Olbermann: I Nearly Left MSNBC In 2003 Over Michael Savage’s ‘Spattering Invective’

On PBS’ Bill Moyers Journal this past Friday, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann criticized right-wing radio host Michael Savage, who had a show on MSNBC in 2003. Olbermann recounted how he nearly walked off the set of his Countdown show once when MSNBC told him to run a commentary by Savage.

Describing why he was opposed to including the segment, Olbermann said Savage’s show was “basically just spattering invective on people he didn’t like“:

MSNBC hired a guy named Michael Savage. And he came on and did– not only did he do a show once a week that was basically just spattering invective on people he didn’t like and these people change from week to week, but it was terribly produced. I mean, it was an awful show.

Watch it:

The right wing blog Newsbusters, which is a project of the Media Research Center, came to Savage’s defense yesterday, calling Olbermann’s criticism a “hysterical utterance.” “He also had the unmitigated audacity to criticize conservative radio host Michael Savage,” wrote Newsbusters’ Noel Sheppard.

While Newsbusters has every right to disagree with and criticize Olbermann, it is laughable to suggest that someone needs “unmitigated audacity” to criticize Michael Savage. Here are just a few examples of the “spattering invective” that Savage regularly spews on his show:

“90 percent of the people on the Nobel Committee are into child pornography and molestation.” — Michael Savage [12/12/2007]

“Of all of the dictators in the past, you know the one Al Gore strikes me as [being] closest [to] is Mussolini.” — Michael Savage [7/9/2007]

“Notice what this double-talking slut just did, this mind-slut Barbara Walters. And I stick by those words. She’s an empty mind-slut.” — Michael Savage [3/16/2007]

Madeline Albright is “a traitor. In my opinion, she should be tried for treason, and when she’s found guilty, she should be hung.” — Michael Savage [10/9/2006]

“Liberalism is, in essence, the HIV virus, and it weakens the defense cells of a nation.” — Michael Savage [7/6/2006]

In July 2003, MSNBC fired Savage after he referred to a caller as a “sodomite” and said he should “get AIDS and die.”

To Newsbusters, it appears that the problem isn’t Savage’s “hysterical utterances,” but the fact that MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have the “unmitigated audacity” to decide that they don’t want to be associated with it.

Digg It!

…and, in a couple of minutes, 3 or 4 of them will be here to explain that we’re “anti-free speech”, and that air america does the same thing Savage does. (then i’ll get a pretty good laugh about it) Then they’ll get shown up by a couple dozen other people who are a lot smarter than they are, and we can have another chuckle at that.

    ain’t it fun, Dr. Matt?

comment #4 is typical of the stuff over at newsbusters and mrc and the right in general: ad hominem attacks with no substantial critique.

It appears they’re not intellectually or emotionally interested in — or possibly even capable of — rational discourse.

They think if they shout loud and often enough and with enough rage at those they are unable to comprehend then they’ll be proven right, at least in their own eyes.

Michael Savage is a conflicted, self-loathing pauncy queen.

The sad part about bringing Savage to MSNBC in 2003 is that he was a replacement by the network to Donahue show.
Donahue was not liked because of his views about the war that was about to start in Iraq then .
Savage was the right guy in the right moment to MSNBC before the war started.

    Comment by John Kerry

Again JK, unless you can come here and back up what you are saying, you need to STFU. Please give us ONE, just one, example of news that Keith Olbermann “made up”, or that contains hate, or spin.

As you indicate by the number of days you will have to suffer with Countdown on MSNBC, Keith just recently signed a new multi-year multi-million dollar contract with MSNBC. Here’s what MSNBC had to say about him:

“It (Countdown) is obviously an incredibly important franchise for us,” NBC News President Steve Capus said. “It is something that has really put MSNBC back on the map.”

In addition to his nightly newscast — which counts down the day’s top political and entertainment stories with Olbermman’s signature wit — the MSNBC host will contribute occasional “essays” to the “Nightly News with Brian Williams” and host two “Countdown” specials a year on NBC.

The “essays” will be different from the Olbermann’s “special comments,” which have resonated with “Countdown” fans and helped boost the show’s ratings, up 85 percent over the last year.

If that’s the best evidence you can find to back up your claims, you’re on incredibly shaky ground.

And, yes, it does matter what she said and what the trogs at FNC said about it because that was the subject of Olbermann’s comments. You can believe context doesn’t matter but that doesn’t make it so.

when was the last time you were laid? (have you ever been laid?) never mind – by your comments it’s easy to guess the answer.

    anyway, this is for you:

    Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,
    even to the dull and the ignorant;
    they too have their story.
    Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
    Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
    Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

    Beyond a wholesome discipline,
    be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
    no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
    keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

    (eh?)

I have Comcast with MSNBC on channel185. Faux on , CNN on 35, and CHN on 36. I’ve recently noticed Court TV on34 is now also on channel 80. I’m wondering if anyone knows if Comcast plans to move MSNBC to 34 where it will probably blow both Faux and CNN away in ratings.

Being able to watch MSNBC without a converter will definately increase MSNBC ratings in this Comcast market. Does anybody else see this on their cable system, MSNBC being on a channel requiring a converter?

  93. tombaker says:

I’m a comcast customer who has msnbc right along in the listings with the others. No converter required, but I’m in the Pac NW, and it’s a blue, blue marketplace up here.

I just watched Bill Moyer’s interview of Keith. And now I understand why Keith makes the Republiscums so crazy. He’s way too articulate for them to even understand what he is saying. And since they don’t understand it, they have to believe that what he is saying is either not true or spin.

We should all thank our lucky stars daily that Olberman is around to tell us the truth. I get the truth by visiting blogs on the internet, but many people only watch TV. I turned my daughter on to Countdown and she tells me that she is very glad I did. She is finding her political voice again and glad for it. It’s her generation (the 30 somethings) that are going to change this thing around. They are getting really angry and could be a force to reckon with in the 2008 election.

  101. bilbobaggins says:

Where are the Bilbo’s, etc etc who tried to challenge me to come up with Olby lies. Oh sorry, they’re probably still reading! My mistake. I’ll give you left nutters til tomorrow night to post a reply! And this should be good.
    Comment by John Kerry

You don’t need to wait until tomorrow. Not one thing you posted showed that Keith has told any lies. All you posted was the hysterical rantings of some right wing nutjob who owns “olbermanwatch.com”.

Nice try JK, but there was not one verifiable lie in anything you posted. I have to admit that it did surprise me that you even tried, though. I’ll give you a “C” for effort.

Just posting links is not enough. They must link to actual evidence not unsupported jabbering and name calling.

Is that really so hard to comprehend?

  104. gummitch says:

The mainstream media has been (as it always is) essentially subservient or comatose through this entire administration. What drives wingnuts like johnkerrysdogshathere crazy is that Keith is not part of that coterie and that he’s willing to stick his neck out to call the administration on their bullsh!t. It’s highly unusual behavior, and it’s made worse (for them) by the fact that Olbermann is an excellent writer and speaker; they’re used to blowhards like O’Reilly, Hannity et al that can’t put together a coherent sentence to save their lives. So Olbermann is doubly scary: he speaks truth and he doesn’t sound like a mouth breather. People like johnkerrysteppedinsomethingnasty are frightened by intelligence and will do their best to bring people like Olbermann down to their level. But it doesn’t seem to be working, and a huge amount of credit goes to MSNBC for keeping the show on the air. No doubt they’ve been under a lot of pressure from the White House to shut it down.

  112. SarahMeggison says:

I think this is what is ruining independent media. Snippits “attacking” other “snippets”. The interview Keith Olberman interview on the Jornal was a very good moment in journalism. It brought up deep issues within the corporate media. Keith Olbermann is a man who knows how to play the “game”. You don’t see Bill Moyers on MSNBC or Amy Goodman. But when you see interviews like this one and the ones of Jon Stuart on Crossfire and Stephen Colbert on Charlie Rose you appreciate the journalistic attempts here. I have been visiting this website for a long time. though this is the first comment I have ever made. this is the first time I read any of the comments. Because that’s all it is. Commentary. Which is what the snippit TP chose to show illustrated. This isn’t about an attack on the right. This isn’t about the left or the UP or Down…..It’s about what journalism is and what we need to do fix it.

    Comment by Billy Hill

Thanks for the overall ratings HillBilly, but those really don’t need anything. What is important is the advertisers target audience the 25-55 year old age group and Keith pretty consistently beats O’Lieley in those numbers. Most of O’Lieley’s viewers are getting to the point where they will be dying soon and his numbers will steadily decline as they die.

Another thing that needs to be considered is that Faux Noise plays on many more stations in many more markets than MSNBC thanks to the fact that most of the station owners are Republiscum. If it were truly a level playing field, I’m willing to bet the farm that Countdown would consistently beat O’Lieley even considering his aged audience factor.

  126. True American says:

    For you Keith Kool-Aid drinkers:

So, Matt, why didn’t you share with your readers the entire sentence in question, as well as the one immediately subsequent? Might that have blown your obviously specious premise out of the water? That would have been inconvenenient, wouldn’t it?

Well, let me do what you have been taught by your employers – clearly interested in bashing conservatives regardless of veracity or integrity – not to, and that is share with the reader the entire quote and its context:

Wonderfully, referring to himself as a journalist wasn’t the only hysterical utterance from Olbermann during this interview, as he also had the unmitigated audacity to criticize conservative radio host Michael Savage for “basically just spattering invective on people he didn’t like.”

Hey, Keith, have you ever actually watched your program or read a transcript?

The point this shill either intellectually missed or disingenuously hid was the exquisite irony inherent in Olbermann criticizing someone for “basically just spattering invective on people he [doesn't] like” when this is exactly what this liberal commentator does five nights a week.

You missed this, didn’t you Matt? Or, did you just try to keep it from your readers so that you could totally misrepresent what was written in this piece?

  127. NH Dad says:

I’m curious as to where someone gets their information that shows Bathtube Boy even comes close to beating Oreilly in the ratings. According to Neilson Research, which one could argue is the most trusted ratings group, Oreilly beats him in ALL categories by hundreds of thousand viewers. http://tvbythenumbers.com/2007/11/30/oreilly-vs-olbermann-through-thursday-nov-29/1964

  128. True American says:

Because NH Dad, like Keith O, the libs that populate this site don’t worry about sticky, unimportant, pesky things like facts. They just get in their way.

  129. lebowski says:

Rightwinger credo: if you shout a falsehood often and loudly enough, and with enough rage, it becomes fact.

NHD and “TA” — read through the above posts to find answers to your recycled questions.

Rightwingers accusing others of not being concerned with facts — absolutely incredibe (but see rightwinger credo above).

  130. triplexmonk says:

Here is the full quote that from the Newsbusters article that was “cited”. Its funny how the quote was taken out of context, because if he had posted the entire quote, there wouldn’t be any sting to this post…

” Wonderfully, referring to himself as a journalist wasn’t the only hysterical utterance from Olbermann during this interview, as he also had the unmitigated audacity to criticize conservative radio host Michael Savage for “basically just spattering invective on people he didn’t like.”

Hey, Keith, have you ever actually watched your program or read a transcript?”

    You make me laugh!!

  131. NH Dad says:

Sorry Lebowski. I went to the link posted as comment 143 and that doesn’t prove much with the exception of the story of NBC and MSNBC posting their lists of forced buy-outs to employees due to large “cut-backs”. To me the proof is in the advertising. Watch commercials during the O Factor and you see commercials for Mercedes, BMW, Fidelity Investments, etc. i.e. targeting people with M-O-N-E-Y. Watch a commercial during Bathtube Boy’s show and you see commercials for “The Garden Weasle”, and debt relief. Nuf said.

The Roe Effect–that liberals will one day abort themselves out of existence

  132. lebowski says:

    #165

Thanks again for making unfounded statements with no factual basis. You rightwingers just can’t seem to help bearing out our criticisms of you.

I mean really, mercedes vs garden weasel? Care to cite a source for this impressively idiotic claim? Of course not. Why resort to facts when obviously and embarrassingly unsupported hysterical rants are so much easier on that addled brain of yours.

Liberals will abort themselves out of existence? Wow. And just when I thought your claims could not get more inane.

If you think only “liberals” have abortions then you are truly willfully ignorant on the issue.

And try to read a bit more carefully; the link in comment #143 was posted by someone on your side…

  133. hardhat40 says:

perhaps a more pertinent question…if keith olberman left pMSNBC, would anyone notice?

  134. lebowski says:

Clearly, you devotees of the show would. keep watching — maybe you’ll learn something.

Though, given your obvious dementia, probably not.

  135. NH Dad says:

Lebowski, “statements with no factual basis”?? Your case of Bush Derangment Syndrom probably caused you to miss the link I attached with data compiled for Neilson that shows Oreilly beats Bathtube Boy in ALL categories by hundreds of thousands of viewers per night…so I’ll post again http://tvbythenumbers.com/2007/11/30/oreilly-vs-olbermann-through-thursday-nov-29/1964

Truth in advertising requires no other source than simply watching some of the commercials that air during BOTH Oreilly and Bathtube Boy. Oreilly’s advertisers target a much higher income bracket. Hence Oreilly gets more advertising dollars which not only makes the show a rating success but also a financial success in terms of how much money is brought in.

And although I don’t disagree that conservatives have abortions too, it is at far less frequency than liberals who view it as a form of birth control. Since the majority of children take on the same political views of their parents, that would add credence to my hypothesis that liberals will one day aborth themselves out of existence, hence “The Roe Effect”.

  136. Marmann says:

I remember that savage idiot. And although Keith may have “nearly left MSNBC,” I actually did leave it for a while. I’m very glad to be back now.

I’m not really in favor of cloning human beings, but if I were, I’d begin with Keith Olbermann (and Chris Matthews). Their honesty is a wonderfully refreshing oasis in this vast American desert of lies.

  137. gofigure says:

It seems that MSNBC knew well the incendiary tendencies for this Savage fella, but then again, in those heydays of surrendered journalism post 911, MSNBC dd the predictable thing of trying to keep up with Fox’s conservative onslaught.

This shameful period of mindless overdosing on patriotism allowed the crass likes of savage, o’reilly, coulter, rush(to judgement) to thrive feeding on the mindless masses shocked into political paranoia.

I find it amazing that there are actually people who gives a hoot about this savage, let alone religiously follow his brand of neo-fascism. Also, even if he has the most basic substance of rational(not), he’s gotta work on his style big time(Olbermann should tutor this fella).
