The crystal ball that glides down atop Times Square in New York City at the stroke of midnight tonight will be more energy efficient than previous New Year’s ball drops. Event organizers are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the event by going green:
The new 6ft ball, weighing about 1,100lbs, is covered with 9,576 light-emitting diodes that use the same amount of electricity as 10 toasters. The LEDs are more than twice as bright as the previous bulbs and are capable of creating a palette of 16 million colors.
I never understood the ball dropping. I suppose it has to do with a falling sun [seasons]
Ennyhoo, happy new year!
December 31st, 2007 at 10:05 pmGreen, schmeen… “Green” is the latest catch word and cover up for developers to continue to cover the planet with human condos, roads, malls, parking lots and office complexes. Development destroys natural habitat, except in large cities, where Mother Nature has been already almost completely covered with concrete and asphalt… “Green development” and “smart growth”: it is truly amazing how the human race can continue to fool itself into believing that it can be “business as usual” as we continue to destroy the planet…
Happy New Year…

Happy New Year, ThinkProgress & commenters (except the trolls).
December 31st, 2007 at 10:19 pmThe ball dropping is just one of a litany of rituals that “perhaps” had some real meaning to a few people in the past. Capitalism has usurped most all of these “local doings” and created something that was never intended, as a justification for pushing its own agenda. Take Valentines day pushed by candy manufacturers or that great O’Liely holiday called Christmas. (This one is about as far away from the original intent as capitalism can drive it.)
Look for the underlying emotional desire that needs a justification for expression. (And is often suppressed! Take that marvel of ingenuity called the “bundling board” designed to keep 2 young testosterone driven teenagers from being sexual. Yeah, right.) It is a great technique! Suppress something, (speech, alcohol, sex, whatever, and then allow it to happen at a price which those in power or control benefit from.) Sigh…
Sorry… my cynicism is leaking out.

Without sites like TP, DailyKos, FDL, Consortium News, The Daily Howler, TPM and many others, we would, as a country, be in doo doo so deep, there would be no way out.
May we revel in the coming year, the Democratic tidal wave that is so visable and scaring the bejesus out of the wingnuts and those idiot neocon enablers who are wandering around spouting old useless talking points (trolls come to mind here. Frank, Jake, Capt. M… the list is too long to complete.) with their heads securely tucked in a soft warm place.
Have a great party everyone! See you in 2008!

US to integrage its missile system with Israel ?! House vote- 394-30
Dec-31-07
WTF – Israel to integrage its missile system with America’s?
Our missile defense system isn’t even integrated with NATO and we’re going to integrate it with Israel? This is effing obscene. Why not just save ourselves a lot of trouble, hand them the launch keys and directly subordinate our military to Tel Aviv?
Bill includes U.S.-Israel missile coordination
Published: 12/14/2007
Congress is set to approve a plan to integrate the U.S. and Israeli missile defense systems.
The proposal, authored by U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), is part of the Defense Authorization Act passed late Wednesday by the U.S. House of Representatives and due to be considered by the Senate before Christmas break. Under the proposal, the secretary of defense must within six months present a plan to Congress a plan “to improve the coordination, interoperability, and integration of the U.S. National Ballistic Missile Defense System with Israel’s missile defense architecture,” a statement from Kirk’s office said.
Such a plan will help defend Israel against reported plans by Iran to build missiles that can reach Israel, Kirk said. “Israel will be the first and only country to fully integrate with the American missile defense architecture,” the statement said. “It is a symbol of our shared values and a safer 21st century.

January 1st, 2008 at 10:31 amAfter the “Oil Shocks” of the 1970’s, Americans responded by trading in their V-8s for toyotas and datsuns. Oil prices plunged, sending OPEC into a panic. They were thinking they had killed their golden goose. Let’s hope that 2008 is the beginning of a Green corner being turned. Some hopefull news:
The holy grail of renewable energy came a step closer yesterday as thousands of mass-produced wafer-thin solar cells printed on aluminium film rolled off a production line in California, heralding what British scientists called “a revolution†in generating electricity.
The solar panels produced by a Silicon Valley start-up company, Nanosolar, are radically different from the kind that European consumers are increasingly buying to generate power from their own roofs. Printed like a newspaper directly on to aluminium foil, they are flexible, light and, if you believe the company, expected to make it as cheap to produce electricity from sunlight as from coal.

January 1st, 2008 at 10:46 amHappy New Year, everyone — even the trolls, who I hope will come to see that Democrats are the ones who care about the people and the planet. Bush and his cronies have done much to destroy everything that made America unique and good – but the trolls remain blind to the harm they have done, focusing, as they have been told, on wedge issues that keep Americans divided and antagonistic.
January 1st, 2008 at 11:32 amSo I hope the year 2008 brings happiness to us all — Democrats who will begin restoration, and Republicans who will recognize it as good.
Happy New Years everyone. And I so agree with poster #6. It is going to be great celebrating a new year without a Republiscum in the White House. That will truly be something to celebrate. That will be the beginning of our national healing. I really couldn’t get up much enthusiasm to celebrate this year. I find it profoundly depressing that we have another year of the Bush Crime Family to contend with. I’m hoping that the Democrats got spines for Christmas and will come roaring back in January.

There are a few (very few) neo-con’s who come here who are willing to debate but the majority are here to try to stir up the pot. If we refuse to throw anything into their pot, they will get bored and go away. But, we all have to be willing not to react to them. The minute one person reacts, it opens the floodgates. Do we really need more 400+ posting threads where a majority of the posts are us talking to a brick wall?

I was in a radio parts store recently and nearly blinded myself fooling around with an LED flashlight. They had several variants, with either a single or multiple LEDs and I got too close to the business end of the light directly, rather than by reflection as recommended. Fuggers are BRIGHT!
We’ve also got LED units as safety bars on several of our vehicles at work. Much brighter than previous systems and with a negligible power draw.
I think the flashlights started at about $40.

One of the astonishing things about 1968 was how quickly each shocking, consciousness-altering event succeeded the last, leaving no time for people to reorient themselves. The mind-boggling occurrences seemed to come out of nowhere.

OK, this once, next time can the rhetoric and quit being such a prick/idiot.
If you really want them you can buy leds at Radio Shack and put together your own. I created a UV array of UV leds for use with my Sony camcorder, it will illuminate 100 yards for the camcorder in total darkness. Radio Shack usually stocks leds of all kinds. Just need to be able to use a solder gun and find a guide online if you don’t know how to assemble them already.
No they have not hit the store shelves with a replacement for the screw-in bulbs yet, just fluorescent bulbs so far.

And it looks like Bush has tried hard to bring the Apocalypse on. He has stuck his hand deep into that hornets nest in the Middle East, slapped around and has pissed a lot of them off.
Something else GG forgets or tries to obscure, rather. Seeking justice and Rule of Law, is not the same as hating Bush or anyone else either. No one is above the Law, even the President. Eventually he will be held accountable for his actions.
January 1st, 2008 at 4:21 pm#74, Wayne,
Thankyou for the clear, concise answer.
I am curious as to how incandescents are going to be taken off the store shelves, when I haven’t found a direct replacement for most of the incandescents in my home – oven light, refrigerator light, small clear specialty lights for bathroom and ceiling fixtures, etc.
I did eventually find a much smaller 60W cfl that could fit in my bedside lamp, where the typical ones don’t fit. It takes a sec for it to turn on when I flip the switch, but I’ve gotten used to it.
