    Happy Holidays, Faiz. :-)

  2. Faiz Says:

    Thanks Zooey. Same to you!

  3. thejoshuablog Says:

Good work, TP! Happy & healthy.

  4. Jason M. Hendler Says:

Notice these are all things that merely smear the right, as opposed to any tangible successes by the left. I would have thought raising CAFE standards might have made the list, as it is the only real success the left has had this year.

  5. Wayne Says:

Happy holidays and New Year Faiz (and the rest of the staff )

Keep up the good work =)

  6. Badmoodman Says:

Popular, meaning number of responses? Sadly, the posts with the most responses typically devolve into ad infinitum flamethrowing and name calling after about 75 responses.

    Was the egg nog good?
    Extra Brandy in the mix?

  8. Faiz Says:

Badmoodman, “popular” was defined as the posts that had the greatest number of incoming visitors directly to that hyperlink.

  9. gummitch Says:

No one has to “smear” the Right; they do a fine job all on their own. Pointing it out isn’t “smearing”.

Then again, your ability to keep up has never been too good.

  10. gummitch Says:

Happy Holidays, Faiz. Thanks for going to work while most of us are kicking it at home.

Pointing out how the right launched a smear campaign agaisnt a 12 year old recipient of the SCHIP and his family is not “smearing the right”.

It’s that thing the rest of us calls reality. You should try it some time.

  12. Uncle Ho Says:

JMH; Take a break, you don’t have to be a prick EVERY day.

That said, Merry Christmas to all.

    Someone’s got a union job!

My kid has to work tonight. No extra pay but with luck there will be a ton of good tips.

  16. Wayne Says:

Well thats what you get for being a Deist, lol.

    :D

Hope you’re at least having fun.

    Comment by BARTLEBEE — December 25, 2007 @ 1:48 pm

Yeah, Christmas day is slow, but management wantsus here when those new computers are opened and they burp rather than work =)

And Diest seems to fit me more than Agnostic or Athiest, for sure.

    The unofficial tenets of Deism:

    1. Belief in God based on Reason, Experience and Nature (nature of the universe) rather than on the basis of pure faith, holy texts and divine revelation. Essentially, through the use of Reason, God’s existence is revealed by the observation of the order and complexity found within nature and our personal experiences.

    2. Belief that the nature of God is generally incomprehensible and is beyond definition for humanity at this time. Furthermore, human language is limited and inadequate to define God; however, man can use Reason to theorize and speculate on what this possible nature is.

    3. Belief that mans relationship with God is impersonal and abstract. However, this does not create a feeling of a distant and cold deity but of one in which God has a profound and unfathomable relationship with all of creation (nature) rather than just one aspect of it.

    4. Belief that humanity has the ability to use Reason to develop ethical/moral principles and through the application of Reason these principles can be used to implement moral behavior, which in turn creates a Utilitarian-Humanist morality. Essentially, humans can be guided by their conscience in matters of morality.

    5. Belief that humans have the individual capability of experiencing God, which is defined as spirituality. These spiritual experiences are multi-faceted and all of humanity has the innate capability to have these experiences. Essentially, each human is capable of having a profound experience of God and nature.

    6. Belief that God should be honored in a way that the individual believes is best and most appropriate for them. Individuals must determine for themselves how best to honor God and only they can develop how to accomplish this. For many, it is a multi-faceted and an individualized process.

    7. Belief in the principle of Natural Law that states that all men and women are created equal to each other with inherent freedom and liberty so that no human has more worth than another. Essentially, each human is equal in terms of the freedoms that they have and in the eyes of the law.

    8. Belief that mankind’s purpose is to use our God-given reason to understand what it means to be alive in every sense of the word (to live life to the fullest) and to act in such a way as to secure human happiness and contentment for all involved.

    9. Belief that Reason and Respect are God-given traits to mankind and that we are to utilize them in all aspects of our daily lives thus creating a pragmatic approach to life. This includes respecting other alternative views and opinions of God (other religions) as long as they do not produce harm and/or infringe upon others.

  17. Wayne Says:

One thing we can all do today is send a message to our men and women serving (whether or not you believe in the war) to thank them for their service to this country.

Also, you can send letters to the wounded:
    http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/ americasupportsyou/ wounded_letters.html

  18. ShamRockNRoll Says:

Newsflash to Jason Hendler: Reporting on the idiotic stuff the right does is not “smearing” them… it is telling the truth.

But of course, “it is a well known fact that reality has a liberal bias.”

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

  19. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Happy Holidays, faiz, and all of the Think Progress staff. Thanks for all the upgrades this year. Keep up the great work.

‘tude like that doesn’t win wars pal.

  22. ucsbclassics53 Says:

Awwwwww, poor Jason plays the victim card…you know the card the wingnuts claim that the truly oppressed are playing, while playing it themselves. It’s one of the worst kinds of hypocrisy…

  23. Juan C. Says:

    Hey, Happy Holidays, everybody.

Thanks for all the info, the laughs and the head-ups.

  24. dixie blood Says:

    TP,

You need to take into account that you changed your blogging rules during this time period.

    Registration occured.

Also, your editorial focus changes. IE. The last 2 weeks no Sunday Bloody Kristol comments. That’s got to make a diff, right? You’ve laid off religion too!

Your list is really not useful.

  25. pete Says:

Peace and joy have been in short supply for many people around the world. And, it’s difficult to see how things will be brighter in the coming year. But, there’s lots of hope.

America seems on the cusp of a great change. Our society has produced so many great people, both famous and unknown, I’ll stack up our ideals against any civilization in history. Hard choices are in front of us and I think the we have the courage, and resolve, to make them.

So, I urge you all to look in your hearts. Look back at what our nation has been, and forward to what it yet can be. Look to those things we share with others instead of what sets us apart. Judge fairly and in kindness. Learn from the crises we now face and the mistakes of those who came before us. The future can’t happen without our wisdom and participation.

And if you feel hopeless please remember what people, united in peace, have accomplished. Don’t look for leaders to do it for us. The world has suffered many dark times and always it’s been simple folk, citizens of many places and times, who have driven the darkness away. Indeed, if one stands tall, with eyes wide open, the world does not seem so dark. Good intentions have brought low more evil than ill will has created.

If you still don’t know what to do? Offer a prayer, a chant, a spell, incantation, or just a heartfelt wish:

Peace and joy to one and all!

BTW, the cult of Sol Invictus called. They want their Holy Day back.

  27. Chris L Says:

Merry Christmas TP!! And to all TP friends!!!

  28. Nevar Says:

JESUS CHRIST is the reason for the season!

    Error…

Due to the Earths inclination on it’s axis, we experience seasons.

Jesus just happened to pop in around the winter solstice, and blow out over spring break.

  30. pete Says:

Does anyone know how many homes, and people, are burned each year due to the co-opting of “evergreen worship”?

  31. Nevar Says:

Or how many suffer grievous puncture wounds from tipping backwards into the Christmas cactus?

  32. Zooey Says:

Has that become a problem for you, Nevar? :-)

Thank you, that just about sums it up for me. Mine and my daughters Christmas memories can’t ever be taken away. Let’s just make ‘Happy Holidays’ include all good people for whatever reason you like. Tomorrow the bad people will force me back into battle.

  34. pete Says:

    Comment by wisedup — December 25, 2007 @ 7:09 pm

If the “bad” people had peace and joy; would they still be “bad”?

  35. bilbobaggins Says:

    Happy Holidays everyone.

Peace and prosperity are possible as long as we don’t give up and keep up the good fight. May the new year be filled with accountability and action.

  36. Nevar Says:

Has that become a problem for you, Nevar? :-)

Thank the gods for the potato, a hefty chunk taped to the afflicted area overnight will draw the spine out.
    Sometimes two nights……..

Or how many suffer grievous puncture wounds from tipping backwards into the Christmas cactus?

    Comment by Nevar — December 25, 2007 @ 7:03 pm

Oddly enough, one of my favorite Christmas memories stems from a Christmas Eve spent camping in the Sonora Desert. My mother placed candles on the “prickly pears”. No casualties.

  38. Nevar Says:

I spent last Christmas in the Sonoran desert, pete, and passed out goodies to the towhees and the thrashers hanging around my camp.

Being a wildland firefighter, it never occurred to me to put incendiary devices on the cactus….

Bless those parents and elders of ours who had a sense of humor, creativity, and perhaps a little wildness to share with us.

  39. Lefty Patriot Says:

New crack pipe for Xmas, Bart? or extra booze in the eggnog? Well, enjoy your shiny new Deist belief system, in spite of yourself.

    Comment by Nevar — December 25, 2007 @ 7:33 pm

Don’t worry, the candles were in those pear-shaped glass “lanterns”, red and green, which are so common on the tables of Mexican restaurants. Plus, I’m sure that Dad was on fire watch.

And, while my parents were wise, humorous, and creative,; they were conventional in most ways. Though, I have little doubt they would identify themselves with those who have assumed the title “conservative”.

As for spending Christmas in the desert, our family took any opportunity to get out of San Diego. Even back in the 60’s it just wasn’t our style. In fact, we soon moved to rural Minnesota where our nearest neighbors were over a mile away. I despise urban areas to this day.

  41. RUCerious Says:

My thanks and congrats to the TP staff, one and all for a fine job in 07, let’s celebrate the 08~!

  42. RUCerious Says:

  53. Zooey Says:

I figured that would be the inevitable result. :-D

  54. Sabyen91 Says:

LOL, unless you are a Republican. It isn’t like we are talking about little boys.

  55. Zooey Says:

Yeah, it’s always perversion with the uptight wingnuts.

  56. Zooey Says:

    Nice Christmas, JP?

  59. Sabyen91 Says:

Here in WI I was really happy it didn’t snow. It has already been a heavy year. My driveway has too much ice as it is. Enjoy yourself with your kid!

  60. Sabyen91 Says:

  65. creasybear Says:

Happy Ho Ho Ho to Y’all. Faiz, the entire TP Crew and bloggers.
But TP didn’t mention that the smear against Obama was all from H’LIARy camp? And that she collected funds from TP’s biggest “Satan” : FOX Mud-roach. Common TP, 2008 is just less than a week away.
    We want 100% unbiased reports.
Time for 100% PP (Positive Progress).

  66. Marie Says:

Thanks, TP for providing the news and an outlet for us to express our opinions. It’s an uphill climb to battle the rightwing nuts and their dominance of the media, but the blogosphere is gaining ground; I hope 2008 brings a change for the better in politics and policies for America.

  67. tom Says:

While we’re wishing each other “happy holidays”, here’s a funny greeting I got from a republican friend:

    TO ALL MY DEMOCRATIC FRIENDS:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an envioronmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creeed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

    TO ALL MY REPUBLICAN FRIENDS;

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

  68. Marie Says:

You have an unusually witty republican friend — most of those who hang out here have no sense of humor or irony. Satire excapes them entirely.

  69. evil_framers_of_the_constitution Says:

#82 - I saw that posted on another forum…for guitar amps of all things. It must be the wrong-wing official email fo the season.

  70. dbadass Says:

It is interesting that the Virginia Tech massacre didn’t even make it into the TP top 10, but someone calling someone else a name makes #1.

    Comment by good_golly — December 26, 2007 @ 10:47 am

Well it’s to be expected in a nation that has a boner about firearms. So is your point that Coulter is a dumb twat or that she is a dumb twat that calls people rude names and lowers the political discourse?

  71. dbadass Says:

When left wing nut jobs give up on their conspiracy theories and join the real world.

    Comment by good_golly — December 26, 2007 @ 3:03 pm

Why are the VA Tech shooting so important?

  72. dbadass Says:

Does anyone think that John Edwards is really straight? If so, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

    Comment by Manslagt — December 26, 2007 @ 3:19 pm

I think he is straight but I am not in the bridge market at this time. What difference would it make if he wasn’t?

  73. dbadass Says:

    Comment by Manslagt — December 26, 2007 @ 3:50 pm

Since “for one” seems innane why don’t we go with “for two”

  74. dbadass Says:

What you think is probably not relevant. I think most people might be more interested in his experience and positions on issues. I hope so at least. He isn’y my candidate but I can’t really follow your point. Do you think voters have an imagined effeminate scale that they factor in? If so… How is the girliest GOPster? I go with repressed homo godboy Romney! What do think? Am I getting your pont now?

  75. Marie Says:

We have another sad milestone: 3900 soldiers have died in Iraq.
