Huckabee Commends Bloggers Supporting Him: ‘You’re Doing The Lord’s Work’»

huckabee66.jpg Yesterday in Des Moines, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee hosted an event thanking “roughly 700 bloggers who, he said, were responsible for keeping his campaign alive.”

Calling them his “secret weapon,” Huckabee urged the bloggers to “clog” up the wireless system in Des Moines so that reporters couldn’t file any more “bad” stories about him. He added that by blocking the free press from doing their jobs, bloggers were “doing the Lord’s work”:

Mr. Huckabee had a rough time yesterday at the hands of the media when he announced he was canceling a negative ad against Mitt Romney and then showed the ad to the assembled reporters, who burst out laughing. Today, he turned the tables. He noted that the mainstream media might be “filing a bad story” right now, and if the bloggers were relying on the same wireless system at the hotel, they might be “clogging up the lines” and preventing them from filing.

If that’s the case, “thank you,” he said. “You’re doing the Lord’s work.”

Huckabee has repeatedly made baseless claims that his conservative causes are sanctioned by God. At a Republican Governors Association Dinner speech in 2004, Huckabee had a mock three-minute telephone conversation with God. During that time, Huckabee said that “we kind of think you’d hang in there with us, Lord, we really do.”

In 1997, Huckabee claimed that Jesus would have agreed with him on supporting the death penalty. In 1998, Huckabee spoke at the National Pastors’ Conference and said he entered politics to “take this nation back for Christ.”

Huckabee also promised the bloggers yesterday that he would host a similar get-together if he makes it to the White House. “You gotta dance with the one that brought you,” he said.

Digg It!

Devoutly religious people are the most dangerous people on earth. We do not have to think long or hard to admit this. Huckabee is going after the evangelical-herd-mentality just as Bush did - look where that got us.

I hope that Evangelicals have learned a lesson from their support of Bush/GOP and they renounce Huckabee. Huckabee is as dangerous as Bush has proven to be.

  2. Ms_Joanne Says:

I love it! Officially sponsored by God!

Do ya think if Jesus sponsors the death penalty we could get someone to impose it upon someone who has the f()cking gonads to say such a thing?

  3. Marie Says:

These religious wackos are making me sick. Bush, who hears from God regularly, Huckleberry who believes Jesus would endorse the death penalty, Romney who thinks Jesus would condemn homosexuality.

What is it with these nut jobs who delude themselves into believing their saviour defends their most unchristian attitudes and actions?
Oh, yeah, it must be the nutjobs at Fox noise who encourage them — after all between them and the pundits who believe Robertson, Falwell, etc., they must all surely be right.
    Gagging reflex setting in now.

  8. clif Says:

Boy is the huckster in for a BIG surprise,

When god can’t deliver for him, cause even a god couldn’t make him president after Bush.

  9. candide Says:

“Thank you. You are doing the Lord’s work”! What arrogance! The idea that God wants Huckleduck to be our president is as egotistical as it gets. I suppose those of us who want to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and care for the sick must be working for the forces of evil. The only words that come to mind are expletives that aren’t appropriate for the internet.

  10. Badmoodman Says:

But so will any republican, after the disasters of domestic and foreign policy of the past 7 years. Huckabee as the nominee would merely punch home the idea that Replublicans are anti-American fascist nutjobs that have no place in the leadership of a great nation.

“he was canceling a negative ad against Mitt Romney and then showed the ad to the assembled reporters, who burst out laughing.”

They were only laughing because the audio wasn’t working when the video was playing, it had nothing to do with the boring ass content.

  28. ralph the wonder llama Says:

So… reporters who file stories about Huck trying to have his cake and eat it (claiming the moral high ground by refusing to air an attack ad, but then shwing the attack ad to reporters, thereby getting it wide exposure) are filing “bad stories”, and those who obstruct said reporters are doing “God’s work”?

  37. Daryll Says:

Libs, as I have stated many times, President-Elect Huckabee is doing God’s bidding. He is attempting to rid this government of sin. I truly do not want this government to be equivalent to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. We saved so many souls in the Rohcina Favelas and on Copacabana Beach, near Meia Pataca and Discoteca Help, that the policias had to escort us to their station and question our motives (we could have been fined, but God was with us). We brought so many souls to our tent revival, converted so many homosexuals back into heterosexuality, saved prostitutes, etc. We had to had to explain to theses prostitutes, who were the most beautiful women that I have seen in the world (besides my wife), that they cannot allow foreign men to monger, use and manipulate them. I am sure that our church is assisting in ceasing the sex trade in Brazil. We also put a petition together to close Discoteca Help and Club LeBlanc (Lesbian club). I am back with a double portion of God’s anointing. People, this is why I love President-Elect Huckabee. He is attempting to morally cleanup our nation. He wants to bring back harsh capital punishment. If you don’t like it, apply for a permanent visa in another country or deal with it. We have dominion over the devil and with President-Elect Huckabee, I know this is true. Do you think it is a coincidence that he continues to climb in polls. I think not. This is the work of God. We are going to take back what the devil stole from us. What President Huckabee takes office, we are also requesting that more evangelistic conferences and revivals be added to national syndicated television.

  38. nanlichi Says:

God has taken some serious embarrassment from Bush claiming he whispered in his ear, I doubt if he will be endorsing Deputy Dawg for President.

    Comment by nofltwlt — January 2, 2008 @ 10:34 am

I disagree, if only semantically. I consider “devoutly religious people” to be the ones doing what their religions profess: helping the poor, loving their neighbors, and working for peace. They are not the dangerous people.

The dangerous people are the hypocrites - the ones who, in the name of religion, do the opposite of what their religion teaches. The bin Ladens and Falwells and Robertsons who are sowing intolerance, supporting war, and using religion for political and financial gain are the dangerous ones.

  40. Daryll Says:

    Was Huckabible a former comedian?

    Comment by Mimo — January 2, 2008 @ 11:27 am

No, but I can tell you that hell is not a joke. The return of God is nigh. This year alot of people will lose loved ones and friends (even more than other years). God is not playing. Ensure that your lives our righteous before you leave this earth or before the rapture. Always remember that your next breath is not promised to you.

  41. Godfry Daniel Says:

When is this guy gonna stop worshipping himself and run for president?

  42. Citizen_of_Earth Says:

These Neo-fascists, like their forerunners, will tell us that anyone who does not believe as they do, are evil incarnate, a sub-human, and will be wiped off the face of the earth by the righteous believers. There is no room in the world in the Christian Right for discourse, intellectual research, or disagreement.

All Americans, regardless of religious beliefs need to heed this wake up call. A wake up call that is, telling us the clear and present danger to our democracy is not from a foreign enemy, radical clerics, or undocumented workers. It is from within our own borders. It is from the people who would have you lose your freedom for the sake of salvation and safety.

The Other Side of the Coin: the radical Islamic fundamentalist, who represent the other side of the coin in this discussion on radical religious fundamentalism. It is evident by this group as well, that some just do not want to evolve spiritually. They are content to stay in a 13th Century mindset. They are content to continue to suffer the loss of loved ones, take precious lives, and blame others for some imagined noble cause, their lack of well being or both.

Like fundamental Christianity, they have been co-opted, and by extension the religion hijacked, by a few men who’s only desire is to hold on to power, and promote their narrow view at the exclusion of dialogue, trust and understanding. Unlike the Christian Fundamentalist, they do not allow women to share in the power, and this is what makes them especially dangerous.

That said, the two camps, radical Islam and radical Christianity, are apparently headed on a collision course towards a clash of civilizations. All at the peril of humanity.

So we have to beg the question, can this process be stopped or even reversed? Can dialogue and the ensuing trust it naturally builds work? Or, are we truly doomed to an Armageddon by design of these few misguided individuals?

I hope that the majority of Christians and Muslims will have the courage to finally stand up and say, “We have had enough, me and my family will no longer buy into the ideology of hate.”

Daryll, as I have said many times, referring to a candidate as a “President-Elect” eleven months (or more) BEFORE the election makes you look ignorant.

Lost in the pundits’ pondering over Mike Huckabee’s scam to show - and then not air - an attack ad against Mitt Romney is the former Arkansas Governor’s apparent bloodlust. As Steve Benen and Michael Crowley note, Huckabee’s spot takes Romney to task for a record in Massachusetts that included “no executions.” In extolling the joys of the death penalty, Huckabee is following in the proud tradition of George W. Bush.

I don’t consider radical Islam and radical Christianity to be on a collision course with each other. To me, they’re both on the same team. Or at least they share a common team captain in the neocon movement. The Christian Zionists dovetail perfectly with the pro-Israel lobby, which needs radical Islam (which they supported and promoted through the Saudis in order to win the Cold War) to provide a scary boogeyman in order to push through their agenda.

Which begs the question - who will they be colliding with?

The correct answer, for one who truly had faith in his conviction that Huckabee has already “been elected by God” is something like:

“I do not think that an explanation is necessary because it will not happen.”

But since you don’t really know God’s will and are just seeking to stir up political squabbles, you went for the “Hillary or Obama” line.

I think that Daryll is sincere, and the fact that he’s so impervious to reason and so invested in his prejudices says a lot about the “culture war” that Bill O’Reilly tries to foment and exploit. People like Daryll are easy to manipulate.

So how did you help these prostitutes, exactly? Did your mission group provide them with job training or education so they could learn a new trade? Did you provide them with information on AIDS and other STDs and how they can prevent the spread of these diseases? Did you find them alternate sources of income that will allow them to support themselves and their families when they leave the sex trade?

Or did you just give them a spoonful of Jesus and then pat yourselves on the back?

    Comment by Daryll — January 2, 2008 @ 11:27 am

Just a few questions for you, Daryll:

    1) Do you have some numbers for the homosexuals who were “converted” and the prostitutes who were “saved”? And how do you verify these conversions? And do you do any follow-up checking?

    2) When you say that Huckabee wants to clean up our nation and bring back harsh capital punishment, what do you mean by that? Are you saying that capital punishment should be harsher than it is? Are you suggesting that capital punishment of any degree of harshness does anything to deter crime? Studies show this is not the case. Otherwise, Texas (having the highest number of executions in the country) should have the lowest murder rate. They don’t.

    3) When you say “we are going to take back what the devil stole from us,” what exactly does that mean? What exactly did the devil steal?

    4) And finally, why do you think it’s necessary for Huckabee to be in office for “more evangelistic conferences and revivals to be added to national syndicated television”? In the first place, there is no government-run television network under the jurisdiction of the President. In the second, there’s nothing stopping you from lobbying for more religious programming now. Just put together a format that’s guaranteed to bring good ratings and any television broadcast outlet will beat a path to your door.

Oh, and I’d like to point out that the last Sunday School teacher who served as President (Jimmy Carter) managed to get elected without shameful exploitation of the God he worshipped.

    Comment by toasterhead — January 2, 2008 @ 11:43 am

That could well be, however, from what I see, and mind you this is only my understanding of events, they have “targeted” each other. They have a history of targeting each other, in other words, a continuation of the “crusade mentality”. This leads me to believe they are currently on a collision course, at the peril of the rest of humanity.

There are of course, other parts to this issue, for example the agenda of the “Christian Reconstructionist” to establish a “Christian Nation” here in the United States. However, I see all this “side show” as it were, part and parcel of the overall movement for complete domination by a religious group, be they Christian, Muslim or Jewish.

With all the religious fundamentalist, there is absolutely no room at their table for honest debate, discourse, intellectual research, or disagreement. They don’t commit evil for evils sake, they commit evil to make a better world.

The worst suffering in human history has been carried out by such people, who had these grand Utopian visions, seeking to bring about their narrow version of goodness or godliness.

Yes, we could say that they are on the same team, the team that wishes to bring about the end of the world, or gain enough favor to earn 72 virgins in the afterlife. At the end of the day, the rest of humanity needs to stand up to them and tell them to go kill themselves and leave us to build a planet based on the respect of our common humanity.

Until that happens, I fear we are all in grave danger.

  131. Citizen_of_Earth Says:

In case anyone did not see this last year, from an article by Chris Hedges, explaining the “Religious Right” and their recruiting tactics.

“The new ideology gives the believers a sense of purpose, feelings of superiority and a way to justify and sanctify their hatreds. For many, the rewards of cleaning up their lives, of repairing their damaged self-esteem, of joining an elite and blessed group are worth the cost of submission. They know how to define themselves. They do not have to make moral choice. It is made for them. They submerge their individual personas into the single persona of the Christian crowd. Their hope lies not in the real world, but in this new world of magic and miracles. For most, the conformity, the flight away from themselves, the dismissal of facts and logic, the destruction of personal autonomy, even with its latent totalitarianism, is a welcome and joyous relief. The flight into the arms of the religious right, into blind acceptance of a holy cause, compensates for the convert’s despair and lack of faith in himself or herself. And the more corrupted and soiled the converts feel, the more profound their despair, the more militant they become, shouting, organizing and agitating to create a pure and sanctified Christian nation, a purity they believe will offset their own feelings of shame and guilt. Many want to be deceived and directed. It makes life easier to bear.

Freedom from fear, especially the fear of death, is what is being sold. It is a lie, as everyone has to know on some level, even while they write and rewrite their testimonies to conform to the instructors’ demands. But admitting this in front of other believers is impossible. Such an admission would be interpreted as a lack of faith. And this too is part of the process, for it fosters a dread of being found out, a morbid guilt that we are not as good or as Christian as those around us. This dread does not go away with conversion or blind obedience or submission. This unachievable ideal forces the convert to repress and lose touch with the uncertainties, ambiguities and contradictions that make up human existence.”

    – I believe that whipping (cruel and unusual punishment) and executing people without due process (would you mind if they at least had a TRIAL?) are both unconstitutional. However, if Huckabee truly wants our country to resemble the type of harsh theocracy one finds in the Middle East, he can get the pesky constitution changed with an amendment or two. He only needs the support of both houses of Congress and 38 states.

“3. The devil stole morals and values, which were once instilled into our nation.”
    – So THAT’s where our morals and values went! This explains why our leaders lie to the people, start wars based on falsehoods, rob from the poor in order to fatten the rich, steal elections, gather intelligence on political enemies to blackmail them into submission, and consider our constitution to be just a “g*ddamn piece of paper.” Yes, I’d REALLY like to see decent morals and values return to our government — and now I know all I have to do is wrest them from the devil (who must be holding our leaders hostage as well).

“4. This nation needs to be saved.”
    – I agree (although this response has absolutely nothing to do with the question I asked, which was how much influence the President has over religious programming on television). It needs to be saved from the type of leadership we have now, which has driven our country into unprecedented debt, earned emnity from the rest of the world, tanked the value of the dollar, and overall set an appalling moral example for successors. It needs to be saved from intolerance, which only polarizes us and rips us apart. It needs to be saved from corporate greed, whose only objective is to rape and pillage as much as possible in the short term for financial gain, with no thought to the future. It needs to be saved from harm to our environment, so we can leave behind a world our children and grandchildren can live in. Yes — the nation does need to be saved. But probably not in the way you envision.

Forget Daryll. He is a troll. His kind need to be watched because they are terminally stupid and easily led sheep.

Note that Daryll condems gambling. However, it is that great Republican scion of ethics, William J. Bennett, who saw no problems with gambling as long as you were rich enough.

Note that Daryll wants to talk about the loose morals of our current generation of Americans. Why is it that Daryll does not want to talk about that political party which is known for its great number of adulterers, fornicators and pedophiles? You know, the Republican party. The same party that has turned government into a market with a big for sale sign.

Note that Daryll does not want to acknowledge that the states with the greatest problems of poverty, divorce, crime, underage pregnancies and out-of-wedlock births are all very Red, very religious Republican states.

Religion can provide sustenace to many. However, those like Daryll, want to blame all problems on the lack of religious devotion. There are far more likely suspects. There are those who corrupt religion into nothing more than a political campaign weapon. There are those who become so full of themselves and the superiority of THEIR religious beliefs that they forget the hummility and tolerance for which Christianity has and should stand. We have seen too many Evangelical leaders become enamoured with the rewards of selling their faith and their religion for political as well as personal gain.

Which Lord does Huck pray to?

    The One Lord who says:
“Love your brother as you would have him love you”
“The least you do to your brother, you do unto me”

Or the “other” lord that says:
    “Throw stones, sinner or not”
“Dine only with friends that have good taste.”

Your comment made me laugh out loud!
I agree with you: aside from Bush, few people speak in public wherein my response is something along the lines of “Jesus Christ!”

  146. MapleStreet Says:

Above comments cover well that Huck seems trying to incite a DOS attack to interfere with Federal Elections.

With the full baggage of the Shrub / Rove / Cheney crowd did he actually say that you dance with them who brung you ??????

A few days ago, he told a rally that if their neighbor was for someone else, make sure their neighbor couldn’t get out of the house on caucas night. Shovel snow in their driveway, etc.

Few days before that he showed the birds he shot with explanations such as “This one was going to caucus for …..” “That one had a Huck button so I let it go”, etc.

Considering the recent few years of dirty tricks, phone jamming (while blaming the dems for phone jamming), etc. Not only do these sound extremely mean spirited (WWJD???) but also like an attempt to incite folks to election fraud.

What is the next speech gonna be: If any of y’all are off your psychiatric medicine, I hope you take your shotgun to the _______ office and ……

The pious Baptist preacher who would be president really doesn’t believe in what used to be our system of government - he’s a Bushie all the way, dirty tricks and all.

I think there was a time, back in the Old Testament, when people were offered a government by the people, and they opted for a king - guess that’s another christianist value.
