The White House’s war on NYT.

By Faiz Shakir on Dec 19th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

The White House’s war on NYT.

Today, the New York Times reports that at least four legal staffers in the White House participated in discussions about whether to destroy the CIA tapes. The Hill reports:

The White House on Wednesday took the rare step of publicly asking The New York Times to change the sub-headline of a story on the destruction of CIA tapes showing the interrogations of suspected terrorists.

At issue is the story’s sub-headline that stated: “White House Role Was Wider Than It Said.” The White House called this sub-headline inaccurate and demanded that it be corrected.

The Corner has the White House press release. The White House’s main complaint appears to be that they never explicitly said their role was limited. “We have not described — neither to highlight, nor to minimize — the role or deliberations of White House officials in this matter,” the release states, seemingly conceding that more White House staffers could be involved.

UPDATE: In today’s White House Press Briefing, Dana Perino said the New York Times plans to “correct” its subheadline.

Where's Judith Miller when you need some judicious editing, eh?

  2. Menehune Says:

Hey Frank... the White House isn't saying the story is false--only that they have never said anything publicly about it previously so it can't be "wider" than what they have let on.

Ah yes, Frank M advocating BIG GOVERNMENT CENSORSHIP.

  4. Bobwurst Says:

I agree with Frank M, the article should be pitched and and new one detailing ALL the crimes the bush adminstration has commited over the past 7 years should be detailed. The article, or special edition, should then call for the immediate impeachment of bush and cheney, then the trials of all the crooks.

  12. missmolly Says:

Question: Why does the White House get advance notice of what the NYT is printing? I would think that with true freedom of the press, content wouldn't have to be run through the WH filter before publishing.

Of course, it IS possible that the WH took issue with the subheading AFTER the paper was published, and demanded a correction for subsequent editions. Any citizen (including those in the WH) who feels a printed story (or headline) is inaccurate can voice an objection -- particularly if the story is about them. The paper can print a retraction, correct the story for subsequent editions of that paper, or ignore the request altogether.

In this case, the WH is contesting on a technicality -- did they ever "say" how wide the WH role was in the destruction of the tapes? If they didn't, then the NYT needs to change the headline and issue a correction (which will be somewhat hilarious, because the correction will say something along the lines of "the WH never claimed the conspiracy to destroy these tapes was less than it now appears to be").

Personally, I think the WH is in enough trouble. They should leave well enough alone.

  16. raynman Says:

Please don't let Frank and his willingness to destroy the Constitution for a false illusion of 'safety' so that he can enjoy his caffe latte derail this ....

The real issue is an attempt by the White House to censor, or at least alter, an article describing illegal activities under their watch. As has been said before, it's usually not the crime... its the coverup that gets you in trouble.....

  17. toasterhead Says:

They should correct the entire article - by deleting it.

I heard a lot of this sentiment during the Watergate scandal. Many Americans (mostly Nixon fans) felt that to investigate the criminal doings of that White House only served to damage the country and should cease and desist.

This is like ignoring cancer. If you ignore it and allow it to fester and grow unimpeded, it will eventually destroy you.

Nixon's administration was thoroughly corrupt and needed to be rooted out and ended. And it was. We then had two honest presidents -- Ford and Carter -- who restored a sense of integrity to the office. Looking back, we see that shining a light on the Nixon administration and exposing it, though painful at the time, was far better for the country in the long run than just ignoring it.

Now we have another administration that stinks to high heaven. Every day seems to bring a new revelation of abuse of power. We need to perform some surgery on this, too.

  20. Zimzone Says:

    Yeah, that damn 'librul' NYT.

You mean the paper that didn't run Chris Dodd's last minute stand against Telcom retroactive immunity?

Hey, NYT, how about a lead story on how Frank M. is continually licking Bush's ass?

Tell me, Frank -- did you make this same protest when the media were having a field day over Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky? I mean -- even if the stories about them were true, wasn't it hurting the nation more then helping it to report them?

  22. hellinabucket Says:

Is the WH stating that they way certain things are described can alter the content? Kind of like how GW changed his rhetoric about Iran from "they have nukes" to "they are attempting to acquire nuclear capabilities"?

    Clear as mud.

  23. TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong Says:

The Resident claimed at the time this story came out that he didn't know anything about it and, "it will be interesting to see how it all turns out", (not an exact quote but close enough)

So that would indicate that "they" did originally downplay any involvement, thereby making the Times sub-header accurate!

    And P.S. Frank M. is Anti-American!

  24. zuch Says:

OIC. They're not liars. They're just crooks. Glad we got that straightened out.

You know, it might help if they "clarified" what it was that they did, and not just what they said.

And FWIW, if it's open season on demanding retractions or "clarifications" and getting them, then I assume that Joke Line and the WaPo are next in line to comply when others request it ... ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaa-heh, that was funny, Arne, you're such a jokester....

    Cheers,

Don't the barn door hit you in your sorry a$$ on the way out of dodge, Bush Cabal! The people no longer can trust you or believe a word you say. Your credibility is shot, thanks to your own pathological lying on a daily basis.

It's people like you who support Bush who live in fear and act like cowards. I happen to live and work in New York City, I don't allow the possibility of an attack deter me from going about my life. That's what you and your ilk do supporting an administration that is making a mockery of the Constitution, destroying the economy (have you looked at the value of the dollar), making our country hated throughout the world (I travel a lot outdside the country), and making us actually less safe.

    And, lastly, it's not your, it's you're.

  48. Red Pill Says:

I used to chafe at comparisons between this White House and Hitler, if only because, as an historian, I find the invocation of Hitler and that Nazis altogether too cavalier in contemporary political discourse.

I will say, however, that despite that, no informed individual could fail to note parallels between Bush's theory of the "unitary executive" and Hitler's "Fuhrerprinzip" (Leader Principle) administrative style. Both employed willful and occasionally malicious disregard for the national parliament/legislature, and both explicitly prized loyalty over competency, with equally disastrous results for the efficacy of the bureaucratic apparatus.

Bush is no Hitler, but his leadership style surely harbors echoes of Nazi political philosophy.

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper — December 19, 2007 @ 2:32 pm

Basically, the whole idea of America has been mocked, as have all the founders. The goal of the Bushites and neocons is to weaken America until it is just their bank and employment office. They have shown, many times, that they have more loyalty to Saudi Arabia than to the USA, starting with the 9/11 failure, and enabling the Bin Laden family to escape without even being questioned. That's all I needed to know to push for impeachment, trial and hanging of the whole administration. These are the same people that fought freeing the slaves, women's suffrage, child labor laws, unions, public education, medicare, Social Security, WW2 involvement, and dozens more specifically American advances to freedom and civilized life for all. The wingnuts that visit here to leave their turds of wisdom have one thing in common: pure, screaming cowardice. Their motivation is fear, their fear is based on ignorance and blind loyalty to the very men that put them in danger in the first place.

My dog is smarter than they are.

  59. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Let's add using the Justice Department for political purposes and rampant election fraud. And my favorite insignificant constitutional crime: breaking the terms of the 14th Amendment by claiming publically, over and over, that Treasury bills are "worthless pieces of paper."

And again, Hitlery, if you're NOT a Bush supporter, set us straight and tell us who you voted for in 2000 and 2004. I'll start. In 2000, I voted for Gore and in 2004, I voted for Kerry. Come on you sniveling little coward, put up or shut up and crawl back into your stinking little hole.

  60. tombaker Says:

HfDC - I think it's called the "Establishment Clause". It's not a "law" pe se, but something even more important - a "fundamental, or founding, principle".

If the Founders were less than clear on some of these issues, it is only because they could not envision anyone so craven and callow as to abjure those fundamental principles. Present-day Righties have proven them insufficiently pessimistic as to the eventual "character" of some players on the national stage.

  61. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Hitlery: "Col. Jack yopu first. Please tell all us dopes where you fine the “separation of church and state” in our beloved Constitution?"

It's in the Bill of Rights, dumbass. "Congress shall pass no law..." The administration's Faith-based charity operation arguably violates that part of the consitution. If you don't think it does, make a reasonable argument to that effect.

  62. tombaker Says:

None of us are dumb enough to buy the line that the Republicans of the 1860's bear any resemblance to today's R's.

What's the matter Hitlery. I am only accepting your invitation, "I live just across the river. We should meet and talk. HAHAHA”

Or was that just more of the same nonsense you've been spouting all day? Typical of you wingnut blowhards... make a threat then cry foul when you get called on it. More of the It's ok when we do it but when you do it, it's wrong mentality.

Crawl back up Cheney's ass you neocon turd.

  86. Arn Gunnutes Says:

The BEST thing about MURDERER BusHitler the COXUCKER punk TRAITOR to the USA is that when he finally DROPS DEAD and

Satan will SMASH BusHitler's face EVERY SECOND for ETERNITY!

    re 101:

you hit the nail on the head with the "More of the It’s ok when we do it but when you do it, it’s wrong mentality." This is the logic behind every rightwingnut out there. From the pres, to the preachers, to politicians, to the pointyheadedtrolls. They can dish it out but they can't take it.

  88. Arn Gunnutes Says:

BusHitler is a COXUCKER punk TRAITOR to the USA who will BURN IN HELL FOR ETERNITY for his EVIL DEEDS.

Along with MORON and TRAITOR Reagan.

When are you going to honor your challenge to TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong?

    Bob,

What I have never been able to figure out is what kinda crazy upside down black is white, white is black world do they live on that they just can't seem to see the hypocrisy of their words and actions?

I mean for godsake, everytime you turn around another famliy-values-we-hate-gays-GOP-nuttbagg is falling out of the tree for having an affair with another person of either sexual persuasion. and yet these locksteppers just keep fallin' in line and repeating that mantra.

It would be funny if...they weren't destroying this country with their hatred and criminallity!

Now I know why there used to be a liberal bias in the media. Every one knows that the truth has a liberal bias, now that the conglomerates control the news that liberal bias has gone the way of truth.

yeah, it's easier to just assume that whatever these people are railing against is what they're up to their asses in. Whether it's sexual "sin". political corruption, theocratic facism, anynomous buttsex, etc. I keep hoping that one of the republican cantidopes will come out against honesty. It's our only hope.

I know you are, I can smell it on you. Smells like P_$$y. Bush wears that same scent when he's swaggering about "Bring 'em on" Cause he knows he doesn't have to do his own fighting. He'll send our brave men and women and then dress up and pretend to be tough, just like you're doing here.

I don't remember ever claiming to be a peacenik, though? Just more wishful thinking on your part so you wouldn't have to have that tugboat ass of yours back up that battleship mouth you've got going, I guess?

  99. TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong Says:

    re:116 You mean they haven't already? ;)

  100. Lefty Patriot Says:

    Whitewater, right, Zero.

Blue dress, excellent, real national security issue, well worth the $50 million.

    Biggest tax increase, Reagan.

Bombing an aspirin factory, which Clinton was the targeting officer?

White house travel office, nothing, zero.

FBI files, nothing, zero. Rose law firm, nothing, zero.

Sandy Berger, copies of his own writings. Deep, very deep.

Any more bullshit I can shoot down without trying?

  101. Bobwurst Says:

Whitewater: a twenty year old land deal that the clintons lost money on. that was worth the 80 million dollars to dig up.

Blue Dress:tied to the bj, see comment above about the value

Biggest Tax increase in history: Setting aside the "Biggest" part for the moment, this lead to the fastest growing economny the country ever experienced. Clinton was able to wipe out the rrecord breaking reagan deficet. I can see why you'd be pissed about that.

Bombing an asprin factory: A good faith effort to fight terrorists. I can see why you'd be against fighting Bin Laden seeing as how he and your boy bush are so tight.

Whitehouse Travel office: this is to petty, even for you. and Clinton fired those involved.

    FBI Files: see above

Rose Law Firm records: see above

Having flunkys steal documents and then stuff them down their pants: this is a right wing fabrication. Berger didn't stuff them down his pants. (what is is with you wankers and other peoples' pants?) he accidently got some papers mixed up with his own, he's been prosecuted and paid his debt to society. Unlike Scooter, for instance.

If this is the sum of your list, you might want to go back to school. idiot.

  102. Lefty Patriot Says:

Come on , P, google is your friend. You should be able to find some more rightwing fantasies to post to show what a weak, deluded liar you are. We understand your envy, since you're stuck trying to live down the most incompetent, cowardly, dishonest administration in US history. Too bad, that's what you have to live with, it sucks to be you.

  103. Bobwurst Says:

"It’s easy to threaten a hate crime on an anon Blog. Lets see if you really mean what you say.
    I need convincing!!
    hfdc"

He merely responded to your threat whiny boy. back up your words coward. What is it about wingnuts and hatecrimes anyway? you cowards just have to fabricate them.

  104. TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong Says:

You can't say when, can you? You ain't no daisy.

    Now slither away, little boy.

No kidding. Truly an indication of a weak, uninformed mind. The Bush-Walker clan dates back to the 1830's. Bush was the 17th legacy from his family at Yale. It's a string of legacies which goes back to 1840.

By contrast, the Clinton family began in the 1980's. It dates back to.... Clinton marrying Hillary Rodham!

The Bush-Walker clan's history includes stealing the bones of Geronimoe from a national museum, complicity in an attempted coup in 1933, indictments under the Trading with the Enemy Act for providing banking services to the Nazis during WWII, numerous insider trading scandals over the decades.
