White House staff exodus continues.

The Washington Times reports:

President Bush is losing his chief speech writer, William McGurn, and his director of legislative affairs, Candida Wolff, the White House announced this morning.

Mr. McGurn, a former Wall Street Journal columnist, replaced Michael Gerson in January 2005, and will leave after crafting the president’s final State of the Union speech for late January.

Mrs. Wolff joined the president’s staff three years ago after three years in Vice President Dick Cheney’s legislative affairs shop, and will leave by the end of this month.

McGurn and Wolff’s departures come despite White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten telling “senior aides” in September “that if they stayed past Labor Day he would expect them to stay through the remaining 17 months of Mr. Bush’s term.”

should be a really fun year at the whitehouse in 08

Prepare for economic collapse and more scandals

Will the last one out please turn off the lights??

Don’t worry about the President, he’s been in the dark for a long time….

  3. Bobwurst says:

On the other hand, it’s not like having a speech writer has helped any. Maybe he should hire a speech therapist.

    - – “Crafting” is an odd term for writing as many monosyllabic words and “permeating” syllogisms that fumble out of Bush’s lips.

  5. missmolly says:

More departures — must be Friday!

I’m impressed at how everybody listens to Josh Bolten. Maybe Darth Cheney should have given the order, along with whatever blackmail material he has.

Must be the smell of impeachment drifting over from the Capitol driving out the women and weak. What are the odds of Dana hanging around until the end?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, maybe she’ll leave too…… I’m sure H&M has an assistant managers position open somewhere.

  8. Bob says:

He needs some sort of therapist, Bobwurst. Although I think he’s way beyond help.

    Come on Thinkprogress….

    What’s the story here?

Just rats jumping from a sinking ship – Chimpy has only one year left in office. This happens all the time when a President is not up for re-election. Most of these people will be replaced anyway once a new President – Dem or GOP – comes into office.

It would be a story if he had 2 or more years left in his term. Thank God he doesn’t!

  13. Leftside Annie says:

Rats. Giant rats deserting the sinking ship.

  14. patooty says:

It’s mutiny in Bush’s white house! I guess none of these people want the taint of being involved in an impeached administration to be on their record.

  15. patooty says:

….or involvement with this theocratic fascist regime!

  16. patooty says:

Think about it: Would you stay in a white house tained by it’s own criminal activities? Would you continue the association with a white house imploding as it begins impeachment proceedings.

These guys see the handwriting on the wall. Better to have left before the “impeached” description is added to the curriculum vitae.

What Bush’s cronies have realized is that he demands unconditional loyalty but it’s a one way street. He’d throw any one of them under the bus to save his own hide in a new york minute. They’ve mistakenly taken him for a man who would honor reciprocal loyalty but they’ve been wrong.

As his ship continues to sink to the bottom of the black abyss, there will be no one left to console him. I’ve seen the talk in the tabloids regarding his horrendous marriage, too. That and his return to the booze wagon.

  17. patooty says:

Bush’s “stain” is attached to each of the GOP candidates – with some attempting to distance themselves by criticizing him and others like Madame Rudy attaching themselves to his stench even stronger. As the saying goes: once a crim, always a crim and Rudy’s mafia ties and goobas have already tanked his campgain. He doesn’t need his attachment to Chimpy’s hip to tank him even more. That just illustrates the level of idiocy of Giuliani.

  18. patooty says:

The aroma of bush impeachment is filling the air over Washington today and will continue to blossom as the weekend ensues. Soon americans will be dancing in the streets if only to show the rest of the world that “we” are not this group of GOP thugs and criminals and definitely NOT Chimpy. Impeachment hearings will have the effect of elevation of our reputation internationally – which, incidentally, is paramount to a nations’s sense of “national security”.

If Bush really cares about what he’s done to this country and how little respect the people have for him here and internationally, he’ll step down during these impeachment hearings. But, since he doesn’t seem to have a wholesome cell in his body, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Regardless, impeachment on the lips and in the hearts of americans will have it’s own effect and render him and his cadre of criminals finally impotent. It HAS to raise the level of international respect for the people of the US; it certainly can’t get any lower, thanks to Chimpy.

next headline may be: BUSH’S EXODUS! Then we all can celebrate. What a Christmas gift that would be? One thing better would be “BUSH AND CHENEY EXODUS”.

  20. texaslady says:

Can anyone imagine working in this White House ? But guess the groups paying Gonzales and Rove thousands to hear them lie would still think it to be the ideal job.

  21. EvilPoet says:

Ugh. Why the hell are you using the Washington Times as a source?!

More like bloated fleas and ticks jumping from a slowly-cooling corpse, carrying with them the disease of neo-conservatism.

  24. barfly says:

The “ship” is the Bush legacy, and he’s the lame rat who can’t jump overboard. Bush’ll thrash around while the filthy bilgewater of a failed presidency slowly engulfs him, but the parasites will be hitching a ride on whatever floating debris they can reach.

  25. Buckie Boy says:

Don’t count on Bush getting impeached anytime soon. He absolutely deserves it and Cheney does also. But the REPUBLICANS in CONGRESS will never impeach him, Bush could BBQ babies on a spit on the White House lawn and they would do nothing.

I disagree. I think if Bush barbecued babies on a spit on the WH lawn, the senior Repub leadership in the House would break out the potato salad, and the Senators would attack the press for reporting the event.

  27. RUCerious says:

Fitting that his speech writer is named after a yeast infection…

  28. RUCerious says:

Oops, even worse if it’s his director of Legislative affairs.

Has he even had an affair with a legislator?

8 years ago when Bush read the words “Run the Country”

    Mission accomplished. America trashed.

  33. pete says:

Of course, all this time, Georgie thought McGurn was a translator. After all, Georgie can only understand half of his own speeches.

It’s all over but the impeaching!
    It’s gonna be fun!

  35. Jesusinasidecar says:

What? Bush has a speecwriter? Someone he pays to write that stuff? I bet Caitlan would be a great replacement.
