Romney embraces Bush.

By Amanda Terkel on Dec 19th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

Romney embraces Bush.

Despite attempts to distance himself from the President in the past, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has now become one of Bush’s biggest defenders:

romneybushr.jpg I support our troops, and I support what our troops are doing. I also support our president. I believe that the president has acted in good faith and out of a desire to protect this country to do everything in his power to keep America safe. [...]

The president is a person who is deeply devoted to this country and doing what’s right for this country, and protecting American lives.

Romney also recently called on former governor Mike Huckabee to apologize for criticizing the administration’s foreign policy, and he delivered a major speech on religion at the library of former president George H.W. Bush.

    MLK & Mitt:

Asked about the specifics of George Romney’s march with MLK, Mitt Romney’s campaign told the Phoenix that it took place in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. That jibes with the description proffered by David S. Broder in a Washington Post column written days after Mitt’s College Station speech.

Broder, in that column, references a 1967 book he co-authored on the Republican Party, which included a chapter on George Romney. It includes a one-line statement that the senior Romney “has marched with Martin Luther King through the exclusive Grosse Pointe suburb of Detroit.”

But that account is incorrect. King never marched in Grosse Pointe, according to the Grosse Pointe Historical Society, and had not appeared in the town at all at the time the Broder book was published.

    And why not?

You should attempt to read, though. No one mocked the Republicans for distancing themselves from Bush; the comments were that this is a reflection on Bush and the fact that no one wanted to tie themselves to his disastrous administration.

Apparently Romney can’t see the problem.

From my perspective, it’s the people like you that are lemmings (if you are sticking with the inaccurate story about lemmings and cliffs, but that’s another tale).

Right, because Romney would never switch completely on major issues just because an election was in view. Nice delusion, but at least for the moment you’re sticking to the subject. I’m not expecting that to last.

  24. Menehune says:

I believe that the president has acted in good faith and out of a desire to protect this country to do everything in his power to keep America safe. –Mitt Romney

If you believe that statement, Mr. Romney, then surely you must believe the President to be an incompetent buffoon. It either takes complete ineptitude or abject malice to miss every shot you attempt. And if all the President’s bricks were laid with the intention of scoring real points, then it’s clear he is only fit to warm the bench–or perhaps cheerlead.

Though I don’t know if it is still a tenet of their faith, the Mormons used to say that the US Constitution and Government were divinely inspired, which is why they tend to be very patriotic as a rule, and tend not to criticize the government. This was even cynically exploited by the US Government when it came to choosing its atomic sites. They knew that where ever they put them, someone was going to be downwind even in sparsely the populated West. The Nevada sites were chosen because the Mormons in Eastern Nevada and Utah were not seen as the type to raise a stink. I would have thought that the resulting poisoning of many members of the LDS population would have shaken their faith in the US government. This was neither a wholly Republican or Democratic doing– it was a policy that lasted decades and crossed party lines. Not really apropos of anthing really, except that I feel Mitt has similarly misplaced his faith in this President.

And even crazier—they believe the Garden of Eden was in Missouri!

    Comment by Keith — December 19, 2007 @ 5:26 pm

Actually they believe the black skin was the “Mark of Cain”. Its in their “Discourses” the writings of their “Prophets”. That is why they denied the priesthood to blacks.
That is until there was a lawsuit, then suddenly the Prophet “had a vision” and God changed his mind, now blacks can hold the priesthood. Black men rather.

For those who don’t know, all men in the LDS church are ordained as priests. Women are not considered worthy of priesthood.

Heck, if the MSM were still effective, we could eliminate the entire field and get better candidates. Alas, change comes slowly when it’s driven from the bottom. But, assuming anyone is left to care, we should see a new era of responsible government in our lifetimes.

Of course, it could take angry mobs dragging the current crop of criminals out of office. However, I find it hard to believe said criminals have the courage to take it that far.

    Views on subduing insurgencies

General Napier put down several insurgencies in India during his reign as Commander-in-Chief in India, and once said of his philosophy about how to do so effectively:

“The best way to quiet a country is a good thrashing, followed by great kindness afterwards. Even the wildest chaps are thus tamed”[3]

He also once said that “the human mind is never better disposed to gratitude and attachment than when softened by fear”[3]

An implementation of this theory would be after the Battle of Miani, where most of the Mirs surrendered. One leader held back and was told by Napier:
Here’s a highlight. Any guesses why he would choose as a role model a conquering oppressor faced with an insurgency?

“Come here instantly. Come here at once and make your submission, or I will in a week tear you from the midst of your village and hang you”"[3]

The reason he felt brutality was necessary for the proper conquest of rebellions may have been his opinion that “so perverse is mankind that every nationality prefers to misgoverned by its own people than to be well ruled by another”[3] Whatever the reason for his views on fighting insurgencies, the fact remains that he was one of Great Britain’s most effective generals at doing this in India, often facing well-armed fighters.”

I don’t know about more valid, but definitely better informed and more likely to be respected. For example, John McCaine’s views of torture and what constitutes it are definitely informed by his years in prison being tortured by the North Vietnamese.

In discussing battlefield issues, strategy as far as the military goes, yeah a seasoned war veteran will know more about the subject. ( securing the Oil Minestry in Iraq first and leaving weapon/ammo dumps unguarded or unblown was a big no-no from my military experience for example. My CO would have skinned us alive if we ever made such a fck-up )

Also the torture issues… in the Army Field manual it explicitly states torture is illegal, and is banned. If we torture then we have no legal or moral standing if our soldiers are treated the same.

I’m curious, but I think I know the answer. If you had it to do over again, would you do it the same way?
    Comment by CaptainMantastic — December 19, 2007 @ 10:16 pm

Let me answer it this way.
I tried to sign up after 9/11, to go help get Osama but they didn’t want me I was “too old” and my injury. =P

I knew they probably wouldn’t but I tried anyway.
So yeah, I would do it over again.

I still think Afghanistan needed to happen, But frankly Bush has totally fcked up the whole region with his idiotic execution of the war. And invading Iraq for WMDs they made up and bald faced lied to us about. The reasons we didn’t take out Saddam in 91, happened, only made worst by utter military idiocy.

Right after the election of 2004 ( they waited until after Bush won ) They dropped a white phosphorous burst over Fallujah, killing civilians, the elderly, women, children.
If the initial combustion when it sucked all of the oxygen didn’t kill them right off, the phosphorous melting their skin off finished the job.
Frankly, melting the skin off babies never endears an occupied civilian population.

Think about it for a minute…..Turn it around……
What if a foreign force occupying the US had done that to the town, your Mom lives in?
    What would you do?

What do you think that made the Iraqi civilians want to do?

Thats just one way they boosted the insurgency, and the pictures that got out, even though the Bush Administration tried to censor horrified and pissed off even some of our allies.
    Abu-Grabass was another debacle.

I can list alot more strategic mistakes made in Iraq, but it would take all night typing.

    One of my biggest peeves:

And I have been protesting for veteran rights since Bushco started screwing over veterans and the war wounded. The media has practically ignored every protest I have been to.
It’s total bullsh!t the way vets have been systematically screwed over for the last 7 years. Support the Troops, my ass.
You realize the Republican Congress ended the yearly meetings with veteran groups, to hear their grievances after a half a century, to as they said “To avoid embarrasing the President” WTF?

Finally the media has broken some of the stuff that went on.
I debated with Exley about veteran treatment well over a year ago. He never has come back to admit he was wrong, after the MSM finally broke it open.

All I can say, if you are a veteran, you need to take a very close look at the way Bush has been treating your brothers and sisters in arms.
It is not right and there is no excuse in the world that can make it right.
