ThinkFast: January 2, 2008

hamiltonkean4.jpg

Former 9/11 Commission Co-Chairman Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton write in The New York Times today that the CIA “obstructed our investigation” when it destroyed interrogation videotapes and “failed to respond to our lawful requests” about “the kind of information that would have been contained in such videotapes.”

According to the Washington Times, President Bush “is benefiting from a Karl Rove-free White House and the lower-profile approach of his successor,” Barry Jackson, who is now “the right fit for a president now reliant on Republican legislators sticking with him.”

After enjoying “a good rest” at his Crawford, TX ranch, President Bush returns to Washington with an “ambitious agenda for 2008,” which includes “tackling the mortgage lending crisis,” “securing more money from Congress for Iraq,” and pushing Congress to “permanently revise the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.”

In “the most brazen and deadly attack” that Baghdad has seen in months, 36 people were killed and 32 were wounded by a suicide bomber who “targeted a funeral procession for a victim of another bombing.” There has been “a slight rise in suicide car and vest bombs” in Iraq since October.

“An outspoken Saudi blogger is being held for ‘purposes of interrogation,’ the Saudi Interior Ministry confirmed Tuesday.” Fouah al-Farhan, whose blog “discusses social issues,” wrote in a letter to friends before he was arrested that he is being targeted because of his writings on “political prisoners here in Saudi Arabia.”

“Five years after passage of a federal law to create electronic registration databases to deter voter fraud, the new technology is posing hurdles that could disenfranchise thousands of legal voters,” according to USA Today.

“The Pakistani election commission, citing uncivil unrest following the assassination of political leader Benazir Bhutto last week, on Wednesday delayed upcoming parliamentary elections until Feb. 18.”

“Aid agencies today warned of a humanitarian disaster in Kenya as post election violence escalated amid claims of ‘ethnic cleansing‘ by rival tribes.” Estimates say up to 100,000 people have been displaced and more than 300 have been killed.

Oil prices fell two cents on Monday, yet still closed out 2007 “57 percent higher than where they began.”

And finally: The Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute wants you to follow the new year with its annual “pinup calendar of conservative women.” Gracing the pages are political commentator Bay Buchanan, blogger Michelle Malkin, and “author and calendar stalwart” Ann Coulter. Institute President Michelle Easton “fantasizes about a day when a conservative women’s magazine competes for supermarket shelf space with Glamour and Cosmopolitan.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

    Anyone surprised at all? Anyone?

Continuing Republican obstructionism will be the death of their party!

    Hi all,

I think that a Karl Rove-free White House is a myth. I can’t see why Karl, whose position in GOVERNMENT was always nil, would have less political and policy influence now. I think he’s just gone back to the shadows.

  5. Uncle Ho says:

Good morning, campers. And Happy new year.

So, Bush has an ambitious agenda for 2008. I imagine that includes a signing statement which abolishes the Constitution, Congress, and the Supreme Court, and makes himself dictator for life.

Does anyone have blueprints for building guillotines? We WILL be needing them.

  6. Jason M. Hendler says:

No polls showing 2008 general election matchups between Dems and Reps!

MSM always hide these polls when Hill’reh is down big against Rep potential candidates. I suspect, that after Benezir Bhutto’s death, only Edwards maintained his position, while Hill’reh and Obama took a nose dive.

MSM wants Hill’reh and Obama bad, but reality keeps intervening, forcing US priorities, which is why, even when Dems get elected, they still have to do what Reps would have done anyway.

No shit sherlock. And what are you going to do about it? Didn’t you know that King George and his minions are allowed to do anything they want to do. In other words, they are thumbing their noses in our faces and will continue to do so until such time as the Democrats grow a spine and start playing hardball.

  8. bilbobaggins says:

There has been “a slight rise in suicide car and vest bombs” in Iraq since October.

So, what are the Republiscums going to say if the violence goes back to the level it was before they started shouting “the surge is working, the surge is working”? Are they going to shout “the surge IS NOT working”? It will be interesting to see the spin they put on it.

  9. Democrat Soldier says:

Prediction: their “spin” will be that the surge is always working, no matter the truth. Anything that contradicts this spin will be ignored or blamed on anyone but themselves.

Fouah al-Farhan, whose blog “discusses social issues,” wrote in a letter to friends before he was arrested that he is being targeted because of his writings on “political prisoners here in Saudi Arabia.”

So now he is a political prisoner. These are the friends that Bush looks up to. What a shining example of democracy in action they are (not!).

  11. bilbobaggins says:

“Five years after passage of a federal law to create electronic registration databases to deter voter fraud, the new technology is posing hurdles that could disenfranchise thousands of legal voters,” according to USA Today.

Why does this not surprise me? Why was it that we didn’t have these kind of problems back in the day when good old people power ran our elections. Thom Hartmann frequently says something that I totally agree with. He says that a country that privatizes the the vote is a country that will not remain a democracy for very long. Why in the hell are we turning over one of our most precious rights to private for-profit industries?

Our Democracy should not be subject to ‘proprietary’ claims by corporations; there is nothing which should be less subject to private ownership than our vote.

I would take that one step further: It’s not “will be the death of their party”; it HAS BEEN the death of their party. The GOP is all but gone with it’s 28 percenters. In terms of registered voters, they rank third now.

Once the primaries are over, the candidates will turn to the ones who really matter to them most: The Independent/Unaffiliated voters. This is the only way the people can regain some modicum of power over this capricious government of ours.

Once the primaries are over, it will be time for people to unaffiliate and register as Independent so this bloc of voters can determine who will be our next POTUS – and not the mainstream sycophantic whoring corporate media!

P.S. Happy New Year to all!

Hypothetically, if Pakistan acted in the exact same manner as Afghanistan.

Hardly frigging war mongering considering that Pakistan’s two major factions (The Bhutto camp and the Musharraf camp) both wanted the Taliban and AQ out of there and the vast bulk of what he said was that the US should offer support to Pakistan in its efforts to get rid of the al Qaeada presence within its borders.

You see, that’s the difference between liberals/progressives and conservatives: we admit it when we make mistakes. Conservatives claim they never make mistakes and refuse to admit anything was their fault.

Now, clear away the smoke from your bong before you start attacking again. It helps when you can see your target, and not just blindly follow the dictates of your party’s attacking-points.

  39. toasterhead says:

Just making sure you are hip to the current state of Paki politics before you take another toke.

    Comment by Fairy Duster — January 2, 2008 @ 10:18 am

Speaking of being hip to international affairs, are you aware that “Paki” is an offensive term for most Pakistanis?

  40. barfly says:

“Au contraire, mon cheese, but he declared a willingness to use military force inside Pockeestaan with or without the approval of the Pak government.”

Pakistan is a haven for state-supported terrorists (not true with Iraq). Why wouldn’t he talk of invading an area that gives material support to terrorists? Wasn’t that the whole rationale behind invading Iraq? Obama’s willingness to use force only mirrors the current thinking, so take any complaints you have with Bush.

and where is the word “invasion” in that statement, fairy? Oh, it’s not there? what a surprise; you’ve conveniently lied again. i guess you wingnuts will never get comfortable with the truth.

  44. Bruce Gorton says:

    Fairy Duster

Yeah, are you saying you object to the war in Afghanistan?

  45. Lefty Patriot says:

Is “Pak” suitable, if for no other reason than to save myself the time of tapping out ‘Pakistan’ every time?

    Comment by Fairy Duster — January 2, 2008 @ 10:32 am

That’s acceptible. And to respond to your earlier moronity, launching a missile from a Predator drone is NOT a military invasion by any definition of the term.

  47. barfly says:

I would expect you to support military action against Iran since they “give material support to terrorists” and are a “haven for state-supported terrorists”.

Funny how these things work themselves out.

    Comment by Fairy Duster

Actually, you’re wrong. Iraq wasn’t a haven for terrorists before the war.

The Paki ISI, however is a different story.

And Obama was a state legislator when Bush decided to invade, so your “take it up with Obama” is wildly off the mark.

  48. Bruce Gorton says:

    Fairy Duster

And the correct term is Pakistani. Paki is used by English neo-Nazis to describe just about anyone of Asian descent.

  49. Bruce Gorton says:

    Fairy Duster — January 2, 2008 @ 10:34 am

Then why should you object to Obama saying he would act in a consistant manner with Afghanistan?

  50. Lefty Patriot says:

See my last post. I guess we can bury this stereotype too.

    Comment by Fairy Duster — January 2, 2008 @ 10:33 am

which stereotype? the one where wingnuts are ignorant racists, or the one where rightards don’t know anything about foreign policy? either way, you have a lot of digging to do to bury these stereotypes, which are, after all, your own creations.

  51. Lefty Patriot says:

And Obama was a state legislator when Bush decided to invade, so your “take it up with Obama” is wildly off the mark.

  52. Marie says:

Of course the peace demonstrations were booed by some of the onlookers – they certainly don’t want their fun and frivolity marred by something like an illegal war with all its death and suffering.
I give those who protested a lot of credit – they knew what they would encounter, but they went anyway and brought their message.

  53. Marie says:

What is all this crap about Obama wanting to invade? Someone has his facts all screwed up — better he should clear his head of all that fairy dust.

  54. barfly says:

Then again, is breaching the sovereign air space of a sovereign nation NOT an intrusion of their sovereignty? Just making sure so that if Bush were to launch a few hundred cruise missiles into Iran, you wouldn’t come back later and castigate him for it.

    Comment by Fairy Duster — January 2, 2008 @ 10:37 am

Silly reasoning, in light of Bush’s decision to allow Turkey to invade northern Iraq, thereby negating Iraq’s “sovereignty.”

  55. Bruce Gorton says:

You know, reading this post made me revise my opinion of you.

You aren’t actually rightwing. You are just another “Me-too.”

    What is a me too?

It is an atheist who turns atheist not because of the evidence, but because of the behaviours of the “religious.”

It is a religious person who turns religious not because they believe in God, but because they don’t like the behaviour of the “atheists.”

It is someone without any depth to their ideology, someone who proclaims that “I don’t like you therefore everything you say is wrong.” It is a profoundly stupid person and you get them in all walks of life.

Okay, you don’t like Cindy Sheehan, but do you disagree with her?

Sure, you like Bush, but do you actually agree with his decisions?

Start thinking with your brain, not your emotions.

  70. barfly says:

Hunter’s always bragged that he was the only member of the House with a family member “in a war zone,” so it’s fair game in my book.

  71. toasterhead says:

You have your daily brainmelt about the war but then spend all sorts of time explaining that sending drones into Pakistan really isn’t a big deal, as if you wouldn’t go apeshat if Bush Tomahawked a few Iranian terrorist camps.

    Comment by Fairy Duster — January 2, 2008 @ 11:00 am

No, there’s actually a huge difference between the two. Al-Qa’ida is known to exist, is known to be in the federally-administered tribal areas of Pakistan, and is a known threat both to Pakistan and to the United States. Attacking a specific al-Qa’ida target of opportunity, via special forces already embedded with the ISI or with an unmanned drone, would be a good strategic move (though I’d prefer an action that puts said al-Qa’ida leader in custody rather than one that kills him).

Iran is not a threat to the United States and these “terrorist training camps” you speak of are simply not credible. Attacking Iran would be an unprovoked act of aggression. Although they do provide financial support for Hamas and Hezbollah, these are not universally considered terrorist groups.

  72. Bruce Gorton says:

    toasterhead

Iran supplies 1/2 of China’s oil and has major alliances throughout the world – which it can use to cut American trade.

Pakistan is currently in an on again off again war with your major ally – India.

Pakistan, in the hypothetical situation would have actionable intellegence saying that they are hosting your enemies.

Iran, currently only has actionable intelligence saying it doesn’t have WMDs.

Pakistan currently has WMDs and a history of supplying the technology involved in making them to your enemies (North Korea.)

Iran, may get WMDs one day, maybe.

  73. barfly says:

Notice too how the candidates are focusing on things OTHER than the Iraq war?

    Comment by Fairy Duster —

I’ve noticed the media doesn’t use “conservative” much, anymore. They now use “prudent,” or some other adjective that means restrained.

I think the term conservative now has more negative connotations than liberal.

    Thank George.

  74. barfly says:

Sure, because we all know how much the left supports the idea of having veterans as opposed to non-vets in public office.

The left is now highly-composed of vets, so your statement is a non-sequitor.

Re: After enjoying “a good rest” at his Crawford, TX ranch, President Bush returns to Washington with an “ambitious agenda for 2008,” which includes “tackling the mortgage lending crisis,” “securing more money from Congress for Iraq,” and pushing Congress to “permanently revise the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.”

But…but…but…what about flag burning and same-sex marriage? Those were the two most important issues facing America in 2006. I’m sure we’ll see them again this summer.

  82. Fred says:

I just thought this was a progressive forum. I don’t like it when obvious republicans take over and dominate the conversation and say things like this:

Can’t Americans just have one day off without the hysterical left trying to remind us why they hate the United States?
    Fairy Duster

Which I can assure you he/she would not say to my face because these types are basically afraid and must strike from an anonymous position.

  83. barfly says:

“But trying to paint the lesser Hunter as unqualified because he didn’t serve in combat and his opponent did doesn’t serve the public trust.”

Neither does trying to paint yourself a “war vet” when you were rear echelon for a reason. If young Hunter doesn’t try to use his service as an election tool, I won’t say anything. But if he does, I plan to rub his nose in the fact that he was rear echelon.

So why shouldn’t a vet who’s seen the effects of Bush’s war firsthand be considered more credible than someone who purposely stayed out of the line of fire (the pentagon would never make the same mistake of allowing a sitting congressperson’s kin to serve in combat, for fear of capture, and the inevitable propaganda and negative press that would ensue) to get a dubious credibility for war time service? His father’s bragging to constituents about his son’s service can be considered just such a political primping.

  84. osage says:

AMERICANS ARE BEING BETRAYED BY OUR LEADERS AND THEIR COWARDLY ENABLERS FROM BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES

American political leaders must LOUDLY and REPEATEDLY DENOUNCE George W. Bush’s and Richard B. Cheney’s actions and orders as UNCONSTITUTIONAL, UNLAWFUL and TREASONOUS rather than VALIDATE them with POLITICAL POSTURING, TIMIDITY and SILENT ACQUIESCENCE!

IMPEACHMENT is the only means we have of stopping the cataclysmic consequences of the unrelenting IGNORANCE, ARROGANCE, INCOMPETENCE, DISHONESTIES, INSECURITIES, HOSTILE TEMPERAMENT, VINDICTIVENESS and PRONOUNCED MORAL AND ETHICAL DEFECTS of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney. They are intellectually and emotionally mean-spirited and malicious immature children who are jointly destroying America’s honor and integrity throughout the world. And politically correct Democrats and Republicans are standing by watching as they dismantle our Constitution and rules of law creating an all powerful and self-ruling/policing ONE branch oppressive/fascist American government. No individuals in our history are more deserving of public CONDEMNATION and legitimate PROSECUTION than George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney. God cannot save us from such men. That is something WE MUST DO FOR OURSELVES!

  85. Democrat Soldier says:

#89 – “The only complaint I have with Obama is his hypocrisy, the same goes for the rest of the libruuls who spend so much time bleating about the NeoCon Warmongers©.” Comment by Fairy Duster — January 2, 2008 @ 11:00 am

For someone who complains about others lumping all conservatives/neo-cons into buckets of “typical behavior” that you don’t agree typifies them, you sure like to lump liberals/progressives into buckets.

Why do YOUR “typical libural” ramblings deserve to be bleated, while anyone elses MUST be wrong?

  86. newpantaloons says:

Good God! This idiot “Fairy Duster” is too stupid to even comment on. To continue to write these inept and inane comments defending the Iraq War and all that goes with it are just so much wasted energy down the drain. This stupid fool is a paid troll or he’s “Michale” from the old Huffington. Ignore him, flag him, and they will get RID of him. He will have to come back under another name. That’s what they all do. To say that : “you don’t hear too much of the Iraq War anymore”, is just another idiotic right wing noise coming out of this fool’s mouth. In case he doesn’t understand, there were MORE American troops killed in Iraq in 2007 than the next worst “murdering” year, 2004. And, MORE Iraqi civilians killed in 2007. Let’s see now, January 2008, Bush announces “Surge”. MORE troops and civilians killed in 2008. Hummmm??

But, with ‘Fairy Duster, the bleat goes on.

  87. newpantaloons says:

Oops, Meant to say “January 2007, Bush announces “Surge”. MORE troops and ciivilians killed in 2007 than any OTHER year in this stupid war.

Flag him and they will get rid of him. Simple!

  88. Fred says:

That’s all I’m saying…..when they are identified….get rid of them.

  89. osage says:

What have Bush and Cheney done to improve the quality of life for the underprivileged and middle class American workers either falling further into poverty or struggling to pay their bills? What have they done to improve the quality of life for our troops serving and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, while their families fend for themselves and struggle to stay together? How many hundred of billions of dollars are going overseas and into the deep pockets of fat cat corporations, while so many of America’s citizens can’t afford to pay for health insurance, are defaulting on home loans and can’t afford the unbelieavly high cost of sending their children to college? Where do you neo-cons come down on the issue of the welfare of the majority of working class American citizens vs. the welfare of rich Americans who are trying to take more power and control away from working class Americans so they can get even RICHER?

  90. Zimzone says:

    Comment by Zimzone

That used to be easy but as has been noted many of them are on someone’s payroll to deliberaly disrupt progressive forums. I for one am tired of listening to it. If I wanted to hear it I would tune in to faux neus.

  92. Severus says:

#120 Osage, Impeachment is such an appealing idea except it will not happen and if it perchance did happen it would not work. The numbers simply are not there.

Bush could be caught on film on the White House lawn having sex with a baby while eating a new born puppy as a snack with one hand and accepting a cash payment from Bin Laden with the other hand and he would still not get impeached. Why? Because democrats only hold a slim lead in each house and I do not see more than one or two republicans who would break ranks to convict Bush of anything, even if their constituents were clamoring overwhelmingly for impeachment. They value the party and the power of their party over all else including the security of our country both in spirit (the constitution) and in actual physical security. It just ain’t gonna happen because they will not have the support of the full congress. And of course if impeachment was attempted, it would fail and then the republicans would tout the failed attempt as proof of no wrong doing giving them a political victory.

  93. Keith says:

President Bush said he was deeply saddened by the assassination in Pakistan, especially since he just recently learned how to spell and pronounce Benazir Bhutto’s name.–Tony Peyser

Anyone know what ever happened to big papa who used to post here?
