Huckabee: ‘If Anything,’ We Treat Inmates At Guantanamo Bay ‘Too Nice’»

huckabeeradio.jpgDuring a campaign stop in Iowa today, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee commented on the conditions at the military detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying that “the inmates there were getting a whole lot better treatment” than “prisoners in Arkansas.” “I hope our guys don’t see this,” added Huckabee. “They’ll all want to be transferred to Guanatanmo.”

“If anything, it’s too nice,” said Huckabee:

“The inmates there were getting a whole lot better treatment than my prisoners in Arkansas. In fact, we left saying, ‘I hope our guys don’t see this. They’ll all want to be transferred to Guanatanmo.’ If anything, it’s too nice.”

Huckabee has said Guantanamo is more a “symbolic issue” than anything else since the detainees are treated better than prisoners in the US.

Huckabee, who recently came out in favor of closing Guantanamo, has made similar comparisons in the past.

In June, Huckabee said on CNN’s Late Edition that “most of our prisoners would love to be in a facility more like Guantanamo.” At the time, he said we couldn’t close the facility because hypothetically, “if we let somebody out” they could “come and fly an airliner into one of our skyscrapers.”

Huckabee may have seen “nice” conditions when he visited Guantanamo. But FBI agents who worked at the facility have reported that detainees were subjected to harsh conditions, including “the use of growling dogs” to “intimidate detainees,” at least as recently as 2004:

Detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, were shackled to the floor in fetal positions for more than 24 hours at a time, left without food and water, and allowed to defecate on themselves, an FBI agent who said he witnessed such abuse reported in a memo to supervisors.

A recently released operations manual for the prison, dated March 28, 2003, “indicates that some prisoners were hidden from Red Cross representatives.” Presumably, such “no-access” detainees would have been hidden from visitors like Huckabee as well.

    AS of April 2007, more than 80% of the 385 detainees were being held in isolation, while some detainees are held in solitary confinement at Camp Echo and Camp 5, conditions are worst at Camp 6, which opened in December 2006.

    I don’t care if we are holding them at the Ritz; being held without charge for 5 years is inhumane.

    Frank, youworthlesslittlepussyofaman: Prove there is a bomb-maker among the “detainees”. Just one out of the whole group. You can’t. Know why? No evidence. No trials. The same won’t apply for Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rice, and the other torturers and haters of our Constitutional ideology.

It is an area which we call the Religious Twilight Zone. (Apologies to the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation)

    Franks world makes suspicious = torture and prolonged detention. To him that seems fair. No need for a trial or evidence. no need for due process. no need for that pesky document which many thousands of Americans throughout history have given their lives. No need for a conviction - just suspicion. Our founding fathers would not be proud.

    Many innocents are being held because a rival sect or warlord accepted a bribe from the Americans to rat on them. Shame on you frank. You should know better.

    OT: The ‘no fly’ list has grown to over 100,000 names. Do you truly believe there are that many known terrorists travelling around? Or possibly the bush administration is casting too wide a net and snagging up everybody in their security vaccuum?

    So Huckabee and Frank M believe in that old medieval principle of “guilty until proven innocent”. Most of those guys in Gitmo were sold out by greedy neighbors who were seduced by the reward money. Typical neocon slime.

  44. toasterhead Says:

    The government’s own statistics say that 55% of the detainees were not found to have committed any hostile acts, that only 8% were characterized as al Qaida fighters and that 60% were being detained merely because of alleged association with a persons or groups that the government asserts are terrorist.

    86% of the detainees were handed over to the United States by Pakistan or the Northern Alliance at a time when the United States was widely publicizing its offer of large financial bounties for the capture of suspected enemies.

  48. Shayne Says:

    It seems like the Christian think for Chuclebee to do would have been to go back to Arkansas and see what he could do about improving the prisons there.

    After all he felt so sorry for the guy who raped Bill Clinton’s cousin he worked on getting him released so he could go out and kill two women. Why was he so compassionate toward Wayne Dumond and so apathetic about all the non murderous prisoners in Arkansas? If they had all committed crimes agains the Clinton family maybe they could all get out of prison.

  54. Citizen_of_Earth Says:

    I realize I posted this before in a previous Huckabee thread, but, I just can’t help posting it again…enjoy:

    T’was the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a conservative was stirring, save a neocon mouse;

    The stockings were hung on Chimpy with care, in hopes St. Huckabee would soon be there;

    The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of trust funds danced in their heads;

    Then back in Iraq there arose such a clatter, I turned on the news to see the country get sadder.

    And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof, the prancing and pawing of Larry Craig’s hoof.

    As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, down the chimney St. Huckabee came with a bound.

    He was scary and hump, a right wing old elf, and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.

    A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, soon gave me to know I had a lot to dread;

    His troll like mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the drool on his chin was as white as the snow;

    He spoke not a word, but seemed kind of berserk, and the Bible he’s mocking; oh man, what a jerk,

    And laying his finger aside of his nose, he took a big snort and up the chimney he rose;

    He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, all he wanted was the keys to the missiles.

    But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, vote for me and good-night.”

  55. Shayne Says:

    Or maybe Huckabee needs to go spend a week in the Arkansas prison since he couldn’t be bothered doing anything to make them a civil place compared to Gitmo.

    I just love watching the trolls pull their “rational disconnect” over the Huckster and Hillary.

    They can’t see any, of the many, negatives with the Huckster. Personally, I think he may be more stupid than Bush. He certainly wouldn’t be capable of exerting any real control over those who are far more clever than he is. This includes most people who manage to survive in the cesspool of government.

    With Hillary, on the other hand, they claim they are convinced she’s unelectable, Yet, they are so terrified of her (well, it’s Bill who really scares them) they can’t let a story go by without redirecting it to a “Hillary’s the Devil” discussion.

    I hope they never figure out how ridiculous it makes them appear. At least until the writer’s strike is settled. As it stands now; trolls are the best filler for the “comedy gap”.

    Actually, I am on the LEFT and a CHRISTIAN, who believes in tolerance for the religions of ALL my fellow human beings.

    As far as GODLESS goes, the LIES, MURDER and TORTURE committed and approved by MURDERER Bush the COXUCKER punk TRAITOR to the

    USA show that he does NOT follow the Word of God nor Jesus.

    Nor the FOLLOWERS of this COXUCKER punk TRAITOR to the USA.

    So, WHO does BusHitler follow?

    “the inmates there were getting a whole lot better treatment” than “prisoners in Arkansas.”

    I beg to differ. In Arkansas, rapists can get early release and go on to rape and even murder if one of their victims is distantly related to a Clinton.

  102. Gregor Samsa Says:

    “if we let somebody out” they could “come and fly an airliner into one of our skyscrapers.”

    ::sigh::

    If “we” let anyone out of any prison and/or jail, they could, conceivably, commit again the same crime they were convicted of; including flying an airliner into one of “our” skyscrapers -which not a single detainee in Guantanamo has been charged with.

    Lost on Huckabee is the fact that people are imprisoned for crimes they have actually committed, not the ones they might, probably, potentially, maybe commit in the future.

    I guess Mr. Huckabee is calling for indefinite detention for all inmates currently in the prisons system in the US.

    This comes down to a simple question. Do the basic human rights in the constitution, the right to fair and speedy trial and that your innocent until proven guilty apply to just American Citizens or to other humans as well? Obviously people like frank M don’t think so.

    But this kind of response, though appalling, isn’t entirely unexpected. Fear and war breeds hate. I think this sums it up nicely:

    “For all I’ve seen has changed my mind
    But still the wars go on as the years go by
    With no love of God or human rights
    ‘Cause all these dreams are swept aside

    Personally, I flag people for being way off topic (Hillary’s the Devil in a thread about the Huckster for instance) and gratuitous insults directed at groups.

    I am, however, firmly in favor of directing deserved insults at individuals.

    There is also a select, ever changing, group of names I “flag and ignore”. These are trolls who never add anything to any discussion, get their monikers banned regularly, and are here solely as vandals. If they can’t even provide comic relief, we don’t need ‘em.

    I might add that I would love the opportunity to play poker against these morons. They have no idea how ineffective their “bluffs” are.

    At least as many as trolls. There are even a couple “regulars” who get the “flag and ignore” treatment. I’m kinda old fashioned about fairness and consistency.

    Again, I consider insults in response to abuse, “spamming”, and flat-out lies, to be within the rules. And, of course, If one takes a statement directed at “trolls” as a personal attack; I suggest you change your affiliation.

    I also allow a little leeway to attacks which separate “Republicriminals” and the many good, though deluded, people who still identify themselves as Republicans. Funny thing there. Most self-described Republicans I know are committed to voting against the neocon criminals who have seized control of the, once proud, GOP.

    BTW, I didn’t flag your “Hillary’s the Devil” comment.

    Dang! I missed this one.

    The problem is that when our leaders, those who represent us to the World, challenge the most immoral regimes in history; it’s impossible for the morality of our citizenry to reach others.

    Not to mention Iraq. The only way they could ever be considered “moral”, by the Reich-wingers, is to abandon their own moral code, culture, and religion. And forgive us for destroying their nation.

    But hey! Don’t worry. The morality of our citizenry will soon banish the neocons to the dark chapters of history. Who knows? Our great-grandkids might be able to travel the world in friendship once again. (Forgive me, however, if I don’t hold my breath.)

    With the FISA bill still looming in the Senate, and a new war funding bill passed with no structure in place to Bring our Troops Home, we have to show the leaders of the House and Senate that this is still our country.

    those who oppose Guantanamo bay, should at least oppose it for the right reasons. The “facts” that people post on these boards are inaccurate and inconsistent with the way that GTMO is run. i know on a first hand basis that there is no torture here (since i have been involved here) and 80% of detainees are not kept in isolation. the only thing wrong with GTMO is the commissions process and trials. i believe that each detainee needs time in front of the judge (which is taking far too long) to see evidence and determine whether they are unlawful or not. if these men are guilty then they have made out better than any prisoner in the states. if they are innocent then i do feel remorse for them and their families that have suffered, but at least they are alive, safe, and healthy. that is my two cents
