Joe Klein Gives Huckabee Political Courage Award, Ignores His Backtracking On Immigration

In his new Time column, Joe Klein hands out “Teddy Awards” — in honor of Theodore Roosevelt — to figures who have “performed honorably” in the public arena. One of his “honorable mention” recipients? Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, for his supposedly strong position supporting undocumented immigrants:

Mike Huckabee gets an honorable mention for standing by his position in favor of scholarships to public colleges for illegal immigrants who do well in high school. “We never should grind our heel in the face of a child” is a sentiment that should go without saying, but needed to be said to his Republican colleagues.

The problem with Klein’s endorsement is that Huckabee has largely abandoned his scholarships plan. It’s true that as Arkansas governor, Huckabee supported providing college assistance to undocumented immigrants.

But early this month, Huckabee announced his Secure America plan, which would require all 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States to leave within 120 days. Those who failed to do so would “face deportation if arrested and would be barred from re-entering the U.S. for 10 years.” (It’s awfully tough to get a college education if you’re forced to leave the country.)

Additionally, Huckabee recently received the endorsement of Jim Gilchrist, president of the right-wing anti-immigrant Minuteman Project.

Perhaps Klein had “neither the time nor legal background” to look into Huckabee’s record.

Klein didn’t take the time because he is a very lazy journalist. He’s also someone who tries to convince people that he is somewhat liberal when he really is a neoCON in his heart. He’s kind of like those trolls who come here and try to act like they are a concerned liberal and then start spouting the RNC talking points. It’s time for Klein to give up journalism. Maybe there’s a good job waiting for him as a lobbyist.

MILFORD, N.H. – The Concord Monitor broke with political tradition Sunday, telling readers in the state with the first presidential primary why they should not vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney instead of whom they should support.

In a scathing anti-endorsement that called Romney a “disquieting figure,” the New Hampshire newspaper’s editorial board said he looks and acts like a presidential contender but “surely must be stopped” because he lacks the core philosophical beliefs to be a trustworthy president.

He’s a very popular candidate, with the populists amongst the Right-Wing, and actually may stand a chance at the nomination.

However, IMO, he would ultimately be a very weak candidate in a general election.

I personally think that it’s very stupid for TP, or any other Liberal blog, to bash Huckabee. If nominated, he could be gift from heaven, come election time.

  10. TexasB says:

Joe Klein is an odd man. Definitely not living in the reality based world.

How about we at TP bash all the reichwing Repukelickin candidates.
It’s only fair, since they are such a raggedy bunch of Bush lickers.

  12. JPV says:

Also, what is the problem with TP, and most Liberals in general, where the don’t seem to be able to understand the distinction between LEGAL immigrants and ILLEGAL immigrants.

    I find this immensely annoying.

  13. TexasB says:

JPV, overstaying a visa, which is how many immigrants become “illegal” is a misdemeanor. Not a major crime. They’re immigrants. They live here now. Let’s look at how our country’s politics affected their ability to earn a living back home before condemning anyone for how they arrived or how long they are staying.

Where are we confusing undocumented with undocumented again?

Or how about how it affects OUR ability to earn a living here?

Meanwhile I can’t get a visa for my Romanian girlfriend, unless I marry her.

    Is this double standard fair?

Then focus on all aspects of immigration policy, including the number of visas allowed from each country. But don’t blame “the illegals” for your GF’s situation.

How does illegal immigration affect your ability to earn a living? Are you picking fruit for a living? Doing yardwork?

As to your girlfriend, no, it’s not fair. Much of life isn’t fair, but the presence of Central Americans cutting meat in a huge pork processing plant is unlikely to have had anything to do with her situation.

It was just a valid observation on my part, and that’s all.

And I do. Come to think of it, I’m not sure I even blame them. It’s an incredibly complicated issue that’s been in the making for decades, and finally coming to fruition. Whattamess…

It’s only fair, since they are such a raggedy bunch of Bush lickers.

My thought is that there is no need to bother bashing them. None of them have a chance against any Democrat in ‘08. Better we spend our time talking about important issues that are being ignored by the MSM and yet are extremely important to our country beginning in 2009.

For instance, there is an important post today over on The DailyKos talking about the power of the executive. Its called:

“Candidates on executive power: a full spectrum
They assess use of signing statements
By Charlie Savage, Boston Globe Staff”

The Globe asked the candidates in both parties for the answers to various questions. The answers are revealing and extremely important to know. I.e., do we want a president who believes like BushCo on executive power, signing statements and secrecy?

Issues like this that get to the heart of the next president are what need to be discussed, and the info spread far and wide so the public can vote more intelligently.

Wasting time bashing repukes that will not become even dog catchers in the next administration is fun, I admit, but a serious waste of important, and valuable, time.

Not quite sure what your point is.

The point being that the scions of the party that claims to protect us from illegals are the very ones that profit from exploiting a class of workers without any rights, to drive down labor costs for us all.

We don’t have an illegal immigration problem. We have an illegal employer problem.

Spot on! This cuts through all the superfluous distracting arguments and addresses the real problem. The greed of the corporations, backed and pushed by neocons and DLC Democrats driving the creation of NAFTA, CAFTA etc. But we can’t talk about that, can we? (Are you saying that capitalism is bad?!!! What are you? Some kine of commie sympathizer?)

  31. pete says:

Actually, there’s no such thing as an “illegal immigrant”. Immigration is the definition of legally establishing residence in the country. Illegal entry would classify them as “illegal aliens”. Why have these terms become confused? My guess is that it’s thinly veiled xenophobia and the wish, of many, to keep America “pure”. If there are still neocons in 20 years, they won’t bother with the “illegal” at all. Everyone will just be enemies.

  33. The Republic of Stupidity says:

This is from a letter I just found over at Salon:

“Despite being called a republic, (indeed the official name of Mexico is Estados Unidos de Mexico), with a democratic government styled after our own, Mexico is actually a defacto oligarchy, run by 19 families of billionaires who manipulate every aspect of the federal, state and local governments of Mexico. It is one of the most corrupt systems of government the world has ever seen. Bribery and mortal intimidation are the tools of this oligarchy to remain in power.”

I would think the only real solution to this situation lines in reforming the mexican economy, which in turn means reforming the oligarchies and the multi-national corps that benefit from the current status quo.

Some years ago I read an article about the “American aristocracy”. The author pointed out how many, non elected, government positions are, to all intents and purposes, hereditary. It was amazing how many of the “behind the scenes” players are direct descendants of the “Founding Fathers”.

I’m not certain we’re very different from Mexico.

I share some of your concerns. However, I think that stiffening, and enforcing, rules against employers would be the best first step. This would include very severe penalties; up to, and including, having the business seized and auctioned off. So long as the perceived benefits outweigh the penalties little will change.

HEY TP… ARE YOU GOING TO POST THIS RETRACTION?

    http://themedium.blogs.nytimes.com/ 2007/ 12/ 26/ editors-note-the-ron-paul-vid-lash/

Editors’ Note: The Ron Paul Vid-Lash

    By The New York Times

A post in The Medium that appeared on Monday about the Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul and his purported adoption by white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups contained several errors. Stormfront, which describes itself as a “white nationalist” Internet community, did not give money to Ron Paul’s presidential campaign; according to Jesse Benton, a spokesman for Paul’s campaign, it was Don Black, the founder of Stormfront, who donated $500 to Paul. The original post also repeated a string of assertions by Bill White, the commander of the American National Socialist Workers Party, including the allegation that Paul meets regularly “with members of the Stormfront set, American Renaissance, the Institute for Historic Review and others” at a restaurant in Arlington, Va. Paul never attended these dinners, according to Benton, who also says that Paul has never knowingly met Bill White. Norman Singleton, a congressional aide in Paul’s office, says that he met Bill White at a dinner gathering of conservatives several years ago, after which Singleton expressed his indignation at the views espoused by White to the organizer of the dinner. The original post should not have been published with these unverified assertions and without any response from Paul.
