“Nielsen says an average of 6,300 people a day watched FBN in the first two months of its launch last fall — a little more than 2% of CNBC’s audience of 283,000.” (via HuffPost)
I would be interested in knowing how certain programs performed in their respective timeslot, like Happy Hour. I wouldn’t be surprised if you simply took Happy Hour’s numbers and spread them out over 24 hours to get your result. I suspect Happy Hour, when scaled for number of households where it is available, trounces anything on CNBC.
You would truly have to be the stupidest businessman in the world to make personal or business financial decisions based upon information one would get from FOX. You would never get an honest assessment of the overall business landscape if it reflects poorly on Republican politicians.
Further, CNBC’s numbers got an unexpected boost as FBN opened, so again I suspect libs turned on their TV’s and left the room to make it seem as if CNBC is more popular.
I would like to see FBN compared to CNBC in the markets where they both exist using CNBC’s typical numbers prior to liberals inflating the numbers with fake viewership.
Yet to see FBN on any tv screen on a Wall Street trading floor, still all CNBC and Bloomberg. And whilst cnbc has it’s share of infotainment and noisy talking heads, most of them are at least people with business credentials. FBN invites dorks like Malkin.
I don’t know if it’s that partisan gunslinging is especially unsuited to business channels, or people are slow to change their habits, or that FBN is utter shyte. Or maybe the cross-promotion from the WSJ will take time to have an effect. But no-one who ought to watch the channel is very interested in it.
I guess people interested in business while eating mayonnaise sammiches, living in trailer parks, dating their sisters isnt as big of a demographic as FOX thought huh?
One of these days, the manipulated/brainwashed masses will wake from their koolaide induced stupor oozing from their sparkle-boxes, then Fox Network and News Corp will flush down as well.
Fox can’t be targeting the serious investor. Fox business news has always been the same pap as the rest of their reporting. Example: idiot Neal Cavuto predicting that the Dow will rise if we bomb Iran.
Ratings don’t matter to Rupert Murdoch. Somehow, somewhere he finds the money to prop up all of the money losing enterprises he starts up or over pays for.
If I were in government, I think I would take a really good look at Newscorp’s books, because there’s a really rotten smell eminating from Murdoch’s financial transactions.
Nasdaq down almost 3% this morning. Sadly, we’re looking at a CRASH scenario playing our sometime within the next 3-6 months IMO. This is very serious. Combined with rising, unemployment, inflation, stagnant wages and $100+ oil this is going to get very very ugly.

An infant, still in a stroller – with a big brass band, fireworks, and a non-stop narrator, announcing the arrival of The Golden Child from a mobile sound truck. They played this one up big to their viewers, who apparently didn’t much care for the kid.
You must remember, in 1996 CNN was still actually reporting real news, and not trying to be Faux-lite.
Today’s CNN is really not much better than Faux.
They keep replacing shows that used to report news with the bigoted, raging idiocy of reich-wing “shock jock” freaks like Glen Beck.
And Lou Dobbs needs therapy, seriously……
Or recruited to patrol the border. But for heavens sake, don’t give him a gun.
I was at Fox in Century City for a meeting last week. My guess is that half of the 6,300 daily viewers were actually Fox employees whose desktop teevees were tuned in to FBN. Seriously. Every single desk had a monitor and each one was tuned to FBN.
This is very serious. Combined with rising, unemployment, inflation, stagnant wages and $100+ oil this is going to get very very ugly.

The holiday sales has sunk some businesses already.
People did not really spend alot for christmas this year.
Drinking gasoline has “getting very pricey”.
I suspect the problem may not all be Fox. There is such a glut of cable channels now that any new one attempting to take share away from existing media (with loyal viewers) faces an uphill battle.
It’s like a new cola drink attempting to grab market share from loyal Coke and Pepsi drinkers.
I haven’t actually seen FBN yet, so I can’t comment on anything that could be improved. I will say that if FBN has followed the typical Fox formula of maintaining an audience with shiny objects, they should know that approach probably doesn’t work with the business crowd. When people’s money is on the line, they usually prefer steak to sizzle.
I wonder if Time Warner cable is trying to help them out. In the Cleveland market, C-Span and C-Span 2 were on channels 39 and 40 in the basic cable package, in December they moved C-Span 2 to the digital tier right next to FBC. Why split them up?
They should have gone with their Faux News model and hired a host who’s a whiny, big-mouthed idiot who uses a dildo and makes obscene phone calls. Freeptards would have flocked to their business channel.
You picked the wrong year, jdc. CNN started in 1980 and has been around for 27 + years.
Comment by good_golly — January 4, 2008 @ 11:53 am
uh…good golly? jdc was referring to the year FOX NEWS started.
In other words, the progress for Fox News was slow in coming at first, and in its infancy, CNN was probably predicting its demise, mush like many are now predicting the demise of Fox Business News.
In other words…jdc is agreeing with you.
Typical neocon thinking, you need to be told by someone else who your allies actually are. BAM!
FWIW, I’ll agree that it might be too soon to know how Fox Business will do, considering that it’s not on in huge chunks of the nation. Plus, as it probably derives a lot of its staff & resources as Fox News, the overhead is probably low, and Rupert has the dough-re-mi to keep it on the air no matter what until people finally do watch it, essentially willing it to be a success.
But I doubt it.
The thing with Fox News is, it’s not the NEWS people are tuning in to see. it’s the opinions of O’Reilly, Hannity, Gibson…you know, all those a-holes.
Hell, FNC hardly has any business news on it’s business news program, usually using that hour to bash Dems, kiss Bush’s ass and maybe in the last 2 minutes talk about how everything they just talked about is good for the market, an afterthought, really. That element of FNC’s schedule is essentially a circle-jerk to make rich people feel good about being rich and getting richer. Otherwise, there’s nothing there to prop up a whole nother network.
The people who tune into Fox News go there to hear what they WANT to hear. but when it comes to Business News, they’re going to go to hear what they NEED to hear, like the Evangelicals who tune into FNC to hear about how awesome Iraq is going, how many people we’ve killed, how much stuff we done blowed up good…and then go to church on Sunday, to learn about how to be a good Christian. Stuff they WANT to hear. Stuff they NEED to hear.
But business nuts aren’t trying to enrich their soul, just their wallets. So they’re gonna go where the business news actually is.
Fox News’ argument? They were afraid that their viewers would be confused by the news ticker at the bottom of the show, with such headlines as:
“…Do Democrats cause cancer? Find out at Foxnews.com.”
” … Rupert Murdoch: Terrific Dancer.”
“…Dow down 5000 points. ”
” …Study: 92 percent of Democrats are gay. ”
“…JFK posthumously joins Republican Party”.
“…Oil slicks found to keep seals young, supple.”
” … Dan Quayle: Awesome.”
Yes, Fox News viewers might not realize that they were watching “The Simpsons”, and may believe that 1) Fox News is now on the 7:00pm CDT Sunday time slot at the Fox Network;
and 2) Fox News replaced all of their real anchors with cartoon characters.
A really high opinion of their dedicated viewers, don’t you think?
Not surprising. The FOX approach to news is entertaining, but not something you’d put money on.
