There wasn’t a lot of work done where I was.” Gee, NO SHIT, SHERLOCK! WINDOW DRESSING IS
    A L L Y O U A R E, you WORTHLESS TROLLOP

  90. Sabyen91 Says:

“Such a beautiful woman and with a brain, too. A rare combination. Her husband is a lucky guy.”

Don’t intelligent women know what the Cuban Missle Crisis is? You know, that time we were pretty close to being blasted into oblivion? Ferret-face, you have low standards…but I quite understand why.

  91. rockyroad Says:

PERINO: It’s a little awkward. And it was amazing to me, being in charge of taking the requests for invitations this year, how audacious some people are to call and ask to be invited to the president’s Christmas party.

Perino chooses to forget, the White House is the people’s house, not Bush’s. Journalists, no matter how much they antagonize the president, do so on behalf of the people.

(Bush antagonizes the people, do we seek to evict? . . . Not so long as Pelosi is in charge.)

The press represents the people . . . FOX, as a member of the press, does represent a minority . . . but when the White House holds a party for the people . . . we’re paying . . . we expect to be represented. . . . After all . . . It’s our House. . . we are “the people.”

How rude, Perino, that you would call “the people” unwelcome house guests. . .

  92. rockyroad Says:

    “The audicity . . . I feel faint . . . I need some spirits . . . Mr. Hume, could you do me the courtesy? . . . I’ll be in the Lincoln bedroom . . . aaah, you are a dear . . . oh . . . Mr. O’Reilly, Britt always lingers, could you possibly carry me? . . . feeling so faint after all . . . and it is sooo…. far.”

  93. rockyroad Says:

PERINO: “Oh, your hip . . . kind of like Dick’s . . . forgive me, I must have lost my mind to have forgotten . . . you guys have been here since Nixon . . . I can walk, just take the elevator. . . Britt’s bound to rediscover the bar any minute.”

  94. bobka dobbka Says:

“DOOCY: [H]ow weird is it to have, Dana, people who appear on other channels, who bash the president all the time, and then, one night a year, they come into the White House, they bring their kids, and they say, Hi, how are you, as if they haven’t been bashing the president all year long?”

Translation for non-fascists: The Whitehouse is uncomfortable with the truth, the shadow of the truth, and anyone that dares report it.

  95. marlow Says:

I agree, it’s positively scandalous. Remember when the indy media got loose and ORGIED in the Lincoln Bedroom? Had to steam the goddamn carpets and repaint the ceiling!
