Senate blocks recess appointment of torture advocate.»

AP reports:

A nine-second session gaveled in and out by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., prevented Bush from appointing as an assistant attorney general a nominee roundly rejected by majority Democrats. Without the pro forma session, the Senate would be technically adjourned, allowing the president to install officials without Senate confirmation. […]

Democrats wanted to block one such recess appointment in particular: Steven Bradbury, acting chief of the Justice Department’s Office of Legislative Counsel.
Bush nominated Bradbury for the job and asked the Senate to remove the “acting” in his title.

Democrats would have none of it, complaining Bradbury had signed two secret memos in 2005 saying it was OK for the CIA to use harsh interrogation techniques — some call it torture — on terrorism detainees.

More on Bradbury’s nomination HERE.

Score one for keeping the senate open.
What will the petulant boy-king do about this?
Try out his new biking outfit and work up a sweat, then come back and try more back-door schemes.

  2. Marie Says:

BTW, sorry to be off topic, but does anyone think Bush will have a White House wedding this summer and gain a few “sentimental” votes?

  3. gummitch Says:

    Yay, Webb!

And, by golly, yay Reid, for making sure this happened. Nicely played.

I wonder when the Republics will start whining about Democrats cheating?

  4. Marie Says:

There is a sad milestone today: 3,900 soldiers have died in Iraq. It is not being reported on the msm news.

  5. ccokz Says:

without the session, the senate would not be technically adjourned!

    Fists up!

  6. Coffins Draped with a Flag Says:

Webb keeps get picked to do these sessions because he lives the closest to DC. Good for Webb.

Marie - the msm doesn’t cover the number of coffins draped with flags that return from Iraq. It’s sad and it’s disrespectful to the military and their families.

  7. RUCerious Says:

Reid/Webb, finally a solution to recess cronyism.

  8. Coffins Draped with a Flag Says:

gummitch - the Republicans are working on damage control. I live in the PA 17th but my address is in the PA 6 which has a Republican Congressman, Jim Gerlach. He is trying desperately to suck up to his constituents. Gerlach will be retired by the voters in 2008. He has some flagged draped coffins to explain.

  9. Veritas Says:

It’s beginning to look like Jim Webb is one of the few Democratic patriots we have in Congress! Good job! We certainly couldn’t count on Reid/Pelosi to do this for us.

  10. celtic cynic Says:

Methinks the “acting” president should be removed.

  11. Willy Says:

Maybe the boy King can get the Supreme Court to rule that nine-second Congressional sessions are “unconstitutional”.

9 seconds? what a missed opportunity. I would have so much more fun with it. Put out a Bill for debate to make me Emperor of the US for a day with no one there to second it.

Trot out a resolution declaring Pringles “delicious”.

  13. republicanSScareme Says:

The Bushkies are rushing to protect and promote all the slimeballs who did King Dubya’s bidding.

I wonder how many ten dollar thugs are going to trial after Bush leaves office…?

  14. Shayne Says:

When Senator Webb was asked if he’d like to rund for Vice President he stated that he has too much work to do in the Senate. And he just showed us an example. What a guy!

  15. Shayne Says:

And I forgot, as somebody who voted for Senator Obama I would have appreciated him taking his responsibilities as a senator a little more seriously.

  16. GSD Says:

The media has written off the war, lest they be accused of being anti-MURKIN.

Bravo to the senate for blocking Commander Fudgestains authoritarian lackeys.

  17. Krazny Says:

I think Bush is probably spitting nails over this, he doesn’t like it when he doesn’t get his way.

  18. bimplebean Says:

Nicely done. It’s about time the Democrats used parliamentary tricks to block the Republicans. Too bad it took so long.

Of course, if they did their job, they would be disrespectful to BushCo. Can’t have that, can we!

The petulent little git was probably fuming as he quaffed the holiday fare, scheming how he’ll get back at the murkin people for their presumptiousness in temporarily halting another of his nefarious schemes.

Really makes you glad that George Allen had his “macaca moment”, doesn’t it? God knows Feinstein et al wouldn’t get off their asses for the rule of law or for the Constitution.

  22. kassandrasduplex Says:

JIM WEBB IS A MODERN AMERICAN HERO. He is a man who has consistently spoken truth to power and it will be sad to see if he pays for that bravery some time down the road.
He hasn’t been afraid to take on Israel and the Zionists in the past either.

  23. kassandrasduplex Says:

Off topic but interesting: Project Censored has Feinstein’s conflict of interests listed as number 23 (I think) wherein she has consistently been supporting war funding because her hubby’s company has war contracts worth millions.

  25. rockyroad Says:

    Off topic but so nice.

Today, I drove thru a blizzard to the Humane Society, asked which dogs had been there longest and landed home with an Alaskan Malamute-Lab mix and a Chihuahua, add those to my two Silky Terriers, we’ve practically got a soccer team!

It’s one small way to deminish my foot print. This year, I’m not rich, but I have home in my home for two dogs that were living, unloved, on 3×10 concrete. We all deserve better.

Love and xxx’s from Yahoo, Wookie, Sadie and Sprite!

  26. Coffins Draped with a Flag Says:

rockyroad - thanks for providing homes to these dogs. I rescued a cat that was heading for the big sleep.

  30. gummitch Says:

Moonbats should rethink opposing every damn thing GW, our President, asks this do nothing, most unpopular congress ever, to do. He was just voted on the USA Today Gallup poll as “THE MOST ADMIRED MAN IN AMERICA FOR 2007″

    Comment by BERT CONVY — December 26, 2007 @ 8:27 pm

That sounded pretty weird until I actually looked at the information. Dubya got a whopping 10%!

When people were asked to name the man they most admire, 10 percent picked Bush, his lowest figure in the seven years he has been president. Bill Clinton got 8 percent — within the poll’s margin of sampling error — while Nobel Prize laureate and former Vice President Al Gore, Bush’s opponent in the 2000 presidential election, had 6 percent and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, a current presidential candidate, was chosen by 5 percent.

Whoever has been president has won the most-admired title every year since 1981.

If Bert learned to read, he might not post such incriminating information about his leader.

LOL on that one, ya moron.

Hey Bert, why didn’t you mention that Hillary came in first in the “Most Admired Woman” poll?

    http://firedoglake.com/ 2007/ 12/ 26/ hillary-clinton-wins-cnns-most-admired-woman-poll/

She got 18% and the boywhowouldbeking only got 10% What a loser bush is!

  33. nofltwlt Says:

And when the Senate returns to session please impeach our little woodenhead president and his evil vice president. Cheney as put the VICE in vice president.

  34. abarts Says:

    Webb lives here in NoVA.
Personally, I think Pelosi and Reid should have had to do it.

  35. pete Says:

Nothing serves to demonstrate the sad state of our government like the fact that Congress deems it necessary to take such measures to thwart the President. What’s next?

  36. Jackie Says:

This is an example of how low the US has gone. We the people don’t stand up and kick George out of office. We have to have Law Makers spend their holidays in the job to stop the President from committing criminal acts. What an example of this once great country. It’s like having someone what parents with their kids because they can’t be trusted.

  37. cal1942 Says:

“We certainly couldn’t count on Reid/Pelosi to do this for us.

    Comment by Veritas”

As Senate Majority leader, Reid set up the mechanism to keep the Senate in session not Webb.

This was also done to cover the Thanksgiving recess.

    “Webb lives here in NoVA.
Personally, I think Pelosi and Reid should have had to do it.

    Comment by abarts”

Keeping Reid back would have been a hell of a waste of resources.

Good for you, rockyroad. Three of my four cats were rescued , and I recently started walking a mini-Daschund once a week for a wheelchair-bound woman.

Thank you so much for your support.

    This is disgusting.

Either our democratic leaders are against torture or they aren’t. This isn’t semantics, it’s just pain English. Is it to much to expect for our leaders to speak English? If it is, they can’t lead me.

I want a leader who recognizes torture, can call it by its name and does condmen it.

Clinton can’t. Can Obama? Edwards, where are you?

  42. rockyroad Says:

    Bradbury . . . bloo-ha-ha.

Uhh, Bert, THE MOST ADMIRED WOMAN IN AMERICA FOR 2007 (TM) was Hillary. You agree, I take it?

  47. Sabyen91 Says:

“Keeping Reid back would have been a hell of a waste of resources.”

Why? The Stormin’ Mormon has done nothing but bend over for the the Republicans since he came into his leadership role. He and Pelosi think they are still in the minority. Their Stockholm Syndrome is truly pathetic. It would be sad if it didn’t affect everybody in the US (now it is beyond sad. It is a disaster).
