The funny thing to me is that I can understand why the IRS will necessarily always hold a low approval rating - their job is to collect money from me. Even if they do it very nicely and I understand that taxes are the price we pay for government services, I'll never really like having my money taken.

But FEMA is there to give me assistance when I need it. They are the knights in white armor charging into a disaster area to save me. How could they ever get a low opinion rating ?

(for the thick headed - no need to explain it to me).

Can we have two votes because, luckily, FEMA does not touch most of our lives. The TSA is an unmitigated disaster and an affront to humanity. So 9/11 happened and we have predictably overreacted. Taking your shoes off is not a small thing, it is ploy to look efficient. One hundred million to one than Richard the Shoe bomber would have been successful in any small way. But we will pay forever in the name of security. Pablum is all that it is. A walk-through screening of the the x-ray is sufficient. Let's modernize the security process and get rid of those extra government (im)positions.

I agree with bilbo, Bloomberg/Hagel would really take votes away from the Republican candidate. Their voters are not satisfied with Giuliani, Romney, or Huckabee.

It was funny on "Democracy Now" today when a New Orleans resident who lost her home in the projects said "They don't want no more projects. They want CONDOMS."

Just wait, it has been around before. Unless it is someone new with that moniker, you will find out soon what side of the fence it is on and I don't remember it to be a civil troll.

Off topic but interesting - mea culpa for digressing on this but check it out: Bloomberg and Hagel talking about a run in 08! Where’s that idiot troll Joneser so I can rub his face in it?

Joneser won't like that. That combination is more likely to pull votes from the Republiscums than from the Democrats. Bloomberg isn't exactly a flaming Liberal and Hagel may have some backbone when it comes to Iraq, but otherwise he's pretty much a straight ticket Republiscum.

'
So Tracy, you think that paying income taxes is "stealing from the American people". What do you think about all the contractors in Iraq who have been paid for work they never did. Do you think that is stealing from the American taxpayers?

MiMiCccs, that's pretty scary stuff. Whom do you think would fill these camps and under what pretense. That is, what legal mechanism would a government use to justify putting citizens in these camps? Understand, I'm not arguing with you that this is impossible - we did it to Japanese Americans - I'm just wondering what you think is going on here.

The effectiveness of FEMA is a great way to compare the approach of the two parties. Since modern Repubs don't really believe in civil government, they tend to make appointments strictly on the basis of patronage with less concern for the job itself. That's how you get a guy like Brownie or Bernie Kerik.

Democrats generally believe in civil government and take it more seriously so they tend to think more in terms of the job itself. That's why Clinton would appoint a disaster management expert like James Lee Witt to head FEMA. FEMA worked a lot better under an expert's management and now Witt travels around the world giving seminars in disaster management.

Most people think FEMA's main job is to deal with natural disasters. Wrong.

Everything you ever wanted to know about FEMA but were afraid to ask is here.

http://www.freedomfiles.org/war/fema.htm

FWIW, FEMA arrived in NYC on 9/10/2001 in preparation for a biowarfare excercise called Tripod II scheduled to begin on 9/12 (not to be confused with the FEMA urban search and rescue teams who came after 9/11). More support for the Coincidence Therorists.

I still remember that after its spectacular performance dealing with the effects of Hurricane Rita in Florida FEMA was held in very high regard. Of course, that was when a competent president was running things.

it will be YEARS, possibly a generation or more, before FEMA, to say nothing of the SC(R)OTUS, the Congress, the Coast Guard, the Smithsonian, the CDC, and the whole panoply of USer institutions which it was their JOB to destroy and discredit, escape the obloquy and ignominy to which they have descended under the tender ministrations of the pro-CorporoRat, fascistic Bush cabal.

Look folks...

Y'all are still acting as if we, the Americans, matter.

Obviously shoring up the levee was a bad business decision. Just like letting all thems negroes come back to their OWN homes is also bad bidness. I think them in power should think of bringing in the Blackwater boys, so them boys can help out beat up them uppity black grandmas mouthing off that they are blocked from living on their OWN land.

Us elites hates them uppity negroes. Git back to yer trailer, negroes! Inhale the fumes, and die off! Heck, it almost worked for that german moustache guy, ain't tat the truth now?
