Also during his Meet The Press appearance today, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee said that as President he would seek to “find some way to sanction” doctors “who took money to provide abortions to women if he succeeded in outlawing the procedure.” “I don’t know that you’d put him in prison,” added Huckabee. He said that he would “not support penalizing women who sought abortions even if they were outlawed” because he considers a woman who seeks an abortion to be “a victim, not a criminal.”
UPDATE: A recent study by the Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organization found that criminalization is ineffective in lowering abortions, and that the procedure is most “dangerous in countries where it was outlawed and performed clandestinely.”
Thanks TP, for putting this up.
As in the previous thread, I’m still curious if ‘ol Huck thinks that the doctors who oversaw the torure of prisoners also meets his criterion for doctors who’ve abrogated their hippocratic oaths, and so should be prosecuted.
December 30th, 2007 at 5:11 pmI also wonder if his Christian spirit of forgiving the mothers extends to drug-addicted individuals who get busted while scoring from their dealers. Prosecute the dealer, but let the user walk?

Huckabee’s thought processes are pretty scary. I fear for this country if this person were to be elected as our President.
Besides, the Republiscums would never tolerate outlawing abortions. That would take away their primary wedge issue that they use to keep the uninformed on their side of the fence. Without the abortion boogyman, many in the heartland would finally realize that voting Republican IS NOT in their own best interest.

December 30th, 2007 at 6:29 pmThe government of Nazi Germany was a fascist, totalitarian state. December 30th, 2007 at 6:53 pm#69, Chris L,
You asked: “Should doctors who provide abortions be punished? Should abortion be criminalized?”
James Carville, in a book released a couple years ago, cited that >88% of the American public want to restrict abortion to situations of health of the mother, rape and incest. I would add viability of the fetus to that list.
If abortions were restricted to the list above, and a doctor / patient violate that restriction then:
1) doctor should lose his / her license
December 30th, 2007 at 6:54 pm2) doctor should be prosecuted and sentenced in accordance with existing euthanasia laws
3) patient should be prosecuted and sentenced in accordance with conspiracy / aiding in euthanasia laws

Thanks for being on topic! How do we know if the woman is raped? If she accuses a man of rape, and he is found not guilty in a court of law, do we then punish the doctor who performed the abortion? Who decides the viability of the fetus? If the doctor claims the fetus is not viable, but then another doctor reviews it later and says the fetus was viable, what then? How long should a woman spend in prison for having an abortion? Also, Roe v Wade was based on the right to privacy, so we would have to re-evaluate that law. Then there is the issue of state’s rights, as most states had abortion laws on the books prior to Roe v Wade. Are you starting to see what a quagmire this would be?

You should say Democrats in the South and republicans for the matter.
December 30th, 2007 at 7:08 pmGiven that a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats in both the House and Senate voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act -Manslag
Well, this is off topic. But it was not the congress that introduced the civil rights bill, but President Kennedy. Its true that a slightly higher percentage of Republicans voted for it but it was pushed thru congress and the house by Democratic presidents and was signed into law by Johnson,a democrat.
December 30th, 2007 at 7:08 pmWell, good_golly, since the dems are a bunch of racists, I guess the republicans can count on the Hispanic and African-American vote this next November. I’m sure the minorities are the base of the republican party.
December 30th, 2007 at 7:08 pmI love how people like good_golly seek to excuse the GOP’s lack of commitment to civil rights and voting rights by pointing fingers at the Democrats. Sure, the Democrats take the vote for granted, but to good_golly, this is much worse than suppressing the African-American vote.

I can point to just as many Democrats who supported a war but refused to serve. Max Blumenthal, for example, is the effeminate punk who made the video concerning the College Republicans and Iraq. December 30th, 2007 at 7:22 pmIt’s not misleading. It’s a fact. Only 69 percent of Democrats (46 for, 21 against) in the Senate voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act as compared to 82 percent of Republicans (27 for, 6 against). All southern Democrats voted against the act. In the House, just 61 percent of Democrats (152 for, 96 against) voted for the act compared to 80 percent of Republicans (138 for, 34 against). Democrats may have had a majority in both houses, but LBJ relied on Republicans, led by Everett Dirksen of Illinois, to get the bill through the Senate. Senate Democrats actually filibustered the bill for 74 days.
And, contrary to what has asserted here, the vast majority of those Democrats either died or continue to be Democrats.
Comment by Manslagt — December 30, 2007 @ 7:12 pm
Most of the people who voted for the legislation were Democrats. The republicans had a higher percentage because of their abysmal numbers in the Congress and they had virtually no congressmen in the South. Most congressmen in the North whether they were Democrat or republican voted for the legislation. And virtually all of the Congressmen in South whether they were Democrat or republican voted against the legislation.

I just cannot let that go. The Bosnian conflict simply cannot be distilled down to a requirement to ‘protect white citizens,’ as the most severely impacted group in the conflict were actually ethnic Muslims. Not your everyday ‘white people,’ in your unfortunate parlance.
And easily twice the number of Iraqis of several ethnicities have died—by conservative estimates—including Shia, Sunni, Kurds, Christians, Jews, Turkomen, Tajiks and others since our intervention in Iraq, as the number of Rwandans who died when the world failed to intervene. A genocide and tragedy to be sure, as is the crisis in Darfur. Both of which can be credited to the Bush administration. Given the numbers, what’s your point?
