At the end of her press conference this morning, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice teamed up with “secular progressives” in the War on Christmas, cheerily wishing reporters a “Happy Holidays everybody!” Watch it:
With only four days left to win the war this year, the right wing should be in panic mode. Yesterday, President Bush wished reporters “Happy Holidays” as well.
UPDATE: No mention of Christmas in Bush’s holiday message to the troops either.
On behalf of a grateful Nation, Laura and I send our best wishes for the holidays.
In this season of giving, we remember our duty to others, and we see that sense of duty fulfilled in the men and women who wear our Nation’s uniform. Our country owes you a debt of gratitude for your courage and resolve to serve the cause of peace. Americans are proud of your dedicated service, and I am proud to be the Commander in Chief of the greatest force for freedom in the history of the world.
Our Nation is thankful for the many sacrifices you and your families make every day. During the holidays and throughout the coming year, we ask the Almighty to bestow His protection and care on you and your loved ones. We pray for your safety and for liberty, justice, and peace on Earth.
Laura and I wish you a joyful holiday season. May God bless you, and may God continue to bless America.

This ought to make Bildo’s head explode.
Unless he conveniently ignores it…
December 21st, 2007 at 12:08 pmSeems like Bill O. declared “mission accomplished” in the War on Christmas too soon. There are insurgents at the highest levels of the American government.

December 21st, 2007 at 12:13 pmOK, OK — I think we all get the point that the Bush team isn’t going to play Bill O’Reilly’s little game. More power to them for not stooping that low.
However, I don’t think it would be all that improper for the President to issue an actual Christmas message with the sentiment “Merry Christmas.” After all, he issues similar greetings for Jewish and other holidays, specifically FOR those holidays. Surely Christmas is celebrated by enough Americans that the holiday could get a little recognition?
I’m not going all “bill-o” here — just pointing out that equal time wouldn’t be a bad thing.
December 21st, 2007 at 12:14 pmCan somebody explain this concept of a “war on Christmas” to the people (like me who don’t understand it?
I thought that showing everyone how faithful you are by saying things like Merry Christmas and “Jesus is Great” was a popular thing for politicians to do.

December 21st, 2007 at 12:20 pmIt should be said that I do appreciate the administration’s gesture of inclusion.
The fact that the Bush Administration can be so reasonable as to accept the fact that the US is made up of many different faiths and creeds, not just Christians, demonstrates how silly the hysterical rantings of O’Really, Gibson and the “War on Christmas” crowd really are.

Juan C. and Buckie made good responses to your question, missmolly. But it’s pretty clear to em that the “War on Christmas” is being waged by Faux News bobbleheads for two reasons:
one, it is exactly the kind of papier maché crusade that will stoke outrage in the lower-functioning members of society, who happen to form the core demographic group to which these shows appeal, and
two, the conditions of reason one add up to money for the sponsors of the crusade.

December 21st, 2007 at 12:51 pmIn my opinion, the “War on Christmas” is just another way for the right-wing to play the victim. They want to pretend like Christians are somehow a persecuted minority in the USA. So they’ll ignore the fact that every store and every town in our country are filled with Christmas decorations.
Right-wingers are always using this victim card. They do the same thing with prayer in public schools. They ignore the fact that there are Christian private schools all over the country, and Christian churches everywhere, and instead play the victim card to pretend like their kids are not allowed to be Christian.
It’s the same tactic media figures like those on Fox News want to portray the mainstream media as being liberal. They want to portray the right-wing as victims of the “liberal media”.
They do the same on environmental issues. They play the victim card, and claim there’s a liberal bias in the scientific community against the deniers of global warming.
They do the same with US colleges/universities. They play the victim card and claim those evil liberals are teaching kids propaganda on every college campus in the country.
They even play the victim card on immigration issues. They’ll argue how those evil illegal immigrants are stealing all our jobs, despite the fact that we have very little unemployment in our country.
Shows like Bill O’Reilly’s are basically one big victim card if you really analyze them.

Is it just me, or are these “wars” manufactured purely to provoke outrage getting sillier and sillier?
We had the war against gays — particularly gays who wanted to marry. We were told that this would destroy the institution of marriage.
We had the war against flag-burning, despite the fact that there was no widespread flag-burning anywhere. Who knew our flag was so weak that it needs legislation to protect it?
Now we have the war against Christmas. I have absolutely no idea what’s supposed to happen to us if we lose this one.
So what’s the next manufactured war gonna be? Words of foreign origin creeping their way into English? Or something even more stupid?
