‘El Rushbo’ Endorses Himself For President: I Have ‘The Qualifications’ As Clinton’s ‘Real Co-President’

rushtowel.jpgYesterday, Rush Limbaugh returned to the airwaves after his holiday break. Rather than endorsing a candidate for president — something his followers have long speculated about — Limbaugh promoted himself for the top job, saying that his “experience” criticizing the Clinton administration through the 1990s made him the most qualified candidate:

I want to discuss with you my qualifications, the qualifications that I possess that suggest that it is I, El Rushbo, who can lead you through this difficult period. [...]

For eight years folks, from 1993 through the end of the year 2000, I was there, with Bill Clinton, every day. I advised Clinton on every key issue. I was working behind the scenes to run the country and add to his legacy. I’m not saying he listened to me, but I was there, as were you. [...]

The influence this program exerted on Bill Clinton, should I have chosen to run for president would qualify me more than his wife, ladies and gentlemen. But when those records are released you will see how much of a factor I was in the Clinton White House and how successful I was as the real co-president.

Listen to it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/01/RushPresident.320.40.flv]

Limbaugh’s self-important, self-endorsement is clearly tongue-in-cheek. Even so, Limbaugh’s history of outrageous statements and claims is anything but presidential:

- Limbaugh has called American service men and women who criticize the Iraq war “phony soldiers.”

- Limbaugh compared an Iraq war vet who criticized him for the comment to a suicide bomber because liberals were “strapping those lies to his belt.”

- Limbaugh said the abuse at Abu Ghraib was only guards simply “having a good time.”

- Limbaugh said the Middle East “should just have civil wars,” and added, “Fine, just blow the place up.”

Alas, if “El Rushbo” is not drafted to run for President, he can take solace in the fact that he once played one on TV.

I’ve been listening to Rush yesterday and today, since he’s been back from vacation.

He has emphasized that Huckabee is NOT a conservative, just an evangelical. He has emphasized that McCain is not a conservative, just a veteran.

I missed the beginnings of his shows yesterday and today, so I guess that I missed the self-nomination portion of his show. If you know Rush, as long-time listeners do, then you would understand that he is just showing the equivalence of Rush’s credentials for President with Hill’reh. They both advised the Bubba Clinton everyday of his presidency – that’s it – Hill’reh only has her Senate experience.

Rush as President now that would destroy this country. As Rush would make molesting kids legal and Fingers Foley would be back in his job. Dennis Hastert would be allowed to do what he does ….. and Larry Craig wouldn’t have to use men’s room for sex. Vitter could be Committee Chairman of hiring Prostitutes for Law Makers. Yes of course the GOP would say their all Religious Christian Family Values people while committing sin. Rev. Huck would fit right in this group. Mitt could legalize a man having as many wives as they want. All the professional woman would lose their jobs so they could stay home in the kitchen. As for the immigrants Prez Rush would allow the children to stay their parents have to leave. Welcome to the new US with Prez pervert Rush.

  56. missmolly says:

OK, it’s fairly obvious that Rush is making fun of Hillary and her claim that her experience as First Lady is relevant to her qualifications to be president. I’m sure that his regular listeners will just eat up his claims that because he also “advised” Bill Clinton, he is just as qualified.

There are a couple of flaws in Rush’s premise — but then again, there always are. Even though I’m not particularly a fan of Hillary, I’d like to untwist Rush’s pretzel logic if I can.

    1) As First Lady with an office in the West Wing, and often working on projects for the executive branch, no doubt Hillary was privy to information from time to time that wasn’t public. This gave her a clearer picture to formulate any “advice” she was asked for.

    2) Hillary is a rabid researcher, and is good at doing her homework. This can work to her detriment (as we saw with her first health care proposal), but it also means she doesn’t merely bloviate. Rush, on the other hand, works to put together enough inflammatory rhetoric to put on a show, and he has his staffers cull the news for any kind of item he can put his brand of spin on.

    3) Rush and Hillary may both claim to have advised Bill Clinton when he was president, but only Hillary can claim that Bill actually listened.

    4) Any advice Hillary gave the president probably contained something useful instead of just name-calling. She may have called him a few names, too (particularly after the Monica scandal), but I doubt that was her sole communication, as it is Rush’s.

Wake me when Rush comes up with something fresh.

If Rush actually thought he’d win, he would run.

    Comment by Dr. Matt — January 3, 2008 @ 3:16 pm

I don’t think that’s true. I think that Rush much prefers being a critic to being a performer. As president, he’d have to work a lot harder. And he’d have to put up with some criticism directed toward HIM — which he avoids now by rarely stepping out side his broadcast booth.

When was the last time you saw him on any kind of mixed discussion panel? Can you just imagine him trying to hold his own in a real debate?

  63. leftcoast says:

As long as TP is posting some comedy:
    http://www.theonion.com/content/news/giuliani_to_run_for_president_of_9

“My fellow citizens of 9/11, today I will make you a promise,” said Giuliani during his 18-minute announcement speech in front of a charred and torn American flag. “As president of 9/11, I will usher in a bold new 9/11 for all.”

“Letting 9/11 fall into the hands of the Democrats in 2008 would be nothing short of a national tragedy,” Giuliani said. “Ever since 9/11 was founded that fateful day on 9/11, 9/11 has stood for one thing: 9/11.”

“If elected, Giuliani would inherit the duties of current 9/11 President George W. Bush, including making grim facial expressions, seeing the world’s conflicts in terms of good and evil, and carrying a bullhorn at all state functions.”

  64. Michael Lafferty says:

    Nope, not sufficiently qualified.

But, he does have the necessary experience to fill such slots as National Drug Czar, because he clearly recognizes the greater danger of Schedule 1 narcotics and other prohibited substances than that posed by prescription medications… Or, maybe not.

How about making him the White House spokesperson? Who better positioned than to twist the truth on behalf of a President?

  65. hellinabucket says:

Why would Rush want to take a cut in pay and have to have the appearance of being accountable. He’s got such a cushy job making up claims (The real Co President, the f#%k is this. Like there’s a fake co president competing with Rush), rustling papers and making an ass of himself.

Can you imagine the secret service detail that would be sent to his “vacation” spots?

  66. mary says:

If Hillary does manage to get the nomination the best part about it would be watching this blowhard Rush’s head explode.

But I heard Kucinich speak once and he came across as authentic. I think he’d be really good for the country. But I doubt the powers that be would ever allow that.

  67. Xisithrus says:

When was the last time you saw him on any kind of mixed discussion panel? Can you just imagine him trying to hold his own in a real debate?

    Comment by missmolly — January 3, 2008 @ 3:26 pm

Thats why Lush ended up on radio, he couldn’t actually debate, he only knows how to create controversy by making immature remarks. And the reason hes not on TV is because his ugly mouth got him fired.

Rush Limbaug h resigned from ESPN last night after not being able to escape a swell of controversy caused bv comments he made this past Sunday.During “NFL Sunday Countdown” on ESPN, the Radio talk show host said he thought “Philadephia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed,” according to the Associated Press.

  68. Impolitics says:

    On a related note:

The local “Rush Radio” station fired their sole remaining local rightwing host because he only had three loyal listeners/callers. Rush is the only one left and most calls seem to consist of, “when are you going to drop that idiot Limbaugh”?

The backlash is in full swing! Let’s keep it up and make them irrelevant. With luck, and hard work, we can build a future where our kids ask, “What was a neocon and why were they so bad?”

  69. RUCerious says:

You are probably correct here as that of course is Rush’s deal. He doesn’t actually believe the nonsense he spews. It is written for him to be delivered for profit. It has nothing to do with beliefs, values or anything else. It is simple market capitalism. The fact that more than a few hayseeds have been duped by this schtick changes nothing.

  76. hellinabucket says:

Who’s been carrying the Hillary banner here? There may be some but this is a free country Manslather.

  80. missmolly says:

P.S. You do realize that if Limbaugh had actually said what TP claims he did, the troops themselves would have demanded his removal from Armed Forces Radio?

    Comment by Manslagt — January 3, 2008 @ 3:51 pm

Doubtful. The soldiers who listen to him are the ones who support all things right-wing, including the Iraq war. They know they aren’t the ones that Rush was calling “phony”, so they probably wouldn’t complain.

The others — the ones who don’t think their being over there is a good idea (the Pat Tillmans of the armed forces) would probably rather be set on fire than listen to Rush anyway, so whatever he says probably doesn’t make much difference to them.

  81. mary says:

I don’t understand why anyone would defend blowhard Rush. I

don’t think he could care less about anyone defending him and, in fact, I suspect that he holds no respect for his listeners judging by the lies and garbage he feeds them. It’s like feeding candy to a baby every day. They cry, “More, more!” and meanwhile they’re starving from malnutrition.

    Comment by The Man-Slag — January 3, 2008 @ 3:51 pm

This is a total flat-out lie from a Chimpy leghumping tweezerhead. Limpballs was clearly referring to the previous caller, who identified himself as a Republican and a veteran, when he used the phrase “phony soldiers”.

    Listen to it once again.

Limpballs had no reason to doubt the authenticity of this caller’s service, other than his stance on the Iraq War. Yet he derided him as one of the “phony soldiers”. If he had been referring to MacBeth, one would think that name would have come up in connection with the comment, instead of almost two minutes later.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 3, 2008 @ 4:01 pm

Which means that she has held elective office longer than Dubya had when he was running for president (Dubya had been governor for five years at this point in his presidential campaign — same length of time Hillary has been a Senator for seven).

By inauguration day next year, she will have held elective office for the same amount of time Rudy Giuliani did (eight years).

Other candidates who have held elective office for eight years or less — Fred Thompson (8), John Edwards (6), and Mitt Romney (4). Huckabee, McCain, and Obama all have more than 8 years in elective office.

Presidents who held elective office for eight years or less before being inaugurated president — George W. Bush (6), (Ronald Reagan (8), Jimmy Carter (4), John F. Kennedy (8), Dwight Eisenhower (0) — and quite a few more. Bill Clinton, George HW Bush, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, and Lyndon B. Johnson all had more than eight years of elective office experience by the time they were sworn in.

The point is that the amount of Hillary’s experience isn’t that unusual for a presidential candidate. And certainly not unprecedented.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 3, 2008 @ 4:06 pm

Suggesting that I am stupid just shows me that you have run out of meaningful debate. I’d like to point out a couple of things:

    1) In no way have I called any of the troops stupid. Choosing not to listen to Rush Limbaugh isn’t a sign of stupidity, even if you may think so. I never even suggested that the troops who DO listen to Rush are stupid. I merely said there are soldiers who listen to Rush and soldiers who don’t. Neither of these groups is likely to go on a wild tear blasting Rush, but for different reasons.

    2) When I took my ASVAB at the time I entered the Navy, I scored quite well — considerably better than average. While I’m not claiming to be the smartest person who ever enlisted, I very much doubt that 99% of my shipmates were “sharper” than I was.

Before you sling insults, you might take the time to find out a little bit about your target. This is why I don’t call people names or make negative suggestions about who or what they are personally. Not even you.

You’re absolutely right. When you are a governor or a mayor, you don’t have any federal level government experience, nor do you have any foreign policy experience unless you have worked to gain it.

Watching Huckabee make gaffe after gaffe on foreign policy questions in his campaign points out very vividly the need for these things.

Even our almost-entirely-recumbent press would demand answers to enough tough questions that Rush would scamper off in disgrace.

It doesn’t surprise me he hasn’t endorsed one of the Republic candidates, for the same reason Pat Robertson won’t reveal what God whispered in his ear: neither can sustain the illusion of omnipotence when the field is so unsettled. 168. gummitch says:

Actually, it took quite awhile. Bush’s approval rating was still 70+ % in early 2004. That was before the Democrats decided to be dividers in order to win the presidency and Congress in 2004.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 3, 2008 @ 7:12 pm

Right. Nothing that Bush did had any effect on how people viewed him. That’s typical of “conservatives” who never take any accountability at all. It’s always someone else’s fault when they screw up.

Massive incompetence on the part of the administration might just have played a teeny role in Bush’s failure.

  169. gummitch says:

A good part of the drop can be attributed to Iraq and the constant claim that Bush lied about Iraq. If the media were responsible and reported that Clinton and his national security team also said Iraq had WMD, was a threat to the U.S., and had ties to al Qaeda, I suspect that Bush’s approval rating would be at least 10 points higher today.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 3, 2008 @ 7:21 pm

More evidence that “conservatives” refuse to take any accountability. It’s all the fault of the press, it’s the fault of the liberals, it’s the fault of the Democrats, it’s Clinton’s fault!!! . . . it’s never the decisions made by the people running the show. No matter how you try to drag Clinton into this, the fact remains that the Bush administration has had seven years to demonstrate their incompetence and they’ve done a bang-up job. Stop blaming everyone else for it and man up.

  172. Bad Eye says:

Well, I see Rush has changed his tune.

Several weeks ago I forced myself to listen to several minutes of his radio show. Went something like this:

Rush said that a listener e-mailed him and said he should push for Hillary to be elected so that everyone could see how she would really run the country, and then Rush could say, “See, I told you so.”

Rush said he wasn’t going to do that, because in 1992 another Clinton was elected and was in for two terms, and “we all know how that turned out.” He didn’t elaborate.

  173. Impolitics says:

As I noted above, Bush’s approval rating was still in the 70s a year AFTER the invasion of Iraq. And, again, the media have failed to report on the Clinton administration’s views on Iraq. The fact is that the intelligence was consistent from Clinton to Bush.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 3, 2008 @ 8:37 pm

It took more than a year for the truth to start peeking through. And Clinton didn’t invade Iraq based on that intelligence. So, what’s your point?

  174. Bad Eye says:

The fact is that the intelligence was consistent from Clinton to Bush.

    Comment by Manslagt — January 3, 2008 @ 8:37 pm

    No, it wasn’t.

    Summary:

There you have it. Four to seven months before 9/11–and just 15 to 18 months before the drive to attack Iraq seriously revved up–the Secretary of State and the National Security Advisor trumpeted that Iraq had a decimated military, no “significant capabilities” regarding WMD, and was so feeble that it couldn’t even threaten the countries around it with conventional military power.

    Source.

  175. Gregor Samsa says:

    Comment by Bad Eye — January 3, 2008 @ 9:38 pm

Let’s not forget that Hans Blix, the head of the UNSCOM in Iraq, called the intelligence provided to him by the Bush administration “garbage”; the same intelligence that was supposed to prove the presence of WMD in Iraq.

But Pres Bush ignored what the inspectors were saying and decided to invade anyway.

The fact is that the intelligence was consistent from Clinton to Bush.

    Comment by The Man-slag — January 3, 2008 @ 8:37 pm

And you wonder why we think you’re dishonest.

  177. Bad Eye says:

Yes, Manslagt, I know what your next question likely is:

“Did Clinton lie about Iraq’s WMDs, etc.?”

Are you referencing Clinton based on what he was saying in 1998, five years prior to the Iraq invasion?

My first reaction is to offer a counter question: why would he need to lie? As president, he apparently didn’t see the need to invade Iraq to take care of the “problem.” He also didn’t have a VP with ties to a major government contractor in line to receive billions of dollars in no-bid contracts that a multi-year war would bring to the company.

Anyway, it appears that Powell and Rice, as linked to above, likely had updated intelligence with which they declared Saddam a non-threat.

But wait…there’s more! Let’s look at the NIE on Iraq as presented in 2002. As The Hill reports, most Senators didn’t bother to read much, if any, of the NIE when asked. Former Senator and current presidential contender Fred Thompson wouldn’t even respond to requests about whether or not he read the report.
    Source.

Isn’t that just grand. Most of them didn’t even read the full report yet they voted to submit this country to an endless war in who the hell knows how many countries.

So, roughly a year-and-a-half after Powell and Rice’s comments, the “intelligence” tells us that Saddam is after all a threat, and must be dealt with post-haste. Looking at the total picture, Clinton in the late 90’s says he is a threat, a few years later Powell and Rice say no, and a year or so after that, Saddam is once again a threat. Add in the fact that the WMD inspectors were asked by Bush to leave Iraq before their jobs were finished; the fact that former CIA agent Tyler Drumheller told Tenet to remove info from Powell’s speech to the UNSC relating to mobile weapons labs because “Curveball,” who provided the info, was not trustworthy (yet it remained in the speech); let’s also add the question regarding how much of the intelligence from Curveball was included in the 2002 NIE.

What it all boils down to is this: the evidence, or lack of, found in Iraq since the invasion pretty much proves what Powell and Rice were saying in early 2001.
