Huckabee: ‘I Don’t Know’ If People Are ‘Born’ Gay, But It’s A ‘Choice’ To Act Gay

On NBC’s Meet The Press this morning, host Tim Russert asked former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee if he believed “people are born gay or choose to be gay?” “I don’t know whether people are born that way,” responded Huckabee, “but one thing I know, that the behavior one practices is a choice.”

Huckabee conceded that “people who are gay say that they’re born that way,” but added that he believed that “how we behave and how we carry out that behavior” is more important. Watch it:

As ThinkProgress has noted before, Huckabee has a record of using the power of government to discriminate against the choices that gay Americans make in their private lives. As governor of Arkansas, Huckabee pushed to strengthen the state’s anti-sodomy laws in order to “protect the traditional family structure”:

In 1997, Huckabee requested an amendment to a state Senate bill stating “that it is Arkansas public policy to prohibit sodomy to protect the traditional family structure.” [Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 1/23/1997]

Huckabee is also fervent in his efforts to deny gay men and women the right to choose to marry the ones they love. Recently, he told GQ that “civilization” may not survive if “what marriage and family means” is “rewritten” to allow gay marriage.

Russert also pressed Huckabee on his comparison of homosexuality to necrophilia, which he described as “publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations.” Huckabee claimed that he was not saying they were “equivalent,” but was only “pointing out” that they “are deviations from what has been the traditional concept of sexual behavior.”

I was waiting for a Huckabee thread, but more about his comments regarding abortion. He today stated a belief that doctors who perform abortions have abrogated their hippocratic oaths, and should have their licences to practice revoked – and Timmy missed a prime “gotcha,” when he didn’t ask about doctors who oversaw the torture of renditioned prisoners, and abrogation of THEIR oaths.

5 – He also missed the opportunity to ask why the doctors who perform abortions should not be subject to the death penalty just like any other murderer. Hucks position is entirely inconsistant. The right wing does not believe that abortion is murder any more than the rest of us – or if they do, it’s a special kind of murder.

  13. The_Dudester says:

Another misdirection to keep the befuddled and confused at odds with the open-minded souls wanting a diverse and just society to obtain some type of majority. If Gov. Huckleberry wants to defend the family, then stand up for educational and economic policies that allow families to retool, to heal and to grow healthy in every sense.

If about 10 per cent of Americans are borne or choose to live a gay life style, how is that a threat to the survival of the family? Rather his statements are consistent with people who rather us not think of racial, economic, educational, gender injustices; so the wealthy and powerful can continue to benefit at our disarray. Dividing Americans whether out of ignorance or design to benefit one’s own position has certain GOP ring, smacks of demagoguery. I think the media calls it populism! HA!

  14. Gregor Samsa says:

I dare say that, given Huckabee’s narrow-minded understanding of human sexuality, most people behave in ways he would call “deviations” from the “traditional concept of sexual behavior”.

  16. Forrest Prince says:

Oh, burruthher! What a callous moron Huckabee is proving himself to be. And utterly ignorant of human history, at that. He believes that homosexuality is a “[deviation] from what has been the traditional concept of sexual behavior”? Traditional in whose eyes? His maybe, but not in the world at large. Homosexual behavior has been a condition of humanity since our species first evolved, and that is a fact of history that cannot be changed or denied. Furthermore, it has been amply demonstrated that homosexual behavior is not limited to the human species. Thus, homosexuality and it’s attendant “behavior” is fully a natural function of many lifeforms on this planet, “tradition” notwithstanding.

When will this guy pull his head out of his Biblical arse and acknowledge reality? Oh, pardon me. That was a rhetorical question with the obvious answer: never.

If the economy hasn’t substantially inproved by election day, they could paint themselves red, white, and blue, and whistle the stars and stripes out their corn-holes for all it mattered, but voters will still treat them like a bad dose of clap.

  18. curmudgeon says:

So how does one act gay?

Why didn’t that wimp Russert ask Huckleberry to demonstrate what he meant?

In addition, if Russett (sp) had any kahunas, he would have asked the preacher man the following questions:

    1) If a male same-sex couple were to move in next door to you, how would that negatively impact your marriage? Are you afraid that it might it cause you to question your own sexual orientation, causing you to start meeting with Larry Craig in airport restrooms? Or are you merely afraid that if too many people chose same-sex unions, there would not be enough Christian soldiers to carry out the modern-day version of the Crusades?

    2) Are you saying that if a person is born heterosexual, they can practice their sexuality, but if a person is born gay, they must remain celibate for life? What if a gay man practices complete abstinence, but lusts after another man in his heart? Will that qualify for extra credit, or is that person toast anyway, in which case, he might as well go for the whole enchilada?

    3) Since Jesus made several statements about marriage in the New Testament, since the Bible is the Word of God, and since God is infallible, how on earth could Jesus has not bothered to say anything about homosexuality? Do you suppose he really meant to say something, but forgot?

Just think of the ratings that Timmy could garner if he just tried being real for a change.

  27. curmudgeon says:

Since Huckleberry is the Preacher Man, Timmy should have also asked him the following two-part question…

    1) Do you accept the guidance provided by Jesus Christ in the New Testament? (The second question assumes that the Huckster replies in the affirmative).

    2) Timmy then hands him the Bible (NIV, the preferred choice of evangelicals) and asks him to read Matthew 25:31-46, which reads,

31″When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34″Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37″Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40″The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

41″Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44″They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45″He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46″Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

The obvious followup question: How did you apply these principles when you were the Governor of Arkansas and how would you apply them if you were to become President?

  28. Dreary Urbanite says:

“Sodomy is a sin against God and nature.”

    Comment by JPV

Is that just sodomy between men? What about contraception? Which positions does ghod allow? Does he require special underwear? More importantly why should I care what your imaginary friend tells you?

  29. hmbnancy says:

The more pertinent question is: How will his opinion on the nature of gay sexual expression impact his willingness to uphold to the laws of non-discrimination in the workspace or for government-provided services in a country where a good percentage of Americans consider themselves homosexual or bi-sexual and not heterosexual?

  30. The_Dudester says:

It amazes me these smaller government, states rights politicians want a place in our homes and ultimately our bedrooms to monitor our sexual behavior. The only caveat is where violence occurs, but that is common sense. As the song by the Silver Fox goes ‘behind closed doors’ is between lovers.

So Gov. Huckleberry wants the government in our bedrooms or just him, this makes him a voyeur. How perverted is that? Now I have to go to the Federal Building with picture IDs to get a permit to exchange bodily fluids! This was at one time a place for tolerance and freedom. What a bummer!!!

  31. Forrest Prince says:

And another thought that Huckabee might entertain (but almost certainly never will):

If humans are not born with any particular sexual orientation in their genetic makeup, either straight or gay, then it follows that indeed one’s sexuality is a matter of personal choice, upon which it follows that each and everyone of us, including Huckabee at one time in our life, was faced with making that choice.

So, my question to Huckabee would be “tell me about the time you had to make that choice, sir. Tell me all about the day you decided to be straight rather than gay”. Of course, he couldn’t coherently answer any such question. He never had to make any such choice. Neither did I, neither has anyone else. It should be obvious to anyone of even moderate education that sexual orientation is inborn, and just a natural fact of who you are.

And if you’re born gay, then according to Huckabee’s religious doctrine, that’s just exactly the way God wanted you, since God is in control of creating people. Thus, quite contrary to Huckabee’s religious viewpoint, God is responsible for creating homosexuals, and therefore homosexual is just the way God wants certain people to be. Who is Huckabee to argue against the will of God?

  32. delafield says:

I laugh at people like Huckabee. He wants to criticize everything that goes on in other people’s bedrooms. When Huckabee tells us the nasty things that he does to his wife and the nasty things that she does to him, maybe he’ll have more credibility.

  33. barfly says:

A larger question is, why would God make penguins gay? I mean, first he makes them flightless, then he structures them so that they can’t run very fast, then he gives them the gay. He must reaally hate them.

I had a friend in college. He was the sort of angry activist that made other activists throw up their hands and go listen to Pink Floyd for a couple of months. Nothing was ever quick enough, big enough, daring enough, or ideologically pure enough. But he was our friend, and we lived with it.
After graduation, we were distressed to learn that he had become a disciple of the Guru Maharaj Ji–the 15 year old perfect master. We met with him to try to talk him out of it, but while he was still lucid and funny, all that torrential energy was turned to devotion. “I’d crawl around the world for him on my hands and knees for him. I would.” Sadly, we stopped trying and lost track of him.
Five years later, I was moving back to town, and I ran into him, He had come out of the closet. The transformation was miraculous: he was happy and at peace. The fountain of anger was gone. I spread the word, and the reaction was universal: thank God.

You can repress what you are. You can internalize the condemnation of religion, and believe that the impulses you feel are evil. And you can live your life as if parts of you are perpetually catching fire. Or you can be true to yourself.
Denying your most basic feelings can not only make you a disaster to those around you–it can also make you run off in dangerous directions.

    1) Huck, ask yourself if you chose heterosexuality, or if it just came naturally to you… I’ll bet you say the latter… then apply the same rationale to gay people…

    2) defense of marriage and family… does Huck think straight people are going to suddenly stop getting married if gay people can get married?

    3) choosing actions… what is a person who feels gay supposed to do, never act on their feelings? or go through that brainwashing/reparative therapy? no good options there…

    4) aberration… actually there have always been lots of gay people, and probably more than we’ll ever know, because many of them stay in the closet because of people like you, Huck…

  58. The_Dudester says:

It is religious tyranny when someone, like Gov. Huckleberry, projects their personal piety onto others with legal constraints and punishment for not being as pious as him. Does he really want to concern him self with who goes to sleep with a smile on their face and how they got to that state of bliss. What is next all Christians, Jews, Muslims and other people mediating required to turn in their prayer list.

Of course before this would happen, we would have to submit religious ceremony attendance information. Since we would resist and skip chapel, Gov. Huckleberry would require prayer lists.

If Gov. Huckleberry truly wants to be the interpreter and enforcer of sexuality, then he has political and religious allies in the Taliban and Al Qaeda. As for me, like Patrick Henry before me, “Give me Liberty or give me Death”!

Theocracy does not work. It didn’t work in the OT with God raising up Prophets to counter the Kings nor did it work here. People want freedom to make choices and those choices they feel are wrong and not harmful to others they can go to their higher power seeking a path back to a sense of piety. We did not come this far in this grand experiment called America to retreat to autocratic authoritarian rule.

    I ain’t abiding this!!

I agree with the Huck that being gay is a choice. Gay is a lifestyle that most of those who are homosexual choose to live. Just as most heterosexuals choose to live their lives straight.

For example, Larry Craig is a homosexual who chooses to not live a gay lifestyle. On the other hand, I am a homosexual who chooses to live the gay lifestyle. Thus, I didn’t view my trip east this Christmas (err, holiday season) as an opportunity to get some nuggie in a stall at JFK, but rather as a way of traveling 6000 miles to have ambiguous canoodling with an ex. There’s a difference.

The verse in Revelations that is so often used against homosexuals states that no effeminate will enter heaven. The same verse also says that no adulterer will enter heaven.

It is really sad that someone that has such views has so much support.
    Comment by Jack Jett

No, what is sad is that most people don’t know that he has those views. Huckabee is being treated very kindly in the MSM. They rarely mention his bigoted views.

  94. Sabyen91 says:

“That’s a mighty wide stance that Huck is taking.”

Yup, that is Larry Craig wide!!

Adam and EVE not Adam and STEVE!

    Comment by BernardQuatermass — December 30, 2007 @ 4:18 pm

    Let’s compromise–Adam and YVES!
On a more serious note, the Bible itself contradicts the “Adam and Eve” story.
    Genesis 1: 26-30

    26. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
    27. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
    28. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
    29. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
    30. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

A careful reading there shows that there was neither “Adam” nor “Eve”, merely “male and female”. Also, the verse seems to contradict and/or correct itself: “. . . God created he him” at first, then “. . . created he them.”
It’s not until Chapter 2 that the names “Adam” and “Eve” even appear. Because of that “error”, Jewish rabbis developed an “explanation” to preserve the Bible’s “inerrancy”: That the woman created *with* Adam was named Lilith, and that she refused to accept Adam’s supremacy over her (an extra bit of spicy goodness included Lilith’s demand that she be “on top” during sex–oh yeah, the rabbis had determined that Adam and Lilith had sex in the Garden, and later that Adam and Eve had sex before the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge incident; apparently, the Big G didn’t mind “innocent” sex), and that God corrected his “error” through the now famous “ribbed for your pleasure” story. Lilith re-emerged as the “Mother of Demons” during the Middle Ages (apparently, the connection was that her “innocent” sexual escapades with Adam produced no offspring but when she voluntarily left the Garden, she then began mating with animals and the animal sperm combined with Adam’s sperm to produce demons; these medieval rabbis obviously didn’t get laid very often to come up with such wild tales).

  96. JosephW says:

Correction to my above post: The name “Eve” doesn’t appear until Chapter 3 (in Genesis 2, the woman is named “Woman”).

  98. lespool says:

And I will pray fervently for you Mr. Huckabee, as your obsession with gay lifestyles is hardly conducive to heterosexual behavior, now is it?

  99. truthfairy says:

i find it hard to believe this jerk really believes what he is saying #11 makes the point jesus commented on gay behaviour, so being gay has been around a while ! seems time folks like huckabee the hayseed found some manners and accepted everyone in the room…love is all you need to defeat this narrow minded anti freedom rhetoric

  100. truthfairy says:

#100, thank you for the read, however isnt it possible to put aside the religious rantings which are being used to politicise a life style ? the only way sad little men like huckabee the wannabe can gain a foothold anywhere is to throw mud so others of his mental capacity can cheer, he needs to deal with his own self hate and loathing

Are we supposed to select,or elect our president based on his concerns with some peoples’ ‘private area’…?!!

  102. spike says:

Another large question is why does god hate giraffes?

I mean, he gave them this long, unwieldy neck that makes it hard for them to drink water from a spring, these gangly legs that make it hard for them to run, and -on top of that- he gave them “the gay”.

He must really hate giraffes too ;-)

    Comment by Gregor Samsa — December 30, 2007 @ 2:54 pm

I think God shows a sense of humour in devising an animal that can span three or four airport toilet booths in one very wide stance:)

  103. spike says:

Huck is scary, but on reflection, the more scary part is the number of people that actually are going to vote for him or for the other “christian” talibans.

  104. tarazan says:

    #108. Spike,
….And that will happen when we elect Mr. Huckabee as a ‘Preacher in Chief’.

  105. missmolly says:

In 1997, Huckabee requested an amendment to a state Senate bill stating “that it is Arkansas public policy to prohibit sodomy to protect the traditional family structure.” [Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 1/23/1997]

    ——————————————————

A couple of observations about sodomy and “traditional family structure”:

    1) Heterosexuals haven’t exactly revered and respected the institution of marriage. About half of all heterosexual marriages in this country end in divorce. About half of all American children spend (or will spend) at least part of their years living in a single-parent family.

    2) Heterosexual marriage is being regarded as less and less necessary to having children.

    3) Sodomy has been known to occur in heterosexual relationships, including heterosexual marriage.

And now sodomy is the culprit responsible for destroying the traditional family structure? Give me a break.

    Born-again Christianity is a choice.

  107. shunamo says:

The comment about orientation vs. behavior is really the first thing I have heard from Huckabee that sounds close to reasonable. Of course he uses his conclusion in the wrong way though.

I am gay and of course each individual behavior and action follows a choice, whether you take 1/1000 th of a second or 2 hours to make the decision.

Every time I have “acted” gay has followed the choice to do so, but I have a right to that choice since I am American. The founding fathers left a legacy that includes my choice to have gay sex, talk about my partner to my friends, listen to gay music, go to gay clubs (if I want to), bake chocolate chiffon cakes, wear plaid shirts with cutoffs, etc.

So screw you Huckleberry. I do make a choice and its my right. You have no business taking those choices away from me. Get the hell out of my American life. Ron Paul 2008!

  108. lgseiferth says:

So what are his Christian recommendations for gay people to choose to do?

    Celibacy? (like Catholic priests)

    Hetero marriage (like Larry Craig)?

This guy is in no way qualified to lead anything other than a Southern Baptist church in Arkansas. Then again, Bush was elected for the same reasons Huckabee is trying to get elected, and it worked! The question is, will we make the same mistake twice?

  109. bitblt says:

    Assume facts not in evidence.

I’m open to being corrected especially about the, ” The founding fathers left a legacy that includes my choice to have gay sex, …”

Exactly why do you think the founding fathers left you this choice? Do you have some authority for this statement?

  110. dbadass says:

Is daryll back from Rio yet? Sorry but I have been out of town and didn’t have time to scroll this list for his insights on gayiety. Anyone interested in researching the science which has been done on the effects of hormones on the masculination and feminization of the brain. Still inconclusive but really interesting stuff.

  111. buckrogers1965 says:

Oh, give the guy a break. It’s obvious he knows it’s true because he had to make the choice to be strait rather than a flaming gay man himself.

  112. mr.frazzlebottom says:

    Ron Paul 2008!

And what makes you say that? His apparent libertarianism I suppose. But underneath that he remains as Religious as the rest of the majority of Republicans.

    This is from http://lesbianlife.about.com/od/lesbianactivism/p/RonPaul.htm

Employment Non-Discrimination: Ron Paul is opposed to Employment Non-Discrimination Bill that is inclusive of gays, lesbians and transgender.

Hate Crimes: Ron Paul opposes a transgender-inclusive hate crimes bill. As a matter of fact, he opposes any hate crimes legislation.

Same-Sex Marriage/Civil Unions: Ron Paul opposes same-sex marriage, but does not support a federal amendment to define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Gay and Lesbian Adoption: Ron Paul voted to support a ban of gay adoptions in Washington, DC in 1999.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: Ron Paul supports keeping the military ban on gays and lesbians. He said, “I think the current policy is a decent policy.”

There are references there to original sources (although I have not verified them all).

Watch out for Ron Paul. One has to look beyond his supporters to find out his true colors. He just might not be all that great.

Some are, some aren’t. Know that thing about yawning when others do? Here try this: rotate your right foot in small clockwise circles… Good… Now using your right hand with index finger extended draw the number six in the air. Did you feel your foot go backwards?

  117. enough says:

Hey Huckleberry, Is callousness genetic or is it a choice? The Newsweek article about your abuse of power protecting your son from charges after he tortured and killed a stray dog in front of boy scouts makes me think that, in your case, it is genetic.

  118. ucsbclassics53 says:

As if the wingnuts’ sole criteria whether they denied rights to people is their notion of “choice”…

did women choose to be women when they were denied the right to vote?
Did African-Americans choose their skin color when they denied them the right to vote, were forced to attend separate “but equal” schools, could not sit in the front of the bus?

The wingnut argument that homosexuality is a choice, a deviant “lifestyle” and that this is the reason to deny them marriage or the right not to be fired by their employers quickly falls apart when you look at their history of denying rights. It is a convenient excuse to oppress another marginalized group in our society.

  119. pete says:

    Way off topic.

This will be my last comment at TP. The editorial staff has elected to remove my response to a rabid attack, while leaving the falsehoods of the other party for all to see. This is unacceptable.

I’ve had fun, and, I will doubtless run into many of you on, effectively moderated, forums.

I can’t leave without a warning, however. The troll known as BARTLEBEE is a narrow minded, ignorant, hateful, judgmental, abusive sh!t-stain. And, when challenged, it lies like the lowest of conservative trolls. Don’t dare to disagree with it or you may be the next one subjected to it’s foul abuse only to have your response deleted as happened to me in this thread:http://thinkprogress.org/2007/11/29/huckabee-phone-call-with-god/#comment-4191249

  120. WithUniquity says:

I’m gay but I’m tired of people both liberal and conservative who don’t see the middle ground about this, for example, a good friend of mine is Orthodox Jewish, and is not allowed to have sex until marriage, I have sex now and then, and him and I get along perfectly fine. So I’m jus trying to say that ppl should jus get along instead of forcing their views on others, I wish huckabee and the other right wingers would understand that.
