The number of Americans who, as of 1:00 PM today, have signed on to Rep. Robert Wexler’s (D-FL) online petition demanding congressional impeachment hearings for Vice President Dick Cheney. Last week, Wexler told Ed Schultz that he launched his website after traditional media outlets rejected an op-ed he had written with his colleagues Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). Today, the Philadelphia Inquirer ran Wexler’s op-ed outlining why he believes impeachment hearings are necessary.

The reality is that Conyers said on a Democracy Now interview that he will still not allow the impeachment hearings in the Judicial Committee.

He knows that Pelosi will use her authority to strike it down regardless of what they come up with in the committee.

We need to get Pelosi out of her seat as Speaker of the House…

And that “suspicion” of yours is just that — only a suspicion, unless you can come up with some evidence to back it up.

This is a typical tactic people employ when data comes along that contradicts their position. They simply diss the data.

Even IF Wexler’s petition consisted only of a lot of fake e-mails, how do you explain the poll results from American Research Group that claims 70% believe Cheney has abused his power to some degree and 43% want him gone now (the strongest position against him from the list of choices)? Was it a fake poll?

Check this out, and scroll to the bottom…

    http://americanresearchgroup.com/

By all means, if you have some evidence that suggests that most Americans absolutely love and respect Cheney, think that he is doing a wonderful job, and see no reason whatsoever to investigate anything he’s done, go ahead and provide it.

Ret. Col. Jack Ripper, yes I had heard that. That’s pretty strange.

I think we are seeing a lot of compensating for inadequacies coming from this administration. Iraq for example, is in a lot of ways Bush’s feeble attempt to overcome a life of failure. Instead, it reinforced the fact that he is a failure.

I am no psychologist, so I lead with “I think” and leave it at the level of opinion.

  41. Kane Says:

The tragedy of impeachment hearings being off the table is that the public will never learn the entire truth and facts surrounding the many scandals of the Bush Administration.

Just as President Ford put a halt to the Watergate investigation, and President Clinton pushed under the rug the investigations of Iran-Contra, “Iraqgate” and the “October Surprise” case, today’s scandals will soon become unresolved. And those of us who will continue to point out the crimes of Bush/Cheney, we will eventually be painted as paranoid conspiracy theorists.

‘Cause I sure don’t see the reference.

And if “making outrageous statements that have no factual basis” is an indication of homosexuality, then you might want to accuse pretty much all of the Bush Administration.

He will NOT allow impeachment hearings to take place.

Conyers knows that Pelosi will undercut the efforts of impeachment rather than helping to build a bi-partisan coalition to impeach.

Conyers knows that Pelosi will again be Speaker of the House next year and she will take him off the Judiciary Committee if he goes against her wishes. It’s a “lose-lose” for him and impeachment.

Let’s help him and the rest of the members of the House of Representatives by removing an obstructionist Speaker. It can be done and must be done to start the impeachment process.

    Wrong on three points.

    1. Robert Wexler does not appear to exhibit effeminate characteristics, behavior contrary to traditional male gender roles, or a lack of courage. In fact, by so unabashedly taking on the face-shooting vice president, I would argue that he is exhibiting tremendous courage indeed.
    2. Although Rahm Emmanuel did take ballet lessons as a child and was offered a scholarship for his dance skills, he was never a ballerina. Male ballet dancers are referred to as ballerinos.
    3. Faiz Shakir (whose name means “victorious thankfulness” in Arabic) has not supported al-Qa’ida or any other group on the U.S. State Department terror list in any post I’ve seen to date.

Manslagt would just rather forget the little shooting incident after which Cheney refused to be interviewed by local police until the next day. Nah…no obstruction of justice there.

Or Bush’s blocking of an investigation by the DOJ into the behavior of the department’s lawyers in regards to the warrantless wiretapping program, which otherwise Bush advised us was completely legal and did not receive any objections by administration lawyers.

Or the illegal use of RNC e-mail accounts for conducting government business.

Or the destruction of millions of government e-mails, also in violation of the law.

Or Cheney’s refusal to abide by oversight from the National Archives in regard to properly securing classified data, a procedure he had no problem with prior to 2003. And let’s not forget Cheney’s attempt at dismantling the department in the Nat’l Archives charged with carrying out that oversight.

Nah. Manslagt thinks these incidents are just fine.

Am I the only person that is offended when someone calls someone homosexual/fag/gay intending it to be derogatory.

    Comment by ry81 — December 27, 2007 @ 3:59 pm

No, you’re not the only one. I am against name-calling just on general principle, since it’s seldom constructive and it tends to kill all hope of intelligent discourse. It’s also basically saying “I have run out of intelligent things to say, so I have become a second grader.”

It’s especially offensive when the name-calling denigrates a group of people having nothing to do with the topic of conversation. No — “homosexual”, “fag”, “gay” or similar labels should not be used with the intention of being derogatory, and conflating homosexuality with negative traits exhibited by posters here on TP is harmful all the way around — offensive to gays and it makes the name-caller look like an idiotic homophobic bigot.

I am also offended when derogatory terms about females are used. When one poster calls another poster a “pussy”, this is offensive to me, since it’s usually meant to mean weakness, as in “weak as a woman.” Similarly, making snide comments about “screaming like a little girl” or “running away like a little girl” to indicate cowardice is just as unfair to women.

I appeal to all posters that if they are tempted to engage in name-calling, to ask themselves two questions:

    1) Have I really run out of intelligent arguments to the point I am reduced to this?

    2) If I call somebody something offensive, am I offending only that person, or am I offending a whole group of people who aren’t the target of my wrath?

This comes from both sides too (not just conservatives) and it is insulting to my intelligence.

I’m with you most of the way, and have been particularly annoyed by the progressives who post here who regularly make homophobic jokes about people on the Right. I brought this up some time back and was slagged off with “Aw, we’re just poking fun at their hypocrisy.” Constantly accusing members (sorry) of the Bush administration of being closeted gays (or not so closeted) just to jab at them is homophobic. Period.

Sometimes, however, insulting an obvious troll seems entirely appropriate. When I call one of them a pompous fathead, an idiot, or a moron isn’t intended to insult an entire class of people, just that particular pompous fatheaded idiot.

And, frankly, I don’t take really well to ry81 suddenly appearing (or reappearing) and launching into his concern speech about the rest of us insulting his intelligence.

Caught the tail end of a roundtable on PBS yesterday discussing Bush’s orwellian NewSpeak and the concept of apathy in this country along with the why’s of it all. I’ve noticed that many americans actually don’t care about the truth in any given situation at all which is quite depressing; however, the level of Newspeak or DoubleSpeak which has been buffed up by the Bushitcos is enough to boggle the intellect of an average individual. That said, however, when it comes to impeachable crimes, many more ears begin to perk up and thus we are seeing the beginning of a groundswell of support for Wexler’s efforts.

Naturally, we all want to see justice done to this gang of thugs running things; however, I believe that the mere whisper of it now taking wing among mainstream media outlets and it’s concomittant reverberations nationwide have opened the firestorm of enhanced consciousness in this country. If it actually results in impeachment, that would certainly be a wonderful breath of fresh air for a country on it’s way down into the dark abyss of lawlessness and abortion of civil rights. If it does nothing more than raise our own consciousness via the discussions in corridors, streets, and hallways everywhere in this country, then we will become a more enlightened population.

The best outcome for Wexler’s call for impeachment (first Cheney and then Dumbya??) is that the rest of the globe will not view americans in the same disgusting light in which they view these criminals. “We” are not “them” and never shall be. If nothing else, this call by the people for the impeachment of an official guilty of horrendous crimes against this democracy will send the message loudly and clearly across this planet and perhaps we, as prisoners of this demented regime in Washington, can redeem our reputation in the eyes of the world.

I assume that the “drivel” you are talking about is the impeachment of Cheney? The number isn’t as small as you think, nor is it as small as you wish it to be.

According to the American Research Group poll cited by Wexler, 70% of Americans believe that Cheney has abused his office to some degree. Out of those degrees, 43% chose the most severe of the choices listed in the poll — that Cheney needs to be removed from office immediately.

That’s almost half of America wanting him to be impeached now, and almost three quarters at least leaning that way. Not exactly a “small, small, small number”…

But hey — if you’re happy in your denial, enjoy it.

Who knows what the real numbers are when the administration is ruling through intimidation.

Pete & Shayne: Fear is the ultimate human crippler. The Bush Fear agenda (war on terror - holy smokes! If that isn’t the ultimate nightmare phraseology - guess these neofascists stayed up late at night to concoct that one!) has crippled people’s sense of true patriotism, reducing some of us into a heap of trembling paranoia. I say “some of us” because it’s clear that those of us who take the time to “fight for truth” on these blogs are not numbered among that writhing morass of squirming AND COMPLICIT eels. Of course, this excludes our imbecilic trolls whose main purpose of existence is to spew drivel and reichwing nutjob talking points.

However, in viewing the opposite side of the coin regarding the positives of troll blather, lookey here! This thread is now 237 posts long. Perhaps these same blathering trolls help to keep TP in business? Or at least considered one of the top political blogs. In playing the devil’s advocate, perhaps these trolls are, indeed, “paid operatives”…..but the question remains: Paid by whom?

Bartlebee: The reason Congress is afraid to stand up to Bush is because they know that Bush’s illegal spy program got plenty of “goods” on every last one of them. Why do you think they’d knuckle under and concede so spinelessly?

Impeach Chaney and take the heat off the decision maker George Bush?
    What a waste of time.
