Recently, former Vice President Al Gore — to “rapturous” applause — slammed the Bush administration for being “principally responsible for obstructing progress in Bali” by opposing mandatory greenhouse gas caps.
Yesterday on Fox News, former U.N. ambassador John Bolton criticized Gore, claiming that he is “wrong” on the climate change issue. Bolton claimed that the U.S. was pursuing the right path by refusing to support mandatory limits on climate change, since Canada, Japan, Russia, and China also oppose them:
Well, not unusual for Vice President Gore to be wrong, either, as he is in this case. Of the G8 industralized democracies, four — the United States, Japan, Canada, and Russia — share our view. .. If you look at the developing countries, Brazil, India, and China all oppose these targets as well. So, the notion that this is the fault of the U.S. is wrong.
If anybody’s isolated here, I think it’s the Europeans and Al Gore. … This is a U.N. conference after all, and that’s principally what people like to do — blame us for all the problems.
Watch it:
Bolton is part of the fringe, discredited global warming denial community that claims there is still a debate on the causes of global warming. Just last month, he told the New York Times:
I don’t think the world has a correct temperature. It goes up and it goes down.
In 2005, he “recommended scrapping” over 400 passages from a 38-page U.S. draft prepared for a U.N. climate change summit, even requesting that “respect for nature” be cut from the document.
Bolton’s environmental cluelessness is underscored by his belief that India and China, two of the heaviest greenhouse gas emitters, are a model for the U.S. to follow at Bali. Furthermore, as “the only major industrialized nation to reject the Kyoto treaty, [the U.S.] is widely seen as the outcast of Bali,” noted the LA Times.
Bolton seems to think his ideological penchant for U.S. unilateralism can be used for war in the Middle East as well as climate change.
Will someone please toss a bullet at Boltons pedophile face? Kidding of course....

Actually, I agree with Bolton on this one statement. The planet is a dynamic system and it's gone through many cycles of climate change.
The difference is that all the records we have of these changes demonstrate much more gradual changes than we're seeing now, except in the cases of global catstrophe.
Another critical difference is that we as the dominant life form on the planet are affecting this dynamic system in ways that will likely prove to our disadvantage. But that's down the road, so let's not disturb our economy, which is working so well, right?

This is very true. The audience for Fox is just looking for validation for their confused belief system and certainly not looking for anything that would make them think. We see their confusion right here with trolls like Frank M. who seem to seriously believe that CNN is "progressive". Any network that dares to challenges their preconceptions is, to them, dangerously "left wing". The only information that can pass through their filters is extreme right wing propaganda, and any news agency not spouting such propaganda is "socialist" or "progressive" or "far left".

December 15th, 2007 at 11:37 amFox doesn't debate topics. That would require research, facts, logic and coherence. All they do is refute what is plainly evident to the common man. They refute that waterboarding is torture, that massive deficits hurt the economy, that attacking a country unprovoked and later finding out your attack was based on fake intel is a bad thing and finally they refute every scientist that isn't paid by Big Oil. What morons like Frank don't understand is that Fox doesn't do this for the good of man, they do it because they are nothing more then an extension of the GWB administration. My opinion is that those countries are buying some time in order to invest more on alternatives, which is wrong of course, cause we have to act now.
China just built the greatest hydroelectric in the planet (180,000 MW) and soon will be the largest producer of PV and Solar thermal.
Canada found out recently about its bitumenous sands and thinks it has its future secure if CO2 sequestration techniques are proved to be affordable.
US, Russia and China have (in that order) the largest coal reserves in the planet, which is said to last some 150 years, so they won't be aggresive towards renewables. Brazil just lost the Amazonas when Lula signed that ethanol deal with Bush.
I think US has the largest renewable energy potential due to the annual insolation rates, but they have to be as strong as Germany.

Ha ha ha. Frank is giving a science lesson. How is this relevant to a discussion on global warming? Scientists know how gravity affects objects, how things behave as a result of gravity. Therefore they can predict outcomes on the basis of the effects of gravity. There is consensus on these theories & the proposed outcomes. The same can be said for global warming. The scientific community has reached a similar consensus on the current warming trend, the causes and the most effective way to reduce man's impact on the environment. You would suggest that such a consensus means that this is no longer science. What exactly does that mean? What do scientific theories become in your world once consensus is met? Where is your support to dispute these theories? All you've got is denial.

Since the US was forced by the rest of the world, BOOING THEM in Bali, to abandon their position on climate negotiations, this again proves that Bolton and the lunatic fringe have no clue.
Why isn't the MSM ignoring them like the rest of the WORLD???

Do you mean to go to posts numbers 8, 15, 31, and 59 on this thread and click on the Report Abuse link and there's a chance Frank M will be gone?
December 15th, 2007 at 12:17 pmYeah the same people who trash science for ID absolutely LOVE science when they can manipulate it to keep trashing the earth.
God hates Bolton and Frank.
December 15th, 2007 at 12:17 pm#80 I'm not arguing or debating with him. It's adolescent of me to enjoy poking fun of him I know, but I take myself seriously all work week, and need a break now and then. Am I bad?
December 15th, 2007 at 12:18 pmFrank, the reason you have no place here is that, as I noted earlier, you have demonstrated no interest in discussion, debate, or even sharing well-thought-out, reasonable ideas.
Your every post is simply contrarian, adding nothing to the discussion but a speed bump. There's never a reasonable alternative viewpoint offered from you, just a reactionary push-back against whatever you imagine the Left is going to think.
And when you try to think on your feet -- whew! That's when your limitations really get revealed in sharp relief. No wonder you don't answer very many questions; you don't have any answers. All you have is the blog forum equivalent of a little brother touching his sister until she complains, then saying "I'm not touching you".
THAT's why you add nothing to the forum. As if you care.
December 15th, 2007 at 12:18 pmWhat are Bolton's credentials in declaring that his opinion is correct and scientists around the world, Al Gore, and other nation leaders are wrong?

Comment by Guido OBGYN Lover — December 15, 2007 @ 12:20 pm
yes, I can, Guido, because to those who would strive for such a change, "evolution" is a buzz-word. It doesn't mean the gradual transformation of the gene pool due to natural selection over time, it simply means that we descended from apes. That is a concept they can't accept, so the rest of the theory that leads to that concept is discarded.
They don't trust the facts to lead them to a conclusion. Much like the Bush administration"fixing the facts around teh policy", they start from where they want to end up and work backwards.
Boy, do they work backwards.
December 15th, 2007 at 12:24 pm#93 Perhaps you are not the same species.
It's just a theory of mine, but I think we're evolving into two species
One that believes anything they're told by those they perceive as authority figures
One that is logical and can think for themselves.
But I don't know which will rule the Earth.
If global warming continues at it's current rate, the issue may be moot.
December 15th, 2007 at 12:24 pmNormally I think that people have the right to their own opinion. Unfortunately with global warming, their opinion could quite likely affect my future. I used to say "are you willing to bet the lives of your children and grandchildren on the premise that global warming is a hoax". Unfortunately I am getting to the point where I have to say "Are you willing to bet your future," since it looks like global warming is happening at an alarming rate of speed.

December 15th, 2007 at 12:30 pmOff-topic but really, really funny:
You know Steve King, the Republican Congressman from Iowa who not only introduced a resolution honoring "the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith" last week, but who then went on Faux news and criticized the nine Democrats who voted against it (the resolution passed 372-9) as "secularists" who want to "eradicate Christ from Christmas"?
Well the really funny part about the whole story is that the 372 "Yes" votes didn't include Steve King.
That's right.
December 15th, 2007 at 12:32 pmBolton should spend less time gang-banging with his wife and more time with a clue.
December 15th, 2007 at 12:32 pmnellre: I believe that most of us here have no problem with free speech, as with you; however, if you visit these threads often enough you will see the typical pattern of "thread hijacking" done by this troll. The only time I see him as a true "catalyst" is in the form of thread hijacking - he manages to shift the conversation either to himself directly by pushing people's buttons (one hijacking method) or turns the conversation into a purely hypothetical, non productive waste of everyone's time.
Most of us are proponents of free speech so we recognize that Frank M in his myriad of monikers will heckle us every day. The trick is to not directly engage with a known hijacker, thereby making him rethink his position or leave the thread completely.
No one enjoys being ignored. It's part of the human egoic framework but there is a difference when a troll's intention is not intellectual discourse but, rather, a bona fide attempt to thwart intellectual tete-a-tete.

It's not about ripping politicos apart at all; in fact, when it comes to ripping the daily onslaught of GOP criminals being outed, Fox does nothing of the kind. Conversely, on days when it's obvious that one of their "ilk" is being outed, they intentionally present some inane, ridiculous piece on some celebrity whom no one gives one flying hoot about.
Fox News is absolutely the worst news program, bar none.

It matters to Fox because it is just another attack on Al Gore..and Bolton possesses good credentials for it.

Nancy's fitness report, come late 2008, will probably be positive in terms of House opinion, so I view it as unlikely she'll be replaced before 2010.
Reid, on the other hand, may be ousted early on, as Democrats may want to recognize the shining star in Dick Durbin's full leadership potential.

December 15th, 2007 at 1:02 pm#112 I do lots of comments on lots of boards. When trolls post, the comments are enlivened. I agree that direct debate with a troll is a waste of time... but we tend to come up with more comments and more content when they're present. Otherwise all we're doing is preaching to the choir.
Years ago one could actually get into an honest debate on the Yahoo boards. I miss that a lot. Now the folks that disagree with us with any substance do not have the guts to come forward, or perhaps they don't exist. We're left with trolls.
If we'd all contribute real stuff, links etc. to support each other, without a troll to push it, OK by me. But we don't do that.

Peer reviewed research has uniformly indicate that a focus on reducing carbon emissions will not have the effect that are claimed in the mainstream media. Furthermore, peer reviewed research also disputes the apocalyptic predictions that global warming will kill us all. While I think that Bjorn Lomborgs Cool It might underestimate the effects of global warming, it seems clear that his underestimation is far less egregious than the massive overestimations of people like Gore (who, imo, should not have received a Nobel given the degree of misrepresentations in his climate work).
This organization is called "Think Progress" -- yet on the topic of climate change, you're far from being progressive. Jumping on the emissions reduction bandwagon without reading the peer reviewed research is not only irresponsible, but it's weak and lame. If you want to be progressive, try reading the quality research out there and then pushing a socially responsible agenda. I'm getting sick of the perpetual whining...

December 15th, 2007 at 3:29 pmTwo points worth making:
1)The earth does not, true, have a correct temperature. We, however, do. So does most life.
The earth will survive all this nicely. That's small consolation to the planet's inhabitants.
2)Science never tells you what a thing or a process is. It tells you how it works, how it behaves. We don't know what matter is, or what energy is,or what space or time are. Modern science (with Newton) began when 'natural philosophers' stopped worrying endlessly about those questiions and started to concentrate on how things worked.
December 15th, 2007 at 3:45 pmComment by pbg — December 15, 2007 @ 3:45 pm
The human body temperature does vary, haven't you ever had a chill or a fever. I think normal may be a better word than correct to describe the temperature of 98.6 degrees F.
The interesting thing is that the human body fights back when we go to far astray from 98.6. When we get chilled we shiver, involuntary muscle action that produces heat. A fever is the result of the transfer by the blood of heat from inside our body to the skin where it can move out of the body.
If we exceed certain limits, either higher or lower, we die. The Earth is a living organism like us. I firmly believe it is sick, and, like I would help anyone who was sick, I want to do my part to stop the suffering.
I also believe the Bush is the progenitor of a deadly strain of a disease that threatens all of us. We have a vaccine that will kill of this scurge to mankind called impeachment. Pull em down and bend over George.

How about DOING THE RIGHT THING FIRST YOURSELF and then NEGOTIATING others into doing the same? Instead of WHINING that others aren't doing what you want, so YOU have no obligation to do the right thing like a 6 year old petulant little boy? You wingnuts are CLEARLY the product of POOR PARENTING! GROW UP, CHILD!
December 15th, 2007 at 7:53 pmOh, and kilo, if you think it's ridiculous that third world countries don't have the comply with the same standards as US companies (individuals) do, then perhaps you have a problem with the fact those countries have virtually no environmental and workplace and product safety laws? Why should the US protect our workers and the worlds oceans and waterways if China doesn't - right? That's exactly how STUPID and RIDICULOUS this RANT of yours is! It shows your COMPLETE IGNORANCE of how both domestic and international laws are enacted and under what basis. You my dear child are a fool!
December 15th, 2007 at 7:59 pmWhy would anyone in their right mind waste their time refuting Bolten's belligerent blabber? I would, and making Kilo look like a contrarian ingrate is why.
Al Gore and Europe are Leaders, and were applauded at the conference, and the "American" delegation was mocked, derided, and shamed into flipping their position. Audio and video from the conference make the point un-debatable.
Bolten then, in a shocking demonstration of idiot-logic, perverted that into "the isolation" of Gore and Europe. No scintilla of credibility in the statement. No irony.
Finally, kilo, I have to wonder why we would peg our standards to other, inferior standards practiced overseas. I don't let my yard deteriorate to the point that it matches the crappiest property on the block, simply because those neighbors maintain their property poorly.
We have to watch out for that "soft bigotry of low expectations", don't we?
December 15th, 2007 at 8:12 pmBolton kind of reminds me of Baghdad Bob. I wonder if Bob works for the neo-cons as a PR specialist.
The Rockefeller/Zio-con element in Us/UK/Israel want to use military force as a way to achieve a One World Global fascist state. This is currently in effect. It is about Fear and ruining the image of democracy to get people to accept a harsher form of government that will take away liberty but provide order, a New World Order. The democracy movement in China and Hong Kong is gone. China says thank you. Even Taiwans President talked about declaring Martial Law recently .
The Rothchilds/Europe want to use Global warming to achieve a One World Global Socialist State. The Carbon tax is just a global income tax. Energy consumption growth correlates with national income growth. By limiting the wealth, the capital flows elsewhere.
Our way is to eliminate the wealth of the critters, which we are doing. Business is now exporting our capital to China and increasing their critters wealth. This is working well, so we do not care about Global Warming. Europes elite wants to accelerate their capital exports, but in their own way, which is War on Global Warming/Environment. I kind of like their way better.
December 15th, 2007 at 9:20 pm"Critters"?
That's a new one.
December 15th, 2007 at 9:45 pm"Fox News is for folks who think, and apparently there are plenty..."
ROTFLMFAO!
December 15th, 2007 at 10:51 pmFox News is for folks who think, and apparently there are plenty, considering the massive viewership.
The other two networks are for the sheep.
Comment by O. Bigfoot — December 15, 2007 @ 9:49 pm
FOX has a tiny viership, compared to the networks, and its demographic is very waek in purchasing power. Colmes is not a liberal, he's an actor, a clown. if I or any real liberal were hired to go up against Hannity, he'd be fired in a week. And if FOX were not blocked by so many thoughtful, patriotic households, its numbers wouldn't be so puny comaparitively. To crow about FOX's numbers compared to CNN and MSNBC is to point out the overall weakness of rightwing cable media, all competing with each other for the same small number of idiots and robots, like bigfoot. morons and traitors dominate the demographic of rightwing bullshit cable television, and FOX is the leader of the shitpile. no wonder idiots like bigfoot take so much pride, living in that shitpile themselves.
December 15th, 2007 at 10:57 pmThanks guys. Starting a blog on Left wing lunacy. This thread was a gem. Your combined IQ would be interesting to know. Cheers.
December 15th, 2007 at 11:40 pm"Fox News is for folks who think, and apparently there are plenty considering their viewership, that the Earth is flat and about 8,000 years old."
There, I fixed for ya, Footie. You're welcome.
December 15th, 2007 at 11:40 pm191 - I'm certain it would compare favorably to the avg. iq of the fox news audience at any given time. In fact, I'd make a hefty wager on it.
I'm also certain the internet audience will be beating down your doors, when you reveal your groundbreaking critique. So far, I don't think anyone in the "new media" has tried tackling the eath-shattering contention that "liberals" are, in fact, "moonbats, far on the fringe of "mainstream america"". You are sure to be a hit.
Congratulations on "scooping" everyone with your keen insight and unwavering patriotism.
December 16th, 2007 at 12:10 amIt does not take a smart person to see that Fox interview with Bolton has nothing to do with Global Warming...
He is not a scientist,he is not in the field of environment and research. He has no credentials in the subject he is tackling.
Yes , he has a big mouth...and that's why he was interviewed by Fox.
If Fox is sincere about educating the public, they could have interviewed a researcher, professor,or scientist in this field of Global Warming, regardless whether he agrees with Al Gore or not, for the sake of science and educating the public. The interviewr also has no knowledge of the field either. That's how Fox operates...not to educate, but to inflame...
Fox interest is not educating the public, instead it is to lash at Al Gore..and to support GOP agenda..
December 16th, 2007 at 6:55 amBolton on Global Warming Conference, "If anybody’s delusional here, I think it’s me."
December 16th, 2007 at 11:42 amAdd 98% of the planet's population in your column of the intellectually challenged, anti. Every international agency and every scientist who's paycheck is NOT signed by an oil company. Then again, genius frequently stands alone. That and bone-crushing stupidity.
December 16th, 2007 at 3:51 pmI wouldn't equate evolution and global warming. There is plenty of evidence for evolution and even then the mechanics are not totally understood but to deny evolution means accepting spontaneous generation which is ludicrous. That being said, even evolution should be questioned.
Global warming on the other hand doesn't really qualify as a theory because it has to be disprovable and I see over and over that wording such as "its a closed case" its "undeniable" and anyone that questions it is basically a lunatic or a right wing nutjob.
Michael Crichton, a PHD, who is far from a lunatic and is a pretty intellgent guy, wrote a book called A State of Fear regarding the global warming craze. That is what we are in, a state of fear.
I look at a single graph, Temperature versus CO2 concentration. I'm an engineer. I look at data. The graphs show Temperature increasing first, then CO2 concentrations. When I'm at work looking at data, I look for correlations. Something happens first, then something fails. A guy does maintenance, then the tool fails. I have enough sense to know that the tool failing did not cause the maintenance.
Another issue which seems to be skirted by the wayside is global warming since the ice age. Men were not around burning carbon since the ice age. Yet, no one wonders what happened. How is it that temperature increased over that period without human intervention? Is it possible that the earth is not in thermal equilibrium and this is just part of the warming trend?
On the other hand, back in the Cretaceous, the earth was much warmer with much of the US covered by inland seas. Obviously, this wasn't caused by humans unless you are one of the right wing nutjobs that believes the earth is 10000 years old.
Discounting that humans have caused global warming does not equate to discounting evolution. There are plenty of other factors which can warm the planet. Its an energy balance. The energy from the sun changes. Another theory might be that solar cycles affect the weather. It was just in the 70s, thirty years ago, that climatologists were clammering about the next Ice Age and it was based on climate data. Why are these same climatologists suddenly right?
Pro-Global warmers are emotionally and politically tied up into their theory. Climatologists are linked through money and peer pressure to ignore anything that would disrupt the flow of cash.
Its become a political issue, not a science issue and if you feel you are unwilling to discuss facts and the data and blithely dismiss counter arguments, then aren't you just as guilty as the right wing nut jobs that point at the Bible and say evolution is a sham?
I implore you to look the data which contradicts your prized theory, look at the counter agruments and not be afraid that you might see something that causes your mind to click into gear. Even if you still think Global Warming is true, won't you be a better person for it?
Don't just accept the pundits, the actors amd the politicians/lawyers word for it that a one degree change will cause killer hurricanes just because somoene plugged it into a computer model that couldn't even predict next weeks' weather.
I know most of you are probably pretty ignorant about this since you talk about fact and theories in the same sentence.
In science, there is nothing that is a closed case. Everything is open to question and in my mind, from what I've seen, Global Warming is anything but a slam dunk.
Lastly, what is really sad is that you might be people that care about the environment but want to flush trillions down the drain on this.
Look at things that can be changed. Look at species extinction, preserving the amazon, protecting our water and oceans and yes, even protecting the air from pollution. But don't waste your time with this one-degree change in temperature when you don't even know whether going back to the stone age is going to even make a difference.
