Bush: Iraq doesn’t have nukes…obviously. (Laughter)

Yesterday at a speech in Virginia, President Bush was forced to correct his own misinformation campaign when a questioner mistakenly said that Iraq currently has nuclear weapons:

Q But I’m concerned about the nations like Iraq, who now have nuclear weapons –

THE PRESIDENT: Iran.

Q Iran and Iraq both.

THE PRESIDENT: Not Iraq. (Laughter.)

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/12/unipresiran.320.240.flv]

Commenting on the exchange, MSNBC’s anchors called it a “light moment” because there’s “nothing like being corrected by the President of the United States.” Bush, however, was the one who needed the correction. The most recent NIE found that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003. As late as April 2006, Bush himself still believed Saddam had WMD.

UPDATE: Mike Link points out the last time Bush joked about the missing WMD, in 2004.

Digg It!

Only the Media under this Most Corrupt Administration in the history of the US could find nuclear weapons, “the lighter side of the news”.

This country is been taken over by over paid pundits : Beck, O’Reilly etc. Gone are the days of the Intrepid reporter willing to risk their reputation for a story. This curennt ‘bought and sold’ Media should be ashamed of themselves. They bought into this very much hyped “war on terror”

    According to Naomi Wolf :

Over time in closing societies, real news is supplanted by fake news and false documents. Pinochet showed Chilean citizens falsified documents to back up his claim that terrorists had been about to attack the nation. The yellowcake charge, too, was based on forged papers.

You won’t have a shutdown of news in modern America – it is not possible. But you can have, as Frank Rich and Sidney Blumenthal have pointed out, a steady stream of lies polluting the news well. What you already have is a White House directing a stream of false information that is so relentless that it is increasingly hard to sort out truth from untruth. In a fascist system, it’s not the lies that count but the muddying. When citizens can’t tell real news from fake, they give up their demands for accountability bit by bit

Iran and Libya both ended their nuclear weapons programs within months of the US invasion of of Iraq and the toppling of the Saddam regime. Remember Iran and Iraq fought a 9 year war to a stalemate during the 1980s, killing well over a million people. Then along comes the USA and Saddam is toppled in a few weeks. If you don’t think that had a profoud effect on their decision to put their nuclear weapons program on hold then you are living in a dream world.

Of course Iran isn’t so scared of us anymore thanks to the efforts of the Democrats, so I’m sure their nuclear weapons program will be up and running again soon enough.

Q Mr. President, my name is Mike West. I’m a Stafford resident here. It’s a pleasure to have –

Q Seven years. We moved from Charleston, West Virginia.

My question is, I have three children in the school system here, and I’m very concerned about their well-being, living in this country — and you’ve done a wonderful job of protecting our nation. But I’m concerned about the nations like Iraq, who now have nuclear weapons –

    THE PRESIDENT: Iran.

    Q Iran and Iraq both.

    THE PRESIDENT: Not Iraq. (Laughter.)

Q But my question would be about Iran. How is the diplomatic channels coming through there, as far as —

THE PRESIDENT: No, I appreciate that, thanks. You all read a report the other day that said that Iran had, but halted, a covert military nuclear weapons program. I said in my press conference that that report came out, that that report says to me, when you read it carefully, Iran was a threat, Iran is a threat to peace, and Iran will be a threat to peace if we don’t stop their enrichment facilities because —

(I will skip the rest of this part of the answer, since we have all heard it before.)

My message to the Iranian people is, one, we respect your history and traditions. It’s your government that is isolating you from the world. It’s the decisions that your government has made that is making it more difficult for you to put food on the table, making it more difficult for your family to realize their dreams. And there’s a better way forward for the Iranian people than to have a government that is non-transparent, that has hidden a program, and that refuses to listen to the demands of most of the civilized world, which is give up your — suspend your program.

Let’s see, “It’s your government that is isolating you from the world. It’s the decisions that your government has made that is making it more difficult for you to put food on the table, making it more difficult for your family to realize their dreams.” Sounds familiar?

Um, JT? I know you really want to make a point here. But it’s just not working.

The article and the exchange between the “reporter” and the “President” both explicitly mentioned nuclear weapons.

You, like most right-wingers with little else to peddle, are trying to conflate the term “nuclear program” with “nuclear weapons”. I guess that’s because your nerves are on a such an edge that you jump out of your skin when a doorbell rings on a TV commercial, so you’re naturally inclined to think “weapons” when you hear “nuclear”.

Libya’s ending of their programs, which one State Department official called the “clown prince of WMD programs”, was the result of years of negotiations.

Also, how is it that the US is willing to let the regime in Tripoli, who in the past has invaded their neighbors, supportred terrorist groups and used terrorism themselves, had a WMD program, had been involved in military actions against the US, and brutally suppresses its propulation, stay in power?
Weren’t these the same reasons the US invaded and removed Saddam from power? But now they’re willing to give Khaddafi a pass?

    Comment by Charles James Napier — December 18, 2007 @ 1:55 pm

The same can and has been said about Christianity. There you have it folks, two of the 14 points of Fascism:

    2. Disdain for the importance of human rights

The regimes themselves viewed human rights as of little value and a hindrance to realizing the objectives of the ruling elite. Through clever use of propaganda, the population was brought to accept these human rights abuses by marginalizing, even demonizing, those being targeted. When abuse was egregious, the tactic was to use secrecy, denial, and disinformation.

    3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause

The most significant common thread among these regimes was the use of scapegoating as a means to divert the people’s attention from other problems, to shift blame for failures, and to channel frustration in controlled directions. The methods of choice—relentless propaganda and disinformation—were usually effective. Often the regimes would incite “spontaneous” acts against the target scapegoats, usually communists, socialists, liberals, Jews, ethnic and racial minorities, traditional national enemies, members of other religions, secularists, homosexuals, and “terrorists.” Active opponents of these regimes were inevitably labeled as terrorists and dealt with accordingly.

If the Islamofascist and Christofascist have their way, we will soon be either back in the 13th Century or wiped off the face of the earth along with all other living species, except for the cockroach.

Perhaps we will get lucky and they decide to just kill each other and leave the rest of humanity, those of us who would like to build a future for our children and grandchildren and leave a positive legacy for all future generations, alone.

Then again, I am not sure humanity’s Karma is that good.

Muslim raiders from the time of Mohammed through the first 700 years of Islam overran all of Christian North Africa, Zorastrian Persia, Hindu India as well as Spain and much of Eastern Europe. The Crusades were a response to Muslim aggression and the forced conversion that always follows.

European imperialism in the Arab world has been quite small in comparison to Islamic imperialism in the other direction. And one of the worst products of imperialism, slavery, was also carried on for a far, far longer peroid of time by Arabs than by Europeans or Americans. Slavery was still legal in Saudi Arabia as late as 1962.

Chuck – Iraqis are too busy trying to survive and find potable water to luxuriate in the niceties of elections right now. I know, it’s terribly ungrateful of them, but for some reason, they just can’t get their hearts-and-minds behind the thrill of political campaigning at this time. Maybe it’s because they can’t power their televisions so they can watch the appealing campaign advertising.

  154. gummitch says:

Muslim raiders from the time of Mohammed through the first 700 years of Islam overran all of Christian North Africa, Zorastrian Persia, Hindu India as well as Spain and much of Eastern Europe. The Crusades were a response to Muslim aggression and the forced conversion that always follows.

Horsepuckey. You need to read up on the Crusades a little. Or a lot. The Crusades were an act of aggression that was religious, social and economic in nature. At the time the Crusades were initially launched, in fact, there had been a long period of stasis between Europe and the Islamic world.

    Comment by Charles James Napier — December 18, 2007 @ 2:15 pm

If you’re going to make idiotic claims like that first sentence, you’re going to have to provide some evidence. Before you try it, however, you may want to read up on the Sykes-Picot Agreement.

Slavery is reprehensible but it is not imperalism, and not colonialism. Again, you’ve created a false relationship because you’re on completely untenable ground. Slavery in Saudi Arabia has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not the Muslim world has reason to be suspicious of the West.

Nice Disney-worthy spin, Napier. No romanticize about how the US created Saddam Hussein. Who was his biggest patron throughout his brutal reign? It wasn’t far back, even for your little mind to recall. It was just the late 80’s that Rummy was shaking his hand and Bush Sr. was in bed with him. So tell me more romantic stories about the US liberating the Iraqi’s from the brutal dictator that the US installed, financed, condoned and supported for decades. Tell me about it. I want to hear. Your Disney fables are so good.

The book on the Crusades is massive. I’d suggest starting with A Peace to End All Peace, because the post WWI history of the region is not something that gets taught in school and it is absolutely crucial to understanding how screwed up the region became after the fall of the Ottomans. Or how, for that matter, the Ottoman regime left its stamp on the region. There’s also a pretty good history of Iraq that clarifies the connection between the Ottoman rule, the British mandate and the subsequent political and economic division between the Shiites and the Sunnis that transcends “mere” religious dogma, but I don’t have that title handy.

  170. tombaker says:

  171. Spudge Boy says:

And of course our Christian fundies completely ignore the Christian Crusader’s cannibalism and the Massacre of Ma’arrat al-Numan.

    Massacre of Ma’arra

One of the crusader commanders wrote to Pope Urban II: “A terrible famine racked the army in Ma’arra, and placed it in the cruel necessity of feeding itself upon the bodies of the Saracens.”

Radulph of Caen, another chronicler, wrote: “In Ma’arra our troops boiled pagan adults alive in cooking-pots; they impaled children on spits and devoured them grilled.”

The Closed Circle: An Interpretation of the Arabs

by David Pryce-Jones who is a senior editor at National Review magazine, and contributes to The New Criterion.

According to Source Watch, he is a right-wing British author and commentator. He is a Zionist and avid supporter of Israel. which is not surprising since he is Jewish. On Feb. 16, 2003 he wrote in the London Telegraph:

“It is unlikely that the war in Iraq will consist only of a land invasion. Rather, teams of special forces will be used to seize and secure strategic positions, such as the oilfields and the dams on the Tigris and Euphrates, so that they can be protected from any attempt to blow them up. If this can be done quickly, there may well be no civilian casualties at all: the regime may simply implode, leaving Saddam to the fate of Ceaucescu – a dictator barking orders that no one obeys. Saddam is known to be highly conscious of that possibility. According to defectors he keeps a tape of the toppling and execution of Ceaucescu and watches it regularly.

Far from leading to an “explosion” in the Arab world, the removal of Saddam would do much to encourage stability in the Middle East. Baghdad would cease to be a haven for terrorists, particularly the Palestinian suicide bombers whom Saddam has subsidised. The majority of Arabs long to see Saddam removed. A number of Arab governments are tyrannies only marginally less brutal than that of Saddam Hussein. They view his removal with anxiety, for they know the precedent it will set: if a democratic Iraq flourishes, it will be an inspiration to – among others – the peoples of Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt. It will encourage all of them to get rid of the corrupt dictators who have oppressed, stultified and impoverished their countries – just as the fall of the Berlin Wall encouraged the whole of eastern Europe to replace tyranny with democracy and socialism with private enterprise.”

Thanks anyway, but I will pass on reading his version of history.

Then back in Iraq there arose such a clatter, I turned on the news to see their children’s blood splatter.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof, the prancing and pawing of Larry Craig’s hoof.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, down the chimney St. Huckie came with a bound.

He was scary and hump, a right wing old elf, and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.

    A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, soon gave me to know I had a lot to dread;

    And laying his finger aside of his nose, he took a big snort and up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, all he wanted was the keys to the missiles.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, vote for me and good-night.”
