New KBR employee tells of rampant sexual harassment.»

Earlier this week, former Halliburton/KBR employee Jamie Leigh Jones revealed that in 2005 she had been “raped by multiple men at a KBR camp” in Baghdad. This past Friday on Houston’s CBS affiliate KHOU, former KBR employee Linda Lindsey said that, while she didn’t know Jones, the allegations of sexual harassment aren’t surprising:

“If you wanted to get a promotion you didn’t necessarily have to have the qualifications,” remembered Lindsey, a former KBR contractor. “You just needed to be sleeping with the person who was doing the hiring.” […]

In a sworn affidavit for the Jones case, Lindsey said: “I saw rampant sexual harassment and discrimination.” […]

Her affidavit also said: “When anyone would report an incident of abuse or harassment, they would be threatened with a transfer to a more dangerous location.”

More GOP affiliated sexual predators and perverts! KBR/Haliburton is still Cheney’s company despite his protestations to the opposite. At the very least, his pension is directly commensurate with profits; at the worst, he’s still involved financially and lying about it. I believe this “no bid” Haliburton contract violated our laws regarding government contracts and clearly is feathering Darth, The Elder’s nest.

The charges are too serious to ignore. There is credible evidence that the Vice President abused the power of his office, and not only brought us into an unneccesary war but violated the civil liberties and privacy of American citizens. It is the constitutional duty of Congress to hold impeachment hearings.

  27. Citizen_of_Earth Says:

Well, this story covers at least three of the “Fourteen Points of Fascism”:

    2. Disdain for the importance of human rights

The regimes themselves viewed human rights as of little value and a hindrance to realizing the objectives of the ruling elite. Through clever use of propaganda, the population was brought to accept these human rights abuses by marginalizing, even demonizing, those being targeted. When abuse was egregious, the tactic was to use secrecy, denial, and disinformation.

    5. Rampant sexism

Beyond the simple fact that the political elite and the national culture were male-dominated, these regimes inevitably viewed women as second-class citizens. They were adamantly anti-abortion and also homophobic. These attitudes were usually codified in Draconian laws that enjoyed strong support by the orthodox religion of the country, thus lending the regime cover for its abuses.

    9. Power of corporations protected

Although the personal life of ordinary citizens was under strict control, the ability of large corporations to operate in relative freedom was not compromised. The ruling elite saw the corporate structure as a way to not only ensure military production (in developed states), but also as an additional means of social control. Members of the economic elite were often pampered by the political elite to ensure a continued mutuality of interests, especially in the repression of “have-not” citizens.

Contact Congressman Ted Poe, and ask him to launch a full investigation and not to stop until the perps are brought to justice. Jamie Leigh Jones, is his constituent, and deserves our support, no one should have been treated like she was. Read Mr. Poe’s statement to the House here.

    Comment by Frank M

How about charged rather than changed Francine. Why should these people get a free pass and be allowed to violate the law.

We need Congress to pass a law that says that any contractor hired by our government must obey all laws of the US and if they violate those laws can and will be prosecuted in US court for violating said laws.

It’s for a court of law to determine if she’s telling the truth or not. If she is, it’s for the court to consider. If she’s not, then the courts can handle that situation as well.
    Comment by O. Bigfoot

Unfortunately it is not for a court of law to consider. KBR makes their employees sign an agreement that all “disputes” (and they somehow consider rape to be a dispute) must be settled through arbitration. And this arbitration is held in front of people hand picked by KBR. KBR has won 80% of it’s arbitration disputes. What do you think the chances are that they are innocent 80% of the time? I’d bet next to nothing.

  35. Doc Rock Says:

The decision by the Bush factotums to exempt contractors from civil and criminal liability is the prime mover in all of this–the criminal’s dream created by the most reprehensible gang of criminals ever to seize power in North America.

  37. bilbobaggins Says:

The contractor should be changed right away because this is bad PR.
Further investigations will show if there are grounds for criminal charges as well.
    Comment by Frank M

Wow, just when you think Francine has hit the bottom s/he has to go and prove us wrong. Halliburton should be “changed” because it is bad PR, not because what they are doing is wrong. Francine is a shining example of the Republiscum “values” voter. They have none.

And, Francine, apparently you don’t listen. Nothing that has anything to do with Halliburton is going to see a court room because their employees sign an agreement to have their “disputes” go to arbitration. And Halliburton apparently considers rape to be a “dispute”. Following that line of reasoning, they would also consider murder to be a “dispute”. Bush made it so that his private armies and contractors can rape, pillage and steal from the us taxpayers with impunity. This is so wrong on so many levels I don’t know where to start.

  38. bilbobaggins Says:

On second thought, I think that Congress should pass a law saying that every contractor will need to sign an agreement to abide by all US laws, no matter where they are located, in order to keep their contracts. That way the Republiscums can’t scream about how the Democrats are trying to take away their contractors as a “back door” way of stopping the occupation of Iraq.

For the life of me I don’t understand why the Democrats in Congress don’t just say, “no more funding for contractors”. That way Bush would have to bring our soldiers home because without the contractors he would not be able to keep our soldiers there.

  40. quebecois Says:

Until Bush is impeacheached, he is the law. If he decides to immunise contractors from prosecution, he can do it, he HAS done it. If these contractors rape and pillage, even in their own employees, they are immune.

  47. randron Says:

Republicans and the “Republican Guard” (Blackwater, Halliburton, KBR, et al) have no interest in freedom, morality, goodness or God; they only care about $$$$$$$$$ … for themselves and for their cronies. If a few people are destroyed in their attempts at self-enrichment, that’s simply the cost of doing business; it’s “collateral damage,” nothing more! They are despicable, immoral, amoral, perverts! Their idea of “freedom” is being able to do anything they want, without consequence. As such, they are very, very free … while the rest of us (apparently willfully) succumb to slavery and bondage.

  48. Keith Says:

    randron,
They don’t just care about money, they also love killing innocent civilian women and children; raping co-workers; doing drugs; and creating a theocracy in the US.

  49. MapleStreet Says:

    #34 Bigfoot -

but don’t forget, if these events were alleged to have happened in Iraq, there is no governing body / no court with jurisdiction. It was outside the USA and KBR has immunity in Iraq.

    Quite a cozy arrangement.

Unfortunately, I have no problem giving the charges credence based on 2 items.

First, sexual excesses are an old accompaniment to military actions (for whatever reason: Some imply that the power aspect of military actions. Some mention the adrenaline rush. Today, some may infer the use of steroids. Whatever. The reason isn’t central to my thoughts).

Second, I used to work under the USA government under ATSDR and saw facts perverted to serve the gentleman’s agreements given to the companies. I saw folks sleeping their way to the top.

  50. Citizen_of_Earth Says:

    53. Comment by MapleStreet — December 16, 2007 @ 9:38 pm

I found this earlier this year and it confirms what you say:

“A recent study by the Department of Justice found that military veterans are twice as likely to be incarcerated for sexual assault than nonveterans. When asked about the finding, Margaret E. Noonan, one of the authors of the study, told the Associated Press, “We couldn’t come to any definite conclusion as to why.” The intrinsic and systemic connection between militarism and violence against women, however, makes this finding far from surprising.”

“A 2003 study reported that 30 percent of female U.S. veterans reported being the victim of rape or attempted rape during their military service. Last year there were 2,374 reports of sexual assault by service members. Despite this, the military quit providing emergency contraception as part of its medical formulary in 2002 (even while officially recognizing its importance), and a recent congressional attempt to reinstate it was scuttled due to lack of support (ironically, the erectile dysfunction drug Levitra is included in the formulary).”

Guess the Administration believes, “boys will be boys”. You can read the story as reported on ABC’s 20/20 here.

Call your representative and ask for Justice for Jamie!

  51. Linda Lindsey Says:

Actually, O. Bigfoot, with the ratio of men to women being 40 to 1 at my camp, not counting the military, I got as much “action” as I wanted. A troll-wife could get laid over there.

The parts of the interview ABC didn’t show were the parts where I explained that I’ve worked for military contractors for the past 18 years, including for Vinnell/Brown & Root, and was surprised at how KBR mismanaged this contract. They also didn’t show the bits where I told them about the individuals in management in Iraq and Houston who tried very hard to make things right, but were helpless.

I’m certainly not disgruntled about a company that gave me a great job. I stayed there for 2 1/2 years, which should tell you something. But I am terribly disappointed with the lack of proper management of such a huge and important contract.
