On the morning of election day 2002, repeated hang-up calls assaulted six phone lines tied to the New Hampshire Democratic Party. Three Republican operatives, including consultant Allen Raymond, eventually ended up in jail for their involvement in the phone jamming scheme. A fourth, former RNC offical James Tobin, will begin a second trial in February.
In his new book, Raymond alleges that the scandal goes “to the top of the Republican Party” because “the Bush White House had complete control of the RNC” and there was no way such a risky tactic wouldn’t have been “vetted by” Tobin’s “high-ups”:
“The Bush White House had complete control of the RNC, and there was no way someone like Tobin was going to try what he was proposing without first getting it vetted by his high-ups,” Raymond wrote in How To Rig an Election, a book set for publication next month. “That’s if Tobin, rather than one of his bosses, had even thought of the ploy himself - which seemed unlikely.”
Phone records obtained in a civil suit brought against the NH GOP by the NH Democratic Party show that “Tobin made 22 calls to the White House political office in the 24 hours before and after the jamming” while the Republican National Committee has paid over $6 million in legal fees for Tobin.
Yesterday, McClatchy reported that “senior Justice Department officials” delayed prosecuting Tobin “until after the 2004 election” as part of an effort to protect the GOP “from the scandal until the voting was over“:
However, the official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, told McClatchy that senior Justice Department officials slowed the inquiry. The official didn’t know whether top department officials ordered the delays or what motivated those decisions.
The official said that Terry O’Donnell, a former Pentagon general counsel who was representing Tobin, was in contact with senior department officials before Tobin was indicted.
Marcy Wheeler notes that Tobin’s lawyer, Terry O’Donnell, is also “Dick Cheney’s long-time personal attorney.”
House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) wrote to Attorney General Michael Mukasey today, requesting documents and answers about the case.

December 20th, 2007 at 7:46 pmwhat an unsavory stew of fecal matter and republican politics.
December 20th, 2007 at 7:48 pmI wouldn’t be too sure about that, beltman. A Democratic president’s Justice department will still be able to investigate various cases of election fraud which have taken place over the last 6 years. These are federal crimes, many of which come with prison terms. For example, the reason Karl Rove quickly resigned a couple of months ago was probably related to this and the situation in Alabama. We know from congressional testimony that repubs associated with this administration have been involved with voter “caging” which is a federal crime. We know Karl Rove was involved with the very strange vote switch which happened in the middle of the night in Alabama in 2002. I expect to see Rove relentlessly dogged by a Democratic Justice Department for federal crimes related to election fraud, tampering with the judiciary and turning federal prosecutor offices into political operatives. These are federal crimes and a different justice department should have no problem finding evidence and bringing indictments.
December 20th, 2007 at 7:49 pmComment by Ret. Col. Berkeley Daily Planet
Another Stolen Election: By JAMES K. SAYRE
COMMENTARY (11-09-04)
The exit polls that showed a sweeping victory for Sen. Kerry on Nov. 2 were right. Unfortunately, the 2004 presidential election was cleanly stolen by Bush & Co. How, you say? With the help of Diebold, ES&S, Sequoia and SAIC, four interlocked secretive right-wing electronic voting machine manufacturers. We have entrusted the most important election task, that of actually counting and tabulating the vote totals to extremist organizations with secret proprietary vote-counting computer software with no auditable paper trail for hand recounts. How very convenient, how very clean, how very slick and with all the evidence of election rigging is buried deep on their computer hard drives.
Sen. Kerry won a landslide victory by between two million and five million votes. The pre-election public opinion polls pointed to a large and growing Kerry election day majority and the election day exit polls also indicated a Kerry victory. Unfortunately, theocratic extremely right-wing computer election machine manufacturing corporations were in charge of “counting†the votes of millions and millions of Americans. Some how, a few million Kerry votes didn’t get counted and a few million bogus Bush votes showed up in the final election tallies and voila, a Bush “victory.â€
Democracy in 21st century America has been kidnapped and destroyed by extreme right-wing control of the new secret computerized electronic vote counting systems. Verifiable hand-counted paper ballots are the only way to restore legitimate elections in America…
The 2000 and 2004 presidential elections were both stolen by Bush & Co. The 2008 and 2012 presidential elections will suffer the same fate unless we institute a complete and total return to traditional, verifiable hand-counted paper election ballots.
The Republican Party will never lose another presidential election as long as we allow their corporate buddies to “count†our votes in secret
end of letter.
P. S. this letter was posted on several right wing blogs and they sneered and smirked and said, oh, just another crazy Berkeley hippie, but unfortunately, details revealed over the past three years have shown that my original assertions were right on target.
Cheers
December 20th, 2007 at 8:21 pmMaybe the fourteen calls to the White House switchboard were all prank calls.
Maybe Tobin would call, then ask whoever answered if they “had Prince Albert in a can”. Then when they said no, he’d still answer “Well, you better let him out”, giggle then hang up.
I’m told James Tobin doesn’t quite “get” the whole prank call thing.

December 20th, 2007 at 9:44 pmPhone jamming scandal
Main article: 2002 New Hampshire Senate election phone jamming scandal
A Democratic analysis of phone records introduced at the 2005 criminal trial of James Tobin, the Northeast political director for the RNC in 2002, show that he made 115 outgoing calls - mostly to the same number in the White House office of political affairs - between September 17 and November 22, 2002. At the time, the office of political affairs was headed by Ken Mehlman. Two dozen of the calls were made from 9:28 a.m. the day before the election through 2:17 a.m. the night after the voting, a three-day period during which the criminal phone jamming operation was finalized, carried out, and then abruptly shut down.

Hell with the “media darlings” that can’t even be bothered to show up to do their jobs. =|
The way the media is deliberately manipulating the election so far is nothing less than nauseating to me.
I am going to start demanding something be done about the obvious favoritism by the media, manipulating elections, excluding some candidates now at the earliest stages of the election before a single primary vote has been cast. Each and every candidate deserves to be heard, and it is our right to be able to hear what each one has to say, in order to insure a free and far democratic election.
This is manipulation of the election in a manner that if it is not illegal, it damn sure should be. I am going to be searching Thomas ( Library of Congress ) and find out.

Normally, there is a process involved in a crisis situation, but this administration is rewriting the book. Scandal after scandal continue to develop, overlapping others as they continue to mount.

December 21st, 2007 at 2:12 amI’m affraid that all of these scandals surrounding Bush and his adminstration will eventually be forgotten, especially if Hillary is elected. Remember, as Bill Clinton was taking office in 1993, three important investigations were underway, all of which Clinton could have helped by ordering key documents declassified or giving other backing to the investigators. Iran-Contra, “Iraqgate”, and the “October Surprise” case were all swept under the rug.
In his 2004 memoirs, My Life, Clinton wrote; “Finally, President Bush had given decades of service to our country, and I thought we should allow him to retire in peace, leaving the matter between him and his conscience.”
Some believe that Bill’s recent declaration that Hillary’s first act as President would be to send Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush on an around-the-world mission is an olive branch to the Bush administration that their crimes will be overlooked if Hillary becomes president.

December 21st, 2007 at 7:33 amHow come it’s only 8 in the morning, and I already feel the need for more rum in my nog after reading more on the bushbaby criminal family?
December 21st, 2007 at 8:37 amAs we approach the end of the year, I keep saying to myself well, we are closer to the end of the Most Corrupt Adminstration in the history of this great country. As we wrap gifts, celebrate holidays (Christmas, Chanukah, New Years, Kwanza etc) and “wrap” up another year and we say goodbye to 2007 :
let’s not say goodbye to America’s oldest experiment : Democracy.
I just finished reading Naomi Wolf’s “The End of America” and I cannot recommend this enough for last minute gifts. It’s a wake-up call to what is happening right here in America.
This very much hyped “war of terror” is stripping away our civil liberties on a daily basis. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you will : but 19 Muslims with boxcutters taking down NY’s financial center is another conspiracy.
We must not be complacent. And I’m afraid Cynthia McKinney (The Green Party) has as much chance of winning the presidency as the Pope converting to Judiasm. She’s the only one talking about that Sunny Tuesday morning in September 6 years ago.
And I wonder what was detroyed in the White House fire 2 days ago.
We’ll probably never know.
Thanks for letting me rant and rave. I love my country but fear my gov’t.

December 21st, 2007 at 8:41 amWill someone please inform Bob Woodward? Oh, and please explain to him what phone jamming is.
Comment by Badmoodman — December 20, 2007 @ 8:14 pm
Tell him that it’s kinda like ratfu*king. He should know what that is - he wrote about it during the Watergate scandal.
December 21st, 2007 at 8:47 amAnd so what could the administration be using spying for? Political purposes? Sure seems that could be more than likely.
December 21st, 2007 at 8:52 amWould someone in the NSA please voluntarily hand over the complete contents of all 22 phone calls.

Hmmm… This phone jamming incident happened in 2002, the same year as the CIA interrogations on the tapes that were destroyed.
Coincidence???
December 21st, 2007 at 9:03 amAnyone notice that as soon as another “major” revelation breaks pertaining to the potential criminality of this Administration there seems to be a kind of troll black-out? This thread has been up since last night and is still virtually troll free. I guess they’re waiting for the “powers that be” to give them their marching orders. If any one of them could actually think for themselves and actually had an honest sense of conviction for their lame-assed arguements they would consistently be here defending their bosses. This seems to happen thread after thread. When a topic that has not been previously argued by our trolls suddenly appears, it takes a while for them all to “get their game on” and pollute the threads in their soory attempts to “win the hearts and minds” of us, the witch-hunting moonbat libruls. Fairly mute point anyway as it seems more and more as time passes that their is NO FUTURE for the GOP in this country!

They haven’t heard Hannity’s or Limbaugh’s take on it. As soon as these blowhards find their angle the troops will be marching.
December 21st, 2007 at 9:51 amThe Republicans have definitely failed their shot at the bigtime.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:09 amFor godssakes Rep. Conyers, forget the useless letter writing. You are below the contempt of this administration. We all are. Do not pass Subpoena, Go directly to the Sgt. at Arms of the House. These people are common criminals. Treat them as such.
December 21st, 2007 at 11:18 amSome how, a few million Kerry votes didn’t get counted and a few million bogus Bush votes showed up in the final election tallies and voila, a Bush “victory.â€

For anyone interested, here is the original lawsuit filed in Ohio contesting the stolen election. It details the massive election fraud by the Republicans.
