Bush signs SCHIP extension.

“President Bush on Saturday signed legislation that extends a popular children’s health insurance program after twice vetoing attempts to expand it,” AP reports. “The extension of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program is expected to provide states with enough money to cover those enrolled through March 2009.”

Ebenezer Bush saw the light? Or political expediency turned the tide?

  2. Bonnie says:

    Why did he do it?

  3. bilbobaggins says:

Wow, even Bush is finally seeing the handwriting on the wall. Things must be looking pretty grim for him to do something like this. What’s next? Is he going to sign the stem cell research law?

  4. Chris O. says:

What a horribly, horribly misleading title. Bush signed an extension of SCHIP, not expansion. This is what Bush wanted, not what the Democrats wanted. This is not a victory for our side, and you’ve obviously misled your commenters into thinking it is.

  5. ThatsNotFunny says:

Here here, Chris O. Bad title, TP.O!

  6. bilbobaggins says:

Ok, I’m curious as to how he signed the bill that didn’t include the increases. As far as I can tell, Congress didn’t send him a SCHIP bill without the increases. What did he do? Did he sign the original bill and then do a signing statement saying that he wouldn’t honor the increases? The Republiscums are going to rue the day they let Bush get away with his lawless actions. They will not be able to criticize a Democratic President who pulls the same tricks that Bush pulls. They will criticize the Democrats, of that I am sure. But they will certainly have no moral authority to back up their criticism.

Either way, he sure did it quietly.
Perhaps he didn’t want his war mongering buddies to know he was spending on something other than death and destruction.

I await President Hillary’s signing statements that dictate the new federal program of universal health care.

It’s her absolute right, as inferred by her War Powers inherent in Article Two.

That is, as long as Hillary doesn’t suffer the same fate her equivalent did in Pakistan…

    God help us.

he got something he really wanted in return, BUT what ??

Political cover. He thinks that by signing legislation to extend the current program (I still don’t know how he did that) he thinks that he will diffuse the subject as a campaign issue. He’s wrong.

  11. Marie says:

This is nothing more than exploitation for political gain – he never cared about children’s health before – and he still doesn’t. This is an extension – merely a CYA done in a slow news week to get it off the front page.

  12. Veritas says:

Bush is suddenly developing a conscience? Wonders never cease!

Bilbo: I fear you’ve hit the nail right on it’s distorted head! Bush does nothing without an ulterior motive; no sociopath ever does.

    Thanks a lot, Daddy – O – Bigpoot O – Assho….

(You can certainly expect no help from God with an attitude like that.)

  17. OneCitizen says:

Why did he do it, you may ask?

Let’s just say that Tiny Tim and the Ghost of X-Mas FUTURE may have haunted some GOP leaders…

esp as the economy really begins to sink and the need for this grows astronomically.

  19. AngryOne says:

On Saturday, President Bush scored a triple victory when he quietly signed a bill extending the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) through March 2009. First, the President teed up “socialized medicine” as the definitive 2008 GOP talking point in response to any new health care initiatives coming from the Democratic Party. Second, he added another win for the GOP campaign of obstructionism, blocking Democratic successes at any cost in the hope of painting Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi as leaders of a “do-nothing” Congress. And last, George W. Bush kept intact his consistent record of fierce opposition to the popular children’s health insurance program dating back to his days as Governor of Texas. And as in Texas, he went on to claim credit for it.

    For the details, see:
“Bush a Block Off the Old S-CHIP.”

  20. evil_framers_of_the_constitution says:

well, if they keep labeling this an expansion, not an extension (doublespeak) – then Bush did win. The lame media stupifies the general public again.

  21. had enough says:

This is fine and good, but what about the expanded program?
Can’t have anything going in the direction of universal health care, can we?
How misleading is the word extension in place of expansion? Who and what is doing the play on words?
The fact Bush did not sign this initially may have left a hole politically, therefore Bush signed this. Certainly not from the goodness of that fascists heart.

nevar – nice to see you back posting again.

I don’t trust the boy Bush. He thinks that he is going to improve his legacy on the domestic front.

BTW – after 3900 dead American military caused by an illegal war, I can no longer carry the “Coffins” and I am returning to Cats r Flyfish. I need some optimism.

  24. getagripxxx says:

    Seriously bad header.

The dems caved and sent him a bill basically providing continuing funding for the _current_ program, which won’t even cover the existing enrollments.

It was either that or let it expire.

They can bring it up again next summer/fall. Let chimpie veto it two months before elections

  25. had enough says:

Ray Taliaferro from KGO could do a fine show on this topic, could really take Bush to task… But since Bernie Ward has been silenced by Citadel Broadcasting the parent company of KGO, he appears to be silenced also as his shows now do not contain issues of the Bush Crime Family.

  26. Gatsby says:

All the little scumbag did was to sign an extension of the existing program so it does not run out of money right away. Of course, the GOPers will greet this as a generous moment.

Maybe Herr Bush has started to take notice of polls? After all, he seems to be concerned with his “legacy”.

  32. brently says:

Not an expansion… just an extension. No more kids are getting health care than before. He signed this in the quiet of a Saturday in return for the war funding $70 Billion) he just got. Don’t make this look like a Dem victory. Nobody won in this exchange. I’m reminded of a song by a great punk rock band, called Jawbreaker: “Bad scence, everybody loses.”

  33. Quizmos says:

TP has become a Headline reactionary chamber that invites knee-jerkers to spout off like they knew what they were talking about, or actually had something of interest to impart. Only a few here have observed that the propagandist headline, “Bush Signs SCHIP Expansion” is a false and misleading claim. Nonetheless, dismissing these people as though they were just more voices in a cacophony of liberal claptrap, the reactionaries carry on as though there was some validity to the disinformation they have been served up. In fact, bullshit is bullshit…unless you argue about it, then it is the subject of conversation. In this instance, the TP knee-jerkers have truly sucked the stawman dry!
