During a discussion today on the results of last night’s Iowa caucuses, Fox News’s Neil Cavuto ran a chyron asking: “Did populism win and America lose in Iowa?”

UPDATE: Newshounds notes that Neil Cavuto ignored the fact that today was a terrible day on Wall Street.

the answer to that question, if you’re part of the monied elite, is ABSOLUTELY… the bush/clinton dynasty took a serious blow, as robert parry has astutely pointed out, the seriously anti-establishment john edwards made a strong showing, and the equally anti-repub establishment huck, is now going to face the ugly wrath of the same monied elite that has exploited all of huck’s folks for years… so, i guess it depends on what you mean by “america…”
January 4th, 2008 at 5:35 pmAnd, yes, I DO take it personally
Fox News is America’s loss.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:35 pmIs Cavuto the biggest clown on a network of clowns? It’s between him and O’Reilly.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:36 pmIt’s a well known chyron that Fox hates American Populism. And America.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:38 pmFox ‘News’ is going down!
January 4th, 2008 at 5:38 pmthat chyron speaks for itself. Ony thing I feel compelled to add is, “Wow.”
January 4th, 2008 at 5:40 pmGod forbid the people make a decision!! LOL Fox is really showing their true colors. I guess they aren’t even bothering with the “fair and balanced” idea anymore.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:41 pmIf you have to ask…
Corporations = America
You can tell, for instance, when they speak of “American Interests” in regards to foreign policy, 99 times out of 100 they are actually talking about Corporate interests.
And when an act is made to “defend the interests of the common people against an entrenched, self-serving or corrupt elite” it couldn’t be any more Un-American, in this context.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:42 pmThe Obama fascination facade will break and populism will win as more Americans see Edwards as the ‘real deal’ who can deliver more than flowery speeches, hope and vacuous promises.
PS - Fox News is fiction !
January 4th, 2008 at 5:44 pmWhen Rove created a party based on religious fervor, then the base shouldn’t be surprised if it nominates an Elmer Gantry.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:44 pmThe Iowa winner doesn’t necessarily win the nomination.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:45 pmWhat’s the matter, Fox…you don’t like Huckleberry?
A quick tour of rightwing tV and radio this AM found them furiously spinning corporate Mrs. Clinton’s thrd place finish… The TV station, I believe it was Fox, with a female AM talking head claimed that Hillary “only technically” finished third… And right wing radio talkers were desperate to prop up the collapsing Mrs. Clinton machine. Gotta keep corporate greed alive…
The one-two progressive tag-team of Obama and Edwards are going to wipe out Mrs. Hill in the next few weeks…
Cheers…
January 4th, 2008 at 5:46 pmDefine ‘America’. FoxNews defines America as you might expect; corporatism.
Hence when populism wins America does lose - they’re right.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:46 pmanother case of “if this wasnt so dangerous, it’d be a laugh riot”
January 4th, 2008 at 5:47 pmPopulism? Eeeeek! God forbid we have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. How un-American is that?!?
January 4th, 2008 at 5:48 pmIs Cavuto the biggest clown on a network of clowns? It’s between him and O’Reilly.
Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper — January 4, 2008 @ 5:36 pm
Oh, come on, Colonel — I’ll give you Cavuto, but both Hannity and John Gibson have bigger clown noses than Bildo. Bildo is much more of a putz than a clown, in my book.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:52 pmIsn’t that kind of an oxymoron?
Isn’t populism synonymous with America?
The people speak when caucusing in Iowa - albeit a somewhat arcane system - how is that indicative of a loss for America?
Cavuto means, the Fox propaganda machine is being exposed and is losing its power with the public.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:53 pm#7 Comment by Krazny — January 4, 2008 @ 5:41 pm
I guess they aren’t even bothering with the “fair and balanced†idea anymore.
Good catch! I do believe that the Rethugs are getting more desperate as November draws closer. And that smell of desperation is becoming more apparent to everyone. All the euphemisms of the last 7 years are falling away to reveal the rot and corruption that lies beneath the surface.
Sort of like they are abandoning everything as they try to escape the tidal wave in November that threatens to engulf them.

January 4th, 2008 at 5:53 pmPop·u·lism [pop-yuh-liz-uhm] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. the political philosophy of the People’s party.
2. (lowercase) any of various, often antiestablishment or anti-intellectual political movements or philosophies that offer unorthodox solutions or policies and appeal to the common person rather than according with traditional party or partisan ideologies.
3. (lowercase) grass-roots democracy; working-class activism; egalitarianism.
4. (lowercase) representation or extolling of the common person, the working class, the underdog, etc.: populism in the arts.
Hey Fox, maybe you could explain how this is America’s loss…
January 4th, 2008 at 5:56 pmI watched Rollerball the other night. “Now please stand for our corporate anthem.” In some ways a much better movie than I was expecting, but definitely a bit dated. Not sure how that applies exactly, but it does feel like how it’s going.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:57 pmCavuto only speaks for the wealthiest Americans, the elite so he is being honest of his feelings.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:58 pmIf Fox is against something, I’m for it, because it MUST be GOOD for America.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:58 pmThis is fantastic! The Freepers are terrified. And they should be.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:58 pmkm4: “The Obama fascination facade will break and populism will win as more Americans see Edwards as the ‘real deal’ who can deliver more than flowery speeches, hope and vacuous promises.”
I could be wrong, but I see Obama becoming more populist as the weeks go on. His rhetoric has been getting more “Edwardsy”. I think Edwards has been pulling him to the left.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:58 pmLost in the media focus on the victories of the supposed “change” candidates in Iowa last night are the dramatic differences in the priorities of each party’s voters. As Iowa Democrats headed to their caucuses in record numbers last night, the sputtering American economy topped their list of concerns. But in a disturbing hint of things to come from the GOP, Iowa Republicans instead were looking for someone to blame in making immigration their most important issue.
For the details on the parties’ different priorities, see:
January 4th, 2008 at 5:59 pm“Iowa Aftermath: Immigration the New GOP Wedge Issue in ‘08.”
Read some of Robert A Heinlein’s works from a loooong time ago, if you want an early glimpse of how corporate rule will supplant nations in the future.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:00 pmWhy does Fox Noise hate America (and Americans)..?
January 4th, 2008 at 6:00 pmFox News: populism’s win is America’s loss
No FAUX… it will be your demise along with the end of corporate power.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:00 pmFletchher: “I watched Rollerball the other night. “Now please stand for our corporate anthem.—
They really don’t make movies like that anymore. Rollerball was not really about a violent game. It was about a future shaped by unregulated corporate capitalism; a little dated, but an awsome film.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:01 pmNevar, I would also suggest “The Diamond Age” by Neal Stephenson. In that future, they’re not even called board members anymore - they’re called “equity lords.”
January 4th, 2008 at 6:03 pm13. Ur-Fascism is based upon a selective populism, a qualitative populism, one might say.
In a democracy, the citizens have individual rights, but one follows the decisions of the majority. For Ur-Fascism, individuals as individuals have no rights. The People are conceived as a quality, a monolithic entity expressing the Common Will.
Since no large quantity of human beings can EVER have a common will, the Leader pretends to be their interpreter. Having lost their power of delegation, citizens do not act; they are only called on to play the role of the People. Thus the People are only a theatrical fiction.
Because of its qualitative populism, Ur-Fascism must be against “rotten” parliamentary governments. Wherever a politician casts doubt on the legitimacy of a parliament because it no longer represents the Voice of the People, we can smell Ur-Fascism.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:04 pmFourteen Warning Signs of a Fascist State
-by Umberto Eco
The Fascist Corporatists got a good kick in the balls. One can only hope the American voters keep the steeled toed boots on and does it again in the coming weeks at the state primary votes.
Cavuto is a pouting little brainless fascist sissy - who despises DEMOCRACY AND THE RIGHT TO A FAIR VOTE, AS DO THE NAZIS AT FUX NEWS.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:05 pmNo, America WON and right-wing nutjob TRAITORS like Bush, Cheney and Fox “news” lost.
God Bless America and JAIL the TRAITORS for the rest of their lives..
Sincerely,
NRA Gun Nutes
January 4th, 2008 at 6:05 pmThe American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language defines populism as:
“A political philosophy supporting the rights and power of the people in their struggle against the privileged elite.”
Did populism win in Iowa or did the future of America win?
Will we be able to bequeath to our children and grandchildren a country where they will be able to give full play to their abilities and talents and secure a better world for their children and grandchildren?
Or will the oligarchy, the 1 percent continue to rule over the 99 percent?
What is at stake is not only the future of our country, the future of our species and planet is more at stake.
It is time to become active, it is time to research and learn for oneself, it is time to shake off our peaceful slumber and wake up to the reality of our life and our future.
If by being a populist I can help affect a change in the future of not only this country but the world, then I will gladly become a populist.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:07 pmYa think?
Anything that doesn’t involve war, excessive profits and killing Muslims is a waste of time according to the maroons at Fux Noise, and according to them, *they* are the only real Americans.
What a load of codswallop.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:07 pmHow could they possibly suggest that populism is the direct opposite of America? How is populism antithetical to what America is all about? That’s nuts.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:07 pmCavuto’s head caves in whenever he takes a fump.
-GSD
January 4th, 2008 at 6:08 pm#9 — can you please explain how working for a hedge fund (it does not get more monied elite than that), not to mention chowing down at the trial lawyers money trough, makes Edwards the “real deal” and Obama a false prophet as far as populism and power to the people go? Many thanks, I’ll take my answer off the air.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:09 pmobviously the guy who writes fox’s chyrons was doped up on goof balls.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:09 pmOne can hope,..
January 4th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
From Frank rich’s Dec. 2 column: After Iowa, even more pertinent…
But much like the Clinton campaign itself, the Republicans have fallen into a trap by continuing to cling to the Hillary-is-inevitable trope. They have not allowed themselves to think the unthinkable — that they might need a Plan B to go up against a candidate who is not she. It’s far from clear that they would remotely know how to construct a Plan B to counter Mr. Obama.

Read also Neuromancer by William Gibson. Diamond Age is a brilliant book, but Stephenson’s Snow Crash
January 4th, 2008 at 6:10 pmMeant to suggest reading Stephenson’s Snow Crash as well. I think my sentence ended up disjointed and sounding weird.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:11 pmDennis Kucinich and Ron Paul on TV TONIGHT!
Cleveland Democratic congressman/presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich will be a guest tonight on the PBS show “Bill Moyers Journal,†along with Texas GOP congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul.
The topic will be one of Kucinich’s favorites: “the media’s power to benefit some candidates and disadvantage others.â€
The show is on at 9pm eastern, 8pm central.

One can only hope,..
Click link.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:15 pmWhy doesn’t Fox just drop the pretense and start using the swastika as their emblem?
They’re going to need to find a way to retain their base after the election and “fair and balanced” is not what the trogs want.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:17 pmMrs. Bill Clinton now claims that she is a candidate for “change.” She and her corporate backers, the insurance companies, the pharmaceutical corporations and the HMOs want to help themselves to your loose change and your not-so-loose change…
Cheers.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:24 pmAll you need to know is: Look in the lower left hand corner, if there is a Faux NoNooz logo, the rest of the screen is of no value and contains more BS than a rodeo arena.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:39 pmWell, yeah, of course populism is a loss to the Founding Fathers’ Plutocracy.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:46 pmThe word “porcine” was invented to describe Neil Cavuto.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:53 pmKrazny, Neal Stephenson is my favorite of the newer SF authors. Both Snow Crash and The Diamond Age are just fantastic. And, of course, Gibson is incredible. Glad to see another fan of Stephenson.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:12 pmCol. Jack,
If you like both of those authors, I would suggest reading Ian M. Banks, both his fiction, and his science fiction, along with anything by Peter F. Hamilton.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:18 pmUh, I still get a chill up my spine thinking we are still whistling down the path to theocracy.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:27 pmFox News is America’s loss.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:37 pmWhat do you expect from a moronic, facist, scumbag employee of Fu(ks nOoze?
If Hitler had a cable news outlet it would be Fu(ks nOoze!!!
January 4th, 2008 at 7:42 pmHey Fox, maybe you could explain how this is America’s loss…

i think any of those definitions clearly explains what Fox is on about.
People=Society
Politics+Society=Communism
thats how they see it.
January 4th, 2008 at 8:01 pmAs I remember the last election, Kerry was the rich (Heinz fortune) Mass. liberal while GWB was the “regular guy” who everybody would like to have a beer with (that is the populist candidate).
Hate to say it, Fox is right that the populist candidate will ruin america.
January 4th, 2008 at 8:20 pmIf you have to ask…

Welcome to Facism 2.0
January 4th, 2008 at 8:30 pmEven if you do follow their psycho-corp “logic” - ow did America lose? It was a Caucus in ONE state!! And the first, man…..did they also move the terror level up a notch too while they were running that across the bottom of the screen?!
January 4th, 2008 at 8:47 pmFear is their weapon….it’s not working anymore.
Hows about a face off between libertarians and progressive this Nov. ! Populism is going to eat the establishment and the corporate government has been served notice .
January 4th, 2008 at 8:58 pmON BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE !
January 4th, 2008 at 8:58 pmThe Democrats are populists. Nothing draws a crowd like freebies!
January 4th, 2008 at 8:58 pmDems turned out at a, nearly, 2-1 ratio. There ain’t enough lipstick on earth to make the Republican pig “kissable”. The GOP is toast.
January 4th, 2008 at 9:15 pmThe voter caging will not work at that scale at least. Even Karl knows that. It only works when the difference is small…like, say - in 2004, in OH.
January 4th, 2008 at 9:18 pmIf we could only keep the active dynamicism of an election race happening all the time with our “Representatives.”
January 4th, 2008 at 9:55 pmHmm I wonder if there is such a way to be able to constantly keep your reporesentative in check to make sure they have/do not sell out to other interests.
Hmmm, I wonder…. http://www.thisinstead.info
Fox, the un-news — unfair and unbalanced.
January 4th, 2008 at 10:47 pmI swear Neil looks like that kid from the Munsters, all grown up now.
January 4th, 2008 at 11:10 pmThat is incredible. Fox said that populism is America’s loss. I am at a loss…for words. They don’t even pretend to be non-corporatists anymore.
January 5th, 2008 at 12:59 amMy question is this: How did “populism” “win”?
January 5th, 2008 at 1:50 amHuckabee (not a REAL populist) won the RepubliCON vote; Obama (another not a REAL populist) won the Democratic vote.
Huckabee is too thoroughly entrenched in the Religious Right to be a REAL populist, and Obama lost ANY claim to being a populist when HE got involved with that antigay bigot Donnie McClurkin.
I’m just waiting for the moment Cavuto breaks out the sock puppets…oh wait, that’s what he calls his “guests”. My bad.
Maybe Roger Ailes should take Laurie Dhue and the other mini-skirt models and just do another Naked News Channel. At least, he wouldn’t have to cover-up or hide his agenda for smut. Hell, at least people would watch that *cough* Fox Out-of-Business Channel.
January 5th, 2008 at 2:55 amI agree, Joseph, the only populist seems to be Edwards. Obama is just another centrist DLC suck up to me.
January 5th, 2008 at 3:09 amCavuto says populism’s win is America’s loss. Spoken like a true elitist.
As a noted political comedian recently said….when 5 star hotels aren’t good enough for America’s rich perhaps it’s time to bring back the guillotine.
January 5th, 2008 at 1:03 pmWhat’s really amazing is how a simple question can generate this much interest….
….oh yeah, this news item was just another reason to bash Fox News…which is still the largest purveyor of cable news in the United States.
Comment by O. Bigfoot — January 5, 2008 @ 1:36 pm
Gee, WHY would Fox (PROPAGANDA) “news” FRAME the question as if populism WAS bad for America?
Why not ask: Did George Bush LIE about WMD and get 4000 US soldiers and 1,000,000 Iraqis KILLED for his LIES?
Funny how the “largest purveyor of cable news” SUED FOR THE RIGHT TO LIE in court.
And WON.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

January 5th, 2008 at 1:58 pmWhen the people find their voice and fight, corporo-fascist mouthpieces like Fox lose, No matter how they attempt to present themselves.
January 5th, 2008 at 2:02 pmAnd Fox (PROPAGANDA) “news” is hardly “growing”.
The dead-enders that supported TRAITORS like Bush and Cheney are their ONLY audience.
The REST of America and the WORLD know it is PROPAGANDA.
Sincerely,
NRA Gun Nutes
January 5th, 2008 at 2:04 pmI never cease to be amazed at the immorality of the thugs who work at Fox News. They are as arrogant and sadistic as any Nazi Storm Trooper.
Hopefuuly, Fox News will lose its broadcasting license after next year’s election. The owners and employees of Fox should be tried for hate-mongering.
January 6th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
